She has been a dedicated and active volunteer within TEA for several years in numerous leadership

positions, and an upbeat presence at the many events she attends and helps organize with her company, VOA Associates Inc. in Orlando. Currently she is Second Vice President of the TEA International Board. She specializes in positioning VOA for the next great design opportunity in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, branding, and planning services in the entertainment cultural and hospitality industry.

Melissa Townsend, Day One Co-ChairPresident, The Attraction Services Company (TASC)Currently serving on the TEA International Board of Directors as Secretary, Melissa Townsend has been involved with the TEA for many years in a variety of roles. Her background is in industrial sales; she and

partner Ron Griffin joined TEA soon after founding TASC in 1995, when Griffin was working on Universal Studios Florida. Specializing in “basically any moving part in an attraction,” including show action equipment, flame effects and interactives, TASC provides in-house engineering, both mechanical and electrical, as well as controls and programming. Townsend credits participation in TEA as instrumental in establishing and growing TASC.

Roberta Perry, Day Two Co-ChairVP Business Development, Edwards Technologies, Inc. (ETI ) & Fresh Juice Global (FJG)Roberta has worked with such global brands as Universal Studios, Universal City Walk, 20th Century Fox, Cirque du Soleil, US Navy, Coca-Cola, Dick Clark American Bandstand

Pat MacKay, Day Two Co-ChairOnes&ZerosMedia Pat MacKay was founder of the publishing entity that produced TCI and Lighting Dimensions (now Live Design), and the LDI trade show. For decades she has helped organize workshops and events that helped focus attention on key issues and trends

in themed entertainment, and foster industry leadership. She has longtime involvement on the TEA Thea Awards Committee, and in 2012 became a co-chair of the TEA Summit. Pat was elected Fellow of the USITT in 1985, received LDI’s Life in Light award in 2007, and was honored in 2015 with the TEA Distinguished Service Award.

Welcome to the TEA Summit – the Themed Entertainment Association’s annual conference held on the two days preceding the annual Thea Awards Gala.

Over the years the TEA Summit has grown in size and scope. With hundreds of people gathering to celebrate the Thea Awards, the adjacent Summit helps TEA serve them and the global attractions industry with a unique forum for dialog, professional development and networking.

The Summit Day One program varies year to year, reflecting current direction, trends and concerns. This year highlights the headline Thea Awards recipients:

Keith James of JRA (2016 Buzz Price lifetime honoree), and the San Diego Zoo (Thea Classic Award). AECOM returns with the global economic outlook. New for 2016 is the panel discussion on ethics, led by TEA President Steve Birket and Kile Ozier.

TEA Summit Day Two - Thea Case Studies Day is a full day of presentations showcasing the current slate of Thea Awards recipients. Project owners, creatives and technical specialists share highlights and challenges of making some of the most compelling visitor attractions in the world.

Steve Birket PE, VP Birket Engineering – TEA International Board President Starting in Walt Disney World Entertainment three months after his 16th birthday, Steve Birket has worked as a performer, engineer, and manager for the Walt Disney Company and Universal Creative, and in the themed entertainment industry ever since. Steve holds an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Central Florida and a MBA from Rollins College, and is a life-long central Florida resident.

Jennie NevinChief Operating Officer, Themed Entertainment Association Now in her third year at the executive helm of TEA, Jennie Nevin has become a familiar face in the attractions industry while stepping up as an effective leader. She has helped the Association reach new milestones on many levels including membership growth, member services, brand identity, financial stability, internal organization, staffing and global awareness. Previously, Jennie served as Director of Operations and Development and Deputy Executive Director for the Hollywood Radio & Television Society in Los Angeles. Based in TEA’s Burbank headquarters, Jennie’s dedication to TEA also takes her into the field to know and represent the industry first-hand.

Some 1,100 TEA members represent roughly 8,000 creative specialists, from architects to designers, technical specialists to master planners, scenic fabricators to artists, and builders to feasibility analysts working in 30 US states and 40 different countries. TEA presents the annual Thea Awards and the TEA Summit and hosts the annual SATE Conference on Experience Design. 2016 BUZZ PRICE THEA AWARD FOR A LIFETIME OF DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENTS

Keith James, CEO, Jack Rouse Associates – Keynote speakerKeith James has spent his entire professional career planning, designing and operating a wide range of visitor experiences around the world. Early years were spent at Kings Productions, where he learned all the disciplines involved in designing and constructing a modern theme park.

After overseeing the development for Canada’s Wonderland and managing the operations of both the 1986 World’s Fair (Vancouver) and Australia’s Wonderland, Keith joined Universal Studios Florida, as VP, Show and Ride Production. After the opening of the popular theme park, Keith joined JRA in January of 1992. He is a past president of TEA.

