RESTORED CLASSICS

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE

Frank Capra’s gift that keeps on giving was initially met with a fairly cool response upon its first release - but has, since then, grown in stature, warming its way into the hearts of countless cinemagoers as a now treasured Christmas tradition. Its story of a troubled small-town banker (James Stewart) contemplating his life - and possible death - on Christmas Eve follows the redemptive arc laid out in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET

Celebrating its 70th anniversary, this much-referenced and often-remade classic delves into the perennially sticky debate of whether or not Father Christmas truly exists. Kindly old Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) lands a job at Macy’s department store as their Santa Claus, but causes consternation among his cynical employers when he insists that he’s the real deal. He drags New York’s great and good into an argument that only a miracle can settle.

WHITE CHRISTMAS

Directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) this heartwarming Christmas tale is a true joy to watch and includes a veritable treasury of Irving Berlin classic tunes. Two talented song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye), pals during World War II, join forces, romantically and professionally, with The Haynes Sisters (Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen) and together they trek to Vermont for the perfect seasonal holiday.

This Christmas brings glad tidings of two beloved seasonal classics both newly restored in 4K. Released within a year of each other in 1946 and 1947 respectively, It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street have been freshly boxed and wrapped in digital cinema’s fanciest packaging, adding an extra sparkle to their enduring magic. They join White Christmas, screening here in its recently restored version.

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL

The best ever Muppet film, digitally restored for your viewing pleasure, and celebrating its 25th anniversary. Michael Caine plays Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserable old man, bitter about his past and determined to ignore Christmas completely. When Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, he begins to discover the feeling of Christmas cheer and the importance of good deeds.

The Muppets, Tom Hanks and Aardman Animations – what more do you need for the perfect family Christmas?

THE POLAR EXPRESS

Robert Zemeckis pushed the boundaries of motion capture animation to create his unique winter wonderland starring Tom Hanks. Late on Christmas Eve, a young boy lies awake in bed doubting the existence of Santa Claus and nervously waiting to hear the sound of sleigh bells. Instead a magical steam engine roars outside his window, bound for the North Pole.

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS

Santa’s secret is revealed in this family comedy from animation wizards Aardman, creators of Wallace & Gromit. Santa misses one gift delivery, and to Santa’s young son, Arthur, this isn’t in keeping with the magic of Christmas. With retired Grandsanta, a rebellious young elf, an old sleigh and some untrained reindeer, Arthur sets out in a crazy mission to deliver the last present!

ELF

Will Ferrell’s take on a North Pole elf trying to figure out Manhattan just might be the funniest he’s ever been, and this is certainly one of the best Christmas movies from the last twenty years. Under the watchful eye of writer/director Jon Favreau, Will Ferrell’s performance as loveable man-child Buddy is played with supreme comedic skill. Elf is a true modern Christmas classic.

MON 18 – SAT 23 DEC

DIR: JON FAVREAU • USA/GERMANY 2003 • 1 HR 37 MINS

Will Ferrell, Chevy Chase and, erm, Liam Neeson? The crazy, wacky and preposterous sides of Christmas are explored in two films that don’t take themselves too seriously (plus Love Actually).

LOVE ACTUALLY

With nine separate stories and the cheesiest concept you can imagine, you’ll never want to admit that this is a tearjerker, but it is. The star-studded cast includes Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Laura Linney and Emma Thompson (who steals the show). Whether you love it sincerely, love it ironically, or hate it but just can’t look away, we welcome you to join us!

MON 18 – WED 20 DEC

NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION

With 25,000 lights on the roof, the SWAT team taking siege outside, and an exploding turkey on the dining room table, the Griswold family celebrates the holiday in true National Lampoon style! Having survived both Wally World and Europe, Clark (funniest man alive Chevy Chase) and his family are now attempting to have a “good old-fashioned family Christmas.” What could go wrong?

CULT CHRISTMASGREMLINS + ZACH GALLIGAN Q&A

We are delighted to welcome Gremlins star Zach Galligan to QFT for a post-screening Q&A! Two years after E.T., Steven Spielberg gave it a mischievous sibling in Joe Dante’s anarchic creature feature, a subversive parable on the dangers of irresponsible pet care that doubles as an antidote to small-town Americana and Yuletide sentimentality. Zach Galligan plays the teenager who unwittingly unleashes a vicious, murderous swarm of little gremlins. Tickets £10 (£8 concessions and Film Card holders).

CULT CHRISTMAS 06/07

DIE HARD

The employees of the Nakatomi Corporation have their festive soirée interrupted by the arrival of a group of well organised, well-armed - and well dressed - criminals headed up by a charismatic mastermind (Alan Rickman, in full flight). Their only hope is tough, street-smart New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis). Out-numbered, out-gunned and minus a pair of shoes, McClane starts picking off the gang one by one. And you thought your office Christmas party was bad…

FRI 15 – SUN 17 DEC

DIR: JOHN MCTIERNAN • USA • 1988 2 HRS 12 MINS

BAD SANTA

Forget the recent sequel, THIS is the ultimate feel bad Christmas movie. Billy Bob Thornton overindulges in the spirit of the season as Willie T. Stokes: a hard-drinking, foul-mouthed professional thief who cements his spot on the “naughty list” by impersonating a department store Santa in order to rob shopping malls during the Christmas period. Bad Santa is the latest in our series of Cult & Classic late night screenings.

FRI 22 DEC, 10.00PM

DIR: TERRY ZWIGOFF • USA/GERMANY 2003 • 1 HR 31 MINS

Top of Santa’s “nice list” this year is the 4K restoration of It’s a Wonderful Life, but we’re also making room in our festive selection box for those more used to a lump of coal on the big day. Welcome to the party, pal!
