A BUTEIFUL HOLIDAY SPOT
Before the days of cheap air travel, the Isle ofBute was Glasgow's holiday playground withthe bustling wee town of Rothesay at its hub. Itis much quieter now but the attractions ofgreat scenery, easy walks and cycling routesremain along with the jewel in the crown –Mount Stuart.
Mount Stuart Special OfferWe are delighted to announce the MountStuart Trust has agreed to provide free entry tothe house for any Jazz Festival visitor with aWeekend Rover or a Day ticket.
This stunning Gothic Revival home is about fivemiles south of Rothesay, was constructed bythe 3rd Marquess of Bute at the end of the 19thcentury and is accessible by bus.
Rothesay AttractionsYou can't fail to see magnificent RothesayCastle which dates from the early 13th centuryand is of unusual circular design. Scottishroyalty stayed here at various times.
In Stuart Street behind the castle is the ButeMuseum which charts the island's history fromMesolithic and Neolithic to the present day.
On the waterfront you will find The DiscoveryCentre which includes Tourist Information, Thefamed Victorian Toilets and the Putting Greenand Gardens – the latter were instrumental inthe town winning top prize in last year'sBeautiful Scotland awards.
Further AfieldBus services can take you to Rhubodach onBute and Colintraive a five minutes ferry tripaway in the north, Ettrick Bay in the west andKilchattan Bay to the south while cyclists willfind the east coast roads are generally flat.
Ascog Hall Fernery about three miles south ofRothesay is worth a visit with its beautifullyrestored Victorian fernery together with threeacres of conventional gardens and a verypeaceful spot on the southern end of Bute is StBlane's Chapel, a 12th century ruin and thebirth place of Christianity on the island.
Leisure ActivitiesBute has three golf courses – the largest is the18 hole Rothesay Golf Club above the town;the 13 hole Port Bannatyne course has superbviews over the Kyles of Bute to the Cowal hillsand Bute Golf Club's nine hole course atKingarth takes in a magnificent vista of theArran mountains.
For fishermen, the inland Loch Fad, (see picturebelow) which has now re-opened, hosts manycompetitions during the year and Loch Quien isanother favoured spot, together with miles ofeasily accessible coastline.
Bute is magical for horse riding and there aretwo stables – the Ardbrannan Riding Centre onthe southern outskirts of Rothesay and theKingarth Trekking Centre which is about fiveminutes ride from the long sandy beach atKilchattan Bay.

Bute may represent only a tiny part of theBritish Isles but it has a rich cultural historydating back to 7,000 BC and an immensediversity of flora and fauna which haveprovided a wealth of exhibits for a littlegem of a museum in Stuart Street, behindRothesay Castle.
The independently run Bute Museum, which opens Monday to Saturday from10.30 am to 3.30 pm and on Sundays from1.30 pm to 3.30 pm, is an ideal place to
immerse yourself for a few hours in theisland's often surprising past taking in ar-chaeology from the Neolithic, Bronze andIron Ages, the Viking era and the island'srecent industrial past which has all butdisappeared from today's landscape.
Half the Museum is devoted to geology –a fault line runs through the middle of theisland – plants, animals and birds. It is agreat place for youngsters as many casesare at low level and a even a small childcan look straight in at steamer models orseashore exhibits.
Last year a film crew from Canada's Take 5Productions spent a whole day with themuseum filming for a factual programmebehind a new series 'The Vikings' andamong other things looked at the famousHostage stone, a Viking sword hilt and amore recently discovered silver ingotwhich came from the Scalpsie area.
A prize exhibit dates from an excavationon neighbouring Inchmarnock when theremains of a woman, named as 'Queen ofthe Inch' were discovered along with abeautiful jet spacer-plate necklace buriedwith her. A facial reconstruction has beencreated from the re-excavated skull of the'Queen' and the necklace restrung, thecompleted display being unveiled by LordRobert Smith, owner of Inchmarnock in2008.
Bute Museum Library was first establishedin 1907 and moved to its current home in1926. The archive has grown massivelyover the years and there are evengenealogical records including severalfamily trees relevant to local families

