Student Massage Clinic

Tuition for Wholistic Massage Students Only: $75 (per 5 clinic sessions)

Date: Friday, 6/3 (Mandatory Clinic Orientation) Time: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Prerequisite: Therapeutic Massage (MAS-200) Required: holster and lotion

Description: This supervised massage clinic is open to the community. Students run the clinic as if it were their own massage practice, working with multiple clients with different needs. The students will expand their massage skills; learning room setup, time management, client intakes and SOAP notes in a fast paced environment that simulates a busy massage practice.

*More information will be provided and all dates will be confirmed during the Mandatory Clinic Orientation on 6/3/16.*

This hands-on course will examine the history of herbal medicine, herbal materia medica for 35 herbs, herbal preparations for both fresh and dried plant material, herbal energetics from a Western and Eastern perspective, herbal actions, chemical constituents, legalities of herbal medicine, herbal tastes, and hands-on therapeutic applications.

ONLINE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

To register for a course, click on "Student Portal" on the Lourdes Institute website at www.LourdesInstitute.org or the direct link is: https://secure.webconnectgradpro.com/lourdesinstitute/.

To register for a course, click on: "Classes", "Course Registration", then the bottom right hand box,

"Find & Select Course". Scroll through the courses and add the course (s) of your choice. Once added, you will receive an email confirming your pending registration status and once it is

approved by the office, it will be confirmed and placed in the "Current Courses" location. Depending on the volume, the approval process can take a few business days to complete. Since you must register for a course at least one week prior to the start date of the class, online reg-

istration will not be available for a course after that time period. One week prior to the first day of class, you will receive a registration confirmation email. If the enrollment is low, a class may get canceled one week prior to the first day of class. If you have an outstanding balance from a previous semester, you will not be able to register until it

has been satisfied.

It’s a method of Chinese Bodywork that utilizes soft tissue manipulation, acupoints, and structural realignment methods to lessen or alleviate a wide variety of musculoskeletal and internal organ disorders. This class instructs on how and where to use these hand techniques and what affect they have on underlying tissue.

Required Texts: The Ayurveda Encyclopedia; Ayurveda Binder Description: This elective will introduce the student to the fundamentals of Ayurveda. It will look at the 5,000 year-old history & philosophy. Students will explore the 5-element theory and the 3 doshas. Also included: strategies for healthy digestion, purification techniques, sensory modulation, and Vedic chanting and toming for health and well being.

Biomechanics of Running Tuition: $200

Dates: Saturdays, 5/21, 6/11, 7/16 and 8/6 Time: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Hours: 16 Instructor: Tracy Peal Required Materials: Notebooks and writing utensils; Running gear (appropriate shoes and clothing) Description: Running is a skill that requires both understanding and specific application. Students will be introduced to the history and development of human movement analysis, the elemental principles of the gait cycle and how these have shaped our impressions of how we should run. We will then proceed to the hands-on evaluation and revision of each student's stride efficiency, using motion-capture video to breakdown running form.

They will learn how to apply pressure to the reflex points on the feet to alleviate energy blocks, toxic deposits, pain, and stress. Basic anatomy is included since the reflex points correlate to every organ, gland, and system in the body. Students will also learn protocols for healing with intention and attention, the art of foot reading, and providing professional client-centered sessions.

Assessment Techniques and Treatment Strategies Tuition: $300

Hours: 24 Instructor: Xavier Harvey Prerequisites: Therapeutic Massage, S&F I and II, Palpation & Kinesiology and Specialized Massage Techniques Required Materials: Linens; Males: sports shorts; Females: sports shorts and sports bra Description: This course will hone in on many skills briefly touched on in Palpation, Kinesiology and Deep Tissue. The course will discuss “normal” range of motion and learn how to assess joint, muscle/myofascial, ligament, tendon, and/or swelling dysfunctions. We will also demonstrate common spring tests, range of motion tests, and orthopedic assessment tests. Students will analyze different treatment strategies that will address the dysfunction that was uncovered with tools that are already in their tool belts (i.e. Therapeutic Massage, Myofascial I, Deep Tissue, etc).

