Discussion about why Alateen Coordinator and SCAC Chair did not attend the committee meeting. Proposed Agenda Items at the Assembly: Alateens; Election of Alt. Delegate; Clickers; Coordinator Reports; Delegate’s Re-port

Suggestions from DRs:

1. Jayme give an update of Task Forces at the Assembly;

2. Reports be timed but all reports heard at the Assem-bly; and

3. More workshops (Hot Topics) at the Assembly;

Jayme inquired if the AWSC wants to rent clickers for the May Assembly. There was a comment that the Board should discuss renting clickers for the May Assembly. Then there was a suggestion to take a straw poll about whether DRs want to rent clickers for the May Assembly. Straw vote showed more committee members in favor of not renting clickers for the May Assembly. A past dele-gate made the comment that there were more GRs at the Nov 2015 Assembly in favor of the purchase of the click-ers than in favor of rental.

Reports

Delegate

Delegates are in the final stages of preparations for the 2016 World Service Conference (WSC) to be held in April at the Wyndham Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach, close to the World Service Office. Beginning on the first business day in January (Jan 3 this year), the WSO emails files to the Delegates on a weekly basis so that we can be prepared for efficient discussions and decision making at the WSC, affecting Al-Anon as a whole and for the good of Al-Anon as a whole. Feed-back in the form of comments and questions are solic-ited from the Delegates, with deadlines for each file that we receive.

When we register at 3pm on the day before the Con-ference starts, we receive our Conference Notebook with fresh copies of all these files, as well as new files and answers to all the questions submitted ahead of time. Personally, I substitute their pristine copies with my own copies filled with my notes and questions. This is the first opportunity the Delegates have to see the questions submitted by the other Delegates, and to read the answers written by Trustees and WSO Staff members.

As you can see, we hit the ground running. Burning the midnight oil the night before the Conference officially starts truly is the only way to finish our preparations for the Conference since we receive new materials when we arrive. No time for socializing if you want to finish preparing. Even with all this prep work, we still come up with new questions to ask at the microphone on every topic. This is why there is a strict 2-minute, one-time-at-the-mic limit.

2016 Members Survey Jan 15 – Feb 26, through this coming Friday, on mem-bers website. It is the first thing you see on the homep-age. Participation in the Al-Anon survey by all members, regardless of length of membership in the program, level of involvement in service work, or any other fac-tor, is of the utmost importance, is considered service work, and is greatly valued.

Have the members of your Al-Anon meeting filled out the survey? Have you? Please do it tonight, and please encourage others, certainly by Friday’s deadline, Feb 26.

Updates of Concept Eleven descriptive text, begun at the 2015 World Service Conference, will be finalized at the 2016 WSC. The SCWS DRs also gave their input on this, one year ago. Thank you!

65th Anniversary of Al-Anon 1951 – 2016. We will celebrate the 65th anniversary of Al-Anon, the day after the WSC (World Service Confer-ence), on April 16, 2016 with an Open House at the WSO and a banquet. Any member can attend. The Open House is free of charge. The banquet is $55. See the order form on the home page of the members website. It is the second of the rotating announce-ments on that page. What does your district plan to do to celebrate? Your meeting? We will celebrate at the Jan 21, 2017 SOS.

2016 World Service Conference (WSC) April 11-15, 2016. Every Tradition and every Concept apply to the WSC. The WSC is an annual business meeting of Delegates (volunteers), Trustees (volunteers), Executive Committees (volunteers), and World Service Office Staff (paid workers). The WSC runs for five consecutive 12-hour days and it is where decisions are made that affect Al-Anon as a whole. The 2016 WSC is going to review the amendments proposed for the descriptive text for Concept Eleven, for the section on Memorial Contributions on page 95 of the Service Manual, for the section on Conventions and Events (what can and cannot be announced in meetings), suggestions proposed by the Literature Committee, the 2015 Annual Report, the 2016 budget, etc. The WSC also will hear presentations from the 2015-2016 Task Forces, each of which consists of Dele-gates, Trustees and WSO Staff members, and will dis-cuss Chosen Agenda Items which may be submitted by Delegates and WSO Staff and are selected by the Dele-gates.

If the GRs in your district would like to make small love gifts for the Delegate to share with the other Confer-ence members, that would be lovely. There are about

105 people at the Conference. The hotel will hold the mail if it arrives within 3 days of the start of the WSC. If it is too soon, they won’t hold it. If it arrives late, they will return it, so please put the SCWS address in Cypress as the return address. The best day to mail it, to arrive on time, would be April 7. The hotel address was projected onto the screen for those present at the AWSC (Area World Service Committee meeting).

2016 WSC Summary The WSC Summary goes onto the members website in July al-anon.org/members click on Service Structure tab, then on District Resources or Area Resources, then on 2016 conference Summary Committee members will get a copy at the Aug AWSC.

2016 WSConference Theme Realizing Our Spiritual Potential

Feb 2016 COB Letter al-anon.org/members Click on WSO tab, then on Board of Trustees then click on the keyboard.

Please invite your group members to read the posted quarterly Chairman of the Board (COB) Letters. They are very informative and easy to understand!

The “COB Letter” has four sections: 1 Letter from the COB (Chairman of the Board of Trustees), 2 Policy Up-date, 3 Finance Update, and 4 Conference Leadership Team Update.

1. letter from COB. More about the role of the Trustees… The Trustees all are Al-Anon members, each serves only a short time, serving up to two 3-year terms as a volun-teer (unpaid). Each year one-third of the Board of Trus-tees finishes their 3-year terms and therefore each year a new one-third of the Trustees is elected by the Board of Trustees with traditional approval by the WSC. The COB Letter gives the list of nominees that will be presented to the 2016 WSC for traditional approval of the Regional Trustees, Trustees at Large, Board officers, and At-Large member of the ECRPM (Executive Committee for Real Property Management).

The goal of the Board Strategic Plan is:

The AFG, Inc., Board of Trustees will raise the fellow-ship’s awareness of the Trustees’ relationship to the Al-Anon groups and WSC, while articulating and express-ing the “why” of the Board’s work.

The Board’s Mission Statement is to “Anticipate the fu-ture and Al-Anon’s place in it and ensure that the neces-sary resources are available.” One of our important re-sources is the staff working on our behalf at the World

Page 9: 2016 55th World Service onference Realizing Our Spiritual ...€¦ · Southern alifornia World Service Area ulletin—Feb. 20, 2016 SWS Website—scws-al-anon.org Vol. 58, No 1—2016

“Financial matters” section on pages 95-99. Finally, an Open Policy Committee meeting will be held during Conference week so that we can hear Trustees discuss the topic of the designated terms “open” and “closed,” describing meetings.

The last paragraph of the Policy Update states that, “Members need to know that all topics discussed at the Policy Committee meetings are raised by either an Al-Anon member or a group seeking clarification of any matter relating to the fellowship. It is the Policy Committee’s responsibility to interpret these topics in light of Al-Anon’s Traditions, providing clarity and help to those who inquire about matters important to indi-viduals, groups, or Areas. Any member of Al-Anon/Alateen who has not received sufficient clarification through his or her links of service is encouraged to write to the World Service Office, requesting that the idea or question be sent to the Policy Committee for consideration.” In other words, topics are not initiated by the Policy Committee.

3. Finance Update. What spiritual principles in financial matters can you think of? Gratitude. Participation is the key to harmony. Trust in the Higher Power, PLUS do my footwork. 7th Tradition, fully self-supporting; one side of the coin: I give what I can; other side of the coin: tell me how it is because I cannot adjust if I don’t know how it is.

