NEWSLETTER June/July 2016
Dear Friends
On pages 4, 5 & 6 of this newsleer you will
find details of the current situaon regarding
Phase 3 stonework and hall and hall kitchen
renovaon and pulpit repairs.
The informaon given reflects the generosity
of members of the congregaon in gi(ing
money towards the costs involved and also
reveals, perhaps less obviously, the extensive
work that goes on behind the scenes in
securing grants and working alongside the
architect with regard to specificaons and
appoinng contractors, to name but two
aspects of what is required.
The two key people involved in this on our
behalf, Michael Herrio, Factor and Convenor
of the Property Commiee, and Kenneth
Ramage, Treasurer and Convenor of Finance &
Management, have already given a great deal
of me and experse to these works, and will
connue to do so over the coming months.
I want to take this opportunity to thank them
and to ensure them of our support as things
progress.
I also draw your aenon to the Dates for
your Diary on page 3 and hope you will be
able to aend as many of these as possible.
We plan to run a bus to Nick Bowry’s
ordinaon in Aberdeen on the 2nd of October
and there will be more informaon about this
in the next newsleer.

Christ Church has supported the work of SECMA (the ScoEsh Episcopal
Church Mission Associaon )for many years, and the annual a(ernoon
meeng on 14 June is a good opportunity to hear about SECMA’s on-going
work and meet members from other congregaons.
At the meeng Hilary Blyth, Provincial Secretary, will give an overview of
SECMA’s new projects for 2016. We shall then hear from Rev Lynsay Downs, Rector of St
James Penicuik (and of St Mungos West Linton) who will talk about exisng links between
West Linton and the Diocese of Cape Coast in Ghana, and her plans to develop these and
other possible overseas links .
Finally Margaret Mungavin will speak about her
visit to Palesne last year, and the connuing
challenges facing people there. Margaret is a
SECMA Central Commiee member who
previously lived in Palesne and maintains strong
links with that country and the projects there
supported by SECMA .
Tea/Coffee/juice will be available in the hall from 1pm, and you are welcome to bring a picnic
lunch to eat there. The meeng will begin with worship at 2pm, and should end with tea at
4pm. All are welcome, and there is space to park right beside the church. If you would like
further informaon, or help with transport, please contact Ceci Stephens on 446 0922

Renovation Appeal – Financial Report
The works being undertaken as described in the Factor’s report
have increased significantly since the inial applicaon was made
to Heritage Loery for grant support. The refurbishment works
together with repairs to the pulpit will cost just under £350,000.
A detailed breakdown of projected costs and sources of income
to fund this significant and excing project are noted below.
The costs are broken down into three categories, those which
will be supported by Heritage Loery/ Historic Scotland, non-
eligible costs relang to the Hall & Kitchen refurbishment and
finally the esmated costs of repairing the pulpit. We have appointed a contractor to undertake the
external stonework repairs and internal works and the costs noted on the schedule are those
submied by the contractor. The costs also include architects fees, conngencies, VAT and allow for
the updang of our website. The laer cost is included in the acvity statement which we are
required to submit as part of our funding applicaon to Heritage Loery to promote the works to the
local community.
Under income we have secured funding of £81,196 from Heritage Loery/Historic Scotland and
under the Listed Places of Worship grant scheme we will be able to reclaim vat of £57,015. We have
secured £15,000 of grants from other funding bodies and we are hopeful of securing further grants
from pending submissions such as the Glaziers Trust, the ScoEsh Landfill Communies’ Fund and a
further applicaon to Heritage Loery to help fund the pulpit repairs. We have secured £62,650 from
our appeal to the congregaon. This includes an inial donaon of £10,000 to ‘kick start’ the appeal
and an anonymous donaon from a member of the congregaon of £13,650 to allow us to achieve
our target. We used the beauful rose window as an aid to promote the appeal and sold 175 panes
including 19 at £1,000, 16 at £500, 28 at £250, 38 at £100, 45 at £20 and 30 at £10. We will be able to
claim gi( aid on the majority of the appeal income which will add a further £15,000 towards our
target. The refurbishment of the kitchen is being funded by a generous donaon from a member of
the congregaon.
Finally to square the circle we will commit £78,000 from Church reserves to meet our esmated
expenditure. This is more than was forecast when our inial submission was made, however we are
undertaking much more than originally planned. As menoned previously we are hopeful of securing
addional funding from small trust & grant bodies to reduce the Church’s contribuon. If we sell
£70,000 of investments this will result in a reducon in annual income of £3,000. This is a shorTall
which will have to be met and at this stage I would ask any member of the congregaon to consider
increasing their regular financial commitment to the Church and anyone who has not made such a
commitment to please make one now.
Finally a hearTelt thanks to those members of the congregaon who have so generously donated to
the appeal to enable these works to progress.