Dates: Saturdays, 6/4, 6/11, 6/18 Time: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Group Instructional Hours: 12 Active Teaching Hours: 5 Instructor Feedback/Mentoring Hours: 3 Observations/Assisting/Assigned Homework Hours: 10 Total Hours: 30 Instructors: Barbara Moeller and/or Nita Spielberg Description: Three group classes will address the needs and continued growth of seasoned teachers; further support will be provided in creative lesson planning, content enhancement, and sequencing techniques. Participants will be scheduled to teach three hours in a small group setting and two hours in an individual setting. Practicum teachers will provide feedback and mentoring throughout the practicum process. In order to fulfill the requirements of Yoga Alliance, your breakdown of hours consist of: group instructional, active teaching, instructor feedback/mentoring, and observations/assisting/assigned homework totaling 30 hours. Yoga Nidra Training - Level II Tuition: $100

Hours: 8 Instructor: Barbara Moeller Prerequisite: Yoga Nidra Training - Level I Description: An overview of the concepts and techniques of Level I training will be reviewed and discussed. The focus of Level II training will be the study of working with groups/individuals as well as course development of a 4 week series for a community program. Strategies that will be incorporated include partner practice and collaboration in lesson design and implementation. The instructor will also present and model new scripts for yoga nidra practice. Please bring your Yoga Nidra - Level I binder with you for this training.

Teaching Yoga For Special Populations Tuition: $60

Hours: 4 Instructor: Michelle Carlino Description: This advanced training will focus on yoga techniques, methodology, and modifications to assist specialized populations dealing with different challenges. Background data as well as experiential study and partner practice will support instruction for clients suffering from multiple sclerosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain, chronic fatigue, and other auto immune challenges. This professional training will include: working with students dealing with these issues, breathing and meditation techniques for relaxation and stress reduction, and designing and executing a lesson plan for a specific population.

Introduction to Kundalini Yoga for Teachers Tuition: $60

Hours: 4 Instructor: Michelle Carlino Description: Kundalini Yoga, brought to the west by Yogi Bhajan, is a powerful technique for healing and transformation. Designed specifically for householders, Kundalini Yoga produces fast and effective results. This training will include: energetic kryias to raise Kundalini (life force within) resulting in a stronger nervous system and hormonal balance, meditation to improve mental concentration and sharpen awareness, learning kryias for various h e a l t h p r o b l e m s , reduction of stress, and increased relaxation and memory, and chanting of ancient sounds to bring the body to balance.

Hours: 3 Instructor: Nita Spielberg Description: This exciting new program will assist teachers in structuring a yoga class for athletes and sports minded individuals. Many of the key elements of a successful athlete will be supported in asana and vinyasa flow; including flexibility of the joints, the strengthening of major muscle groups, building endurance, and stamina as well as enhancing focus and concentration. Often times, athletes place

considerable stress on their bodies and a well-rounded yoga program can be an excellent asset to their sports performance and overall health.

Yoga Core Conditioning Tuition: $60

Date: Sunday, 6/26 Time: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Hours: 4 Instructor: Nita Spielberg Description: This brand new program is designed for teachers who wish to place a greater emphasis on the core of the body during a yoga class. The misconception that the abdominal muscles are what solely make up the core will be examined through asana and vinyasa flow. Understanding alignment and proper positioning of the pelvic floor will strengthen the student’s core, as well as, lessen some problematic postural imbalances. This class will be exciting and fun-filled!

Assisting Techniques - Level II Tuition: $60

Date: Sunday, 7/10 Time: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Hours: 4 Instructor: Michelle Carlino Description: This class will be a continuation of basic Assisting Techniques Level I, though it is not required as a prerequisite. Proper assisting results in creating optimal alignment for asana maximizing the flow of prana. This flow is part of the highest goal of yoga. When the body is aligned properly, the possibility of injury is prevented and a practitioner is brought into a deeper experience and flow. Postures will be broken down and simple, effective techniques will be individualized for each pose. Principles of alignment and anatomy will be interwoven through each asana.

Come enjoy a fun day of yoga poses and breath work to cleanse and purify the body on all levels. Specific poses will be sequenced to maximize opening and releasing from deep within the tissues of the body. Energizing breath work to increase metabolism and release toxins will be incorporated. Students will be guided into asana and pranayama for deep cellular restoration and relaxation. Fresh juices will be included to support the detoxifying process. Some preparatory work will be suggested for participants prior to the class for maximum benefit.

