Councilman Wood, a pharmacist by training, attended last year’s event
and then invited students to speak at the next Town Council meeting.
Ethan Sears - Youth Emcee - Quiz Show Host
A 9th grader at Fauquier HS, Ethan enjoys writing and
reading and has been active in drama and marching band. Like his
voice, his instrument is the baritone. Ethan enjoys advanced math
classes.
William Zitzmann - Motto Contributor & Guest Speaker
“Discover the World Through Science” was William’s co-winning
contribution to the motto contest as a 3rd grader. William won $ 100
and a $ 25 gift certificate to g. whilliker’s Toys and Books.
Brad Houska (UVA ‘20) “Pursue Progress” was Brad’s co-winning
motto contest entry. Brad is now a first year Rodman Scholar at UVA,
double majoring in Electrical Engineering and Physics and minoring
in Public Policy. He participates in the Mechatronics Club, Energy
Working Group, Track Club and is an Energy Researcher for the
Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. Brad received $ 100 for his
entry and also participated at the State Science and Engineering Fair.
Jenny Lopez (FHS junior) & Diana Mejia (FHS senior) - Youth Translators
Jenny and Diana translated major portions of the Sixth Grade
Science Performance Task (science/engineering project) packet
into Spanish to increase accessibility to parents in the county.
Jonathan Maxwell is a professional chess instructor and
author of “Blitz Theory.” An ardent believer in chess as an
academic tool, Mr. Maxwell established
himself as one of the premier coaches in the
New York City school system. He is a United
States Chess Federation Candidate Master and has multiple
academic programs in area schools, from KG—12. He is an official
USCF Tournament Director, and founded the USCF affiliated

KEYNOTE ADDRESS Mrs. Linda Suter, Engineer (retired) ,
Science Fair Advocate & Community Outreach
Linda was born and raised in Delaware County, PA just
outside of Chester, PA. She earned her BS in Engineering from
Widener University. Her career progressed from work as a
metallurgical engineering technician for Westinghouse Electric,
onto General Electric Aerospace as a system engineer for remote
sensing. After moving to Virginia, Linda worked for Lockheed
Martin and Northrop Grumman in various systems engineering roles in support of
the intelligence community.
In retirement, Linda has again moved in new directions. She is an avid
embroiderer, stitcher, and quilter. She serves as a VP of the Winchester Chapter of
the Embroidery Guild of America and is an active member of the Berryville Apple
Valley Needle Threaders. Her spare time is spent volunteering for Middleburg
Humane, an at risk Shelter in Marshall, VA, and, together with her husband, John,
as an advocate for the Fauquier County Regional Science & Engineering Fair.
Linda and John live on a small farm in Delaplane that they share with their dog,
Samantha, three indoor-outdoor cats, and a feral cat or so. Linda and John both
love to travel and experience the world. In addition to having visited almost all of
the US National Parks, they have been to Tanzania, Ukraine, Poland, Germany,
England, Scotland, Belgium, France and Morocco.

BOARD
The Combined Scientific Review Committee and the Institutional Review Board
reviews project proposals before research commences and again before competition
to ensure adherence to Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair)
Rules. These rules, as stipulated in the Intel ISEF International Rules and Guidelines
2016, protect the rights and welfare of the student researcher, human participants,
vertebrate animal subjects and ensure adherence to federal regulations and the use
of safe laboratory practices. In addition, they help to protect the environment and
determine eligibility for competition in the Intel ISEF.

Sharp Science Students Foundation was founded to help highly intelligent and
motivated students achieve the Educational and Technical
growth of which they are capable. The Foundation expects to

University of Southern California, all of which was funded through

“Adventures in Learning” program. Dr. Collins’ goal is to make a

Catlilli Games creates educational science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM) tabletop games targeted
for children in grades PK-12. Co-founded by a
neurobiologist and a civil engineer who transitioned to
careers in education, Catlilli Games offers STEM games from a variety of
fields. Our goal is to teach children complex STEM topics in a fun, engaging

David Fox is a math teacher at Warrenton Middle School. In his
spare time, he invents and designs family board games such as Get
a Life (published by R&R Games) and Zany Chain (published by
MindWare). He will be on hand during the Science &
Engineering Fair to demonstrate his games and share his

SPECIAL TO THE FAIR
These teachers, not typically associated with STEM topics, have invested a
considerable amount of time and energy to assist with Fair workshops to help guide
teachers and coordinators as they guide students in researching topics and building
presentation boards that flow logically and are aesthetically pleasing.
Marisa F. Pappas, Art Educator, Warrenton Middle School
Marisa Pappas received her undergraduate degree from
Massachusetts College of Art. Prior to her teaching career Mrs.
Pappas worked for over 20 years as a Fashion Apparel Engineer
and Designer. Throughout her fashion career Mrs. Pappas also
taught design courses at Newbury College and Endicott College
both in Massachusetts and at Marymount University. Having a
desire to teach younger students Mrs. Pappas went on to earn her
Master’s in Arts in Teaching from George Mason University. She
worked as an elementary art educator for four years before joining the staff at
Warrenton Middle. Outside the class room Mrs. Pappas sponsors Warrenton
Middle’s National Junior Art Honor Society, is co-sponsor for WMS Battle of the
Books and is Fauquier County’s Youth Art Month Coordinator. This past year she
was the nominee for the Blue Ridge Region Middle School Educator and was
named the 2015 Middle Division Art Educator of the Year by the Virginia Art
Education Association. Mrs. Pappas is also an avid painter having her works of art
displayed at the Shenandoah Valley Arts Center.
Mary Jo Sears, B.A, M.A.,M.S.- Mary Jo has been with
Fauquier County Public School since 1994. She has taught
English at Fauquier High School and is currently serving
her seventh year as one of two Library Media Specialists at
FHS. She loves researching and discovering new resources
to share with students. Outside of school she enjoys theatre,
music, reading, and planning vacations for her family.
Kathy Howard, Librarian/Teacher, Warrenton Middle
School.
Kathy Howard received her undergraduate degree in ele-
mentary education from High Point University in 1974 and
earned her Master of Education in School Librarianship
from Longwood University.
The national science, technology, engineering, and
math competition for U.S. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, the
Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science,
Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars), a program
of Society for Science & the Public, inspires and encourages
the nation's young scientists, engineers and innovators.
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair
(Intel ISEF), is the world’s largest international pre-college
science competition, providing an annual forum for more
than 1,600 high school students from over 70 countries,
regions, and territories to showcase their independent
research and compete for more than $4 million in awards.
VSSEF, Inc. is a non-profit organization designed to
support the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair.
