2016 FLORENCE TOWNSHIP COMMUNITY CALENDAR
Florence Township AnnuAl MunicipAl sTorMwATer inForMATion
Dear Residents and Business Owners: As you may be aware, the State of New Jersey requires all municipalities to distribute certain information each year relating to the protection of our water resources and stormwater management. This letter will give you a basic overview and information about what Florence Township does to promote water protection and stormwater management in our community. Florence Township has several ordinances that relate to stormwater management and protection of our water resources. Chapter 123 of the Township Code regulates Pet Waste, Littering, Improper Disposal of Waste, Wildlife Feeding, Yard Waste, Refuse Containers, and Illicit Connections to storm collection systems. Littering is unlawful on public and private lands and this includes scattering of handbills, circulars and other forms of advertisement. Trash, tires and other items are regarded as waste and should be in enclosed containers with tight fitting lids that prevent spillage. The feeding of unconfined wildlife such as Canadian Geese, migratory birds or other large numbers of wildlife is prohibited. Dense wildlife numbers in the state have contributed to concerns of feces polluting streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. Even pet waste should be cleaned up immediately from public and private lands and disposed of properly. Illicit connections to stormwater collection systems are another concern that contributes to a multitude of pollutants of our waterways. Some types of illicit connections include: sewer or gray water discharge, floor drains in contaminated areas, unprotected yard or roof drains, etc. Chapter 91-75 and its corresponding sections of the Township Code address design standards for construction and public and private storm drain inlet retrofitting. The state and the township require that new construction or land development applications meet a series of tests to verify that each new project conforms to the latest best management practices for stormwater management and water protection. In addition, storm drain inlets are required to be retrofitted any time a qualifying work takes place on or near the inlet. You may be familiar with inlet retrofitting because you can see the smaller size of the openings on the grate and back portion of the inlet components. This smaller opening acts to prevent trash and debris from entering the stormwater system and finding its way to our rivers, lake and streams. For more information on the municipal code, stormwater management, and water protection measures, please visit the Florence Township Website at www.florence-nj.gov and click on the link for Stormwater Management under the Documents tab on the left side of the page. Thank you for taking the time to read this information and for your concern for the environment.
I present the 2016 Florence Township Community Calendar. This calendar includes old photos of many of our historic buildings and sites as well as current photos of how things look today. I hope you enjoy the path down memory lane. I’d like to extend a special thank you to the Florence Township Fire Company #1 for their help with coordinating and soliciting our calendar sponsors. We are fortunate to have so many dedicated men and women serving our community. I also appreciate the young men of Roebling Boy Scout Troop 3 who distributed the calendar to every home in the community. Lastly, the calendar would not be possible without donations from our sponsors listed in the back of the publication. Each year, we have expanded the calendar to not only include township meetings but also many other programs sponsored during the year. Please show your support by attending the events, meetings and programs listed in the pages of the calendar. One of the strengths of our community is our volunteer organizations. I encourage you to get involved with their worthwhile endeavors. Because of their efforts, Florence Township is a better place to live. The revitalization and re-birth of the Route 130 Corridor and other economic development hubs in the township continue to move forward and Florence Township’s future is still full of potential. With the opening of Subaru, Express Scripts, Burlington Coat Factory corporate offices, Destination Maternity’s logistics business, Dollar Tree, and the start of the new Liberty Property Trust Development on Cedar Lane, we continue to attract quality companies and new employment to Florence Township. We are also pleased that Ready Pac foods has decided to remain in our community and expand their operations in the near future. In addition to the Route 130 Corridor, the former Marcella L. Duffy School on West Second Street is now fully occupied and serves as an example of revitalization of a historic building for senior affordable housing. A second revitalization project involved the conversion of the former Green Star Inn at 220 Foundry Street into six affordable housing units where families can afford a nice place to call home. As economic development projects progress, Florence Township remains committed to pursuing more commercial opportunities and expanding the strong business economic base in the community. Please stay tuned to our exciting news and information channels as they continue to grow and become a more efficient method of communication. I encourage you to sign-up for the Township Website updates, friend the Township of Florence on Facebook, sign-up for emergency notices through Nixel, or simply check out our television channel on Comcast Channel 19. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and the other information contained in the calendar. If you would like to be a sponsor in the 2017 Calendar or wish to include information in the next calendar, please e-mail [email protected] or [email protected]. It is has been my honor to serve you as Mayor. I wish you and your family good health, happiness, and much success in 2016. Sincerely,
Craig H. Wilkie, MayorCover Photo Description: Marcella L. Duffy School Apartments

The homes were owned by the RD Wood Company who began operating a pipe foundry on the adjacent property where DC Fabricators is now.
One of the mansions was the summer home of Richard D. Wood and the second mansion was the plant manager’s home. The plant manager’s home sat where the current playground is located.
