Emergency Vehicle Driving - Socorro (MAY 23-25)

A firefighter makes her way down the 4-story drill tower at the New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy’s Socorro campus. Students who par-ticipate in the Academy’s Rope Rescue courses learn to rappel among many other skills. NMFTA’s Level I course familiarizes the students with the basics of rope use, incident organization and rigging of equipment used in rescue situations while the Level II course arms students with

higher level skills involved in actual rope rescue scenarios.

E ach year, NMFTA hosts the NM Fire & EMS Expo — an 8-day training extravaganza that blends fire and emergency medical services instruction for the ultimate benefit of area first responders. One of the more popular elements of the annual event has been the night burn scenarios where participants tackle flammable liquid and liquid propane gas fires in a controlled and supervised setting. B IRD’S EYE VIEW — A firefighter battles cramped quarters and nightfall during a vehicle extrication training session during the 2015 NM Fire & EMS Expo. In addition to night burns, event attendees were also able to participate in nighttime extrication classes, EMS drills and more.. Those who took part in the night exercises said they enjoyed the training as it afforded them the chance to gain some valuable practice in a “real life”

“FFI / FFII Combo Certification” will incorporate four weeks of E-learning self-study as pre-course work, followed by two weeks of practi-cal evolutions at the NMFTA’s Socorro campus. Upon acceptance into the class, students will enroll online through the Jones and Bartlett Navigate 2 E-learning website. This instructor-monitored course offers many learning/assessment tools to assist students with the cognitive portion of the class. Upon successful completion of the online curriculum, students will attend the two weeks of practical application evolutions at NMFTA. These evolutions will be designed to meet all requisite skill requirements as outlined in NFPA 1001. Students who successfully complete the six-week course will receive their IFSAC FFI/FFII certificate. By incorporating the digital learning element, students will only need to com-mit two weeks for onsite training here at our campus. Full protective clothing is required. PPE must comply with NFPA Standards and must pass inspection by Academy staff. Proper clothing

must be worn under the student’s protective clothing. This includes full length pants and long-sleeve shirt made from at least 100% natural fibers or Nomex equivalent. Coveralls may be worn in place of the full -length pants and longsleeve shirt.

Minimum Enrollment: 10; Maximum Enrollment: 24.

Prerequisites: Basic Firefighter Emergency Medical Care and IFSAC Hazardous Materials: Awareness and Operations.
