Letter from the President
...from your KMTA President I send each of you “cool” wishes on these hot summer days! May you have a good chance for some restorative time this summer, in whatever form that may take. KMTA’s educational programs and activities have continued to show their worth in the experiences of students across the state. Thank you for your involvement on their behalf and your work with your peers in local and state programs. Coming away from facilitating at a Music Progressions event, I am again reminded that the instruction that we provide in developmental ways, students are are not likely receiving any place else. May you all find a strong sense of purpose in what you are accomplishing with your students. Thank you for the opportunity to attend and represent Kansas at the MTNA conference in San Antonio in April. There was quite a contingency from Kansas taking it all in. As for me, and I hope for others, the contest winners recitals, special guest artists performances, and a good number of session presenters were truly inspiring. Consider the conference in Baltimore, next March 18-22; invite a friend, and make plans to join in the inspiration! Please take a close look within this Update at the information on the upcoming State Conference in Topeka, September 23 and 24. Dr. Shiao-li Ding is putting together a won-derful pedagogy-based program that will be worth your time attending! Thank you as well for assistance from Senseney Music in helping arrange for our conference clinicians, ones of national status! Also, make sure to submit on schedule your requests for KMTA mini-grants, plus nominations for Outstanding Teacher and Service Awards. I would also draw your attention to the number of open positions on the KMTA State Board. Contacts are being made during the summer to hopefully fill some of these important positions that fuel our programs! I want to thank individuals that have served in the past for their behind-the-scenes work: Shirley Wiebe as liaison to KMEA, and Karla Conner as Music Progressions Chair. We also hope to renew activity with our collegiate chapters with a student president and advisor as well. To mention, the recognized leadership amongst the Kansas membership, and our statistics for maintaining our membership levels, and percentage of members certified are being recognized by other states. We have much to be proud of in what is being achieved – and I hope that brings some enthusiasm into students’ lessons, and a sense of celebra-tion in your local associations! Again, keep “cool” for the summer, and let the energy build for next year! Respectfully yours, Daniel J. Masterson KMTA President

KMTA Spring Board Meeting Minutes
Trinity Evangel Lutheran Church, Abilene
May 21, 2016
Those present: Shiao-Li Ding, J. Bradley Baker, Kristi Baker, Betty Smith, David Tauscher, Dan
Masterson, Lisa Studtmann, and Pat Ziegelmeier. Sally Buxton joined us later in the afternoon.
Board members met for lunch at noon. Then President Masterson called the meeting to order, and members
introduced themselves and told their position on the Board. Minutes from the June 2015 board meeting were
reviewed. Lisa moved to accept the minutes as printed; Kristi Baker seconded the motion. Since there were
not enough members present for a quorum, this served as a recommendation for later approval.
In reports of officers, President Masterson shared information about his work this year, including attendance
at the MTNA Summit Meetings in Cincinnati and the MTNA Conference in San Antonio. Kristi Baker, as
President-Elect, reported that she will try to communicate with people across the state about KMTA/MTNA in
an effort to promote membership in our organization. Kristi also discussed the MTNA Foundation and having
a Foundation Fellow this year. More information will be forthcoming.
Executive Secretary Pat Ziegelmeier shared bank reconciliations for the end of the fiscal year last June up to
the middle of May, 2016. Conference and audition reports were also reviewed. A proposed budget for 2016-
17 was submitted for discussion. This will be voted on at the fall meeting.
Vice-President of Auditions David Tauscher reported on numbers at fall auditions and announced that the
state auditions this year will be held at Washburn University on November 5 and 6. The online enrollment last
year was successful and will be continued this year. David continues to work on improving enrollment proce-
dures and judge tracking. The expansion and success of the auditions has been a big plus for our finances in
KMTA.
Lisa Studtmann as Vice-President of Education reported on the KMTA/MTNA nationally certified teachers of
music and shared an updated list. She mentioned that “NCTM” is the only certification recognized by MTNA
and asked if KMTA needs to maintain a Continuing Education roster. Brenda Simmons needs to be congratu-
lated and added to the website directory.
Vice-President of Conference Shiao-Li Ding shared a tentative budget and plan for the fall conference which
will be held at Washburn University on September 23 & 24 this year. Conference clinicians will be Brenda
Dillon who will share ideas on recreational music making, Jane Magrath, and Robert Weirich. A student con-
ference recital is planned for Friday evening. Kristi Baker proposed a presentation of Isidor Bajic’s Piano Al-
bum at the conference this fall. The conference committee will consider this as they continue making plans;
more details on the schedule and conference fees will be included in the summer Update.
Local Associations Chair Leona Dickman sent a report on the local association grants given out this past year.
Eight local associations applied for grants, and a total of $3,000 was given out. Leona suggested that August
31st be used as the deadline for grant applications this year.
Reena Berger sent a report saying that no submissions for the Outstanding Teacher Award had come in by the
April 15 deadline. The consensus of the Board was to extend the deadline to August 15th.
7
A report on Music Progressions was reviewed by the Board, and it was announced that Karla Conner who had
been the Chair has stepped down. President Masterson asked for the Board’s input on suggestions for that
position and other board vacancies. Discussion followed.
J. Bradley Baker, Newsletter Editor, stated that June 20th will be the deadline for information to be sent to him
for the summer edition of the Update. He hopes to have the newsletter out in July.
At the request of new KSHSAA Director, Craig Manteuffel, President Masterson asked for input from KMTA
on revisions to the KSHSAA Piano Festival’s judge sheets. Judge sheets from other states as well as Kansas
were reviewed and discussed. Suggestions were shared on the sheets and also the pool of judges used for
KSHSAA Piano Festival.
No further business appearing, the Board adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Pat Ziegelmeier,
Executive Secretary

