SMFA Trustees and Governors, President Christopher Bratton,
Honorary Co-Chairs Ann + Graham Gund Director
Matthew Teitelbaum and Tufts President Anthony Monaco,
and Event Chair Abigail Ross Goodman
welcome you to an evening honoring MONA HATOUM.
THANK YOU
Dear Friends,
We are so glad that you are here to celebrate the SMFA and to
honor world-renowned contemporary artist Mona Hatoum.
Tonight we toast the long legacy of the School and its bold future.
The SMFA has been educating artists for 140 years. Soon the School
will formalize its historic bond with Tufts University, enabling
a new, dynamic relationship between these two great institutions.
The true beneficiaries of this union will be our students.
All net proceeds from this event directly support scholarships and
educational opportunities for students at the SMFA—our future artists
and creative leaders. We encourage you to bid with enthusiasm!
Once again, many thanks for your ongoing generosity.
With great gratitude,
Abigail Ross Goodman

Mona Hatoum
Hatoum alters the context of
familiar objects, actions and
bodies to evoke multi-layered
associations around personhood,
place and belonging. Her work
evokes a visceral response, and
speaks to the power of art to
communicate complex truths in a
way that language alone cannot.

My work relates ideas of
perception to the systemic
nature of physics and the
constant flux of the universal
flow. New Relations is an
artifact of the encounter of
two origins, adapting to one
another in their expansion.
ITEM 2 Starting Bid: $750New Relations 2016 Latex paint on canvas 40 x 45 inches

Hannah Bates
By printing photographs into
life size murals, and placing
subjects and objects in front of
the murals to be photographed
in a perspective, works in this
series explore the optical illusion
of three dimensional space.
ITEM 3 Starting Bid: $750The Dock 2016 Archival inkjet print 36 x 50 inches
7
Furen Dai
This work is a silent conversation
between two generations about
their different opinions of the
rules presented in a book called
Commandments for Women
written in China around 100 A.D.
ITEM #4 Starting Bid: $400Message Through Generation 2015 HD Video 4 minutes

Jane Dietrich
Unlike Poe, my works discuss
morals and the role of religion
in daily life. Be Still exemplifies
the need to just breathe when
all feels in commotion.
ITEM #5 Starting Bid: $100Be Still 2015 Found book of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe 8 x 12 inches

Ethan Domke
This piece marks the beginning
of my work with traditional
portraiture and the exploration
of old master techniques on
alternative substrates.
ITEM #6 Starting Bid: $700Untitled (side portrait #01) 2015 Oil on aluminum dibond panel 13 x 13 inches

