EDUCATION GOALSProvide a feeling of welcome and access to Carolina Theatre programming for all segments of the community.

Provide opportunities for people of all ages to be exposed to arts experiences.

Enhance teacher awareness of the arts as an effective medium for cultivating student appreciation of creative expression, academic learning, and artistic discipline.

Create programs to promote the interdisciplinary use of the arts and the integration of it to meet curriculum goals.

Promote the use of the arts as a vehicle for greater understanding and respect for cultural, religious, ethnic diversity, as well as differences in sexual orientation, gender and identity.

Collaborate with other arts and educational institutions and community organizations to bring rich educational experiences drawing upon the full spectrum of arts presented by The Carolina Theatre.

LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW 9:50 & 11:20 AMThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow, is a delightful, musical play based on the classic story by Washington Irving with Book, Music, and Lyrics by Paul Deiss. It is a tale loved and retold countless times. Join Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and the lovely Katrina Van Tassel, the residents of Tarry Town and, oh yes, the Headless Horseman, as they live the story made famous by the legend. This autumnal classic is faithful to the original story written by Washington Irving in 1819 and will thrill and perhaps chill your audiences (though it’s not too scary). No fall is complete without the fun of telling stories and our retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one story you won’t want to miss!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL 9:50 & 11:20 AMPerhaps the best loved holiday story of all time, our adaptation of Dickens’ classic is particularly suited for children, and features a magnificent score by Paul Deiss. Watch Mr. Scrooge have a change of heart from stone to gold as he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas. All the joy, sentiment and meaning are here, without being too scary for young audiences.

HOLIDAY SONGS: MUSIC AROUND THE WORLD9:50 & 11:20 AMWe’ve created a show we know will be a sell-out this season. Travel the globe and explore some of the world’s many winter holidays in this musical revue. Songs and stories come together for a truly magical wintertime show. We will travel from Africa to Mexico and everywhere in between. You will hear a range of songs from “I Have A Little Dreidel” and “Auld Lang Syne” to “Away in a Manger,” “Sankta Lucia” and so much more. Similar in style to out hit Holidays Around the World, this show is packed with music from many of the celebrations that happen this time of year around the globe.

PETE THE CAT 9:50 & 11:20 AMWhen Pete the Cat gets caught rocking out after bedtime, the cat-catcher sends him to live with the Biddle family to learn his manners, and boy are they square! But for the groovy blue cat, life is an adventure no matter where you wind up, so the minute Pete walks in the door, he gets the whole family rocking. The whole family, that is, except young Jimmy Biddle, the most organized second grader on the planet. As the end of second grade approaches, Jimmy has a lot of tests , and the last thing he needs is some groovy cat in his life, chang-ing his family and turning everything upside down. But when Jimmy draws a blank in art class during the last week of school, it turns out Pete is the perfect friend to help him out. Together, they set out on a mission to help Jimmy conquer second grade art, and along the way, they both learn a little something new about inspiration. Join Jimmy and Pete on an adventure of friendship, all the way to Paris and back in a VW bus.

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE 11:20 AMThe Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a family band consisting of seven blood brothers who began their musical training at the tender ages of 4 and 5 by their father, jazz trumpeter/band leader Kelan Phil Cohran (Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan, Sun Ra). Although the group’s early musical training encompassed primarily elements of instrumental perfor-mance, the brothers were personally being exposed to the music of their own generation (hip-hop, rock, reggae, to name a few) and absorbed these components into the cosmic jazz style of their father.

When Mulan learns that her ailing father is drafted into Khan’s army, she protects him by serving in his place. Disguised as a man, she risks everything to maintain family honor. This noble Chinese folk tale features an extraordinary heroine, authentic costumes and props, and lovely songs. It also provides an educational journey to the heart and soul of an ancient civilization.

HARRIET TUBMAN AND THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD 9:50 & 11:20 AMThis stirring drama with music is a classic tribute to the great American who freed herself and hundreds of her people from the bonds of slavery. As Harriet and her friend Sarah Bradford narrate her adventurous life, we share joys, sorrows and challenges faced by this brave woman who changed the world through her courage. This accurate and deeply moving musical history lesson is at turns inspiring, heart-warming and comical, full of the good humor, determination and the charity of its subject. The audience will find a new appreciation for Harriet Tubman and a deeper understanding of her time.

THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER 9:50 & 11:20 AMWhether we are very young or wise to the ways of the world, every so often each of us have to “get back to the House at Pooh Corner” to spend some tender time with faithful friends. You know their names by heart: Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga and Roo, Rabbit, Christopher Robin and of course the loveable bear called Winnie-the-Pooh. This produc-tion is faithfully based on the A.A. Milne classic of the same name. Featured stories por-tray the building of Eeyore’s house, Tigger’s arrival in the Hundred Acre Wood, the origin of the game of Pooh Sticks, Rabbit’s plan for reducing Tigger’s bounce, and Christopher Robin’s growing up and leaving for school.

JACK’S ADVENTURE IN AMERICAN HISTORY9:50 & 11:20 AMJoin Jack as he crams for his upcoming test. When his history book magically bursts, Jack meets some of the most exciting people in our nation’s history! George Washington, Ben Franklin, Henry Ford and Neil Armstrong are just some of the 22 characters who show up in this high-energy adventure. Audi-ence volunteers help write the Constitution, work on Ford’s assembly line and even demand the right to vote.

HOW MUCH ARE SEATS?Seats for all shows are $8 per student. Reduced price tickets are available for Title I schools that qualify. 7.5% sales tax is included in the tickets price.

DO CHAPERONES/INFANTS HAVE TO PAY?Yes. Schools receive one free chaperone ticket for every 30 seats purchased. Additional chaperones or parents can pay at the door on the day of the show based on availability. Infants under 1 year that will be sitting on a parent’s lap can receive complimentary entry but still need to get a ticket. Everyone must have a ticket for fire code safety.

HOW DO I RESERVE TICKETS TO A SHOW?There are three ways to reserve tickets to an Arts Discovery event:1) Complete the online reservation form at carolinatheatre.org/education2) Call the Carolina Theatre box office at (919) 560-30303) Complete the order form and mail to: Carolina Theatre Arts Discovery Series 309 W Morgan St., Durham, NC 27701Reservations  may take up to 48 hours to process. If you do not receive an emailed invoice, please contact Rebeka at 919-226-8879.

WHEN DO I PAY FOR MY CLASSROOM’S SEATS?A 25% deposit is due 1 month after reservation is placed. No seats will be held without a deposit and deposits are non-refundable. The balance of your order is due three weeks prior to the show.

WHERE WILL MY GROUP SIT?Theatre staff will seat students based on group size and grade level. Locations cannot be held for late arrivals. We request that all teachers and chaperones sit on the ends of the rows so they do not obstruct the view for smaller children seated behind them.

HOW LONG ARE THE SHOWS?Most Arts Discovery performances are 60 minutes.

WHERE IS THE THEATRE LOCATED?The Carolina Theatre is located at 309 W Morgan Street (also known as the Downtown Loop) in the heart of Downtown Durham directly adjacent to the Durham Marriott and Convention Center.

WHAT HAPPENS IF SCHOOL IS CANCELED ON THE DAY OF MY SHOW?If your school is delayed or canceled due to weather or any other unexpected event, you will receive an account credit good for any remaining show this season, based on availability. The Carolina Theatre of Durham Inc. is responsible for paying artists and performers regardless of attendance, weather, or school cancellations, and will not be able to issue refunds under any circumstances.

ARE STUDY GUIDES AVAILABLE?Yes. Almost every Arts Discovery performance at the Carolina Theatre has an accompanying study guide. Study guides can be found by visiting carolinatheatre.org/education.

IS THE THEATRE ACCESSIBLE TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES?Yes. Please contact the box office staff to make any necessary arrangements prior to the show.

WHAT PARKING FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE AND WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED?If coming by bus, please inform the box office of the number of buses that will need parking. Please check with the box office prior to your event to confirm bus parking location. Vans and cars may use the Durham Centre parking garage located across the street from the Theatre (for a fee).

WHAT TIME SHOULD MY GROUP ARRIVE AT THE THEATRE?Please arrive 45 minutes before show time.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY GROUP ARRIVES AT THE THEATRE?The group should remain on the bus or outside on the plaza while the group leader checks in with a theater house manager in the main lobby. Doors open 30 minutes before show time. Be sure to bring your receipt. It is the admission ticket to the performance.

MAY MY GROUP EAT LUNCH AT THE THEATRE?No. Eating inside the Theatre or outside on the plaza is prohibited. We apologize for any inconvenience.
