As in previous years, the presentation of the Most Safety Conscious Haulier Drivers awards to drivers who had done well in the area of safety performance took place at the annual PSA Safety Launch held on 19 January 2016.

Safe Driving

WSH Innovation Awards 2016 for Logistics and Transport Sector aims to recognise work teams in the Logistics and Transport sector which have initiated innovative practices or solutions that improve safety and health in the workplace. The Singapore Logistics Association coordinated and organised the participation from companies in the Logistics and Transport sector for this award, which would be presented to winners at the Annual WSH Awards 2016.

An introduction briefing of the WSH Innovation Awards 2016 for Logistics and Transport Sector by WSH Council was conducted on 01 February 2016. Companies are encouraged to take part in this inaugural award.

Details concerning the award criteria, administration, Guidelines and Application Form are found in www.sla.org.sg.

The closing date for application is 4 April 2016.

The annual Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards are presented by the Workplace Safety and Health Council and supported by the Ministry of Manpower. The awards recognize organizations and individuals who have contributed to achieving excellence in workplace safety and health. The WSH Awards 2016 categories include:

Ms Andelyn Oh representing Sin Chew Woodpaq Pte Ltd was co-opted to the SLA Council at the SLA Council Meeting held on 25 January 2016.

Andelyn is a vivacious lady who started her career in the logistics industry since 1998. With the opportunity to work in both the

MNC and the SME, she built a firm foundation to advance her career. As a Business Manager in Sin Chew Woodpaq Pte Ltd, she also heads the Marketing and Business Development Department, participates in the Management Committee and double up as an internal trainer / coach.

Blessed with a natural flair for interacting and connecting with people, Andelyn develops an immerse interest in human psyche. She pursues a study in holistic health philosophy and its practice for body, mind and spirit during her free time. The knowledge and perspective gain help her to better understand the human psychology and the emotional connections for communication at both the business and social context. Her aim is to excel in public relations and relationship management to bring out the best potential in people.

Andelyn enjoys reading, volunteering and watching dramas related to history, and of course Korean and Japanese ones too.

BCM-Readiness Framework HandbookA collaborative effort between SLA and the Singapore Business Federation (SBF), the BCM-Readiness Framework handbook for companies in the cold chain, warehousing and storage industry was introduced at the Business Continuity Management (BCM) Annual Conference on 06 January 2016.

To be distributed to all SLA members, the standards enable businesses to understand and prioritise the threats to their businesses, as well as put in place a management system to protect against, reduce the likelihood of, and ensure that the business recovers from disruptive incidents.

Affiliation with University of TasmaniaIn yet another development that is beneficial to all TLA Advanced Diploma / Diploma Graduates who wish to pursue further studies, the Australia Maritime College – University of Tasmania has granted accreditation to TLA Specialist Training Programmes for its Bachelor of International Logistics (Freight Forwarding). This is in addition to the present accreditation for its Bachelor of Business.

For the pursuit of the Bachelor of International Logistics (Freight Forwarding), TLA Advanced Diploma graduates are granted 10 units and required to complete 13 units while TLA Diploma graduates are granted 8 units and required to complete 15 units.

Affiliation with SIM UniversityAll graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Supply Chain Management from The Logistics Academy (TLA) are now eligible and can be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (BLSCM) Programme of SIM University (UniSIM).

In its recent Academic Board Meeting, UniSIM granted waiver of the GCE ‘O’ level requirement and aligned the entry requirements for its BLSCM Programme with TLA’s Advanced Diploma in Supply Chain Management. Partnering with the Singapore Logistics Association, the curriculum is designed with a blend of theory and industry practice. The aim is to develop human capital and talent in the effective management of supply chains in increasingly challenging environments. Its target is existing logistics industry employees who are keen to upgrade their skills to assume management positions.

In the recent UniSIM Open House on 27 February 2016, Mr Ong Hui Si, an Operations Executive with a SLA member-company, K C Dat (Singapore) Pte Ltd, talked about the logistics industry and its career prospect. He also shared the challenges that he encountered in his day-to-day operations and how he effectively apply the “Plan-Execute-Control-Monitor” management tool at work.

Mr Ong is a SLA Scholar who won the Bronze Medal of BLSCM cohort in 2015.
