Few know the true importance of the crew behind a theatre production. Senior Cheyenne Doles has worked in multiple roles behind the scenes, including stage manager. “I participate in theatre because it is my one true love and it is the only place I feel that I have ever
truly fit in. As a stage manager, I work with both actors and tech in order for the show to run smoothly. My favorite part of stage managing was that I actually got to see the actor’s perspective of a show because I’m normally working away from the actors. My favorite production either has to be “Pirates of Penzance” or “Grease,” and my favorite theatre memory would probably be the final show for Grease because

april 24“Ahaan Singhal, Allison Coffey, Rachel Brougher, and I went together on the Sunday after Earth Day to Noblitt Park and picked up the trash on the old trail that runs along the river. It was really fun to get together with some friends and clean up the trash by the river. I had no idea there was so much.”

April 16“I play football, basketball, and I run track. I worked at the basketball station with Trey Vincent and our job was to get people to come get our food. The fundraiser was for all the sports teams. It was a way for some parents to make their best food and basically sell it to get money for their sport.”

“I’ve been in art classes every year in school. My mom noticed that I loved art when I started making her cards every day in preschool, so she put me in an oil painting class. At North, I was exposed to multiple forms of art that I had never known. One in particular was charcoal, which I used to create the piece of art that won. The award that I won was just a distinction, which means that my art was good, but they didn’t have enough prizes for everyone.”

1American Pie isn’t only for singers and musicians. The song “Flashdance” featured a large group dance number. “I was one of the choreographers for the dance number. Basically, Emma McAllister and I met up a few times and would choreograph on our own take on the moves we saw in the music video. It was really easy considering how much dance experience we’ve had. The best part was being able to rehearse out in the aisles and see that everyone had been practicing and that they enjoyed it,” said senior Ace Richards.
2 Usually called a ‘Magical History Tour,’ this year’s show was dubbed the “Magical Her-Story” tour. “Pie was a really great experience. It was cool to have it centered around women and their effects on the musical world and the real world. It’s always cool to get to be a part of the show, and I hope to get to do it again,” said junior Justin Spoon.
3 Many seniors began their arts career as timid freshman who grew into confident senior performers. “Pie was really great. Knowing that it was possibly the last time that I performed in front of a huge chunk of Columbus was exhilarating but sad. I loved talking to all the people involved, and I learned a lot about Mr. Mihay,” senior Hayden Lowe said.
4 Both on and off stage, performers make the most of their American Pie experience. “Pie is a unique experience because it involves rock ‘n roll. Everyone had a blast with their best friends backstage and even had fun with students from East. I love dancing and singing with the people that share the same passion for music as I do. I also have an immense pride when I watch my friends perform from backstage,” sophomore Emily Sipes said.
5 The thrill of being on stage, for some, is an irreplaceable feeling. Junior Emily Waskom felt like a true celebrity as she sang her song in Pie. “I sang ‘To Sir, With Love.’ My favorite part was going out there and feeling like I was performing for everyone like a real concert and having people clap for me,” Waskom said.
6 Backup singers had a unique American Pie experience. They met multiple times a week for months leading to the show, and performed in 14 songs, including costume changes. “The best part of being a backup singer was the opportunity for me to maximize my amount of participation for my senior year of American Pie. I have been in Pie all four years of high school. Being part of Pie helped me get closer to many people, and I made a lot of close friends,” senior Jake Rudzinski said.
7 American Pie created an opportunity for singers to be able to work with others through duets and group songs. “I loved Pie. This was my second year being involved and it’s such an amazing experience to get up front of hundreds and do what I love. It’s a rush to hear people scream and chant your name. I sang ‘Hey Paula’ with Nathan Patton. It’s a sweet duet from the 60’s. I also danced in ‘Flashdance’ with a large group of dancers,” sophomore Lauren Frederick said.
8 American Pie allowed many singers to gain more real life experience by being the lead. “This year in American Pie, I was the lead singer for the song ‘Sweet Nothins’ by Brenda Lee. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have a lead role in our concert and get to create relationships with the girls in my group,” senior Sarah Hayes said.
9 Some performers showed off multiple talents by singing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument. Sophomore Olivia Norris performed in several songs, which allowed her to display her diverse skills. “Pie was awesome. I feel that it made me much more confident on stage and made me a better performer. My favorite part was singing onstage. I felt a rush of adrenaline which was great. I played the harp for ‘Goodbye to Love’ by Karen Carpenter,” Norris said.
10 American Pie was a good opportunity for all students to learn more about history and appreciate where they came from. “Personally, I love throwback songs and I thought that everyone did great. It was my first time going, and it definitely won’t be my last. My favorite thing was the ‘Flashdance.’ I know the theme was controversial, but I thought it was relevant and interesting,” freshman Emma Lawson said.

