I hope that you are looking toward 2016 with hope and faith. I recognize that we live in a world that struggles to hope, and if we are honest, we too struggle to hope at mes. There is so much brokenness in our families, our community, and in our world. Yet, the Bible speaks of faith, hope, and love remain- ing, even when all else falls away (1 Cor. 13). Faith—”the assurance of things hoped for, and the convicon of things not seen”— invites us to see God’s promise as a promise coming into reality (Hebrews 11). In reading Hebrews 11, I recognized something that had not stuck out to me in previous readings. Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something beer so that they would not, without us, be made perfect. Hebrews 11:39-40 What is Hebrews saying? First, this comes aer a long list of saints commended for their faith. This list includes Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Rahab, just to name a few. Each of them had faith that God was doing something greater than what they could see. What greater thing is God doing in our midst at Salem that invites us & challenges us to trust beyond what we know or see? Secondly, there is an interesng nuance in the verses above. God’s promise is not only for the faithful of long ago, but a constant promise for us and for generaons to come. Their longing for God’s promise is connected to our longing. Their hope is connected to our hope. Don’t forget, the community of faith in Hebrews before these verse had already reminded one another “not to neglect in meeng togeth- er” (Hebrews 10). We need one another! Each and every person is a child of God, uniquely gied for the glory of God and the building up of the Body of Christ. Let me say it again…we need one another! God has uniquely drawn us together at Sa- lem UMC, and 2016 has great promise. This Winter and early Spring, we will be ex- ploring our unique God-given gis. We will also ask you to prayerfully consider how you are being called and empowered to offer your God-given gis. As we prepare for this journey, please pray! God is always listening and speaking. The monthly newsletter of Salem United Methodist Church — Clarksville, Tennessee

Greengs Salem UMC,

Happy New Year! I hope that you are looking toward 2016 with hope and faith. I

recognize that we live in a world that struggles to hope, and if we are honest, we

too struggle to hope at mes. There is so much brokenness in our families, our

community, and in our world. Yet, the Bible speaks of faith, hope, and love remain-

ing, even when all else falls away (1 Cor. 13). Faith—”the assurance of things hoped

for, and the convicon of things not seen”— invites us to see God’s promise as a

promise coming into reality (Hebrews 11). In reading Hebrews 11, I recognized

something that had not stuck out to me in previous readings.

Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was

promised, since God had provided something beer so that they would not, without

us, be made perfect. Hebrews 11:39-40

What is Hebrews saying? First, this comes a9er a long list of saints commended for

their faith. This list includes Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Rahab, just to name

a few. Each of them had faith that God was doing something greater than what

they could see. What greater thing is God doing in our midst at Salem that invites

us & challenges us to trust beyond what we know or see?

Secondly, there is an interesng nuance in the verses above. God’s promise is not

only for the faithful of long ago, but a constant promise for us and for generaons

to come. Their longing for God’s promise is connected to our longing. Their hope is

connected to our hope. Don’t forget, the community of faith in Hebrews before

these verse had already reminded one another “not to neglect in meeng togeth-

er” (Hebrews 10). We need one another! Each and every person is a child of God,

uniquely gi9ed for the glory of God and the building up of the Body of Christ. Let

me say it again…we need one another! God has uniquely drawn us together at Sa-

lem UMC, and 2016 has great promise. This Winter and early Spring, we will be ex-

ploring our unique God-given gi9s. We will also ask you to prayerfully consider how

you are being called and empowered to offer your God-given gi9s.

As we prepare for this journey, please pray! God is always listening and speaking.