I focus heavily on the trauma
(both physical and mental)
that people subject themselves
to. Whether it be a soldier in
combat, or a boxer in the ring
both are faced with violence, to
administer and receive.
ITEM #7 Starting Bid: $700Sgt Bigos, OEF-A, 2008 2015 Collage, duffel bag and acrylic 30 x 24 inches
11
Gabrielle Gibson
I consider ceramics my primary
medium. Through my ongoing
series Growth, I combine
functional pottery with elements
of the sea. Each barnacle, coral,
and urchin is meticulously hand
sculpted and carved, leaving each
body of work personal and unique.
ITEM #8 Starting Bid: $300Barnacle Tea Set (Growth) 2015 Ceramic Dimensions variable
12
Rina Ito
My work originates in
printmaking, and the illusionary
effects of repeated geometric
forms. I pull from my interest in
Japanese aesthetics, as well as
my background in science and
finance, to create interactive
experiences, from artist books
to large-scale sculpture.
ITEM #9 Starting Bid: $700Kite I 2016 Basewood, screenprint, steel pipes Dimensions variable
13
Sawool Kim
The ideas for my work come
from hypnagogic imagery,
which inspires a structure for
an unconscious dimension.
This work acts as visualization
for meditation and also
alludes to the possibility of
the unconscious space.
ITEM #10 Starting Bid: $300Event Horizon Series #4 2015 Acrylic on panel 12 x 12 inches
14
Catrina Morbidelli
“Call Me” deals with learning how
to create a new space for oneself,
when feeling weighted down by
generational tradition.
ITEM #11 Starting Bid: $700Call Me 2015 Enamel and acrylic on canvas 40 x 30 inches
15
Sara Oliver Gómez de la Vega
My work explores connections
between perception and
embodiment. This tridimensional
painting captures the structure of
light and color in a typical cloudy
day in the Spanish northern
region of Galicia.
ITEM #12 Starting Bid: $400Colors of the North, Quiet Storm 2015 Oil on panel and plexiglass 19 x 22 inches
16
Nicolas Papa
This piece embodies my desire
to stay observant, both of the
world around me and of myself,
a theme that is a consistent part
of my practice; through art I learn
more about the way I see things.
ITEM #13 Starting Bid: $600Façade 2016 Acrylic on panel 20 x 16 inches
17
Kate Rasche
My current body of work
addresses the fabrication and
accessibility of the contemporary
American wilderness.
ITEM #14 Starting Bid: $350A Myth of Our Own Creation (Tidal River) 2016 Oil on mylar, pins 13 x 19 inches
18
Emily Reinauer
Influenced by the years I’ve
spent in New Bedford, MA, my
work addresses how obsolete
and declining industries directly
affect society, the landscape,
and the environment
ITEM #15 Starting Bid: $250Exhaust III 2016 Etching, chine-collé 15 x 12 inches
19
Alicia Rodriguez Alvisa
In this series human hair creates
a bridge that represents how
thoughts, ideas and experiences
are interconnected. A long braid
goes away from the subject but
metaphorically comes back,
connecting the same head that
is always changing its content.
ITEM #16 Starting Bid: $700Rope Bridge 2015 Archival inkjet print 16 x 20 inches each
20
Shweta Maria Sengupta
India offers creative inspiration
at every turn. From the grandeur
of palace living to the utter
poverty in its many slums there
is a story to be told. My work
explores notions of belonging
and home as I seek to find and
define my own identity.
ITEM #17 Starting Bid: $1,200Interwoven with memories 2016 Oil on canvas 32 x 60 inches
21
Katherine P. Sloss
This MFA Buddha is a recent
painting subject for me.
Combining it with a cascade
of weeping cherry blossoms
somehow addresses a notion
of beauty and sadness, a link
suggested to me by my
Japanese calligraphy teacher.
ITEM #18 Starting Bid: $300Weeping Cherry Buddah (Triptych) 2016 Paint on semi-transparent pellon 9 x 8 inches each
22
Gabriel Sosa
Incorporating both contemporary
and archival images of Cuba, my
work draws on my own family
history to question the resilience
of memory and reconnect the
Cuban diaspora with those on
the island.
ITEM #19 Starting Bid: $400What they said about Guanabacoa 2016 Graphite, colored pencil, and acetone transfer on paper 21 x 26 inches
23

of my personal meditation on
stillness through repetition.
ITEM #20 Starting Bid: $350No Title (Vessels) 2016 Porcelain with gold finish 5 x 22 inches

By inserting artificial light into
landscape images, I explore
the complexity of the modern
human’s relationship to the
natural world.
ITEM #21 Starting Bid: $800Stand of Trees in Blue Hills Reservation (Edition 1 of 3) 2015 Archival inkjet print 32 x 40 inches

This piece is part of a series
depicting an uncanny presence
of native or invasive species
of flora and fauna within the
human-built and human-
occupied spaces which
displaced them.
ITEM #22 Starting Bid: $1,200Portland, August 2015 Oil on canvas 60 x 36 inches
26
Anthony Peyton Young
Through drawing, painting,
printmaking and paper-
making, my work explores the
history of the black image in
the West. Here, I use a police
report’s vague description of
a young, black man to create
a forensic portrait.
ITEM #23 Starting Bid: $775Unidentified Black Male2016 Gun powder on handmade paper 22 x 30 inches