Prom was a highly anticipated event for most students and since prom was only open to juniors and seniors,
that made the night even more special. This year’s theme was “Circus of the Night.” From sparkly

“I went to Prom with my boyfriend Cameron. We still took pictures
outside for Prom even though it was raining. We just took some pictures with the umbrella until the rain went away. We checked the weather ahead of time, and we were trying to decide whether to take pictures outside or inside. We didn’t make the decision until we got to the softball fields and that’s when it started pouring. My favorite part of Prom was going to dinner with our group.”

“I didn’t expect to win Prom King at all. I didn’t even think about it. I didn’t
even vote for myself, so it wasn’t even in my mind to be nominated. It was also very awkward because I’m just an awkward dude and I’m not used to used to being in front of a lot of people, but it was fun. I wasn’t necessarily upset, but I was mainly bummed and sad that my date didn’t win. I felt bad, and it would have been awe-some to experience that with Camila, but I still had a great time with her regardless.”

going up on stage and dancing. The music started off good but had a rough patch, but overall it was alright. Prom was a lot of fun, from getting dressed up to going out to dinner. Just spending a lot of time with my friends was what made it great. I wore a white tux because Steven and I thought we would look like ballers and we did. The most memorable part was getting ready and going to dinner.”

Prom was fun, I finally got to show people that I actually know how to dance. I loved dancing because my date and I had a few dance lessons, plus I’ve always thought it was fun. The music was good, but there weren’t enough good slow songs. It was a great time and making it in the paper was cool too. I will remember senior prom as a great time where I made a lot of friends.”

“I went to prom with Alexandra Nusawardhana. My group was all
good friends of mine. Prom went really well and the dancing was amazing. We played a game where we would randomly toss a water bottle to a person and they would come to the middle, dance and then pass it on. We decided to do that game because the music felt like it had a good beat and it was a good way of connecting with people instead of everyone just awkwardly standing around.”

“I went to Prom with Graham Johnson, and we have been dating for
four months now. I loved everything about Prom. It was so much fun. I liked the parade a lot. It felt so special and it was so fun to see everybody in their cars on their way to prom. At first, we were planning to ride in an old truck, but then my host mom told me that people ride in boats, so I thought the idea would be really cool. My host family recently bought a speedboat so it wasn’t much work.”

Some academic classes differentiated themselves from the typical core classes by allowing students to make their own creative projects. Junior Lucas Cooper found his creative side through his Graphics Design class. “We use a lot of tools to complete our projects. This board lights up to show us what is between pages when we go with multiple layers of whatever material we use. We use this in
our graphic design class and the design fundamentals class. I like this class a lot. My favorite part is being able to use my imagination and create whatever comes to mind,” Cooper said.

As other 18 year olds packed up their rooms to head across the country or state to start the next chapter of their lives, senior Kenzie Fry packed up her life to travel across an ocean to France. “I’m taking a gap year, it’s more of a working abroad program where you live with a family as an
Au Pair,” Fry said. An Au Pair is a French nanny who lives with a family taking care of the children. Fry went through an extensive application and interview process with a program called Interexchange, which paired her with the program in France. It usually takes two to three weeks to be placed with a family, however, it only took Fry three days. After she was placed with them, she Skyped with the family to get to know the people who she would be living with for the next year. “I’ve always wanted to travel and I’ve taken French and visited there before and really like it,” Fry said. Fry’s parents have been very supportive of her decision to take a gap year. Fry has also completely embraced it. She has decided to delete all her social media apps in order to get the full effect of the culture. “I really wanted to experience the country for what it was. I thought, ‘When am I ever going to be 19 and in Paris again?’”

test and possible answers for the essay questions. I believe going to the review sessions are useful because you get to see what to expect when taking the actual test. I am nervous about the test. This will be my first AP test, so I’m not 100 percent sure what to expect.”

