Every day in Tarrant County, girls face significant obstacles to their well-being and success – gender and racial discrimination, social barriers, and poverty. Girls Inc. of Tarrant County is a vital resource for programs, support, and tools for girls to overcome these obstacles and empower them to grow into successful students, leaders in the community, and healthy, educated, and independent adults.

This empowerment of Girls Inc. girls could not be achieved without YOU our Partners in Impact!

A few of the ways you as a Partner have impacted girls’ lives in 2016:

Girls saw themselves as part of the culture of college. Through the commitment of university Partners to STEM programs and shared resources, Girls Inc. girls now consider themselves honorary Horned Frogs, Rams, Lumberjacks, Mavericks, and TCC Trailblazers.

Girls Inc. girls increased their literacy skills because volunteer Partners dedicated time to listen to emerging readers.

Girls Inc. girls were impacted by the opportunity to apply for local scholarships. Donor Partners raised over $200,000 to provide scholarships that will enable girls to boost their post-secondary education from a dream to a reality.

Thank you, our donors and volunteers, for being a Partner in Impact, for your continued support, and delivering a generous investment in Girls Inc. girls. As we move forward in 2017, we are confident more girls will be inspired to reach their full potential and become the leaders of tomorrow.

HighlightsGirls participate in a variety of research-based programs ranging from prevention and academics, to leadership and community action. The programs are delivered during the school day and after school with special events on evenings and weekends. Some programs are comprehensive and take place over the course of the semester while others are one-time events. Girls Inc. programs provide girls with crucial skills and support to be healthy, educated, and independent. Hundreds of girls participate in summer programs aimed at ending summer learning loss.Through hands-on activities facilitated by trained mentors, girls try new things in a safe, pro-girl environment. Their families are also invited to get involved and become aware of the topics discussed in our programs.

Equal Earners, Savvy SpendersThis component of Girls Inc.’s economic literacy program addresses money management, investing, and global economics. Girls create “grown-up” budgets and think critically about making their dreams an attainable reality.

Growing Together promotes bonding and communication between girls and their parents/caring adults. Girls Inc. provides a safe platform for open and positive conversations in preparation for some of the changes the girls will experience.

Growing Together

“I am so grateful for Girls Inc. and the opportunities it provides for my family. My girls have grown so much since being a part of this organization and this program was so beneficial for all of us.” – North Fort Worth Parent

Page 7: 2016 ANNUAL REPORT - girlsinctarrant.orggirlsinctarrant.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/2016-Girls-Inc.-of... · lives in 2016: Girls saw themselves as part of the culture of college.

MEET ASMAMy name is Asma Hadi, and my family is from Yemen. Throughout my life, I have faced negative stereotypical judgments about my race and culture, but the one consistent place where I have been free to be myself is within the walls of Girls Inc. Here, I am accepted and loved for who I am as a girl in this world. At Girls Inc., I am not a stereotype. At Girls Inc. I am Asma: a girl who dreams like all the other girls in this world.

Yes, I wear a hijab, and yes, I look different than other girls, but on the inside my soul is colored Girls Inc. red just like all of my other Girls Inc. sisters. We are all in the Girls Inc. classroom looking for validation that we have the right to exist in this world. At Girls Inc., we feel like we matter. We are taken seriously. Girls Inc. is my safe place.

At first, I was intimidated by the other girls at Girls Inc. who were very different from me. Today, those girls are some of my best friends. I spent many years in a country that was engaged in civil war. Here, my life is different. With Girls Inc. I have learned to love who I am and embrace where I am from.

- Asma, 18

CElebration BreakfastThis annual event honored the previous year’s achievements while also looking forward to the excitement of the year ahead. This year, we selected BNSF Railway as our Strong Partner, Kathy Wolfe as our Bold Woman, and Jill Freer as the Volunteer of the Year.

“This is by far my favorite event of the year. What a wonderful way to celebrate the mission of Girls Inc.!” - Kathy Wolfe

Day of the girl

40th anniversary Gala

More than 800 participants gathered at the Tarrant County Courthouse to proclaim the Girls Inc. Bill of Rights. The event brought awareness to the issues facing girls today while also allowing for the peaceful participation in an empowering first amendment activity.

Corporate partners, stakeholders, and current and former board members gathered to celebrate 40 years of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. More than $125,000 was raised for the local scholarship fund.

“We started small but always dreamed big. It is with continued passion and belief in all things possible, there will be a happily ever after.” -Charlotte Moore, 1976 Board Chair

my bold future

Alex Aguirre is a Girls Inc. of Tarrant County alum and Girls Inc. National scholar who received a $15,000 scholarship in 2012. On December 16, 2016, Alex graduated from Texas State University.

In July, 75 girls were celebrated and showered with much-needed items to level the playing field for them in their transition into post-secondary education. Each girl was given items from their wish lists and encouraging notes from the community. Of the 75 girls, 47 are pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. These fields hold many opportunities for building a successful career and a financially independent future.

“Not only did Girls Inc. give me the drive to pursue college by reinforcing the belief that women can do anything they set their minds to, but they gave me the tools to be successful in college.” - Alex Aguirre, Texas State University Graduate 2016

“Girls Inc. is part of my DNA. The program has helped me find myself as a young woman and inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming an engineer. The lessons I have learned are ingrained in my soul. Thanks to Girls Inc., I am confident, outspoken, and, of course, strong, smart, and bold!” -Madison