At the May 2015 Assembly, the GRs committed to talk-ing with their groups about increasing contributions to the WSO so that we could be fully self-supporting and avoid further transfers from the Reserve Fund. The groups in CA(S) did contribute more, $3800 more in 2015 than in 2014. The handout of group contributions by districts shows that (69.7% of) the groups in CA(S) contributed nearly $97,394 in 2015, averaging $124 per group, compared to $93,608 in 2014. Note that the free Forum to all groups costs $100,000. Each DR received today the listing of the 2015 contributions per group in their district. Where is your district on the list? Does your meeting budget a specific amount to contribute to our World Service Office annually to sup-port the $268 worth of services it provides to your meeting?

Literature sales took a dive in 2015. In the past few years, lit sales have decreased each year, so we had budgeted for $10,000 less in sales, but it turned out to be $237,000 less in 2015. What happened? Note that through 2014, 2/3 of the revenue to cover the expens-es comes from literature sales. We believe this trend in decreasing lit sales will continue and that we will need to rely more and more on contributions. Remem-

Service Office. We want to keep and attract talent, as well as to be known as an employer of choice. Therefore, the board is working on an “AFG Compensation Philosophy.”

AFG Connects is the new communication tool for service leaders in every Area. Most Coordinators, officers and all DRs have a community on AFG Connects, who are em-bracing the discussion threads, sharing concerns and ex-perience with others in the same community.

Al-Anon’s Sixth International Convention will be held in Baltimore, Maryland on July 6-8, 2018. Start saving now so that you will have the money set aside in your own personal ample reserve to attend.

To quote Paula B., 2014-2016 Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, from the last paragraph of the Feb 2016 COB Letter: “I know of and trust the dedication and commit-ment that your Board of Trustees brings to everything they do on behalf of Al-Anon Family Groups, Inc.” That is such an important statement. I can add to her quote by saying that every time one gets to serve at another level, one comes to understand and appreciate the work that is done at that level. “Them vs. Us” comes from a lack of trust in the Trusted Servants, …who all are Al-Anon mem-bers.

Interestingly, there is a related quote from Paula’s prede-cessor, Karen R., 2011-2013 Chairperson of the Board of Trustees (COB), on page 14 of the Jan 2010 Forum, in In-side Al-Anon, in an article titled, “Participation is the Key to Harmony.” Karen stated, “I stayed angry, accusatory and mistrustful. So much so that I faxed my resume to the WSO to apply for that one-year Southwest Regional Trus-tee position so as to prove my point, which was that the Board would not even consider me – because I was diffi-cult and had opinions contrary to their agenda.” Karen indeed became a Trustee at that time, and eventually the COB.

2. Policy Update. The 2015 WSC requested language for allowing a memorial contribution for a deceased Al-Anon member, from a family member who is not a member of Al-Anon. This new language will be considered at the 2016 WSC. Secondly, pages 85-86 and 124 of the “Digest of Al-Anon and Alateen Policies” are being reworked by the Policy Committee. A member (from CA(S)) who was concerned that the text on “Announcing Events at Meetings” was not clear brought this to the Policy Com-mittee because some members have been working around the policy to suit their needs. Thirdly, the Policy Committee continues considering revisions to the

The next Area Alternate Delegate We will elect the new Alternate Delegate at the May Special Election Assembly. There are responsibilities of the candidates and of the GRs (the voters). All need to read the job description, election procedures, (both on SCWS website), Concept 9 – qualities of a leader, what do we want/need in a leader?

Resumes of candidates (past DRs) are due by 9pm on Sat Mar 19, sent to both the Delegate and the Immedi-ate Past Delegate. KBDM: resumes will be posted on SCWS website, email notification will be sent to all As-sembly members, and each candidate will speak for 2 minutes at the microphone about why they would be an asset as an SCWS officer.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind attention to all the material in this report.

Respectfully Submitted,

Elizabeth K., Delegate CA(S), Panel 55, 2015-2017

ber, the only two sources of revenue for the WSO are member contributions and literature sales – per Tradi-tion 7, we are fully self-supporting.

As part of the Finance Committee’s duty to keep a watch-ful eye on expenditures, we must find places to cut ex-penditures while not affecting core services to the mem-bers. The suspension of the complimentary copy of The Forum to the groups is one such action taken in 2016, which costs $100,000. (Note that this is approx how much groups in CA(S) contributed in 2015.)

2016 WSO Budget See page 11 in this Bulletin for the 2016 WSO Budget.

1,649,337 actual contrib. in 2015 1,800,000 budgeted contrib. in 2016 Let’s keep up the momentum and have groups continue sending more to support the services our groups require.

2,822,801 actual lit sales minus printing in 2015 2,600,000 budgeted lit sales minus printing in 2016 We must be realistic about the decrease in lit sales con-tinuing, so less lit sales is in the budget for 2016.

51,415 actual investment income/tsfr from Reserve in 2015

223,000 budgeted inv. income/tsfr from Reserve in 2016 We did not receive enough revenue in 2015 from contri-butions and lit sales. We must be realistic about this and, for now, budget a large transfer from the Reserve for 2016.

4,873,000 budgeted estimated revenue 4,937,000 budged operating expenses = -$119,000 Yes, MINUS. This is 2% of $5 million Unbalanced budget.

The WSO is looking for ways to cut back on expenses with as minimal cut backs on services as possible.

If we look at budgets in recent years, we see that in the year 2000: expenses = -3,940,000 support = +4,089,000 That means it was $149,000 net income!

This $4,089,000 of support is worth $6,000,000 today when we factor in inflation, yet in 2015, the WSO re-ceived only $4,754,000 of support (literature sales + con-tributions).

If I only knew, I would adjust.

There are several articles related to financial considera-tions…

Alternate Delegate

The 2016 SOS has come and gone. People I have spoken with enjoyed the SOS. The panels were excellent, along with the food served for lunch. I would like to thank everyone who helped me coordinate the SOS. It was a

steep learning curve but with everyone’s help the SOS was a success. I would also like to say again how much we all enjoyed hearing from our speaker, Larcine G.

One last item, I would like to remind everyone that in May, at the Assembly, we will have a special election for Alternate Delegate. The deadline to submit a re-sume is March 19, 2016. I hope that all who qualify will give it some thought. If you feel this is not the right time for you, there may be someone else you could encourage to run. The resume form is found on the SCWS web site.

Thank you, Pete B.

Immediate Past Delegate

I am a grateful member of the world-wide fellowship of Al-Anon and Alateen. I have decided to use my re-port time for something other than what the Immedi-ate Past Delegate would usually report on.

I think it is time to talk about the elephant in the room. I have thought about this and prayed about it. I got on my knees this morning and I asked my Higher Power to guide my thoughts and words.

It is about Alateen and the relentless emails that are being sent to most of the District Reps, some of the SCWS Board and other “interested individuals”.

Let me take you back to 2003. Our Area was torn apart by the Board of Trustees motion that each Area must have safety and behavioral requirements for Alateen and Al-Anon Member Involved in Alateen Ser-vice (AMIAS) in place by December 31, 2004. Let there be no misconception about the AFG Board of Trustees (BOT) motion. The motion cannot be overturned by a vote of the Conference or an Area; it only can be changed by a new motion by the Trustees. The re-quirement of having all adults in the presence of Alateens (legal minors) to be certified is not going to change.

Anything that goes through the Board of Trustees comes from the Groups. The Trustees are our trusted servants.