“In AP Chemistry, we are having an AP unit to review for the AP test. To prepare for the test, we
had a spring break review packet with AP problems for homework points, tests we worked in teams for lab points, and mock AP tests for test points. There are also bonus test points, and all the materials are graded based on the AP rubric and curve.”

“I’ve been going to a few of my AP classes in the morning to review for AP tests. I’ve only been to a few

“For AP Psychology, we go in for lunch, and we sit down at desks near the back of the classroom, and
Mrs. Pfaffenberger comes back and asks which packets we need for studying. There are 14 units, and it’s sup-posed to go by the pace of a packet a day. She gives us review questions based off of what packet we’re on. It’s a lot easier to do at lunch other than after school because I normally do other stuff after school.”

“Calculus parties are review opportunities outside of class to review material, do homework, get help, give
others help and eat food. In case we need extra help from a teacher, Mr. Nowlin or Mr. Schiefer are always there. Calc parties normally happen at 7:00 a.m. before school every day, except Thursday, and an evening session from 6:15 to 7:30 on Mondays. They have occurred at a higher frequency lately to help us prepare for our AP test.”

Track and field was a unique sport because it offered a wide variety of events that students could participate in. From running events to field events, most track athletes found their calling in one specific area. For junior Karol Espinoza, that event was pole vault. “Freshman
year during track we could pick a field event and so I picked pole vault. I thought it was super cool and interesting to fly in the air with a pole. I saw pole vaulting as something new I could do that a lot of people were not going to do. My favorite part about track is the pole
vaulting team. Since it is a small group, we are really close to each other. We have a great time every time we are together, whether it is a meet or just a practice,” Espinoza said.

toughed it outWhether it was through extra practices or team camps, some students trained in the off season in order to prepare themselves to compete in the next season of their sport.
Trying out for the team. Practicing after school. Bonding with the coaches. Competing in the state championship. Many high schoolers get the privilege to take part in these glorified things that come with participating in a high school sport. For senior Collin Booher, these things were
difficult for him to take part in. However, he would not let that stop him. Booher was born with Spina Bifida and chromosome II abnormality. His parents found out when he was born that he would be paralyzed from his belly button down and would be bound to a wheelchair his whole life. In the 18 years that Booher’s mother has had to wake him up early before school to complete various medical procedures, he has never complained and always wakes up with a smile on his face. Booher does not use his disability as an excuse to not do things. “My teacher mentioned Unified Track to me, and Mary Hamlin talked to me and my mom about it. I love it, and it is a good way for me to get my energy out,” Booher said. Booher participates in the shot put event with Ty Bentham. “We already knew each other before track. He teaches me the basics of shot put really well, so I understand it.” Booher never complains about the cards life has handed him; in fact, he does just the opposite. “It is a lot of fun, and I like being around other kids and feeling like I am a part of a high school team.”

As the weather warmed up, students began participating in more sports activities. Whether it was
playing in a spring sport or doing some off-season sports training, the springtime allowed students to compete
against rivals, improve their skills, and develop deeper bonds with friends and teammates.

1“I like track because everyone warms up together and it creates a nice feeling of unity. As a senior, I was really thinking about not doing track, but I decided to do it anyways, and it turned out to be a great decision.”

One school year. 10 months. 1,350 hours. In all this time we competed, volunteered, and performed. We participated in annual events, maintained traditions, and made memories with friends that we would remember long after high school. To us, school was more than just a place where we learned basic math facts, history, and science concepts, but a place where we formed friendships, experienced many of our firsts, and grew up physically, mentally, and emotionally. It was our year, and we made the most of it.

6“My partner was Alyssa Lackey for the Physics boat races. My favorite part of the project was coming up with the design of the boat. Our boat was a square with camo covering it and a cooler with ducks floating on the back.”

7“For the Student Assembly can drive, we sorted the cans into different stations, and then we counted how many cans we had. Then we built a bunch of boxes and went around to each station and filled up the boxes with each food, turkey, and a loaf of bread. Then we split up into groups and delivered the boxes to people’s houses.”

8“The best part about playing trombone in pep band is there is a lot of cool rhythms and songs to play. My favorite thing about the games are just the atmosphere, being with your friends, and playing fun music. It’s a great feeling.”

1“I was Doody in Grease. The best part was the song ‘Magic Changes.’ That was great. My favorite part of the show was experiencing the culture of that time, the popular media, and all the dancing.”