AECOM: THE INDUSTRY BY THE NUMBERS

John Robinett, Senior Vice President - AECOM EconomicsBased in Los Angeles, John Robinett has had a 30-year career evaluating the economics of leisure, culture, entertainment, and sports facilities. Clients include J. Paul Getty Center, American Museum of Natural History, 9-11 Memorial and Museum, MSI Chicago, Disney, Universal

Studios, Anschutz Entertainment Group, and the Oakland Raiders. He has taught entertainment economics at UCLA and USC. Prior to joining AECOM, he worked for the Walt Disney Company in business planning for theme parks and resorts. John has an MBA from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird), and a BA in business from Loyola Marymount University.

Linda Cheu, Principal / Vice President at AECOM A leader in AECOM’s cultural facilities practice group, Linda Cheu advises non-profits and government clients on development, expansion, and operations of museums, art centers, multi-tenant cultural facilities, and performing arts centers. Services include business planning, developing operational

and governance plans, earned income strategies, market-based concept development, attendance and audience analysis; facility

usage projections, physical planning parameters and revenue projections. She frequently teams with sub-consultants such as cost estimators, exhibit designers, and/or architects.

Margreet Papamichael, AECOM Director – Economics With 18+ years of consulting experience in attractions, hotel, leisure, and tourism, Margreet Papamichael’s experience spans theme parks, water parks, commercial and cultural attractions, resort hotels, urban hotels, mixed use developments, restaurants, tourism strategy, conference venues, golf

resorts, racecourses, and leisure real estate. The majority of her clients are private sector companies, which require close cooperation with the various large operating companies and major banks. She also leads the EMEA effort for the annual TEA/AECOM Theme Index and Museum Index.

Brian Sands, AICP, AECOM Vice President – EconomicsHaving 20+ years’ experience covering a wide range of culture/leisure and real estate development projects, Brian Sands focuses on estimating demand and financial performance of the project via the evaluation of the concept, site, markets, and comparables, economic and fiscal impact

analyses, as well as project management. He also coordinates global production of the annual TEA/AECOM Theme Index and Museum Index, and is primarily responsible for the figures for the Americas. He is on the TEA Eastern Board of Directors and on the Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) Board of Directors.

Chris Yoshii, AECOM Vice President, Global Director of Economics, Design Planning+Economics AsiaDestination resort development, hospitality, leisure & tourism, urban regeneration, business planning, investment and the economic feasibility of mixed-used urban projects have been the focus of Chris Yoshii’s 25+ years of experience. He has overseen

and spearheaded studies entailing the analysis of markets, financials, economic impact and investment as well as programming and management planning. Chris leads the Asian effort for the annual TEA/AECOM Theme Index and Museum Index. He serves on the TEA International Board of Directors and is President of the TEA Asia Pacific Board.

SAN DIEGO ZOO AND SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK

Carmi G. Penny, Director of Collections Husbandry Science / Curator of Mammals, San Diego ZooResponsible for oversight and strategic planning for all Zoo collection divisions as well as for traditional duties as curator of mammals, Carmi G. Penny supervises a staff of curators, associate curators and animal care management personnel and

maintains current knowledge of domestic and international regulatory requirements relative to management of the animal collection. Penny originally joined the San Diego Zoo in 1970 as a keeper. Field expeditions have taken Penny throughout the world on collection and conservation initiatives. At home, he has provided consulting assistance for the California Department of Fish and Game and the Tennessee Farm Bureau and legislature.

David E. Rice, FAIA, Director of Architecture and Planning, San Diego Zoo GlobalServing San Diego Zoo Global, initiating and overseeing development of new projects, David Rice is responsible for multi-million dollar annual budgets involving the design and construction of zoological exhibits, visitor facilities and administrative

spaces. Rice came to the Society in 1975 as project manager. In his new role, he participated in the planning and development of new projects and coordinated their construction. In 1979, he was named director of architecture and planning and was recently elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.

Kile Ozier - Itinerant Creative GuyCreative Producer, Director, Writer; Ozier is a nimble creator of storytelling experience, consistently delivering shows that connect at emotional levels and resonate with audiences long after Curtain. His body of work includes stadium spectacle, parades, Inaugurals and Ceremonies of State, theme park show and theatre in a number

Anthony Esparza, Chief Creative Officer, SeaWorld Parks & EntertainmentAnthony Esparza has spent his career creating fun by orchestrating all aspects of a great guest experience. From theme parks, attractions, live entertainment, restaurants, retail and media to licensed products, his expertise and award-winning creative teams have touched every demographic for

companies such as Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures, Harlem Globetrotters, Dollywood, and now SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. Recently joining the SeaWorld team, Anthony oversees their quest to develop “experiences that matter” by creating fun & meaningful attractions, resorts, and television shows for SeaWorld’s parks and new business enterprises.