We were not aware of the years prior to 2003 that it was being discussed at the WS Conference. Maybe we were informed, but maybe it was in the years where the Delegate read her report and perhaps some went to sleep! Perhaps none of us read our Conference Summaries either. It was brought back to the Area in 2004 with opinions and tears. Everyone was divided!

SCWS Website—scws-al-anon.org Southern California World Service Area Bulletin—Feb. 20, 2016

There was no discussion regarding following the group conscience whether we like it or not, even when we don’t agree.

In October of 2004 a Special Assembly was held to dis-cuss and vote on the Board of Trustees motion which stated that each Area must have safety and behavioral requirements in place by December 2004. The Special Assembly was very contentious and heated. Eventually a vote was taken and the motion failed to pass! After the vote, some members acted as if the Special Assembly was over and left for the day. Then the question was raised concerning what would happen now? There con-tinued to be more discussion and the Special Assembly was reminded that if the Area did not have something in place by December 2004, our Alateen Groups would not be registered with WSO and therefore could not meet as Alateen. Another motion was drafted and seconded. The ballots were counted and the motion passed!

This didn’t end the controversy. The members who left early were upset and overall there was gossip, dissension and criticism of WSO and SCWS.

The Area has been trudging uphill ever since. There were many aspects of the Board’s decision that, unfortu-nately, were not followed – a couple of examples – (1) recertification workshops for AMIASs each year and (2) the requirement of event plans for all Alateen Events. As the Area tries to catch up, each time a new safety meas-ure is introduced by the Area that should have been in place since 2004, we are blasted with objections from a few individuals. What other organization that deals with minor children has such a push-back to legal require-ments? Al-Anon is not above the law, as stated in our Service Manual twice, pages 42 and 54. This is 2016 not 1990. It is about the protection of other people’s minor children and we are legally and morally obligated to pro-tect them.

Well, we have come a long way. Yes, we have! The par-adigm is shifting and members are beginning to under-stand it all.

In these current, relentless emails, rumors are being re-ported as facts. In some cases the emails have been in-timidating and have felt threatening. This is hard on eve-ryone, especially the individuals working the positions. How can we expect to get good people to do these ser-vice positions when they must spend an enormous amount of time working issues that are unrelated to their job description?

No matter what information is communicated to some individuals, it is not accepted. Your support is needed.

“Al-Anon and Alateen members expect a safe and pleasant environment when they attend a meeting, and when one member causes unrest due to inappro-priate or intimidating behavior, the entire group could be affected. Groups are within their autonomy to es-tablish group behavioral guidelines in a manner that reflects their group conscience and abides by the Tra-ditions.

When the behavior of any member impacts the group, members apply the Traditions to the problem, and de-termine how best to approach the individual(s) in-volved, to ask the member to change the behavior in question. This can be an exercise in applying Al-Anon principles so that the message is not a personal attack, but rather a request based on what is best for the Al-Anon group.” Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual 2014-2017, page 54.

I responded to one of the emails. In that email I pro-vided historical and factual data. It was about clarifi-cation and transparency regarding some of the state-ments in the emails. It fell on deaf ears.

In the past the culture that we have had has always been – “it is the way we have always done it.” And – “if it works don’t fix it.” In an effort to maintain ano-nymity and confidentiality, many situations with Alateens or AMIASs were kept from you, our mem-bers. The situations that have occurred involved the safety of the Alateens. For example, Alateens on the roof of a hotel at 3:00AM, Alateens in a swimming pool of a hotel at 1:00AM and age-inappropriate fe-males with older Alateen males, Alateens sleeping in hotel hallways, Alateens sleeping in hotel laundry carts, more than twenty Alateens in a hotel room with one AMIAS, and the AMIAS forced to sleep on the floor in front of the door to assure Alateens do not leave the room in the middle of the night. Hotels stip-ulate that there be no more than four to a room and we have been allowing as many Alateens that can fit in a hotel room. This creates many legal and moral liabilities for all of us, including the Alateens.

Another situation we have had is Alateens becoming AMIAS at 21 after they immediately age out of Alateen without any break. One day they are a 20-year-old Alateen and the next day they are a 21-year- old AMIAS. We expected them to act as adults and not as Alateens. There have been many other inci-dents.

Now since having these safeguards with the Area Alateen Safety and Behavioral Requirements in place, the incidents have dropped significantly. Again this is

2016 and not the 1990s.

In 2010 there was a large financial shortfall for South-ern California Alateen Conference (SCAC) because the contract was read wrong! The 2010-2011 SCAC Com-mittee came to the Area and requested help. The Area responded by requesting the groups of SCWS voluntari-ly contribute money for the shortfall. SCAC’s financial viability was saved.

Then in late 2011, it was the discovered that there had been a theft of the money from the SCAC bank account. Again the groups of SCWS came through with their vol-untary contributions to help defray the shortfall. The Groups have always come through. Again, SCAC’s fi-nancial viability was saved.

The end result is that the SCWS now has oversight of the SCAC bank account which the Alateens themselves put into the SCAC Bylaws by a 100% unanimous vote of the Alateens at 2013. For example, if there is a with-drawal from the account, the SCWS Treasurer is noti-fied from the bank via email. The SCWS Treasurer and the Area Alateen Sponsor Coordinator both serve on the SCAC Board of Directors.

The Area has never before had this type of relationship with SCAC. There is a trust and an understanding and that has never existed before. In the past when any questions were asked to the SCAC Committee about financial matters, even how much SCAC was paying for the Conference, the reply from the SCAC Committee was “it is none of your business”. This is even while the groups were contributing to SCAC by their voluntary contributions. Well, we have come a long way from those days!

Now what is being asked? That we change what we have. Concept 5: The rights of appeal and petition pro-tect minorities and insure that they be heard.

Knowledge Based Decision Making (KBDM) states: “However large the majority is, the minority has a right to be heard. But the minority voice must raise issues that haven’t already raised. To have a minority report requires new information. I don’t like the decision is not a reason for a minority appeal. Why is the decision wrong and what are the new facts?

Let us remember that once a group conscience decision is made, we support the decision whether we agree with it or not. See page 53 of the Service Manual.

Remember we are all trusted servants. We are all vol-unteers and we give freely of our time. Some literally spend 40 hours or more per week on volunteer posi-tions. Please, let us presume goodwill!

Love in service, Jayme C. Panel 52, CA(S)

Area Chair

I recently listened to a recording from our 2011 SOS

held in Camarillo, CA. The speaker was Ric B., Executive

Director, WSO. He spoke of the importance of the quali-

ty of our decisions we make in Al-Anon service. We

want quality decisions based and grounded on spiritual

principles we can follow. Decisions that help us fulfill

our primary purpose in Al-Anon service. In our com-

mittee meeting today we will use KBDM as we seek a

consensus in our decisions. We want quality decisions

that help Al-Anon grow in carrying the message of help

and hope.

Secretary

Greetings! Just a gentle reminder that at every Assem-bly and Committee Meeting, the minutes from the pre-vious meeting will be approved. For example, the Feb-ruary Committee meeting Minutes are approved at the August Committee meeting and vice versa. Likewise, the Minutes of the Area Assembly in May are approved in November, and vice versa.

ASK IT BASKET

February SCWS Committee Meeting Question: When will we know if clickers will be used in May? In order to tell the GRs.