Launching Your Yoga Career: Professional Strategies for Yoga Teachers Tuition: $45

Hours: 3 Instructor: Elizabeth Monaghan Description: In recent years, yoga has blossomed into a lucrative mode of employment. According to a 2015 CNN Money Report, a yoga instructor was listed on the top 100 careers at number 10! In this workshop, participants will learn effective ways to establish themselves in the yoga community by creating a functional and professional yoga resume highlighting skills and integrity, searching for teaching opportunities, developing marketing strategies that target a relevant audience, determining methods on how to obtain appropriate credentials and networking with other instructors in your respective geographical areas. Participants are asked to bring a copy of their resume and/or portfolio for review. This course is appropriate for YTT 200 students.

Using Yoga Support Items for a More Authentic and Enjoyable Experience Tuition: $60

Date: Sunday, 7/31 Time: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Hours: 4 Instructor: Elizabeth Monaghan Description: Yoga asanas, described by Patanjali, unites the multiple beings of the individual. As we grow in this experience, it is not unusual to encounter road blocks along the way. No one person is like the other when it comes to achieving individual goals. Each yogi must honor and respect their limitations and they must be willing to maximize their yoga experience, at times with the assistance of yoga support. Blocks, blankets, and straps are tools often used to help assist in the achievement of fluid movement and peaceful stillness; especially when the asana/posture may have presented itself inaccessible by conventional means. Participants will learn to appreciate the value of yoga support items in habitual asanas and also use them to evolve into more challenging postures. This course is appropriate for YTT 200 students.

Knees and Hips in Asana Tuition: $60

Date: Sunday, 8/7 Time: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Hours: 4 Instructor: Michelle Carlino Description: The connection between hips and knees

in asana can create stability or imbalance. This course will explore the delicate structure of the knee joint and how it is best supported within the yoga practice. Its alignment with the hips will be analyzed for maximum stabilization result ing in more freedom and opening of the lower half of the

body. This base support brings forth a flow of energy that prevents injury and creates more expansion through the upper torso. The anatomy of these areas will be briefly reviewed and structurally applied for maximum support and safety of each asana.

Michelle Carlino, BA, E-RYT500: (Assisting Techniques - Level II, Day of Purification, Introduction to Kundalini Yoga for Teachers, Knees and Hips in Asana, Teaching Yoga For Special Populations)

Michelle has been studying multiple styles of yoga since 1980 and has been teaching since 1987. She is certified in Hatha, Kripalu, Anusara, Christian,

Kundalini, Prana Yoga, Gentle Yoga and Yoga for Cancer/Cardiac patients. She has done extensive studies in therapeutic yoga and specializes in working with special needs populations, including clients with Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, brain injuries, visually impaired and back pain. Michelle is certified as a Foot Reflexologist, Tai Chi Chih instructor, chair massage therapist and a Reiki Master level. She has been an Assistant Director of the Lourdes 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program since 2002.

Ralph Casciato, LMT, Medical Massage: (Massage Clinic Supervisor)

Ralph is a 2006 graduate of Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies and is a NJ licensed massage therapist. He is certified in medical massage and maintains a private practice in Merchantville, specializing in Deep Tissue, Hot Stone, and Seated Chair Massage.

Corinne A. Corcoran, Ed.D., M.Ed, AAEd, NCBTMB, AMTA, LMT: (The Science of Ayurveda, Introduction to Foot Reflexology and Foot Readings)

Corinne is certified in massage, Ayurveda, Reiki, Vibrational Healing, and Applied Kinesiology. She is certified by The American Reflexology Certification Board in both foot and hand reflexology. ACARET has approved her as an instructor of reflexology. She is a member of AMTA and The Reflexology Association of America. Corinne is the author of My Forever Home: A Child’s First Book of Yoga. With a

doctorate from Temple University, she has enjoyed teaching at Lourdes Institute for over twenty years.

Monica DeVaughn-Nobling, NCBTMB, LMT: (Business/Marketing/Law)

Monica is a graduate of Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies and holds a national certification and NJ State license in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Currently managing a private practice, Monica also enjoys teaching the Business Management course at Lourdes Institute.