Clay Rivers – author, artist, actorClay Rivers has performed in numerous live stage shows and parades at Walt Disney World, as well as the touring and flagship companies of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. He has designed graphics, packaging, and products for various clients, including Walt Disney World, the Disney Stores, and Walt Disney Imagineering.

While living in Los Angeles, he studied under celebrated acting coach Richard Brander. He has appeared in both large and small screen productions. Clay is also a screenwriter whose works have been recognized in national screenwriting competitions in New York, San Francisco, and Boston.

ONE WORLD OBSERVATORY, NEW YORKJohn Urban, Vice President/General Manager, Legends Attractions/One World ObservatoryWith 30+ years’ experience in sports, entertainment and venue management, John Urban has overall responsibility for the successful launch and day-to-day business operations of One World Observatory, open atop the World Trade Center since

May 2015. His career began in 1999 at Madison Square Garden, where he held various positions over 16 years. Next joining Radio City Music Hall, he oversaw its restoration and was GM for 7 years. Immediately prior to joining Legends, Urban was EVP, Events & Booking at the Scottrade Center complex in St. Louis, helping oversee the restoration and re-launch of Peabody Opera House.

Philippe de Villiers, Creator, Puy du FouA graduate of École nationale d’administration, Philippe de Villiers became Sub-Prefect, then Minister of Culture, then Governor of the Vendée in France. Today, he is entrepreneur, creator-screenwriter and best-selling author of political and historical titles as well as books about Puy du Fou. In 1977, he originated the Cinéscénie of Puy

du Fou and in 1989, added the Puy du Fou grand park that enacts the history of France. He envisioned a great book of living history under the open sky, with many live performances. Puy du Fou was honored in 2012 with the Thea Classic Award.

Thierry Retif, Scenic Designer, Puy du FouHaving worked with Puy du Fou for many years, for the park’s new attraction, Les Amoureux of Verdun (Lovers of Verdun) Thierry Rétif re-created the atmosphere of a war zone with his characteristic attention to detail. Thierry filled the environment with more than 25,000 authentic objects, seeking to immerse guests so they could

grasp the difficult living conditions of soldiers in the First World War. He showed unflagging enthusiasm and creative energy in obtaining and assembling this impressive collection. It became a personal, heartfelt mission to pay tribute to the soldiers.

Having programmed the 50th anniversary Parade of Dreams, she was thrilled to assist on the 60th anniversary Paint the Night parade. During that decade, Caitlin has

designed, specified, or maintained the lighting for every parade and street show on that route. Her favorites include Phineas and Ferb’s Dance Party, and adding over 10,000 LED strobes to the original Disney’s Electric Parade. Caitlin has Master’s degrees in Lighting Design and English Literature.

CHANGING THE STATUS QUO: WHY GENDER IN MEDIA MATTERS

Madeline Di Nonno, CEO, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media Madeline Di Nonno is the Chief Executive Officer of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the only research based non-profit working with the entertainment and media community to improve gender diversity in children’s entertainment through research based programs. Di Nonno leads the Institute’s strategic direction and brings over thirty years experience in media, marketing and business development in the entertainment, non-profit, digital media and consumer packaged goods industries.

Di Nonno began her career at ABC Television Network in corporate publicity working on the marketing communications campaigns for mini-series, sports and daytime, including The Winds of War, The Thorn Birds and the 1984 Olympics.

Madeline holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and serves on the Board of Directors for the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences Foundation and as a Board Advisor for FEM Inc. and GameChanger.

Pehr Hovey, Senior R&D Imagineer, Walt Disney Imagineering Pehr Hovey is a Senior R&D Imagineer at Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale, Calif. In this role, he develops new technologies, techniques and tools for interactive experiences at Disney Parks around the world.

Pehr started at the company as a consultant in 2011 serving as the technical lead for the Made with Magic platform – an interactive experience allowing guests to be part of nighttime shows and fireworks displays – overseeing the product development, show control hardware and content authoring software. Prior to joining Imagineering,

he was a freelance interactivity designer for music videos, television programs and commercials.

Pehr attended Washington University in St. Louis where he received B.S. degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science. He also received a M.S. in Multimedia Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

When spring turns to summer, the attractions industry will start to kick into full gear. It also means the arrival of the new Theme Index and Museum Index. The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and AECOM will publish the 2016 study announcing the annual rankings and the latest industry trends. Look for it in late May/early June 2016.