Answer: The question will come up at the next SCWS Board meeting, on May 1, 2016. A Past Delegate point-ed out at the February SCWS Committee meeting that the differential between the GRs voting at the Novem-ber Assembly not to purchase (40%) and those voting to rent (15% or less) was large enough to indicate that in-deed the GRs want to purchase, and they want different specific details than the ones proposed in the motion.

More discussion was needed in November. The Com-mittee (DRs, Coordinators, Liaisons and Officers) took a consensus vote indicating that they were not in favor of spending between $1,600 to $2,000 just for the May As-sembly meeting, which probably reflects that differential between the two votes.

Question: Is there a guideline regarding “50/50” Raffles/Opportunity Raffle that is split with the winner up to $600.00 but they extra balance is given back to the event or another drawing to split balance with a second win-ner: It was mention a 90/10 rule for non-profit Raffles?

Answer: The Service Manual points out that the use of Raffles/Lottery Tickets is a legal issue. If we go by the Service Manual (page 98) it states that entities that are not registered as charities could be prohibited from such sales by state or provincial laws. Thus, if the entity is not registered as a charitable organization then someone from that entity should contact a California based tax attorney, otherwise the entity is risking breaking the law.

Question: Our Service Manual states on page 98 “Local statutes must also be investigated and must be complied with in order to prevent individual members and Al-Anon as a whole from becoming involved in public controver-sy”.

Answer: Once determining that the proposed raffle and/or lottery is legally permitted within the Area where it is to be held (if that is the case), additional precautions need to be taken so that we are not diverted from our primary purpose and do not imply endorsement. Distri-bution and sale of raffle/lottery tickets should be limited to Al-Anon/Alateen meetings and events.

Question: Approximately 1/3 of meetings held in So. Cal. Area 4 are in Spanish. Where is the Area at, in its discus-sion of formalizing a translation position so all written SCWS material may be available in Spanish?

Answer: When the position became vacant during the 2012-2014 term, the SCWS Board notified the member-ship in the Area that the position is available. No one applied. When members were invited to submit a re-sume for the 2015-2017 coordinator positions, still no one applied for the position. We certainly are interested in having a Diversity Coordinator, such as they have in California-North, who would coordinate/oversee a team of volunteer translators of written documents. This is an unpaid volunteer position with SCWS, just as the inter-preter at Assembly meetings is an unpaid volunteer posi-tion with SCWS. Since the coordinator would be oversee-ing others who would do the written translations, being fluent in a language other than English is not required.

Indeed, requests to have documents translated into multiple languages could be honored with a Diversity Coordinator position being filled, with an available list of volunteers to do the written translations. There are meetings in California-South that carry literature in Russian, Chinese, Korean, German and Farsi, and per-haps others too. The Orange County Intergroup re-cently had a request for interpreting/translation into Vietnamese. There is great potential for interpreting/translation into multiple languages for the Assembly meetings.

Question: Why are there no current motions for 2014 and 2015 posted on SCWS website?

Answer: The current motions list already has been updated and should be on the SCWS web site before this Bulletin is published.

Question: Why are we passing a card for a member who is not present? This is an outside issue. We do not do this for all members who loses a loved one. I have tried to address this issue in our district, as an outside issue, but when area leadership does this practice it becomes double-headed management.

Answer: In hindsight it was a mistake to pass around a condolence card.

Area Alateen Sponsor Coordinator

Area Alateen Task Force vs. Area Alateen Resolution Committee: A Task Force is defined as “temporary unit of people established to work on a single defined task or activi-ty. They use the resources available such as members of the task force and knowledge from staff … A task force may fulfill the recommendations made by a thought force. Task forces are the “doers’” (Service Manual, page 69).

The one Area Alateen Task Force, also approved by the Assembly 2013 vote, will be reviewing the follow-ing issues: (1) overnighters; (2) upper age limit of Alateen members; and (3) special needs Alateens. This task force is in the final selection process for day/time to meet and plans to begin work by early March 2016.

before the SCAC Registration Packet can be released.

Alateen Event Plan:

The Area Alateen Sponsor Coordinator was asked to make Event Plans a top priority of this panel in order that the Area meet its responsibility and commitment to providing a safe environment for Alateen events.

The Alateen Event Plan format was revised as of Octo-ber 16, 2015. The Event Plan was revised to provide more information, guidance and explanation on how to effectively, accurately and fully answer each question. The revisions were not due to any change in policy or procedure. The 2015-2016 Recertification Workshop focuses on how to complete an Event Plan.

The revisions were based on a pattern of issues that seemed common to every completed Event Plan. This pattern was not the fault of anyone completing an Event Plan, but rather was attributable to the actual format of the plan. It became obvious that more direc-tions and instructions were need in the format in order that the required information would be included.

The revised Event Plan did introduce a final Event Plan approval deadline established by the Area Alateen Res-olution Committee. The Event Plan final approval date is 15 days before the event date (30 days before an overnight/multi-day event date).

Ratio of Event Sponsors/AMIAS Chaperones per spe-cific number of Alateens:

Keeping the responsibility of safety in mind, each Area has the responsibility to set minimum ratios for AMIAS per number of Alateens for each type of Alateen event to ensure proper supervision.

The Area Alateen Resolution Committee is in the pro-cess of establishing a minimum ratio of AMIAS supervi-sion per specific number of Alateens for each type of Alateen event (i.e., convention, fundraiser, conference, events with Al-Anon members participating, et al.) This is an ongoing process and ratios will be announced as decisions are reached.

The ratio currently established for Conventions is: One Event Sponsor/AMIAS Chaperone and one Alateen Event Security Team Member for every 10 Alateens attending the convention. The Alateen Event Security Team member is counted as one in the group of 10 Alateens. The ratio of one AMIAS and one Alateen Security Team member was suggested by and developed based on the very successful SCAC Sponsor/Co-Sponsors - SCAC Committee model.

There is no time limit for the Task Force’s work. They are done when they say they are done. There are no updates on their progress as everything reviewed and discussed in any format is confidential until it reports its findings to the Assembly.

The Area Alateen Resolution Committee was estab-lished by the Assembly via the May 2013 vote to ac-cept and implement the current Area Alateen Safety and Behavioral Requirements. In this document the resolution committee is described as “the decision making entity for issues pertaining to Alateen” (page 11). This committee would never step in and consid-er an issue that should be decided by a vote of the GRs at an Assembly (i.e., revision of the Area Alateen Safety and Behavioral Requirements, new or revised Alateen budget expenditures not already authorized per the Area bylaws or Assembly vote, or recommen-dations from the Alateen Task Force, et al.).

AMIAS Recertification Workshop: A gentle reminder The Recertification Workshop schedule is posted on the Alateen Sponsorship tab of the Area’s web site. There will be no make-up or last minute sessions added.

Every AMIAS is required to attend an annual Recerti-fication Workshop between September 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016 to be eligible to have his/her certifica-tion be extended beyond May 31, 2016. The last workshop for this recertification period is scheduled on April 30, 2016. If an AMIAS does not meet the recertification eligibility, he or she will not be able to attend SCAC 2016. Please check the Alateen Sponsorship tab on the Area’s web site for the schedule of remaining workshops … http://scws-al-anon.org.

Districts may need to make changes to the schedule so please be sure to check the web site for the most current schedule and to confirm your RSVP with the session contact.

SCAC: SCAC 2016 is scheduled for June 24 – 26, 2016 pend-ing final approval of the SCAC Event Plan.

In order for the Event Plan to receive final approval, every AMIAS making a commitment to be of service as an AMIAS chaperone must provide an official guarantee of this commitment. SCAC is an Alateen Event and must meet the same requirements as any Alateen Event. A letter via email has been sent to every AMIAS, asking for commitments to attend SCAC 2016 to be emailed to the SCAC 2016 Sponsor.

