Melinda Krynen-Hill, MEd in Counselling Psychology candidate, Uni-
versity of Toronto (OISE), 2017; Master’s in Public Health specializing in
Health Promotion, University of Alberta, 2013. Melinda founded a unique consultancy practice supporting individuals to
better manage complex health conditions.
Melinda pursued training in the psychology field after organically developing a consultancy practice supporting individuals
with complex health conditions to cultivate skills and tools to self-regulate their challenging conditions. Her practice evolved
following her own experience with a complex health condition, where she aspired to create a resource and support for others
going through similar journeys. Melinda envisioned a practice that would supplement gaps in the current health care delivery
system and provide needed support and encouragement for those living with complex conditions. She credits the women in
her life for inspiring her to seek agency in decisions involving her health and for encouraging her to create a space for others to
empower themselves through illness.
More about her can be found in the Spring 2016 Cornerstone, on our SFC website. (Photo by Estatira Shirkhodaee)

MESSAGE FROM WCR GOVERNOR
RITA MACKENZIE
I visited the ECR Fall Meeting in October,
held together with the SFC Annual General
Meeting. It was lovely meeting so many
Soroptimist members of Eastern Canada. I
realized the importance of connecting the
East with the West and brought back a message to the
membership of Western Canada to visit clubs in the East
whenever possible. The SFC has strengthened Soroptimist
in Canada and I hope the trend continues as more and
more women become aware of our organization and all it
has to offer to our female population.

CONGRATULATIONS!
I would like to thank all Soroptimist Clubs that filled out the SFC forms asking for funding to help provide programs to young
women in their communities and to encourage more clubs to host programs and to apply for funding from SFC next year.
This year we have applications submitted by nine clubs. Most of these clubs are old hands at providing quality programs to girls
and women in their communities and, in doing so, strengthening ties to their communities and to the families, including the young
women and girls that attend those programs.
Soroptimist International Clubs in Canada that applied for funding this year:
1. SI Guelph - Dream It Be It DIBI.
2. SI Kawartha Lakes - Girls of Action and Leadership (GOAL)
3. SI Central Alberta - The Power of a Girl. (Mother/Daughter Conference)
4. SI Edmonton - "Be Brave" Empowerment Workshops.

TREASURER’S CORNER Balance Reporting - Balance Summary Report SHERYL HOPKINS, TREASURER
SOROPTIMIST FOUNDATION OF CANADA
Report Date: October 25,, 2016
The Soroptimist Foundation wishes to thank all the members and clubs who have donated to our Endowment Fund this fiscal year. It
is only due to the support of our faithful donors that we are able to maintain the programs that are supported by the Foundation. It
has been suggested and we agree that we would like to increase the number of women that we help with our Grants for Women’s
program but due to the financial atmosphere at present, we are reluctant to extend the number of grants, although it is agreed that
this would help to increase the brand name of the Soroptimist Foundation of Canada.
This past year we received $11,222.00 in donations from ECR members and clubs and $79,817.00 in donations from WCR members
and clubs. These donations are much appreciated.
The stewardship of our Investment Manager, Warwick Holland, and the generous support of all of our donors has helped to raise the
balance of our endowment fund to $1,710,357 this year from $1,674,019. This is an increase over the year of $36,338.00.
Thank you all very much for your continued support of the Soroptimist Foundation of Canada.

