  • Its an exciting time to live in and visit Butler County. This year will kick off with three new county commissioners: Leslie Osche, Kim Geyer and Kevin Boozel. We look forward to working together to create positive change in the community. A major project is the Kaufman House, scheduled to reopen in the first quarter of 2017, which will stimulate the economy, create jobs, and prepare future generations of hospitality employees with its restoration as a restaurant, boutique hotel and training facility.

We continue to work hard to bring new events to the area, such as PyroFest and Shadracks Christmas Wonderland, and are pleased to welcome sports teams of all types, including the Pittsburgh Penguins themselves!

It is my sincere hope you enjoy our 2016 guide and are inspired to explore Butler Countys delightful and diverse destinations. From rustic country roads to the bustling Cranberry Township, theres a little something for everyone. Stay for the night, a weekend, or even a whole week. You deserve a getaway!

Theres no place like Butler County for the holidays! The worlds largest drive-through, fully synchronized, LED Christmas light and music show, Shadracks Christmas Wonderland, is returning to the Big Butler Fairgrounds in November 2016!

Hop in the car with your family, tune in your radio and watch the hundreds of thousands of dancing lights come alive perfectly synchronized to the music in your vehicle. Its like a front row seat at the most dynamic Christmas concert ever! The show is full of huge, themed displays and at the end of the over two-mile long route, the fun continues at Santas Village. The kids can look forward to having a photo taken with Santa, enjoying seasonal refreshments and more.

Shadracks Christmas Wonderland originated in Bristol, Tennessee and has garnered national media attention and awards for the elaborate choreography of the show. They hosted their first light show in 2007 and have improved each year by integrating new technology, music, custom-built animated elements and 100% environmentally-friendly LED lights. Shadracks Christmas Wonderland debuted in Butler County in 2015, and we are lucky to be one of only a handful of locations across the country that hosts this fabulous attraction.

We invite you to make an annual family tradition of visiting the Christmas Wonderland to celebrate the holidays! The light show will be open from late November 2016 through the beginning of January 2017.

  • Butler has a rich history shaped by immigrants and industries. The city is the county seat and was named for General Richard Butler, a Revolutionary War military leader. A mix of history, arts and community events make the city of Butler charming.

Since its founding in 1800, there have been two major immigration waves. Early settlers were German, Scots-Irish and English seeking peace, religious freedom and land. In 1887, Butler emerged in the global flat glass industry bringing in workers from Belgium, France, Germany and England. The next industry to boom in Butler was the manufacturing of the first ever, all-steel railcars by the Standard Steel Car Company, founded by John Hansen and Diamond Jim Brady. Many eastern Europeans came to work in Butler during this second wave to build a brighter future for their families.

Butlers community grew up around Standard Steel Car (SSC), which became one of the largest builders of steel cars in the U.S. The imprint it had was seen in the many domed churches of

Lyndora, and the company housing that lined Hansen Avenue. In 1930, SSC merged with Pullman Co. to create the great Pullman-Standard that employed thousands of Butler residents until its closing in 1982. The community remains enriched by the culture and heritage of the immigrants once employed by these industries.

Butler also has an interesting automotive history and is known round the world as the birthplace of the Jeep. Six automobiles got their start in Butler: the Huselton, Standard, Russell Sherman, American Austin, American Bantam and the Bantam BRC, or Jeep. In 1940, the US Army asked 135 tractor and auto manufacturers to design a four-wheel drive, 40 horsepower, 1,200 pound reconnaissance car that could haul soldiers as well as heavy artillery. The challenge? The designer was expected to have a working prototype available for a test run within 49 days. Only two companies responded to the request, The American Bantam Car Company and

Willys-Overland Motors of Toledo, Ohio. Bantam won the contract and

    thats where the Jeep began.

