COLOR GUARD PLACES FIRSTThe Shy-Annes performed three team routines at
American Dance/Drill Team Competition at New
Caney High School against 39 other teams on
Saturday. The team placed 3rd in their division and
7th overall. Senior Destinee Vargas 6th place in her
solo event and freshman Victoria Denena 5th place.
Other awards included:

The color guard team competed at their first
competition of the year on Saturday at Morton Ranch
High School in Katy where they placed 1st out of 50
teams.
They started the season with the highest score of their
classification. This year’s show is entitled “The Day
After” with a post-apocalyptic theme.

STUDENT ART ON DISPLAY AT CAPITAL
Two art students will have their work on display at
the 2016 Texas Art Education Association Youth Art
Month Capital Show from February 29-March 5 atthe Texas State Capitol.

Joan Fackler’s piece (right) were both recognized as
exceptional pieces of work.

EARN FIRST DIVISION
SADIE HAWKINS DANCE
Members of the orchestra competed in the solo
and ensemble contest at A&M Consol High
School on February 6. The following students
qualified for the State Solo & Ensemble to be
held at the University of Texas in Austin:

Warden on viola, and a string quartet consisting

REGION
Fourteen swimmers competed in the
region swim meet held at the Texas
A&M REC center. All swimmers
returned on day two after making finals
in the events held the day before.
Sophomore Julia Cook placed first in
both the 100 freestyle and the 50
freestyle to advanced to the state meet in
Austin.
With her oustanding
performance, Julia also earned the Girls
Region Athlete of the Meet Award.
Other swimmers who earned awards
include: Joel Coppernoll: 6th in 500 free,7th in 200 free; Marco Gutierrez: 4th in
100 breast, 5th in 200IM; the boys 200
free relay: Joel Coppernoll, Collin
Darnell, Marco Gutierrez, Jackson
Thurstin 7th place; and the boys 200
medley relay: Marco Gutierrez, Matt
Hutchinson, Joel Coppernoll, Addison
Ayers 8th
STATE
At the state meet, Cook earned twogold medals and set two new state
records.
In the 100-yard freestyle event she
recorded a time of 49.27, crushing the
old record of 49.63
During the finals for the 50-yard
freestyle event Cook just missed her day-
old record she set in the prelims of 22.86
with a 22.96 to defend her title from last
year.
OLYMPIC TRIALS
Cook qualified for the U.S. Olympic
Trials in the 100-meter backstroke at the
Speedo Sectionals swim meet at the
Texas A&M Rec Center.
Cook qualified with a time of 1:02.58
which was second only to two-time
Olympic gold medalist Kirsty Coventry,
who finished in 1:00.08.

The wrestling team competed at theDistrict 10-5A wrestling tournament at
Huntsville High School on February 6. In
the 14 weight classes for the boys varsity,
Bryan advances 12 to the regional
tournament and the other 2 qualified as
alternates.