The SCAC Event Plan must also receive final approval

I will be following up on the “Group History Checklist” that was distributed at the May meeting. We will start updating the history of all the meetings in Southern California that want to participate. We hope to put this rich history in a binder that can be shared with all of our fellowship. Please bring your completed form to future SCWS meetings in February and August.

You can also go online and access the “Group History Checklist” form as well. It is found on the WSO web-site at Archives e – Community, form AR6. Upon com-pletion it can be sent to me at: [email protected].

I will have another very interesting flyer containing a great bit of history to share with all in attendance at the January SOS Workshop meeting. It concerns Al-Anon Family Groups participation for the very first time, at the 1955 AA International Convention in St. Louis, Missouri. Our first publication, “The Al-Anon Family Groups- A Guide for the Families of Problem Drinkers” was made available at this event.

This is the 60th anniversary of our first book.

Also, I will have copies for distribution of the 1976 Program for our SOS Workshop. It was a 2-day event held in Long Beach that became the format used for our AFG Convention that is celebrating 40 years in 2016.

This is our 42 Annual SOS Workshop. That is awe-some!

Until next time. With Love in Service, Dan P., Archives Coordinator

Area Alateen Process Person (AAPP)

There were 31 new AMIASs certified during the fourth quarter of 2015 and 39 AMIASs processed during the first quarter of 2016. Currently there are 396 certified AMIASs and 103 registered Alateen meetings.

All AMIAS certifications expire on May 31, 2016 (the Ar-ea Alateen Safety and Behavioral Requirements state a different date so please be aware of this corrected date). If an AMIAS attended an SCWS AMIAS Recertifica-tion Workshop between June 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016, then their AMIAS certification is automatically extended to May 31, 2017. If an AMIAS was newly certified after Jan 1, 2016 then they are exempt from attending the Recertification Workshop before May 31, 2016 and are automatically extended to May 31, 2017.

Please send all AMIAS applications and Alateen Meeting GR-3 forms via email to [email protected]. Emailing documents provides you with a submission copy for your records and allows me to expedite the pro-cessing of new AMIAS applications and new Alateen Meetings within one week of receipt.

Thank you for letting me be of service! Tarisa R.

Alateen Coordinator

We are currently working on the SCAC event plan and registration packet. In order for the event plan to be ap-proved, we need to reach a certain AMIAS to Alateen ratio. This means that we need as many AMIAS as possi-ble to commit to attending SCAC as soon as possible. If you are an AMIAS and even slightly considering attend-ing SCAC, please ask Cathleen or Sean for my infor-mation. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have. Our monthly fundraising events have been very successful thanks to my amazing and hardworking committee. More specifically, our most suc-cessful fundraiser this year has been the November luncheon, so thank you all so much for your incredible support. I would also like to welcome any current AMIAS out to our monthly SCAC events. I hope to see you there, and thank you again for all of your continued support towards SCAC.

In love and service, SCAC 2016 Chairperson

If there is a financial contribution made, the group may be Inactive for up to 7 years. After those lengths of time, a group is Marked for Deletion.

Marked for Deletion 65 In the first quarter of the year, these meetings are delet-ed from the WSO database. Their identification numbers are retired and cannot be re-used.

#2: Where to submit Group Updates/Registrations Please continue to educate our GRs to use ONLY our SCWS website to fill out any group records changes that pertain to the SCWS/WSO information flow. They do not need to duplicate their efforts by sending the same infor-mation to WSO, since I access the WSO data base direct-ly.

#3 : DRs and District Records If any DRs need help accessing, downloading, and organ-izing their District records, please give me a call or email me and we can set up an appointment to go through the process. I will also be available during the lunch break today to meet with any DRs who may have any questions or concerns regarding their district’s records.

When you email me about any meetings in your district, it would be very helpful for you to put the group’s WSO ID# in the subject line of the email. That makes my job so much easier—and I’ll get back to you more quickly!

#4 : Universal Group Update Form Our Website Coordinator has designed a revision of the on-line Registration/Group Records Change Form that we have been evolving over the past year. We anticipate publishing the first version of it on the website before the May Assembly.

Cooperating with the Professional Community (CPC) I emailed the SCWS district repre-

sentatives and officers to remind them of the February deadline for ordering the 2016 edition of Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism. (The 2016 AFAs will be delivered in April.) I

ordered copies of the 2016 AFA myself to distribute to clinics and other professional organizations during the year. I participated in a conference call with District 27 to ask for their input on professional organizations, health fairs, and conferences where I can distribute AFAs and other Al-Anon literature. I also requested volunteers to join me for health fairs or conferences. Later, I spoke privately with District 27’s H & I coordi-nator and she suggested several medical clinics and therapy centers in various parts of Southern Califor-nia, which I will be contacting. Thank you for letting me be of service. Melva C. CPC Coordinator

Hospitality

Thank you so much to the districts who brought snacks to the Committee Meeting. As I announce the districts scheduled to bring snacks for the May 21 As-sembly, please acknowledge me. Those districts are: District 3, District 24, District 42, District 54, District 57, District 60, District 64 and District 69. Please be prepared to prep your food (or have it already prepped) and put it on the tables.

In my emails to the districts I have been asking, in a general way, for volunteers to help set up and clean up. Some districts have responded, but many have not. I need more help. I realize now that this is not a one-man job. I will be assigning time slots to specific districts for help. You may recruit someone to come along for this task who is not a GR or DR.

Also, I will not be here for the Assembly on May 21. I need someone to take my place that day or we won’t have hospitality, which means we won’t have coffee, water or snacks. Is there someone or is there a dis-trict willing to volunteer to take on this commitment? Thank you Ana, DR 42.

who can, donate? Books sold at our cost allow us to buy another book, so that book buys another book. Pamphlets are free, but we could ask for the donation price of the pieces to those who can. Have a lending library to check out books? This is a request. Maybe we try it for 30 days. The meeting voted and funds were donated and the meeting is healthy. We are car-rying the message of hope from Al-Anon to the mem-bers who walk through the doors. They take our words and messages as well as the written word from our literature that they can refer back to over and over.

When I was new, I got literature. I attended a New-comers meeting and got the packet, then I came back every week to build my library. That literature was a constant reminder of the meeting I attended and the kind of people I would find at meetings like those.

Probably my most important job is to encourage Area 4/California South members to send in sharings. Al-Anon’s Literature committee at the WSO was given approval to develop a few pieces of literature. That literature is written by us and for us. WE MUST turn in shares. Some of you are having workshops to encour-age this! Invite me! Invite me to cover this at your dis-trict meeting for 15 mins. I will do my best to support you in some way.

I mentioned to my district and my meeting that I would never ask you to do something I would not do. So, I will sign off on my February Committee Message, so I can get to the www.al-anon-org site, go to the members site, and find the page where they need shares for in the intimacy and new daily reader. Let it begin with me.

Literature

Hello Area California South, Area 4!

For many of us, we are into our second year of service. It is time to take stock of what we hoped to do with our commitment and what time we have left to get it done.

As Literature Coordinator, I am all about Literature! What are you reading? What am I reading? What is your meeting selling? I have heard from many, that literature is tough to keep in stock due to the price of pamphlets and books. The treasury cannot sustain an ample display they have said. Really! Hum. I begin to think. What can your meeting have on hand, that is going to give any new member or regular member something to pick up that will give them an “ah ha” moment.