Kelly Automotive Park (formerly Pullman Park), built in 1934, was used for minor league baseball for 20 years until the Pittsburgh Pirates farm team left in 1951. The ballpark saw many famous faces during its professional baseball days, including Lou Gehrig, Whitey Ford and Joe DiMaggio, who played for a farm team of the New York Yankees. Rebuilt in 2008, the stadium is currently the home of the Butler BlueSox, part of the Prospect League.

Butler has a fascinating history of celebrities as well. People born and/or raised in Butler include rocker Bret Michaels, numerous professional athletes, Tony-award winning actress Michele Pawk, politicians and even a former Miss USA.

Today, downtown Butler is undergoing a renaissance with a new Marriott Springhill Suites and a 230-space parking garage on the way. Several microbreweries are also open or coming soon. Come shop, dine, explore a museum or gallery, and attend a show to see for yourself why Butler is one of the very best small towns!

Transforming Our County Seat One Wall at a TimeWhen you hear the word Walldogs, what comes to mind? Most likely, it is not a group of sign painters and mural artists. But thats what they are! Walldogs come from all around the world and bring their amazing skills to cities to paint walls with images of historical significance to that town. Each wall is a representation of people, places and industries. Walldogs take time away from their businesses to spend four or five days each year transforming a community with murals and old-fashioned wall advertisements!

Jill Welsh, a local Walldog, and the Butler County Historical Society worked together to bring this outstanding group of artists to come to Butler this summer. They will be transforming walls throughout town from July 27th to 31st featuring the following subjects, most pertaining to Butlers history.

    Pioneer Cabin and Early Schoolhouse

    The Birthplace of the Jeep

    Butlers Steel Industry

    Uncle Billy Smith

    General Richard Butler

    Railcars/Pullman Standard

    Horse-drawn Mail Delivery

    50s Diners/Drive-ins

    Breweries

After the fact, these murals will be integrated into a walking tour and tourist attraction.

{ }INSIDER TIP: Saxonburg has some lovely bed and breakfasts. For a relaxing getaway off the beaten

path, check out our comparison chart on page 32 to see which B&B suits you best.

Despite its small size, Saxonburg is big on charm

and is currently experiencing a rebirth. The community hosts

several events and festivals, including new Main Street

Mingles. If your visit to Butler County doesnt coincide with

one of the towns special events, youre always welcome

to relax on a bench or stroll along the sidewalk while

admiring the preservation of days gone by.

Saxonburg, named for the German state of Saxony, began as a vision for a wholesome town offering a new life for German settlers. With distinctive architecture modeled after a German hamlet, it still retains much of its original character. In fact, Main Street was named to the National Register of Historic Places and 32 of the towns buildings are more than 100 years old! It was also designed so that the highest point of the town was the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church, which still stands as such today.

What do Saxonburg and the Big Apple have in common? John Roebling, one of the towns founders, left his mark in both places. He was the inventor of the wire cable used on the Brooklyn Bridge as well as the designer of it, so while you meander through Roebling Park, take notice of the sizeable reminder of his impact on the town: a replica Brooklyn Bridge.

Today, Main Street is lined with shops and businesses that share the same passion for preserving the towns history. You dont have to go far to sip a cup of coffee, enjoy a delicious meal, purchase fresh baked goods, or shop for unique items in historic buildings.

Taking the old, transforming it into something new and still preserving the old world charm is a skill Saxonburg has perfected. With visual improvements to the streetscape and storefronts, and new businesses popping up throughout Downtown Saxonburg, Roebling would, without a doubt, be proud of his towns rebirth.

Harmony.Youll discover a lot of incredible and sometimes quirky history in Harmony. This quaint village of old brick and log buildings is one of western Pennsylvanias most historically important places and its first National Historic Landmark District.

Harmony was founded in 1804 by the Harmony Society of German Lutheran Separatists who were seeking religious freedom. The Harmonists, who believed Christs return was imminent, adopted celibacy to remain spiritually pure, but also ensured the groups eventual demise. Father George Rapp, a founder of the town, frequently looked down on his people from Rapps Seat. It can still be accessed today from Evergreen Mill Road and offers outstanding views, especially during autumn.

