The Great Plains Confer- ence (made up of the UMC churches in Kansas and Nebraska) will be receiv- ing a new bishop in September of this year. That person will be elected by what is called a Jurisdictional Conference in July. Our Annual Conference elected clergy and laity delegates to attend this July event and to vote on how the bishops will be assigned within our jurisdiction. The U.S. is divided into jurisdictions - a grouping of neighboring states and then the states are divided into areas, which is the designation for the churches within a given Bishop’s control. Areas are usually organized by number of UMC members in any given area. Our current bishop, Scott Jones, will be assigned to another area in our jurisdiction and we will receive someone else as our bishop. While the local church does not have face-to-face contact with the bishop very often, we will want to be aware of the person who is elected as our bishop since that person will be in that office for possibly the next eight years and will be re- sponsible for assigning pastors to local churches, including Elkhorn Hills. Now there is also General Conference. This body is made up of delegates, clergy and laity, from the entire Church. The Conference convenes every four years and will meet this April in Portland, Oregon. The General Conference is the official governing body of the United Methodist Church across the globe so this is always a very international gathering. We Methodists have a Book of Discipline that is used as a guidebook for everything that we do in the local church; things like how to organize committees, the work of the pastor and procedures for ordination, plus some General Rules written by our denomina- tion’s founding father, John Wesley. If a change is to be made to this book, it has to be approved by the General Conference. If you wish you can stream the conference live every day to see what is happening. There are a few con- troversial issues to be discussed at the Conference concerning major changes to the Discipline. Some of the Conference will be very interesting to watch; some of it not so much. So that’s the lesson for today, fellow United Methodists. Hope you took good notes. There may be a test someday - you never know! Grace and peace, Nancy

NOTES FROM THE CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

Last month, Y.E.S. came and spoke to the congregation as well as the children's Sunday School classes. The kiddos learned a lot about their mission and ways they can help. They loved having Allison come speak and be able to answer their questions so they have a better understand-ing of what Y.E.S. provides for services. For February, the Children's Department has taken on the project of pro-viding homeless bags for Y.E.S. They are very much in need of these bags and what they provide to the individuals who need assistance. We will be assembling the bags in each classroom on February 14, along with the Good Samaritan lesson. We encourage you to join your children in their classes that day to help them with this project.

Register now or 2016-2017 Preschool and Parents’ Day Out! See Shauna or Ash-

ley for any questions you might have. You can visit the website for more informa-

tion and to print the registration form.

February 27, we will be having our Annual Preschool Dance. This years theme is

Luau! If you are interested in helping please contact Shauna or Ashley for more

information.

In January, the Preschool kiddos were able to enjoy a visit from Animal Encoun-

ters! They learned all about different animals and were able to hold and pet vari-

ous types! This is one of the children’s favorite field trips that they get to partake

in!

Next month we will be having the Dentist come for a visit! They will show the

kids how to properly clean their teeth and to have proper dental hygiene, all while

having fun!