Individuals or associations nominating a teacher should submit the nomination forms and any supporting materials to
Reena Berger Natenberg. The postmark deadline for nominations has been extended to August 15, 2016. The awards

Outstanding Teacher Award: Anyone may nominate a teacher for this award: another teacher , a parent, a local
teaching association, etc. One award may be given per year to an active KMTA member. This is considered to be a
“local” award; a nominee who is active on the local level may receive this award, whether or not he/she has ever served
on the state board. It focuses especially on the teaching aspect of a member’s activities. The award may be received more
than once by a teacher.
Outstanding Service Award: Only a KMTA board member or local association may nominate a teacher for this
award. One award may be given per year to an active KMTA member. This is to be considered a “state” or “national”
award; the winner of this award will be someone who has made significant contributions to the state organization or to

awareness of music study benefits, which in turn invites you to honor one who impacted your music study,
(e.g., teacher, co-worker, KMTA member, clinician, composer), it challenges and helps you to make the same
kind of impact on others.
Honor a special person and make your own impact on music study by mailing in the form below. The

KMTA Capitol Federal® Honors Auditions
About KMTA Honors Auditions 2016 will be the 17th year for the KMTA Honors Auditions. KMTA offers this audition program in the fall for music students wishing to perform for a judge in a competitive setting. Students gain so much by being a part of a group that shares their interest. Listening to other student auditions and being a part of a larger musical community, including parents, teachers, students and other arts supporters makes all of their diligent work worth the effort. Competitions are available for pre-college piano, collegiate piano and chamber music and pre-college strings. For more details about eligibility and requirements, see the Honors Auditions Handbook under the Auditions tab at www.ksmta.org. The Honors Auditions were created to allow any student to participate. Music students of any age level and experience are eligible to participate. Even though the event is a competition, the Honors Auditions are specifically designed to be a positive learning experience for all students who enter them. Teachers first register their students for the District Auditions; if you do not know your district, contact David Tauscher, VP for Auditions, [email protected]. Students receiving a “one” rating at District can proceed to State.

