President’s LetterDear Friends,

Thank you for being part of the Boys & Girls Club family! Together, we made great things happen for the kids in our community in 2016. We can’t thank you enough for caring about the kids and getting involved.

This year, our organization had some big successes thanks to you. We opened two brand new buildings at our Kingston Technology Family Campus at Golden West College. Our organization was named #1 in the nation for arts programming by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Our comprehensive marketing strategy was also named #1 in the nation by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. But, much more important than winning awards or having grand opening celebrations, we made a positive change in the lives of 10,000 children.

At the Boys & Girls Club, our goal is to help every child that comes through our doors fulfill their potential. Since every child is unique, with different interests and abilities, we try to reach kids from as many angles as possible so that they can get help where they need it and find activities that they are enthusiastic about and excited to be part of.

Our core programs focus on: • Education Career Development• Sports, Fitness, and Recreation• Character and Leadership Development• Arts• Health and Life Skills• Licensed Preschools

As you read through this report, you’ll see how your support helped kids in each of these areas. Your investment in the Boys & Girls Club is an investment in our community’s kids. And there is a big return on that investment. With your help, kids are doing better in school so that they are on the path to a great future. Kids that would otherwise go hungry are getting enough to eat thanks to meal programs that you’ve supported. Because you invested in our scholarship program, families are breaking the cycle of poverty and staying off of welfare.

From our preschoolers, our teens, and all the kids in between, we thank you for believing in the Boys & Girls Club and all the kids that come through our doors each day. You are changing lives for the better!

Sincerely,

Mike Haynes President

Success in school is one of the keys to children’s great futures. That’s why the Club is so committed to helping kids reach their full academic potential. Every weekday, the Club provides homework help after school to hundreds of children. We also offer the award-winning Twilight Education Project, tutoring low-income English Language Learner children so they can get on even footing with their native English speaking peers. These programs make a big difference to kids who need academic support that they can’t always get at home. But, the Club offers a lot more than just homework help and tutoring!

In 2016, the Club stepped up its educational programming in a big way. We expanded successful programs and introduced several new programs. Our focus was on reading and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).

KidzLit: After several great summers where the kids at our Oak View Branch made dramatic improvements in their reading thanks to this creative and fun reading program, the Club expanded KidzLit to run throughout the school year and to include a second location - our Huntington Beach Branch.

DIY STEM: The Club was thrilled to be a pilot site for this new Boys & Girls Clubs of America education program. Our kids got to be first in the nation to test out a new hands-on curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The kids had fun with the new program’s experiments and gave feedback to help improve the program before it rolls out nationwide.

Snap Circuits: Kids learned about electrical engineering by creating their own electrical circuits. With hands-on projects, kids began to understand how everyday objects work, like lights, fans, doorbells, and more.

BitsBox: Kids in our computer labs learned to code their own apps with BitsBox. Kids made their own games in a kid-friendly coding platform. The kids had a great time while they developed real-world tech skills!

Meet the Masters: This new arts program teaches kids about the great artists and gives them the chance to create their own masterpieces. At a time when public school arts programs are extremely limited, the Club gives kids the chance to learn about the arts and express themselves.

CEO Tanya Hoxsie comments, “Our goal is to help kids reach their full potential. Every child is different. That means we have to try a lot of different ways to make a difference to them. Some kids might need extra help with their homework or tutoring in order to get on grade level with their school work. Other kids might be bored at school because it’s too easy or because their teachers can’t do hands-on activities in the classroom like we can at the Club. By offering many different kinds of education programs that are engaging, hands-on, and fun, we help all the kids who need us, in the ways that they need us. Our programs get kids excited about learning. That makes a difference not just today, but for their whole lifetime.”

In the Club’s basketball and arena soccer leagues, more than 1,000 children each year learn the fundamentals of the game while building character and finding new ways to live up to their potential. The Club’s sports leagues are offered year-round. On our co-ed teams, kids as young as 3 years old and as old as 16 all have a chance to learn the game, grow their skills, and grow as individuals because of their experiences in the Club’s sports teams.

Unit Director Sem Ibrahim talks about one player who has grown a lot in his two years playing in the Club’s sports leagues. “Dexter is one of the brightest kids that I know. He started in our K-League when he was five years old and now a couple of years later, he’s playing in our Division I league. He has grown not only in his athletic skills, but socially as well. He has transformed himself from a shy child into a very confident player who is a leader to his team. At each game, he is sure to interact with every single kid both on his team and on the opposing team. He is also a very disciplined young person and that encourages the other kids on the team to work

hard, too. This season, his team is in first place, and I think that has a lot to do with Dexter’s determination, hard work, and leadership.”

