Dr. James Mick - Orchestra

Dr. James Mick is an assistant professor of music education at Ithaca College in upstate New York. He teaches courses in string pedagogy, orchestral rehearsal techniques, instrumental conducting, and contemporary ensembles in the public schools. Additionally, he teaches and oversees all Ithaca College underclassmen music education majors through the Introductory Music Education Sequence.

An active clinician, Dr. Mick has recently presented at many local and national conferences including the National American String Teachers Association Conference (ASTA), the International Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic, the New York State School Music

Association Summer and Winter Conferences (NYSSMA), and the Florida Music Educators Association Conferences (FMEA). He has also been an invited guest speaker at a variety of institutions of higher education including recent visits to Cornell University, the University of Kentucky, and Hartwick College.

In addition to his guest presentation opportunities, Dr. Mick is a passionate music educator and ardent supporter of the public school music systems. He currently serves as president-elect of the New York American String Teachers Association and he frequently works with public school students of all ages. Guest conducting engagements include frequent all-county and area all-state orchestras throughout New York along with recent all-state and honor ensemble engagements in Alabama, Georgia, and Texas. On a more local level, Dr. Mick is the Music Director of the Ithaca Community Orchestra where he proudly works with a diverse group of musicians who represent a wide range of ages and experiences. His primary conducting mentors are Alexander Jiménez and Germán Gutiérrez.

Originally a native of Kansas, Dr. Mick has taught elementary and middle school orchestra in Texas, and high school orchestra and jazz in New York. Dr. Mick holds degrees in Music Education from Florida State University (Ph.D.), Ithaca College (M.M.), and Texas Christian University (B.M.E.). His research interests include string instrument vibrato, music preferences, and performance perceptions. He has most recently published articles in the String Research Journal, Contributions to Music Education, The Bridge, and the Florida Music Director. Outside of his academic pursuits, Dr. Mick is an avid bicyclist who enjoys spending time outdoors surrounded by nature and spending time indoors restoring his 132-year-old downtown Ithaca home.

He has served on the executive committee of the American Choral Directors Association at both the state and regional level and is currently serving as Northwest Region Chair for Pennsylvania ACDA. Beeken regularly presents sessions for symposia on topics including repertoire, rehearsal techniques, motivation, conductor - student relationships, and program building. Prior to his appointment at IUP, Dr. Beeken taught at Michigan State University where he conducted the Women's Glee Club and while residing in Des Moines, Iowa, directed the Drake Chorale at Drake University. He also taught elementary, middle school, and high school music for sixteen years, most recently serving as Director of Vocal Music for Waukee Schools in suburban Des Moines where he lead a program of over 300 students and twelve ensembles to national distinction.

Mr. Richard F. Regan - Band Newly named to the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center as its Orchestra Director, Richard Regan is also the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Sugar Loaf PAC based New York Wind Symphony. He has served as The Greater Newburgh Symphony Pops Orchestra conductor and maintains a strong connection with the youth of the region through his work with the Hudson Valley Honors Youth Wind Ensemble. He is in demand as a guest conductor of bands and orchestras throughout the country and has led performances in Beijing, Prague and France. Most recently, he conducted the New York Wind Symphony to a packed

and enthusiastic audience at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Mr. Regan’s tenure with the New York Wind Symphony has led to many important premieres including the North American Premiere of Johan de Meij’s Symphony No. 4. and the World Premiere (12/19/15) of the newly revised Universe at an Exhibition where the NYWS provided the live soundtrack to the film created by Emmy nominated director and astronomer, José Francisco Salgado. Regan has also collaborated with members of the New York Philharmonic on several concerto projects with the wind symphony, including Phil Meyers on Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1, Joseph Alessi on both John Mackey’s Harvest and Bramwell Tovey’s Lincoln Tunnel Cabaret, and Mark Nuccio on Aaron Copland’s Concerto for Clarinet. He is slated to conduct the New York Wind Symphony at the International Trombone Association’s convention at The Julliard School in June 2016.

In addition to his conducting obligations, Regan enjoys an active schedule as a professional trombonist and brass clinician in the New York metropolitan area. A founding member of the Storm King Trombone Ensemble, he also holds the principal trombone desk in The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Highly regarded as a music educator, Mr. Regan is a multiple winner of the William D. Revelli Award, a recipient of the Helen M. Hosmer Excellence in Music Teaching Award, and the 2014 Arts in Education Honoree at the Orange County Arts Council Awards Gala. He is a proud faculty member of the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District in Central Valley, New York. Now in his 19th year at MW, Regan conducts the award winning high school wind ensemble and teaches intermediate and secondary applied brass and percussion.