Suave, dapper, dare we say heartthrob – theIsle of Wight's Richard White is one of these ormore to his many fans who will be delighted tosee him north of the border with his Fivers at
Rothesay once again.
Regarded as one of Britain's outstanding reeds men, Richardis a multi instrumentalist playing alto and bass saxophones, clarinet and bass clarinet and piano, cutting his teeth in pubsand wine bars down south with the Festival's own Tim Saulamongst others.
Over the last 35 years he has honed his skills, notably fillingan absent space at a reunion of the original TemperanceSeven and playing in the likes of Rico Tomasso’s Rico’sRiverboat Shufflers, Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band, Beryl Bryden’sBudapest B(l)ooze Band and the Bryan Ferry Jazz Orchestra.
Richard White's Fivers play in a style loosely based on JimmieNoone's Apex Club Orchestra and as well as the gigs listedhere, he will play his usual prominent part in Saturday's Paradethrough the streets of Rothesay.
Expect his musical recipes to be drawn from the sweetest and hottest sources and piquantlyflavoured with suggestions of theaforementioned Jimmy Noone, the originalTemperance Seven and worthy predecessors.
The ingredients listed are guaranteed to intrigue, amuse and satisfy the most jaded of palates.

The stand out man in the sharp suit, twotone shoes and trilby is guitarist AnthonyPurdy who is a familiar face in pubs andclubs around the Blyth area in north eastEngland where he lives.
“I have been playing guitar from the age of15,” says Anthony. “ Music has alwaysbeen my passion, but it is the love andadmiration of the music from the 1930s,40s and 50s that inspired me to write andperform in that genre becoming AnthPurdy’s Swing Jazz Guitar Act.”These eras produced some of the greatestmusic ever written by some of the bestmusicians and Anth Purdy’s Swing JazzGuitar captures the sounds and styles tobring this wonderful music back to life. All original guitar instrumentals in the stylesranging from Swing, Western Swing, JumpJive, Gypsy Jazz and the sounds of the 50’s.
A unique act with itsroots in the early guitargreats. A man with aguitar, harmonica anddrum kit – it can onlybe Mike Whellans, the one-man bluesband who has takenhis inspiration fromDoctor IsaiahRoss, Jesse Fullerand Tony 'Duster'Bennett.
He started outas a 13-year-oldhaving found his
late father's drum kit in theloft and within a year was playing in dancebands. In the rock'n'roll era he got a guitar andformed The Castle Kings and on a memorablenight in the Borders playing as a support groupfor The Merseybeats, he shook the hand of thethen unknown John Lennon.
Mike turned professional in 1969 and went ontour with the Shetland fiddler Aly Bain in the early'70s. In the '80s and '90s he lived in Denmark, touring Scandinavia, Germany, Holland, Belgiumas well as the UK but is now back in Scotlandand recognised as one of the masters of the rareand specialised one-man blues band forms.Fellow professionals admire his inimitable styleon 6 and 12 string guitars, his mastery of themouth harp, vocals, show stopping 'mouthpercussion' and where it all started – his drumkit.
You've got to see it to believe it.

Described by the late Humphrey Lyttletonas “totally, professional, one of the verybest in the business,” The Savannah JazzBand is the cream of Yorkshire exports andhas a strong connection with Bute, theirlatest CD being a recording of their 2014Festival performance. The band's driving and exciting New Orle-ans style satisfies listeners and dancersalike, attracting large audiences whereverthey play so if they are on your schedule of'must see' performers make sure you ar-rive at the venue in plenty of time.
Formed in 1979, plenty of Yorkshire gritand hard graft has got them where theyare today – in demand all over the UK,Europe and across the pond in Canada andAmerica. The band's music is inspired by the legen-dary Ken Colyer and the Savannah styleassures a perfect blend of musicianship, wonderful cohesion, jazz craft and musicalvalues with an ability to cater for Dixielandas well as New Orleans tastes.Over the years they have enjoyed playingwith some very fine and talented musi-cians, and these days there is a constantstream of artists queuing up to guest with
this highly talented sextet. The band has a varied and ever changingprogramme and is constantly adding newnumbers to their extremely wide reper-toire. The Savannah Jazz Band is neverpredictable!

Jazz abounds with characters and one thing isa certainty, Penman's Jazzmen featuring a revi-talised line-up this year, is full of them.A firm Festival favourite, they performed in frontof a huge congregation at last year's Jazz PraiseService at the United Church of Bute whenduring an extended exaltation to the Lord a bandmember who will remain anonymous was heardto remark 'how many more ….. verses are there?'Core members of this naughty but nice band goback to 1959 when they came together as TheGeorge Penman Jazzmen under the lateGeorge Penman with a first engagement atLenzie Town Hall. Since his death seven yearsago they have continued to play their popularbrand of Trad Jazz all over Scotland.Until a week before Christmas last year theywere regulars at the King Tut's Wah Wah Hut inGlasgow – an enjoyable gig which lasted sevenand a half years – and for their fans Buteprovides an opportunity to see and listen to themonce more.Personnel: John Siton, David Fimister, BillMullen, Duncan Nairn, George Howden trb,Harald Vox bjo.