For sure we need at least one service manual and one groups at work. How about directories? At some meetings, they are sold at cost and given free only to newcomers. That tool is a necessity as not all members have internet access. How about a selection of pam-phlets? A printout of the “Forum Magazine” order form! How about some wallet cards, a daily reader, ”How Al-Anon Works” paperback, conflict resolution packet, or one or two of our workbooks. We have choices!

I heard a member say recently that there meeting was having low funds for a very long time. I thought of this scenario--- One day as group rep, we pose a question to the group. What if we take a group conscience to have more donations? What if we pass a basket, for those

Although we are a small district, we are trying to cre-ate opportunities for connecting our meeting groups to each other. By providing the venue, members can share their experience, strength and hope, fellowship and be of service. We will be celebrating our 14th an-nual day in Al-Anon, Serenity by the Sea, Saturday, February 27th. Registration is significantly higher than last year. We have 2 local warm-up speakers and a main speaker from Southern California sharing their E, S & H. It is day filled with a beautiful ocean view, great food, fellowship and recovery.

We started a district-sponsored monthly Open Al-Anon Speaker & Birthday meeting in January. We had 2 speakers, birthday cake and Al-Anon birthday chips. It was very well attended.

We had 5 people who said it was their first Al-Anon meeting they ever went to, a great public outreach opportunity! We got positive feedback from both Al-Anon and AA members and look forward to the next celebration of recovery. A district dream for the last 10 years, it is finally a reality.

Our district used KBDM to purchase $1900.00 of liter-ature at bulk prices from WSO. We voted to have the district pay the shipping costs and sell the CAL to our AFG’s and individual members at the discounted price. We have already sold half the literature. We have a lot of small meetings – less than 10 members - that are benefiting from this decision.

Grateful to be of service, Mary M./ DR

We have been busy getting started with what looks like a great year.

We had a pizza party and fund-raiser towards our Al-Anon participation in the Santa Barbara AA Convention Jan. 30th. We had speakers on gratitude, a bake sale, and a sing along. The well attended even gave us a good start to our goals for this year’s convention. The date is Oct. 21-23 at the Elks Club in Goleta for those of you considering attending.

Sat. May 21st we will be having a workshop on Conflict Resolution. Anyone who has already hosted this topic and has information, we would love you to share.

We have had some challenges in Alateen meeting attend-ance, but are having great luck for the meetings we have within area high schools and continue to add high schools with the option.

Our monthly speaker meeting the 2nd Saturday has gained in popularity. Come see us if you are in the area Sat. night at 7 PM.

We are discussing a public outreach district supported meeting with childcare and have found a supportive and well-appointed venue. I would also like any experience strength and hope from areas with such meetings.

The Antelope Valley Con-vention Committee held a speaker dinner fundraiser and raised a lot of needed money. The convention is coming up on March 5th at the Holiday Inn in Palmdale. The DR is planning a trip to the South West Regional Delegates Meeting in March in La Jolla. The next district meeting will be a "love gift" making event in Lancaster. I hope we are all crafty.

We are still in need of some committee chairpersons, we recently had our Alateen coordinator resign but someone stepped up to the plate and volunteered as that is what this program is all about.

Our H&I person has been hard at work. We will be having our Annual Heart Talk luncheon speaker meeting this next Saturday February 27, 2016. We have some great speakers.

I am looking forward to 2016 in hopes that I will do a better job as District 10 Representative.

Hi everyone, Wow this is going to be printed in February of my 3rd year as DR. It's funny how it seem so daunting at first and now I'm nearing the end! Crazy! I've learned a lot. First, how important the service manual is. Sec-ond, to remember I'm doing my best! At first I re-ceived many opinions. I now invite people to be part of the process to help make the changes they are sug-gesting. I've also gotten closer to the literature as well as the steps, traditions, and concepts. Plus, there are amazing people who have loved me and supported me from day 1. I'm so grateful for my Al-Anon fami-ly :)

I've visited many meetings and I realize how we are all the same! I'm going to SWRDM next week. I'm looking forward to seeing what exactly it entails. Most of all I've learned I don't have to be perfect and it's all going to work out! Thank you for the opportunity to be of service,

ALATEEN UPDATE: Our Alateen meetings continue to run strong and we continue to reach out to Al-Anons about becoming AMIASs. Unfortunately, the Alateens were not able to officially be a part of the annual San Fernando Val-ley AA Convention with Al-Anon and Alateen participation this past January due to the submission of incomplete event plan. The district hopes to reach out to the new Alateen convention committee this year to provide sup-port wherever we can. In the absence of our current District Representative, Marley K. and her Alternate, Kristen, I was asked to help out as Alternate and Acting District Representative. Ironi-cally, my Higher Power had a message for me, in this ser-vice, which came as a surprise.

District 21 has always been a huge supporter of Alateen meetings and activities, and three of our past DR’s, includ-ing myself, are current or “retired” Alateen sponsors. In processing the changes to Alateen sponsorship and Alateen participation in events, we have been involved in workshops and other methods of supporting the Area guidelines. One of our members expressed concern and confusion about some of the policies currently in use. So as a District, we discussed these concerns. Our group rep-

resentatives listened carefully to the discussion and made it clear that they did not feel they had enough information to discuss the topic. They asked us to cre-ate an Ad Hoc committee or Thought Force to give them more information. In reviewing the May 2013 motion, some questions came up which we will discuss as a District. So we will practice using KBDM, the 12 Concepts of Service and any other useful tools to better educate our GR’s at our March 15th district meeting. Our new District Alateen Liaison will get quite an indoctrination working with our past DAL, past DR and myself!

Our district has also made progress in our outreach efforts to schools. We have a contact that is reviewing literature that will be placed, hopefully, in parent cen-ters in some LAUSD schools in the Northeast Valley. Our district approved a $250 initial budget for the ini-tial contact and a committee was formed to follow-up.

We are also sending two of our active service mem-bers to the April H&I Conference. The Al-Anon pro-gram, as well as the AA program, will be a source of inspiration and education for these members and we look forward to hearing their report back from the conference. Our inspired group is very willing to be of service when they have a task; the Twelfth Step is very much alive in District 21!

From March to April D27 had 13 Jr Billboards put up across our District. This Public Outreach Campaign took a good 2 years in the making-The creation (Sacha S ADR) & voting of the design, approval by WSO & finding a Bill-board Co willing to work within our budget. We say all in GOD’S time, right? Look for this project again next year-when we intend to ask all members of D27 to participate & submit their designs so it can be more inclusive.

We just finished having our Al-Anon Booth-in order to carry the message of hope for those who are still suffer-ing-at the LA Times Festival of Books over at USC SAT & SUN April 9-10. A big shout out to the LA AIS (Natalie T & Adria R) who brought our CAL books to sell to the attendees who came out even though there was a bit of rain on SAT. New this year was card readers for credit card purchases. Of course we had plenty of free pam-phlets, bookmarks, candy (Claire W from WSO sugges-tion) & 2016 AFAs on hand. Thank you to our Volunteer Coordinator Kristine K, Milton G & our 20 Volunteers. In my humble opinion, the fellowship at this event has to be the best I've yet to experience. Greetings from District 33! The "Giggle All The Way To Serenity" committee wants to thank you for your love and support. Members loved the fun workshop and the great Al-Anon, Alateen and AA speakers. Attendees enjoyed the program related games using “Groups At Work” and other tools of the program. The room was filled with many laughs.