After two hundred years, the society lives on through the historic architecture, landmarks, cemeteries and events that celebrate its heritage. More than 50 buildings have been preserved, nine of which are operated by Harmony Museum for guests to visit. Another belief of the Harmonists can be seen in their cemetery located just outside townyou wont

find any grave markers for the approximately 100 society members buried there. Try your luck opening the cemeterys one-ton stone gate that revolves evenly on its center. Youll find its easier than it sounds!

Today, you can stroll through Weihnachmarkt (German Christmas Market) and ring in the New Year during Silvester, on German time (6 p.m.) in remembrance of the founders heritage. An afternoon can be spent perusing art, antiques and shops. Other highlights include great coffee, and dining at the historical inn, which is said to be haunted. Youll quickly discover that spending time in Harmony is simply harmonious.

{ }In fall of 2015, Hollywood recognized Harmony for its historic charm. Ewan McGregor, Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning were in town

to film American Pastoral, based on the novel by Phillip Roth. The film created quite a buzz here and is set to be released sometime this year.

Evans City. When the land that became Evans City was settled in the 1800s, the residents would probably have never guessed that it would later gain notoriety from zombiesnor did they even know what zombies were!

With hit shows like The Walking Dead, we sure do today. What zombie fans today may not know is that the craze started in Evans City, filming location for the 1968 cult classic Night of the Living Dead. Director George Romero returned to the town again in 1973 to film The Crazies, a film in which the town was blown up!

Today Evans City proudly honors its past with wooden zombie silhouettes, and its nickname, City of Black Gold, referring to a 1915 oil boom. During October 2015 festivities, a large historical marker and plaques (shown to the right) were placed in town linking Evans City to its film history.

This tiny town is a main throughway between Butler and the western part of the county as its Main Street is Route 68. Despite its size, the town has several festivals, specialty shops, restaurants, a community park and a museum. Its definitely worth a stop and not just a drive-through.

With a name like Zelienople, you might wonder what the first residents were thinking! The town was named for the founders daughter, Zelie, and nople is the Greek word for town. Learn more about this history at the historical societys Buhl and Passavant House museums. You can even see framed artwork made of real human hair! Another piece of fun is the lion water fountain in the towns four corners (intersection of Main Street and Grandview Avenue). If you want a drink, you have to stick your head in his mouth!

On Friday nights, The Strand Theater shows movies for only $5; some classics, some current flicks. This restored theater dates back to 1914 and was, at one point, used for vaudeville! In addition to movies, you can catch top-notch live entertainment, including Broadway performers and more.

You can find additional entertainment year-round with frequent holiday parades, and special programming by the Community Park Association. This group currently has an initiative for a new pool and the plans look spectacular! Between this and other enhancements, the town is becoming even lovelier as it ages.

    Cranberry Township.

The Comeback Kings & Queens of Butler CountyReclaimed. Repurposed. Re-loved.

Who doesnt love a good comeback? Here in Butler County, that doesnt just apply to mankind. We have some brave, creative souls who invest their time, skills and money into old broken down furniture and items people dont want anymore, bringing them back to life. Jeff of All About Reclaimed has

been telling people for thirty years, theres nothing he cant recycleand he finally found a way to make a living doing it. One of the most popular items he sells are light fixtures and lampsmade from things like gas cans, vintage funnels, or even old hats. A favorite piece of Jeffs was a light made from a vintage minnow cage. Sometimes it can be hard for him to part with things he has created, which just goes to show the love that is put into upcycling.

Another comeback queen is Sue of Whimsy Antiques who upgrades old furniture, making it appeal to a younger generation. She recalled one particularly interesting piecea 1940s secretary desk which she painted a striking robins egg blue and embellished with old nautical maps. Another clever creation of Sues is luggage racks turned into collapsible tables.

