The Flooring Association Northwest is one of the strongest in the WFCA affiliated associations around the United States. We have a strong member-ship, valuable dinner meetings, The Market, networking opportunities and a great golf tournament. Every member makes this Association a success. We have so much potential to grow, improve and lead our industry into the future. This can be achieved by all of us by allowing others in our organizations to become involved.

Our businesses never know when people are going to come and go. In our industry people pop back up. A retail sales person may move and work for a distributor. A manufacturer rep may start working at a retail store. People change jobs and move around, but don’t leave the industry. We all know change is around us. We need to mentor millennials and encourage them to get involved. We need to start allowing them to participate, learn and develop relationships of their own.

The time is now for us to mentor the leaders of our organizations for tomorrow. A great avenue for seasoning our future leaders is at The Flooring Association Northwest’s dinner meetings, seminars and social gatherings. At FAN we make sure our dinner meeting speakers can bring value to our membership. Spending a minimal amount of money on quar-terly dinner meetings for different employees in your organizations provides exposure, networking and education. Free seminars help guide, teach and tune-up those in your organization. Social gatherings such as the annual golf tournament and casino night give the opportunity to connect with those around you.

There are still ways to be involved in the association with minimal effort. Have a voice. State what you think would be valuable to our members. Answer the surveys if you participate in events. Give us feedback. Help on a committee. The Association encourages members to volunteer for the Market, golf tournament, dinner meeting speakers, and seminar/training topics.

The Flooring Association Northwest’s members can benefit from getting involved, and by encouraging engagement of others in their organization. Our industry is fantastic. We should take pride in being one of the strongest WFCA affiliate associations in the United States. We are unique in that we work together instead of against each other. We need to start passing the torch to the next generation and mentor them into great leaders. We can do so by granting them access into the Association’s dinner meetings, seminars and social events.

Speak Sports. Talk Business.Presented by Jen Mueller, Founder of Talk Sporty to Me

Sports is more than a social pastime. Sports is a business tool, one that can help you improve overall communication, cultivate new career opportunities, and increase your influence by staying relevant and top of mind.

Sports broadcasting veteran Jen Mueller has been on the field for some of the biggest wins in Northwest sports history. As a business owner she knows how to translate those victories into personal wins and strategize ways to:

• Identify and bridge communication gaps using 15-second conversations• Engage in value-added conversations that increase productivity and engagement• Utilize sports fandom as a business development strategy

You’ll discover how to apply the same approach Jen uses with professional athletes on live TV to your conversations at work. This engaging presentation includes stories from inside the locker rooms and practical strategies that can be implemented immediately.

You’ll never think of sports conversations the same again.

Presenter – Jen Mueller, Founder of Talk Sporty to MeJen Mueller, America’s Expert Talker is rarely at a loss for words. She pursued a career in sports broadcasting after repeated comments of “talks too much” from teachers and family members. A 15-year sports broadcasting veteran, Jen currently serves as the Seattle Seahawks sideline radio reporter. She is also part of the Seattle Mariners televi-sion broadcast team on ROOT Sports.

In addition to her work on the sidelines, Jen launched Talk Sporty to Me in 2009 and teaches business professionals how to improve communication and leverage fandom in business. Jen published her second book Talk Sporty to Me: Thinking Outside the Box Scores in January. She is also the author of Game Time: Learn to Talk Sports in 5 Minutes a Day for Business. Jen graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2000 with degrees in Broadcasting Jour-nalism and Public Policy.

5 Reasons to Become an NFL Fanby Jen Mueller

The first few weeks of the NFL season are in the books. If you’re not already a fan, now is a great time to get on board. What’s in it for you? Multiple relationship building opportunities in business. 1. Everyone is doing it (just about.) I know your mom told you it wasn’t a valid defense, but the NFL could be the exception. Surveys show that about half of all Americans say they’re NFL fans. That translates to about 159 million NFL fans in the U.S. 2. Strength in Numbers. With that many fans, it’s not just about becoming part of the cool club, it’s about all the relationships you can cultivate as a result of being a fan. Being a fan gives you common ground and easy access to all the other football fans in the U.S. Who do you want to do business with? 3. Headline Generator. Whether you become a fan or not, the NFL season will dom-inate headlines from now through February. In fact, the NFL makes headlines year round because of its popularity. Not being a fan keeps you out of the conversation for half of the year. Becoming a fan, gives you multiple conversation opportunities. 4. Once a Week. Each team plays just one game a week. If you think about it in terms of time management, that’s only one score to track for ‘your’ team every week.