The Club’s sports leagues offer a chance for every child to improve and excel. Our leagues get kids active and help them learn healthy habits by making exercise part of their regular routine. As they play, kids build coordination, learn the rules of the game, and develop good ball handling skills. But they do a lot more than that, too. Kids learn important life skills that will help them at school, in their careers, and in their relationships. They learn how to work together as a team, supporting each other through wins and losses, learning to be good sports, good friends, and good teammates. They learn that you only get better at something when you practice and work hard. They learn what it’s like to have other people counting on them to do their part and they try to rise to the challenge. Those important life skills go a long way toward helping kids grow up to fulfill their potential as the friends, neighbors, and colleagues we hope to have in our community when they are adults.

While the Club might be better known for its sports or academic programs, our goal is to help children fulfill their potential and succeed in all areas of life. That starts with good character. That’s why teaching kids good character is incorporated into every activity, every day at the Club.

One way we do that is giving kids the chance to plan and carry out service projects throughout the year, like our annual project called “Operation Gratitude.” Through Operation Gratitude, kids from preschoolers to teens shared their Halloween candy, donating it to make care packages for military men and women serving overseas. The kids made a small self-sacrifice to do something special for people who are making much bigger sacrifices every day. The kids hoped to bring the troops smiles with sweet treats and letters thanking the troops for their service.

One of the Club’s weekly programs, Smart Girls, gives pre-teen girls a chance to give back to the community through service projects. And,

it also teaches kids about friendship, feelings, healthy body image, and more. Part of good character is feeling confident and good about yourself, but many young girls have low self-esteem. The Smart Girls program is designed to help kids love what’s unique about themselves and then see how they can fulfill their potential and make a difference in their own special way. One of the girls in the program writes, “I’m weird, but that’s OK. I’m special because I am who I am and I’m not trying to be the same as somebody else.” Character development programs at the Club help all the kids at the Club see the good in themselves and others.

From a “Kindness Assembly” asking kids how they can help their community to prizes given to kids for being caught in the act of doing something good, the Club finds unique ways to draw children’s attention to the idea that it’s what’s inside that matters and that every person, no matter how small, can make a big difference.

In 2016, Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley’s arts programs were named #1 in the nation by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Since our Club was chosen from a field of more than 4,000 clubs nationwide, this is a very prestigious honor!

Through our ClubHouse Academy performing arts and fitness center, our organization offers more than 90 dance, theatre, music, gymnastics, and martial arts classes every single week. That gives kids of all ages and abilities a chance to do what they love and find a class that’s just right for them.

Teen member Amanda Hay has been active in the Club’s theatre and dance programs for several years. She took her first dance class at the Club, with no previous dance experience. Now, she not only dances at ClubHouse Academy, but also in her high school’s competitive dance team and at ballet conservatories in our

area. And, she’s won a national scholarship to pursue her performing arts education from the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation. Amanda comments, “I now have the tools that I need to continue rapid improvement, which will get me to the level that I need to be at in order to fulfill my dream of becoming a professional ballerina. ClubHouse Academy gave me the foundation I needed for intense programs that are preparing me to study dance in college and pursue dance as a career.”

ClubHouse Academy has something to offer every child, from toddlers boisterously testing out their first tap shoes to teens on track to be professional performers like ClubHouse alumni Tara Barr, who currently stars in Hulu’s Golden Globe nominated “Casual,” and Kyle Selig, who has performed in national Broadway tours. At every level, ClubHouse Academy gives kids opportunities to discover a love for the arts and pursue their interests to their fullest potential.

Childhood hunger continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing kids in our community. One in four children in Orange County is living in “food insecurity.” That means that they don’t know where their next meal is coming from. At our Clubs, that number is even higher than one in four, because 75% of the families that we serve are low- to moderate-income families.

This year, the Club provided more than 30,000 free meals to the most at-risk children we serve – the kids in our Oak View Branch and Twilight Education Project. For many, their cupboards are bare and refrigerators are empty at home. But, they know they can count on getting a good, filling, and healthy meal when they are at the Club. On top of that, each week, through a partnership with Surf City Rotary Club of Huntington Beach, the Club sent about 75 families in our Twilight Education Project home with backpacks full of food for the weekend. That helped make sure kids could have a good breakfast and lunch on the days that they aren’t at school or the Boys & Girls Club.

