Indian Trail Basketball Program

Basics of the Program:The Coaching Staff will determine the season schedule before the season begins. Changes in the schedule may occur during the season due to unforeseen circumstances. Every and all efforts will be made to communicate any changes as soon as they happen.

Teams will be determined by the coaching staff at tryouts. All girls are welcome to tryout but not all will make the teams. There are NO guarantees of making a team even if you were in the program the year before. The best players in the coaches eyes or the players the coaches think will most benefit the program in the future will be selected by the coaches with the Varsity coach having the final authority.

Players will be placed on different level teams according to age and skill level. The Freshman Team can only be made up of Freshmen aged players. The Junior Varsity (JV) team can have players ranging from the Freshmen to Junior aged students. No Seniors can play on the JV team. The Varsity team will consist of any players in the program from the 9th grade up to the 12th grade level.

Commitment:1. All students trying out for the Indian Trail Basketball program must be able to commit to the

entire practice, game, and tournament schedule. Exceptions may be permitted on a case by case basis by the appropriate teams’ coach. Practices, games, or tournaments during Thanksgiving or Christmas break are mandatory.

2. All Parents must be prepared to assume the same commitments as players.3. The appropriate punishment will be used as consequence for not following up on your

commitment to the program. (See Punishment section)4. Participation on any other club or tournament team is strictly prohibited by the WIAA (The

Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association) during the high school season, including post season play. Specifics are outlines in the Activities Code of Conduct under - SPORTS ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL.

5. All players must have the necessary documentation confirmed with the Athletic Department to participate in any practice or game. These forms can be found at the official School Athletic website: http://indiantrail.kusd.edu/athletics/index.html, which include the following: Activities Code of Conduct, Alternate Year Physical Form, Athletic Permission Form, Concussion Release Form, Emergency Card, Emergency Health Information, and Physical Form.

Practices/Games:1. All practices are mandatory once the season starts. Starting times mean ready to practice with

all equipment on and ready, NOT arrival time. Team coaches must be notified as early as possible if a player will not be attending practice. The player must notify the coach themselves DO NOT SEND YOUR FRIENDS/TEAMMATES TO DO IT FOR YOU!!!!

2. If a player is to miss a game notify the coach of that team. As Soon As Possible!! 3. A players’ uniform identifies them as an Indian Trail Girls Basketball player and is a source of

pride and confidence. It is also a privilege. Players are required to wear their uniform properly at all times including before, after, and between games. Likewise, practice uniforms are provided to each girl at the beginning of the season. They are to be worn properly to EVERY practice.

4. Each and every player, including those on the bench, should be focused on the game at all times, and should know the game situation and be prepared to react accordingly.

5. Cheering and encouragement should always be done positively. The Coaches are the only coaches; and they should be the only ones that need to do any correcting or giving any constructive criticism.

6. The Girls Basketball takes particular pride in the sportsmanship and the way its players act at all times. Do not forget that! You are a ITHS Girls Basketball Player on and off the court, and in and out of the classroom. Make us proud!!

7. Injured players holding roster positions are required to attend all practices and games, in support of the team, unless prohibited by a doctor.

8. No one is to miss any Games or Practices once the season starts. Appropriate actions will be taken on any and all violators. (See Disciplinary Action Section).

Tournaments:1. All Indian Trail Basketball teams and all team members will stay at the same hotel/motel at each

tournament or overnight game. 2. Curfews will be set on a per/team per/game basis and will be strictly enforced. 3. The coaches will choose all room assignments. Once assigned DO NOT change!4. The coaches will determine allowable activities between games at each tournament such as

amusements, swimming, etc.

School Conduct: 1. If you check out of school, you must see a coach before you leave campus. 2. If you miss any periods of a day of a game or a day after a game you may not play in that game

or practice in that practice. Certain circumstances will apply. 3. A student must maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA to be eligible to participate in athletics. 4. Varsity players will set a model example for their peers and underclassmen teammates at all

times. However, all players in the Girls Basketball Program will be an example for the entire school to follow.

5. An athlete must be in school all day to be eligible to play in that days game. The Athletic Director and Dean must approve any exception in advance. Also all day Friday for a Saturday game.

6. You are taking on a privilege and responsibility by playing in this program. It is on honor you should not take lightly. I expect all classroom behavior to be at its best and better not hear otherwise. You not only represent the school but you also represent me and all of the other coaches on staff.

Travel: 1. Indian Trail High School will always transport our athletes to all away events. Head Coaches

must ride the bus with their athletes.2. School policy regarding travel by Varsity, JV, and Freshmen players will be followed. 3. Appropriate dress is required at all times. Teams will travel in their school uniform, team

uniform or travel warm-ups to and from all games. Everyone will be dressed the same. NO Sandals will be worn at any time by any teams.

4. All Varsity players must ride back on the bus from all away games there will be no exceptions. JV is being encouraged to do the same this year by the Athletic Department which is supported by the coaching staff.