5. Diversity and Inclusion. Talking about the game doesn’t have to include a statistical breakdown of what happened in the game. There’s plenty to talk about without getting into the numbers or the rules. Think about the location of the game, food served during a game, where the opposing team is from, etc. as conversation starters and talking points. Jen Mueller, America’s Expert Talker, is a 15- year sports broadcasting veteran. She currently works on the Seattle Mariners TV broadcasts for ROOT Sports and on the Seattle Seahawks radio broadcasts on 710 AM in Seattle. WFCA’s Vice President of Professional Development and many CFI employees. “This new facility represents the first of many doors that will be opened in the field of installation,” said Jennings. “Everyone at CFI should be very proud of their multiple contributions to the flooring industry. It is because of them that this initiative has been set in motion. It is a very exciting time in our industry and I am very proud to be a part of it.”

“CFI was built on a solid foundation and through our new association with WFCA, we are now equipped to maxi-mize our background and expertise and truly reach our potential while we work towards a solution to the installa-tion issue faced by everyone in our industry,” said Varden. In addition to the new Lenexa facility, CFI will be opening a brand new 10,000 SF installation training facility in Dal-las, TX that will be able to accommodate workshops and classes for all types and levels of installation training and certification. The school is slated to open its doors in late September this year. Students from as far away as Brazil are already enrolling in the school. The Dallas location is projected to be the first leg of a larger plan to bring CFI training and certification to other markets across the U.S.

In addition to expanding breadth and reach of training courses, which will also include classes for sales pro-fessionals, CFI will enhance focus on recruitment efforts from a number of sources. “We have an aging popula-tion of installers,” Varden said. He explained that many younger workers and trainees fled the industry as the job market shrank during the recession. “We are tapping into targeted demographic groups such as veterans and high school vocational groups who we feel would be great candidates for this field.”

August 24, 2015 - Dalton, GA – Today Scott Humphrey, Chief Executive Officer, WFCA announced that his organization will add CFI under the WFCA umbrella and provide the infusion of capital necessary to continue and expand CFI’s installation training and certification pro-grams. The decision to make the investment and add CFI to WFCA was unanimously voted on by the WFCA Board and CFI Executive Committee at recent meetings.

“At the WFCA, our main purpose is to ensure the suc-cess and profitability of the specialty flooring dealer,” said Humphrey. “We recognize that it is our duty to identify and improve areas of our industry that touch the retailer and one vital way to do this is to ensure the future of pro-fessional installation.”

WFCA and CFI are longtime partners with a relationship extending back more than two decades. Historically WFCA has helped spread awareness of CFI’s training programs and has funded hundreds of installation class-es and workshops across the country. Taking the organi-zation under its wing at a critical time in its history was a natural move for WFCA.

“Where would we be without CFI and all of the blood, sweat and tears that the CFI leadership team and its members put into this vital field?” Humphrey asked. He explained that the evolving business environment and the critical shortage of certified installers made this the right time for CFI and its crucial programs to be brought front and center. “For decades, we as an industry have stood on the sidelines and watched all of the professionals at CFI work their magic,” Humphrey said. “I can’t begin to articulate my excitement about what we have in store with our new venture together with Robert Varden and his CFI team.”

Humphrey said that the CFI name will be retained and used for the expanded programs. Robert Varden, who recently agreed to act as the CEO of CFI, will take on the role of Vice President of the CFI Division, which will oversee the existing and expanded certification training programs.

To accommodate its growing divisions, WFCA opened an office and training facility in Lenexa, KS that will house staff from both organizations including Tom Jennings,

All contractors who work in Pre-1978 Housing are required to be Certified Firms for Lead Based Paint - Is Your Firm Certified?

Firms who knowingly or willingly violate EPA’s or Commerce Ren-ovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program requirements could result in penalties of up to $37,500. To comply with this new law, contractors must have one Certified Renovator on staff and have their company certified with the EPA (or Washington State Department of Commerce for $50 fee.)

To become a Certified Renovator, you must have someone from your firm take an 8-hour course with a hands-on component. And previously certified renovators must take a Refresher course every 5 years. Your firm must then apply for certification as a firm with an on-staff Certified Renovator.

You will learn:• How to comply with the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting

Rule, including education requirements for homeowners• How to check for lead paint• How to containment, minimize exposure along with cleanup

procedures

This award recognizes “exceptional innovative waste reduction programs”. Division 9 Flooring’s Sustainability Program has been in place since 2008. Over the last seven years, Division 9 Flooring has diverted more than 9000 pounds of carpet and pad from landfill. D9’s commitment to the

environment is unwavering. They compost food waste and have a washer and dryer on- site for reusing towels and washcloths. They even encourage their employees to bring in items that can be difficult torecycle like plastic bags, batteries and light bulbs. All it takes is the desire to be proactive and engaged in the process, and a touch of creativity. I hope our example inspires other businesses to take the small steps that add up to a big impact on the environment, because it’s absolutely within reach to do so, and very rewarding to know you’ve made a difference”.