Glasgow based trumpeter, Robert Hendersonhas been into music for as long as he canremember and playing since he was a
youngster in short trousers - his greatest early influencebeing his father who introduced him to jazz as well asclassical music.
Now some 35 years later he is a much in demand highlycreative trumpeter whom reviewers have variouslydescribed as being “possessed by the spirit of jazz,” and“wired to the moon!”
His first performance was at a school concert in St Helier onJersey playing baritone horn while these days he is a longterm member of A Band Called Quinn in which he plays
keyboards as well as trumpet.
Robert's jazz favourites include Ellington,Basie, Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald, and atRothesay this year, he will be playingalongside Chris Clark and Olive Ennemoser aswell as guesting with the Tim Saul Sextet.

If you have purchased a rover ticket or an all day ticket you can gain free entry to the nineteenth-century neo-gothic Mount Stuart five miles south of Rothesay – an impressive enough mansionfrom the outside but virtually guaranteed to blow you away with its lavish furnishings once youstep inside.Created by the 3rd Marquess of Bute this red sandstone palace is one of the most technologicallyadvanced houses of its age. It is believed to be the first in the world to have a heated indoorswimming pool, the first in Scotland to be purpose built with electric light, central heating, atelephone system and passenger lift, most of which are still in use today.Arguably the finest house to emerge from the Gothic Revival, the magnificent 80 foot high marblehall is constructed from rare Italian and Sicilian marble and alabaster. White Carrara marble linesthe walls of the spectacular chapel, indeed Mount Stuart is said to contain more marble than anyother building in the British Isles. The stunning vaulted ceiling of the marble hall captures themes from astrology and astronomy –'the stars in their courses' are mapped above as well as a remarkable stained glass windowdepicting the signs of the zodiac.Impressive gardens, each set against a backdrop of the Firth of Clyde, are something to behold.Wildflower meadows and a distinctly west coast shoreline wilderness contrast with the moreformal beauty of the lawns and gardens while the wooded areas provide shelter for drifts ofdaffodils followed by carpets of bluebells.
Don't forget to take your Jazz festival ticket with you to gain free entry.

More than 200 people from the Isle of Jazz andbeyond assembled at Rothesay's Trinity Churchon 9th December 2015, to pay tribute to JennyBrown, dubbed Queen of the Isle of Bute JazzFestival, who died at the age of 88. Jenny wasborn in the same street in Cardiff's Tiger Bay asShirley Bassey, moved to Bute when she was sixand was a staunch supporter of the Festival, founded by the late Phil Mason in 1988.
One of Rothesay’s great characters, Jenny loved to singand dance and in May 2015, just before the Festival, discharged herself from hospital so that she could playher traditional role as Grand Parade Marshal at theannual Brolly Parade, through the streets of Rothesay. The cover photograph of this programme shows Jennyleading the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival Parade in 2012.
The Rev. Drew Barrie described Jenny as an“indomitable spirit who brought great joy wherevershe went,” adding she encapsulated the spirit of theJazz Festival being vibrant, colourful, uplifting and fun.
Music played a huge part in Jenny's life. She adoredthe New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival which shefirst visited more than 40 years ago. She became aregular and performed with many top of the bill starsand her extrovert personality won her many friends onthe other side of the pond. Americans were intriguedby the black woman with the Scottish accent and shehad the honour of being the first woman to become a Grand Marshal in the New Orleans jazzparade.
Jenny was also retained for many a season by a hotel in Majorca catering exclusively for Germansand she learnt German in order that she could sing their favourite jazz numbers in their nativetongue. As well as giving unstinting support to jazz on Bute, she was always keen to back any newFestivals and to share her considerable organising experience. Less well known was her majorcommitment to charities, both local and international.
Following interment, a reception at Rothesay's Victoria Hotel was a lively affair just as Jenny wouldhave wanted it, with Tim Saul (keyboards and vocals), Ray Bruce (banjo), Paul McKay (bass), DavidGray (drums), Robin Dow (trombone) and John Blick (cornet) playing a selection of Jenny’s belovedjazz numbers in her singing repertoire.
It was an especially fitting tribute, since most musicians performing were members of the late PhilMason’s Jazz Friends band, who supported Jenny for many years in her regular appearances at theannual Isle of Bute Jazz Festival.
