We will stop for lunch in the middle of the tour at Tsion Café; price of lunch not included.

Tour ends at Hamilton Grange National Memorial. It is located in Saint Nicholas Park in Manhattan. The street address is 414 West 141st Street, and it sits between Convent Avenue and St. Nicholas Avenue.

This tour tells Hamilton’s story through an intimate look into the life of the man himself, and the incredible work he achieved in his brief lifetime.

We will visit Morris-Jumel Mansion, uncovering the wealth of history the house has to offer, and explore the early years of Hamilton’s life, from his childhood in the West Indies to the Battle of Harlem Heights.

From the mansion we will walk from Washington Heights to Hamilton Heights, discovering the Sugar Hill section and examining the neighborhood during Hamilton’s time, and today.

The tour will visit Hamilton Grange, the only home Alexander Hamilton ever owned. Here we will discuss Hamilton’s tireless work after the war, his bitter battles with the other founders and the many victories he achieved as well as the groundswell of events leading up to the fateful “Interview in Weehawken.”

Our tour guide, Jimmy Napoli, has been a licensed N.Y.C. tour guide since 1996, specializing in the American Revolution. His main area of interest and expertise is Alexander Hamilton. In 2007, Jimmy appeared in the PBS documentary “The American Experience: Alexander Hamilton.”

Altman’s, Sak’s, Bergdorf’s and Then Some - A History of Elite Shopping on Fifth Avenue Walking Tour

Wednesday, July 6, 10:00 am – 12:00 pmRSVP by June 22 to [email protected] $25pp; Meet at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue in front of the old B. Altman’s Department Store, main entry, midblock at 9:50 am

Tour ends at Bergdorf Goodman, 58th St. & 5th Ave.

Tour goes rain or shine.

Join us for this colorful tour of Fifth Avenue retail palaces, endearing themselves to the Ladies of Fashion while displacing them from what was initially New York’s most exclusive and expensive residential real estate. We will enjoy the architectural details of these and other sumptuous Fifth Avenue buildings while learning about the quirkiness, genius and motivation that fueled the ambitions of their creators and propelled New York to become fashion capital of the world.

Our tour guide, Deborah Zelcer, enjoys illuminating the social, political, technological and economic contexts, which have shaped cities throughout history. She credits studies with esteemed architectural historian Reyner Banham for igniting her passion to interpret the built environment. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, she worked for architectural/urban design specialists RTKL and Associates, Landscape Architects Innocenti and Webel, and residential design firms. A stint in the Moth Storytelling Workshop coupled with involvement in Jane’s Walk revealed to her the joy of entertaining audiences with tales of urban evolution.

Film - Unzipped

Monday, July 11, 10:00 amFilm to be shown at the home of Marsha HenryRSVP by July 8 to [email protected] Mizrahi, one of the most successful designers in high fashion, plans his fall 1994 collection. He combines inspirations such as the Hollywood Eskimo look, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Ouija-derived advice like "dominatrix mixed with Hitchcock" into a well-received collection. This film offers behind-the-scenes look at the creative side of fashion.

Using a variety of cinematographic techniques, the world of high-profile fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi is portrayed as being driven by excitement and creativity, despite the concomitant chaos and cacophony. Mizrahi's frenzied genius and rollercoaster emotions paint a humorous and personal portrait of a brilliant designer. Famous "Super Models," actors, and actresses populate Isaac’s rarified world, but Douglas Keeve's cameras capture the stress and turbulence beneath the placid coolness of glamour.

ART GALLERY TOUR - Join a Curatorial Fellow on an insightful tour of cutting-edge contemporary artwork in Glyndor Gallery and the Sunroom Project Space. On this tour we will see the current exhibit on view at the time, “Nature Pops!” A half-century after the emergence of Pop art as a revolutionary response to new norms of consumerism, “Nature Pops!” brings together work by artists who recalibrate this movement in contemporary terms. Continuing to reevaluate popular culture, particularly the increasing mediation of our experience by technology, artists question whether we can still have an authentic experience―even in the natural world. Artists include: Polly Apfelbaum, Roberley Bell, Justin Berry, JoAnne Carson, Kira Nam Greene, Laurie Hogin, Vandana Jain, Portia Munson, Emilio Perez, Amy Pryor and Shinique Smith.

10:30 am - Arrive in Philly for an hour-guided tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary, plus time to roam the onsite art exhibits.

Eastern State Penitentiary is a Gothic former prison founded in 1829 on the Quaker-inspired belief that solitary confinement could reform criminals. It was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. It’s vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone. The Alfred Fleisher Memorial Synagogue is tucked into a narrow alleyway off Cellblock 7. It was restored in 2008 and opened to the public. For more information visit www.easternstate.org.

12:00 pm - Lunch in Philly

2:00 pm - Continue on to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where we will embark on a 2 hour-guided tour by van of the Philadelphia Mural Program.

See the world’s largest collection of outdoor public art during an official Mural Arts Program tour. All tours include details about the murals, the artistic process, the artists, and the history of the diverse communities that serve as the backdrop for this unique art form. Our tour will focus on Immigration and Jewish landmarks. Learn about early immigration in Philadelphia and the tales of various ethnic groups who made the city their home. Along the way, view landmarks in Jewish history and experience a surprise stop at one of the nation’s oldest – and still functioning – orthodox Jewish synagogues.

Mural Arts was first established in 1984 as part of the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network’s effort to eradicate the city’s graffiti crisis. Artist Jane Golden was hired to reach out to graffiti writers and redirect their energies to constructive public art projects. In addition to addressing the problem of graffiti, Mural Arts’ collective mural-making processes proved to be a powerful tool for generating dialogue, building relationships, empowering communities, and sparking economic revitalization. In 1996, the Anti-Graffiti Network was reorganized and the Mural Arts Program became its own entity. Soon after, the nonprofit Philadelphia Mural Arts Advocates was established to raise additional funds for the program, making Mural Arts a unique public/private partnership.

The organization targets every neighborhood in Philadelphia, each year enrolling 2,000 individuals in its three programmatic initiatives and directly engaging an additional 18,000 people in its projects. The programmatic initiatives include Art Education for youth; Restorative Justice for inmates, those re-entering society, and victims of violence; and Porch Light for those struggling with mental illness, trauma, and addiction. Each of these initiatives generates projects with themes and processes relevant to their target constituencies. Mural Arts also has a Community Murals department, which focuses on creating projects in collaboration with community groups and organizations; and a Special Projects department which produces large-scale artworks meant to push the boundaries of public art.