If youre lucky, you can snag upcycled

treasures in some of Butler Countys other secondhand shops like Cranberry Consignment Gallery or Wagon Wheel Antiques. A new resale shop in Zelienople, The Perfect Piece Home Furnishings, routinely features local artists who create furniture out of used pallets, memo boards out of old doors and crown molding, and tables made of industrial items.

Next time you see a shabby old dresser on the curb, think not of its sad and lonely state, but of the gem it could be if given the right TLC! Leave it to our experts to save space in the landfill and create one-of-a-kind pieces youll fall in love with.

If you love old treasures, check out the new Antiques Preferred in Evans City, or look at page 38 in this guide for a full directory of antique and secondhand shops. Explore the wonders of the past and give your favorites a new home.

{ }Did you know? George Washington was here! He passed through in

1753 on a mission attempting to avert a war with the French. A historical marker stands at the intersection of Franklin Road and Route 228, and

you can follow Washingtons Trail which commemorates his mission with a driving tour. A free brochure is available on our website.

If bright lights, shops and restaurants sound exciting, then Cranberry Township is the place for you.

More than 30,000 people call Cranberry home, and for good reason, as the quality of life is excellent. Mars.Yes, there really is life on Mars, and residents take full advantage of the fun opportunities their towns name creates.

A flying saucer is parked in the town square, offering an unusual photo opportunity for visitors. Alien sightings occur daily in storefront windows. Letters with a Mars, PA postmark are frequently mailed around the world from the local post office.

In June 2015, Mars went all out, creating a new annual event to celebrate the planet Mars New Year. The second event wont take place until May 2017 since it takes Mars almost twice as long as Earth to orbit the sun. The event is definitely worth noting though, with involvement from NASA and a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).

The town of Mars dates back to 1792 when the first settler arrived in the area. Mars flourished in its early years because it was located on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and on the Butler Short Line, the electric trolley route that linked Pittsburgh and Butler. Today, the historical society operates a museum, including a restored caboose, and a scaled-down version of the Mars Shortline Railroad which you can ride for a donation.

Diverse BeginningsThe entrepreneurial spirit of our campground owners comes from many diverse backgrounds. Robert Wehr of Bear Run Campground was an international engineer before deciding to bring families close to nature in his campground near Lake Arthurs shoreline, bordering Moraine State Park, and near the North Country Trail and Jennings Environmental Education Center. Developing a campground from the ground up gave Robert an opportunity to combine his abilities to design, build, maintain and improve a project on an ongoing basis. The campground that Robert started from scratch in 1975 has since become a top-rated destination and is still run by the Wehr family.

The route that Ed Tanski of Buttercup Woodlands Campground took to open

his facility is quite different. Tanski is a Navy veteran from

Vietnam. After returning home and operating many other businesses, he and his wife were

approached by the owner of Buttercup Woodlands. As

    avid seasonal campers, this opportunity

    sounded very appealing and in

1997, the Tanskis purchased the campground. In the last 18 years, the campground has acquired four

or five stars in all of the categories

    scored by Woodalls campground grading

system. Todays campers can enjoy theme weekends,

a pool, and a recreation hall that frequently offers bands or DJ entertainment.

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest Kampground is ranked in the top 1% nationwide through dedication from the Quigley family. As a child, Denny Quigley was immersed in the hospitality business since his father owned a hotel. After 20 years in the auto parts industry, he decided it was time for a change. The campground has since been recognized nationally as Park of the Year (2011, 2014 and 2015) as well as Entrepreneur and Facility of the Year within the Yogi Bear campground system. Highlights include a camp store, brand new playground featuring a jump pillow, yurts, new cabin units and a family-friendly, customer-comes-first atmosphere.

    One-of-a-Kind Experiences

Look no further than Coopers Lake Campground in Slippery Rock if you want to stay in the heart of the action. Coopers offers camping during special events they host. On many weekends throughout the summer, you will find a wide range of annual events being hosted including PyroFest, the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival and Tough Mudder.