Susan DiGregorio, NCBTMB: (Pregnancy Massage, Scalp/Face-Hand/Foot Massage)

Sue is a graduate of Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies, specializing in Therapeutic, Deep Tissue, Myofascial, Pregnancy and Infant Massage, as well as Foot Reflexology. She has maintained a private practice for 9 years. She is an instructor for the massage and reflexology programs at Lourdes Institute. David A. Egan, BS, CSCS: (Advanced Back, Legs, Neck, Shoulder and Arm Strategies; Isolated Stretching Techniques)

David earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from Temple University. After graduation he worked in a physical therapy setting for nine years, overseeing patient exercise programs. During that time, David returned to school for a certification in massage therapy, but he found one of his true passions when he was introduced to Active Isolated Stretching (AIS). David immediately realized the many benefits of AIS and has been using it in his practice and teaching it for more than 15 years. David has been an instructor at LIWS since 1996 teaching Environmental Management, Active Isolated Stretching, and multiple continuing education courses. Andrea Finley, NCMT, LMT: (Clinic Supervisor)

Andrea is a graduate of the Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies. She is a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and student of the Neurosomatic Educators, LLC in Clearwater, Florida. In addition to her role as a core instructor for the Institute, she currently maintains a private practice in Swedesboro, New Jersey focusing on chronic pain conditions. Xavier is a NJ licensed massage, bodywork, and somatic therapist. His passion and commitment to the health & wellness industry is unparalleled with consulting, lecturing, teaching, and two practices. He is certified in over 20 modalities and has been awarded Full Instructor status from the Universal Healing Tao System under

Grandmaster Mantak Chia. His unique brand of bodywork is a perfect blending of all the modalities that he is trained in and a hybrid of Eastern & Western Medical Bodywork Theory & Application. He does not put anyone’s signs and symptoms into a box, applying a cookie cutter approach to massage/bodywork. He assesses, finds the root cause, and applies the appropriate techniques to alleviate the presenting dysfunction whether physical or energetic.

Barbara Moeller, MA, E-RYT500: (Yoga Nidra Training II, Yoga Practicum)

Barbara is the Director of the 200 and 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training at Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies. She has been an avid practitioner of yoga and meditation since 1973 and has been teaching for over 32 years. She has received extensive training in multiple styles of yoga and is certified in Classical Hatha, Kripalu, Christian Yoga, Ashtanga, Yoga Nidra, and Yoga of the

Heart for cardiac and cancer clients. Barbara is very active in retreat ministry and advocates yoga as a holistic modality, honoring body, mind, and spirit.

Liz is a certified hatha yoga instructor and a graduate of Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies 200hr-RYT program. She began her student training in 2003 and soon experienced the physical, mental and spiritual freedom in which a yoga practice can bring. Liz earned her Level I yoga certification in 2008 and continued her teacher training while working with

preschools, community organizations, gyms and various yoga studios. Liz believes everyone can benefit from the practice of yoga and offers to all her students a joyful experience.

Tracy Steven Peal Sr.: (Biomechanics of Running)

Tracy is an Elite Speed Coach and Movement Specialist. He has been engaged in the field of individual and group athletics, strength training and physical conditioning for over 25 years and continues to expand his field of expertise. As a Movement Specialist, Tracy analyzes sports biomechanics to provide the most effective way to increase speed, efficiency, quickness, agility, power and endurance. Through a unique reengineering of movement and body perception, athletes quickly develop the skills needed to markedly improve performance and significantly decrease injury potential. Tracy currently works with athletes from middle-school age through the professional ranks, including players from St. Joseph's and Temple University. Dr. Lee Cohen, Philadelphia Eagles DPM, calls him "an indispensable component for any athlete trying to up their game or return to the field of play."

Nita Spielberg, BSN, RN, E-RYT500: (Yoga Core Conditioning, Yoga Practicum, Yoga Sport)

Nita is a graduate of Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies Yoga Teacher Training program. She has studied in the Iyengar and Kripalu traditions since 1977 and has extensive teaching experience. Through group classes, workshops, and individual sessions, Nita teaches classical Hatha and Vinyasa yoga for beginning to advanced students and has travelled nationally to conduct workshops in anatomy and physiology related to yoga practice. Her interest in anatomy and physiology and her nursing background aspires to link Eastern and Western approaches to health.

Adam Travia, BA: (Therapeutic Herbal Applications)

Adam Travia is an herbalist, massage therapist, and reflexologist. He is a graduate of the Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies and has studied Western and Eastern Herbalism with many of the field’s leaders. He directs both the Herbal Medicine Certificate and the Aromatherapy Certificate programs. He maintains a private practice in both Philadelphia and New Jersey.
