The Hamma Seawater Desalination Plant (SWDP) has been awarded a

2016 Impact Award from OPIC, which recognizes exceptional achievement in international private-sector development.

Water scarcity caused by demand, drought, and an aging, leaky distribution system left residents and businesses in Algiers facing

frequent water rationing, often receiving water for only one of every three days.

Hamma Water Desalination SpA, a special project company with 70% funding from GE and 30% from the Algerian Energy Company, was selected to create the 200,000 m3/day (53 MGD) Hamma Seawater

Desalination Plant (SWDP) – a reverse osmosis seawater desalination facility that significantly alleviates water scarcity in Algiers.

GE Water & Process Technologies was also awarded a 25-year contract to operate and maintain the plant.

The Hamma SWDP was Africa’s first reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant to be funded by public and private investment, and has been in

operation since April 2008.

The plant consists of nine single pass Reverse Osmosis modules. The production per unit reaches

25,100 m3/day of drinking water.

The membrane elements of each module are supplied by a high

pressure pump, a booster pump and a set of 32 energy recovery

exchangers.

The Hamma SWDP now provides ~1.5 million Algiers residents with the fresh water they need, meeting 25% of Algiers’ freshwater needs.