5. Freshmen and JV players that do have to leave for whatever reason with their parents after a game must be signed out by their parents on the sign out log. A player will not be released to go with anyone other than their parents unless arrangements have been made with the Athletic Department in advance.

Conduct: At the Varsity level NO player is guaranteed playing time. Substitutes will be in uniform and on

the bench but should not expect to play in every game. They should be into the game so if called upon are ready to play and should cheer their team on NOT mope or cause other distractions on the bench. Playing time is "determined by the coaching staff to ensure the overall success of the team.

Horseplay or other distracting activities will not be tolerated. When your team is playing you should be paying attention and cheering them on.

Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated from players or parents. The coaches will warn the offender only once and then the individual, player or parent, will pay the consequence. Second offense for a player will be suspension from the team.

NO player or parent has the right to argue with an official or a coach on or off the court. Parents please wait 24 hours before approaching a coach about a problem you have or an issue

you want to make. This allows emotions on both sides to settle down and the coach and you can have a more rational conversation.

Any disrespectful act will be subject to disciplinary action possibly to include suspension. This includes talking back, arguing, throwing equipment, pouting, etc.

Players will follow and abide by al school policies. Bishop Moore has a zero tolerance drug and alcohol abuse policy. The zero tolerance policy is explained in your student handbook. The coaches will deal with violations of this policy in accordance with the published policy and will support and carry out any punishment set by the school. NO ALCOHOL OR DRUGS WHAT SO EVER, IT IS THAT SIMPLE!!!

Captains:Choosing captains for the team is a very important responsibility and should not be taken lightly. It is NOT a popularity contest and you should not vote for your friends and you should not feel intimidated into voting for someone. Only the coaches will see the votes so no one will know who you voted for. Choose wisely it does make a difference.

Things to look for in a Leader:

Respect coaches, officials, teammates, opponents, and parents. Work harder than anyone else, especially when no one is watching. Always do the best they possibly can. Learn from their mistakes and try not to repeat them. Maintain composure regardless of the circumstances. Support teammates. Never belittles teammates or opponents. Maintains a positive attitude and body language. Takes pride in their team, school and the uniform they wear and the way they appear in it Understands winning starts in the off season and in practice. Has confidence in their abilities and their teammates abilities. Puts team and teammates goals ahead of their own personal goals. Has a desire to win at all times. Is willing to admit mistakes and accept constructive criticism for them. Doesn't let missed shots, mistakes or poor officiating discourage them. Is positive in bad and good times and picks her teammates up in bad times even if no one is

doing it for her. Practices on their own just to get better. Is happy to do any duties asked of her for the program like volunteer at team functions such as

fundraisers or feeder school activities. Loves the program and wants everything about it to be the best it can be.

Look for these qualities in who you vote for, and if you are wanting to be a captain be ready to act like one. It is not just a fancy title or a meeting with the officials before a game. I expect more out of my captains including off court activities so if you want to be there is no I can't do this or why do we have to but rather when and where do you want me I am happy to help!

Remember this NOTHING is given to you; you must EARN everything. A spot on this team, playing time, starting positions, respect, and the title of team captain are not giving away freely in this program you must work hard to earn all of them!

2. Be ready to work hard this is NOT social time.

3. Bring all equipment at all times. Do not forget anything.

4. Set realistic individual goals and know and understand the team goals.

5. Assume that if something needs to be done it is your responsibility to do it.

6. Hustle and Work Hard ALL of the time.

7. Listen and Learn.

8. If you make a mistake learn from it and move on. Do not dwell on missed shots or bad games. Make the corrections and move on.

9. Ask for help if you need it

10. Help your teammates.

11. Do your best at all times and give everything you have.

12. "I can't" will not be accepted and will only turn into extra sprints!!!

13. Stay on top of your academics, school work and grades are very important.

14. Practice is over when the coaches say it is over not when your ride arrives so don't ask "what time do we finish?"

Coaches Code of Ethics Indian Trail Coaches pledge to live up to the following Code of Ethics:

I WILL place the emotional and physical well-being of my players ahead of any personal desire to win.

I WILL remember to treat each player as an individual, remembering the large spread of emotional and physical development for the same age group.

I WILL do my best to provide a safe play situation for my players.

I PROMISE to review and practice the necessary first-aid principles needed to treat injuries of players.

I WILL do my best to organize practices that are fun and challenging for all of my players.

I WILL lead by example, in demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship to all of my players.

I WILL insure that I am knowledgeable in the rules of each sport I coach, and that I will teach these rules to my players.

I WILL use those coaching techniques appropriate for each of the skills that I teach.

I WILL remember that I am a youth coach, and that the game is for the players and not the parents.

Closing: Any of these rules may be subject to change and can be adjusted if the Coaches or the Athletic Director needs to do so. Also other rules can be added to the team rules if needed!