Try something new at Whispering Pines Farm in Cabot where the rural nature of camping is paired with a few luxury accommodations to make you feel relaxed and rejuvenated. The result is glampingwhere you get the best of both worlds! A queen size bed and continental breakfast complete the experience.

Charming, remote, historic yet close to local attractions? That is what youll find at Indian Brave Campground in Harmony. Its wooded campsites were once inhabited by the Native Americans many years ago. Enjoy an Olympic-size pool, entertainment and more, including a walking bridge built over the Connoquenessing Creek to access Historic Harmonys shops and eateries.

If youre really looking for a weekend away from it all, Peaceful Valley Campground in West Sunbury is waiting! This KOA (Kampgrounds of America) campground offers horseback riding and is just a short drive away from state game lands and a fishing lake!

    Near Moraine State Park

Hillside huts and primitive campsites will make you one with nature at Breakneck Campground in Portersville. Open year-round (with the exception of September and October when it transforms into Cheesemans Fright Farm), its the perfect spot for campers, hikers, kayakers and outdoor lovers. Under new ownership, Lake Arthur Family Campground borders Moraine State Park. The 58 acres of campground offer both wooded and open sites with nearby access to Moraines Route 528 boat launch.

What makes Moraine State Park so great? Beautiful scenery in every

    season, tons of outdoor

    activities, rich history and

thats just the tip of the iceberg.

Or in Moraines case, should we

    say glacier?!

Moraine State Park gets its namesake from an event that happened tens of thousands of years ago. A moraine refers to the accumulated debris a retreating glacier has left behind. The next chapter in Moraines history involved deep-mining, strip-mining, drilling and pollution. Luckily, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy saw a different future for the land. Gas and oil wells were plugged, mines were sealed, thousands of trees were planted, and Muddy Creek was dammed to create the lake. Thank goodness for this renaissance. Today Moraine is one of Pennsylvanias top parks, and you can enjoy a plethora of activities (land, air and sea!) each season throughout the parks 16,725 acres.

Sea: Summertime is when Moraine State Park really shines with endless lake activities. The 3,225-acre Lake Arthur features ten boat launches sprinkled throughout the park, and the Crescent Bay Marine and Boat Rental can provide kayaks, paddleboats, canoes, sailboats, pontoon boats and small motorboats. Set sail for a gorgeous day on the lake swimming, windsurfing, fishing or stand up paddleboarding!

Want to learn to Stand Up Paddleboard? SurfSUP Adventures can help! Take lessons and eco-tours at the park and youll be gliding over the beautiful waterways in no time!

Take in the beautiful scenery and watch the seasons change on the Nautical Nature, Moraine Preservation Funds 45-passenger enclosed pontoon boat. It operates on a regular schedule spring through fall, providing public tours and chartered cruises.

Land: Name your favorite outdoor activity. Chances are, Moraine State Park has you covered. The parks six-mile mountain biking trail was named one of the most technical mountain bike trails in the world! You can also ride on a paved seven-mile bicycle trail, hike Moraines 28.6 miles of trails, and go geocaching. 13,600 acres of the park are open to hunting, trapping and dog training.

An Insiders Look at Moraine State ParkBy: Teri Whelan

My personal experience with Moraine State Park started the summer of 1987 as a dockworker at Davis Hollow Marina. Ive spent nearly 30 years enjoying the park and have found some amazing ways to maximize quality time at the park.

For those who enjoy Biking, try starting at the end of the bike trail at the Moraine Outdoor Center. The trail is more level and shaded than starting at the trailhead. Bring along snacks for a break at one of the tree-covered picnic tables at Watts Bay Marina. When the winds are right, sit and watch the sailors on their colorful sailboats. Many times, the sailing club will be holding races, and youll really be in for a visual treat.