Our focus is to continue to carry the message not just for the newcomers, but for ourselves as well. We have or-dered “Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism 2016“, to reach out to those who are affected by someone else’s drinking. They will be distributed at our district meeting to our Service Board, and the Service Board will take them back to your

meeting group.

Institutions consistently is taking panels to Aurora Hospital in Covina, with the cooperation of Al-Anon and AA members. Also Public Outreach participated in a Health fair and arranged to run Al-Anon public ser-vice announcements on a radio station.

Alateens in our area, are a great example of how the Alateen program helps the families of Alcoholics. This past year several of our Alateens volunteered as speakers at our district workshop, as well as area meetings. Alateens a big THANK YOU for your wiliness to be of service.

Our Alateens from Tuesday night in West Covina just celebrated their Anniversary with an open meeting and had a SCAC bake sale so they can pay their own half of scholarship to SCAC. Also, starting January 2016, each meeting is encouraged to start passing a donation can for the 2016 Southern California Alateen Conference (SCAC). Donations will provide half of scholarship for Alateens wanting to attend the 2016 SCAC. We still are in need of Alateen male sponsors. We had a Re-certification Alateen Members Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS) workshop on Saturday February 13, 2016 in Glendora CA. With an excellent presentation on how to fill out an Alateen event form, our enthusiastic AMIASs have questions that were clarified and let me tell you everyone in our area is on board with Alateen safety guidelines.

Also please mark your calendars, our annual Alathon fundraiser will be on Saturday, June 18, 2016 . Our theme is “Celebrate with Gratitude” come join us for some fun recovery time.

I am so happy to have shared one more year in ser-vice, recovery and laughter with ya'll, and let’s make 2016 another amazing year! If you are thinking about being of service, there are always plenty of opportuni-ties. My email is: [email protected]

Visit our website www.al-anonesgv.org for future workshops and news information.

Thank you for allowing me to be of service. Maria M., DR

Fundraisers: In December, we had our “Holiday Potluck” fundraiser for the Colton Service Center. We will be sending a check to them from this fundraiser in the neighborhood of about $635.00. The main speaker was our own Robin B.

Our district is already hard at work on our 2016 fundrais-er-the Garden of Hope. This celebration will take place Saturday August the 13th at the River Christian Reformed Church in Redlands. All event positions have been filled with many new and exciting ideas being considered.

Every month I assign a topic for a GR to present to our entire group. I call it “Expanding the District Knowledge Base.” The January topic was Results of the Al-Anon Sur-vey last year (August 2015 Forum). The February topic was Dealing with Difficult Members. For March the topic is Anonymity (December 2015 Forum). I am hopeful that some of this information works its way back to the indi-vidual groups and stimulates discussion.

Our district decided to purchase Al-Anon Faces Alcohol-ism pamphlets for distribution throughout the communi-ty (200 English, 100 Spanish).

We are also planning our first district workshop in years. It will be a writing workshop complete with stamped en-velopes to send the final products to several different Al-Anon publications asking for personal stories of recov-ery.After one full year as a group I can see the growth

and comfort level of our GRs. Each is eager to do his/her part within the district.

I was just voted in as the District Rep for District 40 on February 11, 2016.

We are working on our Spring Fling which will be Sat-urday, April 9, 2016. The theme is “Let Go & Let God.” We have speakers lined up and we are busy putting together raffle baskets. The location is the Lamb’s Fellowship Church in Lake Elsinore, CA.

We are planning to celebrate Al-Anon’s 65th birthday at the Spring Fling as well.

We have the following positions open at the District level, Secretary, Alateen Liaison, Public Outreach as well as email outreach. Service to Al-Anon is the rent I pay for living today.

As my sponsor would say to me, “If we only gave back to Al-Anon in Service, just 10% of the focus and atten-tion we gave the alcoholic, we would all be in good standing”.

My report for District 45 is short. District 45 has many groups and is a very large district with low participation. We are reaching out to all groups who have a GR listed but not attending district meetings to attend the meetings and participate. We are reaching out to the many meetings who do not have a GR and encouraging them to have a volunteer to be the GR and participate. District 45 also has only two Alateen meetings in the dis-trict and we are reaching out to other Alateens, Al-Anons, AAs and other places such as schools to spread the word about Alateen. District 45 always receives a lot of financial support and donations for SCAC. We usually pay for several scholarships for the Alateens and pay a portion of the bus and donate some to the general fund. We had money left over from last year which will be used for SCAC this year. Public Outreach ordered 500 copies of the 2016 Al Anon Faces Alcoholism in English and in Spanish. GRs and the DR are distributing these at other meetings and locations in the community like hospitals and libraries. District 45 has meetings six times a year on the first Wednesday of every other odd month at 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Westchester. We meet in January, March, May, July, Sep-tember, and November. Please spread the word to any-one who would like to be involved in World Service Dis-trict 45. Thank you.

Our district continues in our public efforts to distribute copies of Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism as outreach to librar-ies, schools, churches and many other community ser-vices.

Our District 48 GRs and groups that are in the geograph-

Our District made donations four times a year at the branches of service.

Hello Everyone. District 51 has some good news and some bad news. We closed a meeting. We tried to save this meeting, but God is in charge and the writing on the wall was clear. However, we did open a new meeting in Santa Fe Springs. It seems to have strong start. We are grateful.

We are still researching into opening up an Alateen meeting, but are not sure of a good location within our district boundaries. We would prefer to attach this meeting with an existing Al-Anon meeting, but have still not decided which meeting would best suit our needs.

We are currently planning our next alathon, set for October. So far our committee is small, but the group is hard-working and feel confident that it can create something great for our event.

Earlier this year, our District paid for any Group Rep that wanted to attend the SOS in Glendale. Only 3 GRs took us up on the offer, but the result was great. Our next district meeting was packed with great discus-sion about what we learned at the SOS. We hope to make this a tradition, provided we have the funds.

We have 1 new AMIAS and continue to encourage more. Thanks for the service.

During our meeting we also made gifts for our Delegate, Elizabeth K., to distribute at the upcom-ing World Service Conference. There’s also an exciting and dedicated committee planning our 6th Annual Dis-trict 60 Workshop “Conflict Resolution and Sponsor-ship” which will be held on Saturday, March 6. I will tell you all the wonderful results in the next Bulletin. I’m hoping to spend some time at our District meetings studying our Service Manual and the Con-cepts, including a time for questions and discussion. My theme for the group for the next three years is “Let’s have fun!” My goal is to have fun at our District meetings as well as helping the GRs become a valua-ble tool for their groups by familiarizing themselves with the Service Manual and Al-Anon literature, as it’s an important tool in our recovery. 2015/2016 budgets: 2015 year-end financials were not discussed at January district meeting because treasurer was unable to attend. 2016 budget will be discussed and approved at April 2016 meeting. Dis-trict will use 2015 budget as guide for operations until 2016 budget is approved. Treasurer will continue to track income and expenses and reimburse receipts for expenses.

Public Outreach Project: 150 copies of the WSO-approved poster were produced for $230 and given to district GRs to distribute to group members. There is interest in making the poster available to other Area districts; District will follow up this idea with Area Co-ordinator. CAL literature is being delivered to teachers and counselors associated with school districts in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, and Tustin. A new ADR is being sought to oversee Public Outreach.