Thanks to a donation from the Woman’s Club of Huntington Beach, our Huntington Beach Branch served more than 31,000 free healthy snacks to the kids at the Club in 2016. Our other school age branches also ran “Healthy Habits,” a cooking and nutrition program that reached 50 kids per day at each site. Through Healthy Habits, kids learned cooking basics and got to eat the snacks they prepared each day. Poverty is not as extreme

at our Huntington Beach, Pacific Life Foundation and Kingston Branches as it is at our Oak View Branch and at our Twilight Education Project. But, at these locations we work with many families who are the “working poor.” They don’t qualify for government programs like WIC or food stamps, but they don’t earn enough money to make ends meet. That means that fighting hunger and giving kids healthy foods is still one of our biggest concerns.

Unit Director Tim Nolan comments, “There are a whole lot of parents who don’t have that discretionary income, or really, necessary income, to send a healthy after school snack with their kids every day. Fresh fruits and vegetables are expensive, and we know that since many families can’t afford them, the kids just aren’t eating them. That’s why this year, we designed our snack program to be 100% fruits and vegetables. The kids loved it! A lot of the kids had never had some of the vegetables before. Some days, there might have been a little ranch dressing to help make the vegetables go down a little easier for the kids who were intimidated by new veggies they’d never seen before. But they tried new things and they got healthy food every single day. There are kids who are literally waiting in line for snack time every day. It’s made a dramatic difference for them. That’s both because they are hungry and because they have developed a taste for healthy food and they actually want to eat their fruits and vegetables. I think that’s a big win on two fronts – making sure kids don’t go hungry and helping them be healthy.”

Helping kids reach their full potential through…

Preschool ProgramsThe Club starts helping kids on the path to success from the earliest ages. As young as six weeks, in fact! The Club has two licensed preschools: the Robert Mayer Child Development Preschool at Golden West College in Huntington Beach and the Learning Center Child Development Preschool in Fountain Valley, right next door to our ClubHouse Academy, the library, and City Hall. Each of our preschools works with infants as young as six weeks old, toddlers, preschoolers, and transitional kindergarteners.

Our programs meet rigorous quality standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and by the STAR Quality Rating System. That means that we are committed to giving the kids in our programs the very best. They have curriculum designed to meet their own individual needs and interests. And, they have consistent high quality care that makes them feel loved, safe, and ready to explore their world.

A mom whose child was in our preschool for two years wrote the Club a letter about her experience. Her family benefited from the scholarship program that your support helped provide, so her thanks are not just for the Learning Center, but for you, too.

“I want to thank you for the love and care you have given Romeo while at the Learning Center. His excitement and love for the program shows on his face when I pick him up at the end of the day. With your care, he has grown into a wonderful young man and he is ready to move on to Kindergarten.

He has made such wonderful friends and has developed meaningful relationships with the teachers at the Learning Center. I am so blessed by the generous donations that allowed Romeo to attend such a wonderful program. My son will benefit from his experiences at the Learning Center for a lifetime. It would not have been possible without your help.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the teachers for their time and caring attention they have given to Romeo. He has made leaps and bounds and is definitely not the shy little guy l left in your care and attention at only 3 years old. Again, many thanks to you and the program!”

Without your support of the scholarship program, kids like Romeo wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn and grow every day in a nationally accredited preschool. He’s prepared for success thanks to you!

For more than 10 years, the Boys & Girls Club dreamed of building California’s first Boys & Girls Club on a college campus. In 2016, that dream finally came true! The Club completed the Kingston Technology Family Campus, right on the campus of Golden West College, a community college in Huntington Beach. The new Family Campus has three buildings:

• Robert Mayer Child Development Preschool, which serves children as young as six weeks old up to six years old in transitional kindergarten.

• Pacific Life Foundation Branch School Age Center, providing educational and recreational programs for youth in grades K-12.

• Harry and Jaynne Boand Gymnasium, a collegiate sized gymnasium that houses the Club’s athletics and recreation programs for toddlers through teens.

The new Family Campus offers a continuum of care with programming for kids of all ages, from six week old infants to teens. After growing up on a college campus, they’ll feel right at home enrolling at Golden West College or any other

college! And, with all the support they get at the Boys & Girls Club, kids have the skills and resources they need to succeed in school and in life. By the time they graduate from high school, they’re ready to fulfill their potential and make their college dreams come true.

When asked what going to a Boys & Girls Club on a college campus means to them, the kids say:

“It makes me want to go to college.” – 7-year-old Club member“It helps me conquer my fears.” – 10-year-old Club member“I see things that I’ve never seen before.” – 11-year-old Club member

2017 will mark our first full year of operations at the new Club. As we move forward, we will continue to fundraise for operations and to pay off the $4.95 million mortgage on the new site.

Your support is still welcome and needed! If you would like to make a contribution to California’s 1st Boys & Girls Club on a college campus, call 714-309-4962 or visit bgchv.com/family/donate.php
