2016 BBB Center for Character Ethics Impact Report Our Mission To serve current and future leaders and educators as a provider of assessment, training, and recognition in leadership character and organizational ethics to advance Trust in the marketplace. The Center was again a partner in two of the Governor’s Community Connectors Mentoring programs. We provided character enrichment training to project mentors and developed character-based materials for adults and students. Materials were based on the UncommonSense principles. The two projects include adult mentors and student mentees in four Columbus area middle and high schools, serving about 100 participants in after-school programs. Additionally, as a partial fulfillment of our mission to “Inspire Future Leaders”, the Center has constantly sought to pursue multiple points of collaboration with Central Ohio universities to strengthen their efforts to advance leadership character ethics teaching concepts and practices among their faculty, students and alum. We have been able to work with the following universities to conduct studies, research, provide frameworks and other components to university administration and classes: Ohio State University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Ohio Christian University, and Capital University. We are hopeful that our working relationship will continue to be a benefit to both BBB and those universities we have partnered with to grow their leadership character focused foundations, as well as reinforce our role in future endeavors. The Center sponsored the 2016 Central Ohio Laws of Life Essay Contest, which was open to students in grades 6-8 in our 21 county service area. Thirty-two teachers in eighteen schools selected the best one-hundred essays from over 1,500 student essays written in their classes. A panel of twenty volunteer judges from area businesses evaluated the essays, selecting the top 21. Over 100 students, parents, teachers, administrators and contest judges attended an awards banquet in May, hosted at Wendy’s headquarters, where over $3,500 in prizes were awarded to the students and their schools thanks to generous grants from Honda, Wendy’s and other charitable sponsors.

Laws of Life Essay Contest

The 2016 Spark Awards, in its inaugural year, recognized three millennial entrepreneurial organizations whose leaders demonstrate a higher level of character, generate a culture that is authentic about its mission, and connect with their community. BBB partnered with CivicHacks to honor the recipients during their Startup Storytellers event in April. Over 50 nominations were received, and eligible entries were evaluated by an independent, voluntary panel of judges. The review process was in union with the Torch Awards for Ethics, as the Spark Awards are built heavily on the TRUST! Principles. The 2016 recipients were invited to share their stories during simultaneous BBB, Center and CivicHacks events throughout the year. The Spark Awards recipients were also an integral part of the 2016 Torch Awards program, as we highlighted The Leadership Journey.

BBB went beyond its usual audience to engage the under-35 entrepreneurial crowd, and was ultimately recognized nationally by the Council of BBB’s in Indianapolis in September of 2016 for the creation and implementation of the first Spark Awards program. The Spark Awards presented a tremendous growth and revenue opportunity for BBB and had national implications. We continue to build our grassroots efforts as we nurture and grow relationships and partnerships with startups and entrepreneurs in Central Ohio.

Spark Awards

BBB continued to be the go-to organization for ethics and trust-building speaking engagements, presenting on average once a month to area business and civic organizations throughout the Central Ohio region.

BBB in the Community

The Students of Integrity scholarship program recognized 10 Central Ohio high school seniors at the 2016 Torch Awards for Ethics luncheon, awarding each a $1,000 scholarship towards their education at a college or university of the students’ choosing. Winners were selected from applications from over 60 schools in the 21 counties in central Ohio and reviewed by a selection committee comprised of academic and business professionals. Students were judged based on leadership, community service, academics and an UncommonSense character essay. The scholarships and expenses, totaling $12,000, were made possible with generous funding provided by Columbia Gas of Ohio, a NiSource Company.

Students of Integrity

The Center celebrated three outstanding organizations for their trust-building best practices at the 2016 Torch Awards for Ethics luncheon. The awards banquet was attended by nearly 400 guests at The Ohio State University, Ohio Union- Archie Griffin Grand Ballroom in November. The event was supported by 16 sponsoring companies and was hosted by Karina Nova of 10TV. The Leadership Journey showcased the Students of Integrity Award recipients introducing the Spark Awards recipients, culminating in a celebration of the new Torch Award for Ethics honorees. A copy of the Columbus CEO special Torch Awards supplement, a 16-page insert highlighting Center for Character Ethics awards and recognition programs, was given to each guest.