FROM THE DESK OF BJ GALLAGHER, CHAIR
Since the last Cornerstone, the Foundation Board has been very busy.
In July, we travelled to Orlando to attend the SIA Convention and while there, held an orientation meet-
ing.
This year, there will be changes to the SFC Board as our Secretary, Meta Flemke, SI Edmonton, and
Treasurer Sheryl Hopkins, SI Peterborough, will be stepping down on November 1 & 15, 2016 respectively. They will be
replaced on the board by Elizabeth Kitchen, SI Peterborough and Cyndy Roberts, SI Grand Erie. Sheryl and Meta have
both worked very hard for the foundation - Sheryl for four years and Meta for two. It is with much gratitude from the
remaining members of the Board that we see them go. We wish Sheryl and Meta success with their future endeavours
within the Soroptimist umbrella and in general.
Elizabeth Kitchen will take over the position of Treasurer and Cyndy Roberts will begin work on Club Grants and West-
ern Canada ‘Grants for Women’ Grants Manager. Anna Der will become Secretary and Aline will remain Eastern Canada
Grants for Women Manager and Cornerstone Editor and I will continue as Chair.
It should be noted that Aline and I will have completed our terms after the SFC AGM next year and therefore everyone
should be thinking about standing for a place on the SFC Board.
This year, the SFC AGM was held at Brantford, Ontario, along with the ECR Fall Area meeting. I consider it a great suc-
cess. 77 women attended the meeting and most stayed to take part in the SFC AGM. Club Grants were presented and it
was a pleasure to hand out awards of $1000 each to SI Guelph and SI Kawartha Lakes. Six WCR clubs also won Club
Awards of $1000 each. Read about them in this issue of Cornerstone. Several Clubs also received star awards for club giv-
ing. Thank you!
It was a pleasure to have the company of SIA President RoseMary Reid as well as WCR Governor Rita MacKenzie and
ECR Governor Dr. Jean Skillman and her Board. And Margaret Wooton, SI Courtenay who represented WCR attendees.
I would also like to say a big thank you to Tanna Edwards and Janet Simms-Baldwin for volunteering to have a look at
the SFC Bylaws and see if and where they need updating.
Aline put together a Power Point presentation on the history of SFC. It was well-received. Many had not heard much
about SFC’s history and it was a great opportunity to do a bit of PR and Education. Thank you to the SFC History Com-
mittee, under the chair of Janet Simms-Baldwin.
Since 1982, SFC has donated $910,000 to Grants for Women.
The weekend was a great success and I would like to extend our appreciation to SI Grand Erie Club and Hannalore
Neiman for all of her organizational skills, to Governor Jean Skillman for allowing SFC to share their ECR event, SIA
President RoseMary Reid for graciously attending the whole event, WCR Governor Rita MacKenzie for taking time out
of her busy schedule to travel across Canada to join us and all of the SI Clubs that sent representative and all of the SI
Member who stayed for the SFC AGM.
Please remember that it is with your help that Soroptimist Foundation of Canada is able to do the work that we do and
can remain strong and viable.
Please remember to make Soroptimist Foundation of Canada your charity of choice.

MESSAGE FROM ROSEMARY REID, SIA 2015-2016 PRESIDENT
It was a real pleasure for me to attend the Eastern Canada Region’s Fall meeting and the So-
roptimist Foundation of Canada’s Annual General Meeting as President of Soroptimist In-
ternational of the Americas. Congratulations to both Boards for the great work that you do
on behalf of women and girls.
As Soroptimists, we work to help women and girls make their big dreams of a better life
come true. Each and every day, Soroptimist clubs throughout the world help women and
girls overcome barriers that prevent them from living their dreams.
We helped countless women and girls improve their lives and have provided them with the potential of
fulfilling their dreams. In 2015-2016, 3,955 eligible women applied for the Live Your Dream (LYD) award.
1,355 women received LYD cash awards. So think about the more than 2600 eligible women who applied
for the Live Your Dream (LYD) award throughout our Federation who did not receive funding. Let’s work
to increase our collective impact and do more to transform lives of more women by providing more LYD
cash awards at the local and regional levels.
Last year, more than 600 clubs throughout our federation took part in the next big goal survey. They told us
they want all clubs in our federation to focus on investing in the dreams of women and girls through access
to education by 2031. This is just the first step in building our Soroptimist future.
As your President, I look forward to hearing the results of your club’s further conversations about how to
achieve our next big goal. Plan for these conversations, if they haven’t already taken place, and provide
your input to headquarters by the end of December. Achieving our next big goal on behalf of the women
and girls we serve will require the energy, passion, commitment and focus of every single member.
Let’s dream big! Use your time and resources to invest in the dream we have for women and girls which
builds into our federation’s dream - to increase our impact together.
In Soroptimist friendship,
RoseMary
RoseMary Reid
2016-2017 SIA President

OLD CLUB REVIVED
The original Soroptimist Club of London was chartered in 1936 and served the community for many years until the club
disbanded in the early 90’s. About 60 years ago, the club hosted Eleanor Roosevelt - this was one of the many highlights.
Building on this great history, 14 dedicated women decided to give a new start to the work of Soroptimist in London. SI
London was chartered in September 2014. Many fellow Soroptimist of ECR region attended the celebration. RoseMary
Reid, President of SIA, was one of the celebrants.
Since then, the club has been busy boosting its ranks with new members and getting the word out in the community.
Although four members have not continued, we have gained seven new members during the last two years. The club
now has 17 active members who continuously try to improve the lives of women and girls.
We keep a strong bond with our Live Your Dream Award winners; one has recently joined our club. One of our high-
lights is Lunafest, a festival of short films for women, where the Live Your Dream award is presented to the winner and
we offer our community partners, who work for the benefit of women and girls, the opportunity to present their work.
We are looking forward to a steady growth in serving our community, and improving the lives of women and girls.
