The Lassa fever outbreak has affected over eight states including Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Niger, Kano and Oyo. Despite the recent outbreak, Lassa fever is not new in this part of the world. It was first discovered in the 1950s,however, the virus causing Lassa fever was not identified until 1969 by Christian health workers in Lassa town in present Borno State of Nigeria from where the disease derives its name. It is endemic in West Africa and subsequent outbreaks have occurred in Nigeria, Liberia, and Sierra Leone since it was first discovered.