If Hiking and Picnicking are on your agenda, the Sunken Garden Trail is an easy trail not far from the entrance of the South Shore. It offers many spots for beautiful views of the lake. For a private picnic, drive past the beach to the Crestline Picnic Area entrance on your left. There are lots of tables at the John M. Eisler Picnic Grove. You wont notice the view from the parking lot, but trust me, it is one of the best spots in the park!

There are many options for Boating at Moraine. For non-motorized boat owners, consider launching at Pleasant Valley on the South Shore. The cove is non-motorized, and you can stay there or venture out into Big Run and enjoy quiet Beaver Cove. The North Shore has a wonderful launch at the McDanels Area. For a truly peaceful experience, paddle in the cove past the cabins. A less populated area of the lake that also offers quick access to the Muddy Creek area can be found at the 528 Launch.

Interested in Fishing but dont own the equipment? Stop by the park office with just a photo ID and for the day, free of charge, you can borrow equipmentfishing poles in various sizes, tackle boxes with fake bait, hooks, and bobbers.

Hopefully my tips help you make the most of your time at Moraine. It truly is the gem of Butler County!

Immerse yourself in Preston Park, an 88-acre English garden in Butler Township. Dr. Frank Preston, an ecologist, glass scientist and ornithologist, believed in conservation of nature. He created an estate to live, work and enjoy the natural surroundings complete with a lily pond, two pedestrian bridges, an arboretum of 40 different species of pine trees, and 50 acres of forest. Preston and his wife deeded the estate to the township, so after his death it was renamed Preston Park in his honor.

Today, visitors can admire the unique vegetation and fields of well-maintained prairie grass, tree-shaded

picnic areas, an abundance of wildlife, and gently sloped, well-marked trails.

The park is recognized by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the National Park Service for its historical significance and is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2016, they are planning guided tours of the property. Tours like these are definitely something to watch out for because there is so much history in the park that you would never know about at first glance! One such feature is the compass rose that points out the distance to faraway places like London and the North Pole.

Get Fit! Taking a hike, kayaking, or swimming is good for you! An average person can burn over 250 calories by simply enjoying an outdoor activity!

Put this on your Bucket List! Hike part of the rugged and peaceful 4,600 miles of the North Country Trail. Stretching across seven states, it is the longest National Scenic Trail in the US. Created by Congress in 1980, it now passes through 12 national forests plus our very own Moraine State Park and Jennings Environmental Education Center! Even if you arent adventurous enough to complete it all, start by enjoying the picturesque stretch that can be enjoyed right here in Butler County!

Todd Nature Reserve (formerly Todd Sanctuary), located in Sarver in southeastern Butler County, was the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvanias first reserve. Its 176 acres are a part of Pennsylvania Audubons Buffalo Valley Important Bird Area program. Hike on five miles of trails among beautiful forest, streams and a pond. You can also visit the Audubon Societys other presence in Butler County, Succop Nature Park, to explore the walking trails and pond in a serene environment.

The gorgeous photo above was a winner of our quarterly photo contest. Are you a shutterbug? Four times a year we give three winners Butler County Gift Certificates which are valid at about 100 different locations. If you want to know the best spots for photography at Moraine State Park (also by our insider, Teri Whelan) and the rest of Butler County, explore www.VisitButlerCounty.com/ photography for some excellent ideas.

Butler County is fortunate to have not only natural parks, but plenty of community parks as well. Sometimes you just cant beat the wilderness, but other times, it feels great to take a dip in a crystal clear swimming pool. The combination of many diverse parks makes Butler County special to anyone who appreciates the outdoors.

All year round, youll find special events in just

about all of our parksfrom family-friendly entertainment to education to concerts. Pictured to the left is the annual Regatta at Lake Arthur. This and Winterfest are two of the largest events for outdoor enthusiasts. Keep up with us on social media and be the first to know whats happening in and around our gorgeous county.
