This year we want to celebrate our 50 years by continuing our Archive Collection and letting past and future meet. We’ve handpicked a few graphics from the past to be reintroduced as reprisals on modern frames.

SAGE CATTABRIGA-ALOSAInspired by spiritual Mandalas and Native Alaskan art, Sage created his own art. “This year I took the opportunity to make a custom piece that was specific for a goggle strap.” Symbolism and shape are huge influences in Sage’s paintings, and using a kaleidoscope effect, he created a compass-inspired Mandala.

BOBBY BROWNLife can be hectic when you’re Bobby Brown. Being a pro skier is full of contest schedules, screaming fans, photoshoots, physical therapy from broken bones, poster signings, and sponsor obligations. For his goggle, Bobby was inspired by a Smith goggle graphic from 1986, clean and classic is the name of the game.

ANGEL COLLINSONIt’s all about harnessing the energy in the world around us. Angel’s introduction to the ID program uses iconography of the mysterious, cosmic powers all around us. She’s not afraid to be a little out there and question why things are the way they are.

DAVID WISEEmbodying the underdog spirit, David has been climbing to the top of a lot podiums lately. That underdog spirit is captured in David vs. Goliath artwork by Harry Lau. Lau is an artist and licensed-tattoo artist out of Portland, Oregon. His line work is perfect to capture Wise’s aggressive halfpipe style.

Inspired design.SCOTTY LAGO2015 is all about new beginnings for Mr. Lago. Scotty is consolidating his life into what he really loves: snowboarding with friends and getting out into the outdoors. Inspired by the rugged outerwear and traditional patterns of the American west, Scotty wants his goggle to evoke the wilderness that he loves to escape into.

AUSTIN SMITHThe sense of exploration gets Austin going. Traveling the world to snowboard in new places drives him as a professional rider. This year Austin wanted an ID goggle that was subtle and quiet. We created a low-key pattern that is reminiscent of old wool textiles, perfect for Austin to take on his next adventure.

ELENA HIGHTElena is a balance of progression and keeping it classic. Double corks and boned out methods. Power and beauty. She wanted her ID goggle to reflect that. A fun animal print combined with a modern ombre technique. It’s good to find balance.

DESIREE MELANCONEveryday Desiree draws at least one drawing, kind of like a journal but in illustrations. She keeps track of time passing and memories of the day with sketches. Her ID goggle this year is artwork created specifically for this project. The trees are the forests of her home in Bend, Oregon.

SMITH ID SNOWBOARD

SCOTT STEVENSOne of the most inventive snowboarders ever, Scott isn’t afraid to have some fun with his goggles. Inspired by the color of early-90’s snowboard culture, his ID goggle is also part of our Archive Collection. Scott hand-selected a graphic from the Smith vault to help celebrate his better part of a decade with Smith and Smith’s 50 years.

XAVIER DE LA RUEIt takes a little bit of a dark side to descend the crazy lines Xavier rides. For the second year in a row, we paired Xavier with artist and Smith family-member, Axel Geittmann. Axel’s artwork has a dark, rebellious side. Putting ink to paper, Axel draws finely-lined characters from your nightmares.

WOOLRICH (@WOOLRICHINC): Woolrich has been synonymous with quality outdoor clothing for over 180 years. Founded in 1830 by John Rich, Woolrich is the oldest continually operating Woolen Mill in the United States. The Company was originally founded in North Central Pennsylvania to manufacture fabric for the wives of hunters, loggers and trappers who lived in the area. Woolrich remains a family business.

Each Woolrich x Smith helmet has earpads wrapped in wool milled in Pennsylvania. The patterns are pulled from the Woolrich archives: a 1970’s Navajo geometric pattern and their classic Huntplaid. Woolrich is, after all, the originator of the buffalo check pattern, possibly the most classic pattern in outdoor culture.

OWNER OPERATOR (@OPERATORUSA): Owner Operator is a manufacturer of true technical apparel for the mountains, made in the USA. All of the outerwear is made in New York City’s garment district by the best tailors in the world. They combine classic good looks with functional features and technologies. Their commitment to American-made goods is rare. With an aesthetic that reminds us of the good ol’ days of snowboarding, Owner Operator believes in timeless quality.

MAKING RAD TOGETHER

ADAM HAYNES (@ADAMHAYNES): Born and raised of fine Central Oregon stock, artist Adam Haynes makes art of the world around him: the vivid geography of the Cascade Range and the off -kilter character of its rural inhabitants. Not only a commercial illustrator and fine artist, he is a masters champion of The Legendary Banked Slalom and avid enjoyer of the backcountry.

THE LAND (@LAND_BOYS): In the heart of Austin, Texas, the duo of Caleb Owen Everitt and Ryan Rhodes, known as L A N D, are defining a genre of design. Renowned for creating lettering by hand and inspired by historical typography, they are challenging the modern, digital world.

POLER (@POLERSTUFF): Most companies treat collaborations as flash-in-the-pan projects. Smith thinks of collabs as building lifelong relationships, hence the 3rd year of the Poler project. Poler Outdoor Stuff makes gear for people that are travelers, couch surfers, regular surfers, skateboarders, snowboarders, bicyclists, parents, kids, car campers and anyone else looking for having fun on road trips and in the outdoors.

MRS. EAVES (AKA GEMMA O’BRIEN @MRSEAVES101): Gemma O’Brien is a Sydney, Australia-based typographer, hand-letterer and illustrator. A stint learning letterpress in university sparked a fervent obsession with typography, the dropping out of law school, and the creation of her blog For the Love of Type. Wielding pens, pencils and markers, she creates hand-lettered, typographic and illustrated masterpieces.

