HALF MARATHON COURSE DESCRIPTION
NOTE: The Outer Banks is at sea level and the point-to-point course is reasonably flat. There is one point of course elevation, within the Nags Head Woods Pre-serve trail run with off road conditions between mile 12 & 13.
Course Description: Begin your journey in historic Kitty Hawk, home to the birth of aviation. This part of the course is flat, but don’t run so fast that you miss the in-credible Outer Banks scenery.
After just a few miles you’ll be greeted by the real Outer Banks – the people who make up this warm, close-knit community. Feel the energy boost as they applaud your run down residential Bay Drive.
At mile 8 you’ll run along the base of the famous Wright Brothers Monument, marking the location of the first flight that took place on December 17, 1903. Look up and you are sure to see planes flying overhead. You’ll be running where powered flight began!
Just two miles down the road, yet another surprise is in store. Around mile 10, you’ll enter the Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve. This lush maritime forest will amaze you with its understated beauty. All the beauty of trail running along a mulched, dirt road within this unique ecosystem.
No one said this was going to be easy. At about mile 12, you’ll leave Nags Head Woods on a narrow trail with off-road conditions. Mulch/Sand/Dirt. NOTE: Here is the final course elevation before cross-ing the Finish line. Look up and catch a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean!
Take in the beauty of this awesome maritime forest and give yourself a pat on the back...you made it! Now it's party time!!

HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU
You may know by now that the Fly-ing Pirate Half Marathon runs rough-ly the last 5K in the beautiful Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve. About two thirds is a packed gravel road lead-ing to a softer, sandy rolling terrain to the finish. Prepare to absorb the change and enjoy the last leg of the race!
It's best to run with a short stride. With a longer stride, you'll be less stable when landing. Shorter strides make it easier for the foot to land directly un-derneath the body, reducing instability as the feet sense how to adjust to the ground.
The point is that a short, quick stride makes you more responsive to uneven terrain. Combined with being more mindful of the trail, run more economi-cally (in other words, you'll be more efficient so it feels easier).
Take in the beauty of this maritime for-est and know that the booty is within reach!

WHO’S THAT LADY?
Those of you who have run with OBSE have no
doubt seen, heard or personally met our Lady
Pirate, Diana Lorditch, AKA Garnett DuBois.
Garnett has been a pirate her whole life and when
the opportunity to join the OBSE family came up,
she jumped at the chance. For 8 years Garnett has
been motivating runners and spectators at every
event. Garnett’s pirate flair and fashion make her
presence a memorable one for all. You will find
her posing for photos, signing autographs,
dancing and singing for the crowds. From the
Start to the Finish, she seems to be everywhere!
At 6 in the morning she dances through the
crowds with more enthusiasm than anyone
should at that time of day. Yelling to the crowds
“Are you ready to Run?!”
Garnett DuBois wants everyone to know that each
of you has a pirate inside, and a pirate name as
well. Be sure to look for her at the next Outer
Banks Sporting Events race and ask her what your
pirate name is.
RESULTS will be posted at the green Precision Results Tent . Check them out on your way to the Party!