2016 KMTA State Conference
September 23-24
Washburn University
Topeka, Kansas
A Conference Preview from
Dr. Shoai-Li Ding
Vice President of Conference
Professor of Piano, Washburn University
On behalf of the KMTA Conference Committee, I am very pleased to announce that the 2016 KMTA
Conference will be held on Friday, September 23rd and Saturday 24th, on the Washburn University
campus.
We have invited nationally-recognized piano pedagogues Brenda Dillon,
Jane Magrath, and Robert Weirich as our conference presenters. They will
offer a wide range and level of topics and teaching ideas. It promises to be
an exuberant and rich experience for all!
Brenda Dillon will kick off Fr iday afternoon events with “Creative
Ideas for Teaching Recreational Music Making.” Dillon is a national leader
in the development of Recreational Music Making (RMM) programs. Her
session will discuss how RMM students learn to read music and play their
favorite pieces and lead sheets. She will focus on the creative teaching that
hastens these processes and how to create a motivating and non-intimidating
environment. Relevant to all age students the RMM concept is a “dream-
fulfillment” opportunity with no expiration date.
After her workshop, Dillon will present a Hal Leonard publisher showcase
entitled Musicianship Skills for Life. Developing musicianship skills that last a lifetime requires great mu-
sic, thorough pedagogy and creative strategies for motivation. Featured in the showcase will be new re-
leases from the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library, Popular Songs Series, Composer Showcase, The
Eugenie Rocherolle Series, The Phillip Keveren Series, The Jazz Band Pia-
nist, Journey Through the Classics, and more. The Hal Leonard Corpora-
tion will prepare teacher packets for every conference participant at the
session!
Dr. Jane Magrath is one of KMTA’s favorite clinicians. Her book “The
Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature” is a
classic reference work for all of us, and her classical series Encore and
Masterpieces with Flair are among the most frequently assigned books for
students. Dr. Magrath’s presentation will be on Saturday morning, Sept.
24th followed by an Alfred Music publisher showcase that afternoon.
Brenda Dillon, a national leader in
Recreational Music Making, presents a
session and showcase Friday.
Dr. Jane Magrath, author of “The Pianist’s
Guide to Standard Teaching and Perfor-
mance Literature” and editor of Encore
and Masterpieces with Flair, presents on
Saturday morning.

Washburn University
Topeka, Kansas
Also on Saturday afternoon, Dr. Robert Weirich, the Jack Strandberg
Missouri Endowed Chair in Piano at the UMKC Conservatory, will
give a master class for advanced pre-college students. Dr. Weirich has
performed extensively on national and international stages. His
recording of the piano music of Aaron Copland was praised by the
New York Times as “brilliant, probing and austerely beautiful.”
Many of us are avid readers of his columns from Clavier Companion.
We are very fortunate that he will be with us for the conference.
A new feature for this year’s conference will be a recital by students
of KMTA members. The State Honor Auditions and KMTA
Conference have not coincided for many years. This is a time for us to
celebrate student success and teacher achievement. We hope to have
student representatives from all five districts and from different age
groups.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation for the support of Senseney Music of Wichita,
Alfred Music and the Hal Leonard Corporation. Their generosity has made the conference possible.
We would also like to thank the Board of KMTA and Dan Masterson, KMTA president, for providing
strong support at every step of the conference planning. It is going to be an exciting event! Join us
for this extraordinary conference!

It's time again for the Association Grants. This year the KMTA Board decided to keep the Grant Funds at
$3000 for the coming school year, 2016-2017.
The KMTA Association Grant application form is available on the KMTA website and is due to me by August
31st. The amount each Local Association will receive will be decided by a Committee before the Fall
Conference. Last year, eight associations applied and each received some amount for their project. Also re-
member that the Grant report form (also online) is due to me within 30 days of the completion of the project.
Please note that eligibility for a grant is based on 100% MTNA-affiliation of all members in your association.
Any questions, please email Leona Dickman, Local Association Chair at [email protected] or cell: 785-672-1201.
Texting is encouraged.