CARBONIC-X LENSESSmith’s carbonic-x outer lens material is individually molded to off er optimum scratch and impact resistance, increased visual acuity and enhanced contrast sensitivity. The carbonic-x material meets Class 1 optical standards. There is simply no better lens.

TLT (TAPERED LENS TECHNOLOGY)When light passes through a medium it refracts, i.e. changes course. If left uncorrected, this refraction can cause visual distortion and eye fatigue. Smith’s Tapered Lens Technology straightens out the incoming light rays by progressively tapering the lens from the optical center toward the peripheral view. What this means for you is that you see with 100% accuracy and maximum comfort.

SPHERICAL LENS Spherical lenses are built on a base curve in both the X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) axis. Smith’s spherical lenses are off ered exclusively in carbonic-x material with TLT Optics and a base 6x4 toric shape. This pioneering shape provides the highest level of optical clarity, improved fit characteristics and increased volume improving fog performance.

5X ANTI-FOGThe most advanced anti-fog lens ever created. Building upon the hydrophilic, micro-etched surface area principles of our Fog-X lenses, our revolutionary, 5X anti-fog inner lens has been engineered to provide over five times the absorptive properties of anything on the market. Initial testing showed standard anti-fog lenses fogging between 30-50 seconds. Smith’s proprietary, 5X anti-fog treatment withstood fogging for over 120 seconds in controlled lab tests.

FOG-XOur Fog-X lens treatment employs a hydrophilic, micro-etched surface to absorb moisture and disperse it over a wide surface area to prevent fogging. Because it is physically carved into the lens, it can’t be wiped away like other anti-fog coatings.

Ultimate integrationAt Smith, we design helmets and goggles to work together as a fully integrated system. For the helmet line, the most important factor in integration is the AirEvac ventilation system. This is the bridge that allows goggles and helmets to function as one system, venting warm moist air away from the goggles, through the helmet climate control system and ultimately away from the head.

INTEGRATION BEGINS WITH A PRECISE FIT

Ultimate integration starts with the precise fit of the Smith goggle and helmet. Our helmets are designed to match the curvature of the goggle frame, eliminating “gaper gap” and allowing precise alignment between the helmet AirEvac and the goggle venting systems.

AIREVAC: MAXIMUM AIRFLOW IS CRUCIAL

Goggles fog when standard helmets trap warm, moist air in the goggle chamber. Smith’s AirEvac ventilation systems generate maximum airflow that pulls warm, fog-causing air out of the goggle. The warm air is allowed to exhaust out of the top of the goggle and begin its path through the helmet’s AirEvac system.

AIREVAC 2: CONSTANT AIRFLOW

AirEvac 2 continues to drive the warm air away from the goggle through external vents and internal channels in the EPS liner. Internal airflow can be adjusted through the helmet’s Regulator climate control system.

REAR EXHAUST VENTILATION

The warm air that originally built up in the goggle has been forced out via the AirEvac ventilation system, has traveled through the AirEvac 2 EPS vent channels, and is now being exhausted at the furthest distance possible from the goggle. Ultimate integration between goggle and helmet from start to finish.

Smith’s Hybrid Shell construction combines separate lightweight and durable shells to create an entirely new helmet category. By fusing our tough bombshell ABS construction with flyweight In-Mold technology, our Hybrid Shell construction optimizes the favorable traits of each material in this revolutionary process. The result is a modern design that provides a lightweight, low profile, perfectly fitting helmet. Hybrid Shell construction also creates a clean, smooth top surface by enabling the low profile Regulator to function with reduced mass and volume.

Koroyd® is an energy absorber which is fully breathable and doesn’t compromise impact performance. Koroyd’s® open cell construction allows cool air in, while expelling hot air from the rider's head. The completely open cell construction integrates with internal channels to create the full Aerocore™ construction to provide ventilated protection.

Thousands of co-polymer extruded tubes, thermally welded to create an unparalleled consistent and fully engineered core. Each Koroyd® section is engineered to precise durometer, size, and thickness specifications to provide the greatest impact resistance and aesthetically consistent presentation.

The combination of Koroyd’s® precise and unique thermal welding process leads to a structure with both extremely eff icient and consistent energy absorption properties. Upon impact, the cores crush in a completely controlled manner, decelerating the energy from the impact and reducing the final trauma levels.

MIPS technologyMulti-directional impact protection system

MIPS is used to reduce the rotational forces to the brain in the case of an oblique impact. Smith helmets are created to absorb direct impacts very eff iciently and when combined with MIPS, Smith helmets absorb oblique forces better by allowing a small rotation of the outer shell relative to the liner.

When you fall to the ground at an angle rotational forces are generated. A helmet integrating MIPS technology creates a sliding layer between the outer shell and the head. This allows

the helmet's outer shell to slide relative to the head when hitting the ground, so the rotational force is decreased, reducing the potential to damage your brain.

Climate control

REGULATORAdjustable, easy to use and extremely eff ective climate control, our low profile Regulator ventilation system allows you to modify the amount of airflow and heat exhaust even with a gloved hand.

AIRFLOWAirflow ventilation utilizes strategically placed vents for easy climate control in all conditions. Vent placement maximizes airflow and heat exhaustion in warm temperatures while minimizing undesired cold air drafts. Fabric flaps in the lining design on certain models allow you to open and close the airflow vents for adjustable comfort.

DUAL REGULATORTemperature control is the most important feature when considering how to enjoy the entire day on the hill. Our Dual Regulator ventilation system independently controls the front and rear sections of the Vantage venting, allowing you to modulate your body temperature even in extremely cold conditions. By exhausting heat through the rear vents while maintaining a sealed front end, your body can eff ectively cool down if needed and avoid the dreaded “ice cream headache.”