PHASE 3 AND PULPIT - UPDATE FROM FACTOR
As advised at the AGM in November, it had been ancipated that
the Phase 3 works would commence in early April. However, in the
interim, owing to various addions to the schedule of works relang
to the Hall (i.e. access, toilets, kitchen and the main Hall itself),
there has been an expected and inevitable delay whilst the
documentaon and funding requirements have been revised
accordingly prior to being re-presented for further consideraon
and raficaon by our primary funding partners, namely The
Heritage Loery Fund and Historic Scotland. I am pleased to be able
to report that these negoaons are now all but complete and our Architect is expecng the green
light to proceed within the next month. It is thus now ancipated that the works shall finally get
under way by the end of June and last some six months. Priority shall be afforded to the Hall in
order that as much as possible of the work required there shall be completed over the course of the
summer holiday period. It is planned that the Hall shall be returned to use by the end of September.
Meanme, addional negoaons are well underway to determine a fully funded plan for the
repair of the Pulpit. It will come as no surprise when I emphasise the complexity of this project. The
work is specialist in nature and will be challenging in its execuon. Three possible approaches are
currently being considered: one to enrely disassemble and remove from site; a second to raise the
pulpit itself (weighing two tons) in situ; a third to cradle and temporarily re-site within the Church,
all whilst the floor base and supporng pillars are repaired and strengthened. Quotaons are
presently being obtained from suitable qualified and experienced contractors and applicaons are
being lodged with The Heritage Loery Fund and other potenal grant funding partners. Upon
present reckoning, the earliest that any works are going to begin is September. I fully appreciate the
frustraons and inconvenience associated with this project but please be paent for it is far from
straight-forward, is going to be expensive, and it is obviously imperave that we do our very best to
get it absolutely right. Michael Herrio , Factor
NEW ASSOCIATE RECTOR FOR CHRIST CHURCH
As advised in previous newsleers and other communicaons, vestry had decided that as Maggie and Nigel
Rode would be rering from the shared post of full me spendiary Associate priest on 17th July , the
opportunity would be taken to adverse for a full me spendiary Associate Rector immediately a(er
Easter.
From the applicaons received two candidates were invited for interview on Tuesday 31st May. A(er
prayerful consideraon and consultaon I am delighted to say that the posion has been offered to the
preferred candidate and been accepted. As some of the details are sll subject to confirmaon I cannot, at
this point, give any more informaon about the Associate Rector designate.
At the me of the post being adversed it was communicated to the congregaon that full informaon
could be found on the website , and paper copies of this informaon were also made available at the back of
church and from the church office. I do hope those of you who took me to look at these details found
them interesng and encouraging.
On the facing page you will find an extract from that extensive paperwork which I hope will help us to
prayerfully prepare for the arrival of the new Associate Rector, and informaon with regard to the person
appointed, and a date for their instuon, will be communicated as soon as possible.
Susan Macdonald, Rector
Christ Church Morningside www.christchurchmorningside.org Registered Charity SC003009
The Associate Rector’s role is linked closely to that of the Rector. Together they will form a mutually
supporve team within the larger teams of clergy, lay staff, vestry and other lay leaders, helping to
empower the congregaon for its mission and ministry, in its worship, Chrisan development, growth, and
discipleship, and in its prophec presence in the local and wider community.
The Associate Rector will engage in nurturing and developing the exisng ecumenical and emerging
interfaith connecons in the local area and across Edinburgh. Within the congregaon’s vision for mission,
the Associate Rector will be willing to explore new opportunies and models of ministry.
Main Du2es of the Associate Rector
Spirituality
The Associate Rector will have a mature spiritual life that feeds her/his ministry. His/her thoughTul and
prayerful commitment to the Chrisan faith will support the congregaon to grow and mature in the
developing spirituality of today’s world. It is our hope that the Associate Rector will have an
understanding of bapsmal living with its implicaon for faith journeys, for mission, and for collaborave
ministry of all four orders of the church.
Worship
In collaboraon with the Rector, the Associate Rector will assist in leading Sunday, Fesval and weekday
worship, including the support and resourcing of lay led worship. She/he will also meet regularly with the
Rector and Director of Music to review and plan liturgy and music at Christ Church.
Pastoral care
The Associate Rector will engage in the pastoral work of the church through vising and supporng
individuals and groups as well as being involved with the exisng extensive Visitors’ scheme. She/he will be
responsible for devising and providing support and training for all those involved in offering Pastoral Care,
both ordained and lay.
Educa2on and Forma2on
The Rector and Associate Rector together will work with others in furthering the development of the
spiritual and faith development aspects of church life for all ages and learning styles which comes under the
umbrella of our extensive Journeys in Faith programme, which plays a significant part in the life of Christ
Church.
Looking outwards
The Associate Rector will consolidate and develop a social jusce network from the already established
connecons and acvies within the congregaon and wider community. She/he will also consolidate and
develop exisng ecumenical and inter faith connecons.
Management
The Associate Rector will aend and parcipate in vestry meengs. In addion, the Associate Rector may
be requested to aend some Vestry sub-commiee meengs.
Person Specifica2on
The Associate Rector needs to be able to balance the calm sllness of prayer with the creave energy to
inspire the congregaon. He/she will be a person willing to collaborate with and support the vision of the
Rector, while offering her/his own insights and skills. Ulmately, we are looking for somebody who has a
love of God and of God’s people in all their diversity, and who has a palpable passion for God’s mission as it
unfolds among us.