Alateen: District hosted AMIAS Recertification work-shop on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Mesa Verde United Methodist Church, 1701 Baker St., Costa Mesa,

District 57 will be holding our Annual Alathon on Satur-day February 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Lakewood at Mayfair Park. The theme is the “Discovering Choices” Diner where several appetizing topics will be served up such as Changed Attitudes with a Helping of Humility, Acceptance with a side of Happiness, Perspective loaded with Compassion, and Willingness accompanied by En-thusiasm. We hope to see you there!

Our district continues in our Public Outreach efforts, providing speakers on a regular basis to recovery centers in our area. We have added a new recovery center through the Salvation Army where our members will par-ticipate as speakers in sharing their experience, strength, and hope to families affected by the disease of alcohol-ism.

Our Beginner’s meetings are continuing with members co-leading the six week series. Many newcomers contin-ue attending other Al-Anon meetings and share with co-leaders that they see how helpful the Beginner meeting series was to them.

We are also beginning to plan our 3rd Conflict Resolution Workshop which we plan to hold in June. More infor-mation will be coming out when a date and details are finalized.

Just started as DR this year and we had our first District meeting in February! Whew, glad that’s over. Still need to practice that “progress, not perfection” thing. We got off to a great start with every service position in the Dis-trict filled by members willing to be of service. As DR, I plan on visiting the meetings in our District, particularly those that have no GR representation. I have great sup-port from members who will be joining me and they re-mind me that, in this program, we don’t do anything alone. We also discussed where to go on the SCWS web-site to register as a GR and AGR. It’s very important as a GR to be in contact with SCWS regarding current activi-ties in Al-Anon. We have an item on the Agenda where we discuss group problems. We had great participation from all, as well as GRs providing solutions to those prob-lems. We had a discussion about reaching out through the media to bring the message of Al-Anon to those affected by someone’s drinking. This service is allowing me the opportunity to read literature I have never read, specifically a “How to do it, Service Tool for Public Out-reach Activities” which I downloaded from the members

Thank you to all our members for all your continued support. This year is the final year of your current officers and I encourage our district members to start thinking about stepping up their service. With all of your support in the past year, we were able to send our excess funds of over $5,200 to our service arms, and continue to support them, as suggested in our service manual.

This year we are planning a writing workshop in April, another "Together We Can Make it" Service workshop in May, as well as many more. We are continuing to hold Panel Meetings in meetings that are inviting us in. All panels discuss a tradition or concept. We are also discussing ideas about how to continue to carry the message, and public outreach, with ads on buses, billboards and posters being considered as well as other less expensive options, all keeping within our budget.

We have also been working on insuring that all meeting have a CMA (Current Mailing Address) email for every group. We have only 6 meetings with no email out of the 83 registered meeting in our district. If you happen to be one of the 6 groups with no email, please contact me, and I can help you with this, and explain it.

Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to be of service, to learn and grow so much.

AFG Convention Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s already February 21st and the 40th Annual Southern California Al-Anon Fami-ly Groups Convention is just around the corner. We have a fun filled weekend planned for April 1st, 2nd and 3rd:

Fantastic speakers at our Saturday luncheon, Saturday evening banquet and Sunday breakfast and the food is not shabby either! I tasted it; and the vegetarian stuff is surprisingly good!

We also have planned meetings including marathon meetings in three different languages (English, Spanish and Alcoholic).

We have a boutique and hospitality rooms to explore and meet up with friends and/or make new friends. If you want to make donations or be of service at the boutique, contact Eric (see back of registration form for number). To make donations or be of service at the hospitality room, contact Frankie (See back of registra-tion form for number).

We have raffles, so if you feel lucky and wish to but tickets in advance or would like to donate a basket and/or be of service, contact Angie (see back of regis-tration form for number).

We also have our ways and means committee; you see them set up in the lobby. To be of service with this committee, contact Jim (see back of registration form for number).

Did I tell you that the time allotted for the discounted preregistration and the discounted package including registration, luncheon, banquet and breakfast is quickly coming to an end? To take advantage of these deals go to www.afgconvention.org and either register online or download an AFG registration form and send it snail mail. You can also get to our webpage by going to the SCWS website, or either LA and Orange County Central Offices.

So come and celebrate your recovery at the 2016-AFG Convention and remember: “Just for Today, I will enjoy Life”.

Suggested Al-Anon Preamble to the Twelve Steps

The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of rela-tives and friends of alcoholics who share their experi-ence, strength, and hope in order to solve their com-mon problems. We believe alcoholism is a family ill-ness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, po-litical entity, organization, or institution; does not en-gage in any controversy; neither endorses nor oppos-es any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary con-tributions. Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alco-holics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcohol-ics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

have also contracted an Al-Anon member as our new bookkeeper, Lynn T. We are very grateful for the contin-ued support of the many volunteers who fill book orders, stock the shelves, and most importantly, take twelfth step calls.

Unfortunately, Dodi was recently hospitalized with a sud-den illness but she is now recovering at her home. We hope to have her back at her desk in April. In the mean-time, our new chair, Natalie T., who was installed last month, is helping at the office and making sure we have adequate volunteers to meet our needs.

We were able to add $10,000 to our prudent reserve this past year.

Additional motions passed by the 2015 service board in-cluded adding signage to our front window stating office contact information, obtaining a fictitious business name, “Al-Anon Family Groups of Greater Los Angeles”, and creating a thought-force to update our website, making it more user-friendly as well as mobile-friendly, which we expect to be completed this year. Why do I still go to those meetings?

Sometimes, I am asked why I still go to “those meetings.” Yes, I have been in Al-Anon for a very long time, but my reply is simple. I came to Al-Anon because of alcoholism, but I stayed because of my life. I was overwhelmed with the effects of living with an alcoholic and all the problems associ-ated with trying to raise five children. Al-Anon became my lifeline. I think the greatest motivation for me then was that my chil-dren deserved one sane parent and it looked like it was going to be me—if our family were to have any chance. I worked hard to become a better parent, and we all began to recover. It helped that three of my children went to Alateen. When I became stronger, and it looked like things were not

going to improve in our household, my husband and I separat-ed and later were divorced. Tough as things were trying to cope with raising five angry kids on my own, we not only sur-vived, but we thrived. Sometime later, I married a wonderful man who also hap-pened to be a member of Al-Anon. We were all very happy. The children loved him; they grew up and became fine young adults, and all went relatively well for quite a few years. How-ever, my husband became ill and was eventually wheelchair bound. It was such a great gift that we both had a program to live by and we kept that in mind. So often, when things were really difficult, we would use the slogans to guide us and en-courage us. The little bookmark Just for Today (M-10) was also so helpful; we often quoted, “I can do something for 12 hours that would appall me if I felt I had to keep it up for a lifetime.” My husband required care around the clock, and I had not been able to attend meetings. Friends in the program would occasionally come to our home and hold a meeting for us, and these meetings were a Godsend. Eventually my husband died, and I was faced with yet another challenge: how to go on with my life. It was a brand new expe-rience to have no one to care for except myself—and it was scary! One of the first things I did was to go back to my Al-Anon meetings. It was as if they were waiting for me! This brings me to the question I mentioned at the beginning: Why do I still go to those meetings? The biggest reason is that I’m still alive and I never want to forget all the lessons I’ve learned in the program. It is truly a program for living. Also, once in a while I hear a real gem that is shared that stays with me, and I don’t want to miss those little pearls of wisdom. Last but not least, what would happen if there were no one to greet the newcomer who is hurting, needs encouragement, and someone to say, “You’re in the right place”? I’ll never for-get the feeling when I was a newcomer and a member sat me down, put her arm around my shoulder, and brought me a cup of coffee. Someone was there for me. Can I do less?
