A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & BOARD CHAIR

2 | 2016-2017 Urban League of Rochester Annual Report
Education means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the
uplifting of the soul of man into the glorious light of truth, the light by
which men can only be made free.
– Frederick Douglass, 1894
This year, the City of Rochester and numerous cities across the nation
celebrated the 200th birthday of Fredrick Douglass. Douglass was one
of the most influential African American leaders of the 19th century,
known for his work as a fearless abolitionist, author, and orator.
Douglass escaped slavery in 1846 and moved to Rochester, New York
where he lived for 30 years.
Growing up as a slave, Douglass realized that the ability to read was the
key to freedom. Obtaining one’s education remains essential to a
successful and fulfilling life. The Urban League of Rochester’s (ULR)
youth education and development programs help young adults realize
their dreams and plan for their futures through college and career
readiness activities including college trips, business tours, mentoring
services, financial aid workshops, and service learning projects.
This year, our Afterschool Academy provided programming to over 100
students. The Academy gives students a safe place to go where they
can have a hot meal, participate in hands-on activities, receive
homework help, and take trips to local businesses, colleges, and
museums.
Eighty-nine students in ULR’s GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate Program) visited at least one college
campus during the past year. Last April, 23 GEAR UP students
participated in a college readiness trip where they visited six different
universities, including Howard University and Morgan State University.
Finally, our Salute to Black Scholars Program continues to be a staple
program in the Rochester community, honoring 531 new Black
Scholars last June.
ULR not only helps students prepare to achieve post-secondary
success, we also strongly advocate for education systems that are
accountable and equitable. ULR is a member of the New York Equity
Coalition that works with local parents, districts, and policymakers to
create accountability standards that work for all students. William Clark,
President & CEO, also represented ULR on the New York State
commissioned Principal Project Advisory Team to improve the
development of school building leadership.
While it has been over 140 years since Fredrick Douglass lived in
Rochester, his legacy lives on today through organizations like the
Urban League as we remain fervently committed to helping African
Americans, minorities, and others in disadvantaged groups obtain self-
sufficiency.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our efforts to empower the lives
of those in the Rochester community. We look forward to this next year
as we continue to live, learn, and work together.
William G. Clark Glen A. Jeter
President & CEO Chair, Board of Directors
OUR MISSION
The mission of the Urban League of Rochester is to enable African-
Americans, Latinos, the poor and others in disadvantaged groups to
secure economic self-reliance, parity and power and civil rights.
Our three-pronged strategy for pursuing the mission is:
•Ensuring that our children are well educated and equipped for
economic self-reliance in the 21st century;
•Helping adults attain economic self-sufficiency through good jobs,
home ownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation; and
•Ensuring our civil rights by eradicating all barriers to equal
participation in the economic and social mainstream of America.

When Cedric was six years old, he was suffering from severe
seizures. Thankfully, his mother connected with the Urban
League’s Family Care Program, a program that helps
individuals with a qualifying disability live in a family setting
while developing the skills needed to live independently.
For the past fifteen years, Cedric has lived with his Family
Care Provider, Darlene, and her husband, Michael. Cedric
participates in family trips, including a recent trip to Italy.
Darlene and Michael also have a strong, trusting relationship
with Cedric’s mother and brother, who frequently visit. They
have become one big family!
The growth in Cedric is evident. He is now 21 years old, has
graduated high school, and is looking forward to a life of
independence. He no longer suffers from seizures or needs
medication. He currently participates in a work program and
is working towards his goal of living independently. The
program is funded by the New York State Office for People
with Developmental Disabilities. Cedric
The Urban League helps those with developmental disabilities live to their full potential.

While there are many staff, participants, and community
members bustling in and out of the office each day, the Urban

WE LEARN TOGETHER
When Gianna enrolled in Project Ready, she was a high school senior who did not have
any post-secondary plans. She dreamt of attending college, but had not submitted any
applications. While Gianna was not sure where she was headed after high school,
Project Ready staff knew she had the potential to succeed. During the final months
before graduation, Gianna and her Project Ready counselor worked diligently to fill out
college applications to put her on a path towards her career goals.
Gianna finished her senior year with a 4.0 grade point average and was recognized as
an Urban League of Rochester Black Scholar in June 2017. Gianna now attends Monroe
Community College for business administration and hospitality management. She wants
to become an event planner after college.
Jovan participated in Project Ready throughout his four years of high school. A young
man full of energy and ambition, Jovan took advantage of every learning opportunity he
could. He was a diligent student, regularly participated in community service events,
and attended Project Ready all while maintaining a part-time job at Wegmans. Project
Ready helped Jovan juggle his activities by teaching him time management and
communication skills.
During his senior year, Jovan maintained a 4.0 GPA and was recognized as an Urban
League of Rochester Black Scholar in June 2017. He now attends the Rochester
Institute of Technology where he is pursuing a degree in hospitality.

The Urban League gives students the tools to learnand achieve post-secondary success.
The Urban League's Summer of Opportunity Program Think,
Write, Speak: ROC City Future Reporters served 20 students
ages 14 to 15. Over the six week program, participants learned
about the tenets of journalism and the world of work. The
program collaborated with the Rochester Association of Black
Journalists and other organizations to provide workshops that
connected participants with local media professionals.
Participating in the program was an eye-opening experience for
the participants, who got to see that there are professionals
committed to producing quality journalism every day, right here
in Rochester. The program was funded by the City of Rochester.

Thou
When Thou Kongmany started his journey as an entrepreneur,
he faced several roadblocks. Soon after he started his flooring
business, T.K. Flooring, Thou was discouraged by those in his
network who told him that he lacked capital and resources to
succeed. By December 2016, he was ready to quit. However,
with the help of the Urban League’s Business Development
Center staff, family, and mentors, Thou persevered.
Through the Center’s business development workshops, Thou
conducted research on the flooring industry and learned that
there were no minority-owned flooring businesses. He then
worked with the Center to obtain his MBE certificate and
strengthen his business practices.
Since obtaining his MBE certification T.K. Flooring has earned
20 contracts and is on track to earn $1.7 to $2 million revenue
by the end of 2017. The Urban League’s Business Development
Center is funded by Empire State Development, State Farm, and
the Women’s Foundation.
The Urban League builds individuals’ work skills to put them on the pathway towards a fulfilling career..
