Protected Industrial Action Thursday 25 February
An email has been sent and details are available on the College Facebook page and website about Thursday. We ask parents/guardians to make alternative arrangements if possible as we will have limited staff due to this industrial action. The tuckshop will be closed on the day. Students who attend must bring their own work, texts, laptop and some reading. Staff available will provide supervision and support with bell times and breaks at the usual time. We anticipate most children will not attend school. Consequently to assist regarding absence, we ask that you notify only IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ATTENDING via email to [email protected]. We will subsequently advise you via sms, if your child is absent.
Reception, SAO, Administration Offices and Main Staffroom Closed
As a result of a failed water pipe on Wednesday evening, flooding of this area was extensive. Insurance assessors are overseeing the process of removing carpet and skirting boards throughout and parts of ceilings on the lower level. Full assessment of the damage and subsequent repair will follow. It will be a lengthy process. During this first phase of clearing, drying out, assessing the damage and determining timelines for a return to each area, we have moved Reception, SAO, the Administration Team and 27 teachers to the library.
Limited library services will be available during this first phase. Full IT service will still be available from the support desk. Parents, guardians and visitors
are asked to go to the Mary MacKillop Buildings Resource Centre reception desk on arrival at the school where you will be welcomed and assisted by our friendly, helpful staff. As frustrating as the inconvenience is we are fortunate that it is only flooding and look forward to positive news when we meet the Site Manager on Monday. We thank Mrs Cartlidge and the Library Staff who will suffer most from this disruption as their service and contact with students is compromised.
Welcome to Our Visitors on Tuesday
This week we welcome prospective parents and students to the College. We trust they will enjoy their visit while classes are running. Previously College Tours ran from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Our Tours have always endeavoured to provide visitors with a feel for the College tone/climate, the opportunity to meet and talk with students and the convenience of gathering all they need to proceed with an enrolment application after meeting the Principal and members of the College Administration team. This will continue on Tuesday as we introduce the new format during the school day. Our appreciation to Ms Delves, Mr Shaw and teachers who will welcome visitors into classrooms.
Opening Liturgy
Our appreciation to Mrs Maitland, Ms Young, Mr Faughey, the Choir, Mr Browne and the students in the AV and Sound Crew for preparation and support for the Opening Liturgy. Fr Ken presided congratulating the Seniors, welcoming the new students and commending their choice of theme ‘You are the Light of the World’. Fr Ken

also commended to all this Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. In his Lenton Pastoral Letter Archbishop Coleridge wrote “For all of us the Jubilee Year is to be a new experience of God’s mercy, so that we can in turn become a more powerful experience of God’s mercy for others, especially those in need of it.” Archbishop Coleridge has invited each of us to reconcile through the Sacrament of Penance so that we might, in finding mercy, be more merciful.
We thank the Senior students and senior leaders for their pledge to serve the College; to respect, care for and support all students; and for the very positive way they have started 2016. This promises to be a very good year in the life of this great school.
2016 Art Show 29-31 July
This is another Marymount Combined Schools Art Show Year. A gala opening on Friday 29 July will follow months of preparation (Approximately 10 meetings) by the Art Show Committee. Members of the P&F from both schools will be joined by parents and friends with organisational skills, enthusiasm for our schools and a passion for excellence (not necessarily in the Arts). We will certainly have great support from our Visual Art Department and Mr O’Keefe; our Drama Department and Mrs Howe; our Music Department and Mr Faughey; our Dance department and Ms Press. What we need are parents who enjoy a challenge and working with others to put on a good show.
The inaugural meeting of parents to form the 2016 Art Show Committee will be: Tuesday 1 March 2016, 6:00pm–7:00pm, Venue: Mary MacKillop Resource Centre, Marymount College
Drop-Off/Pickup and Car Park
We know 2017 will be a wonderful change, with a second schools’ entry and exit available via Sunlight Drive to Mary, Mother of Mercy Church car park. However, our new facility, this year is working as well as we might have hoped at this stage.
For it to be more efficient, drivers must respect that the drop-off/pickup is ‘Kiss & Go’ and stay in their cars. Passengers must be ready with all their gear to exit/enter the car and do so immediately on arrival/departure. Drivers must be safety conscious as passengers exit/enter the car and work with the ‘cannon’ or ‘group of nine cars’ that arrive at the ‘Kiss & Go’ together and that depart together. Sets work best. Individuals who break up the ‘cannon’ cause delays.

Our thanks to the parents and students who attended this week’s Senior Schooling Information evening.
While the amount and detail of the information presented can sometimes be a little daunting hearing it all for the first time, parents always remain appreciative of the program delivery. Such information sessions have been typical of our approach to settling students into their two years of study towards graduating from high school.
We have, and will continue to present to Year 11 and Year 12 students important information regarding the necessary processes of assessment, reporting and certification of any and all Senior qualifications; whether they be OP, QCS Testing, VET competencies, etc. We have reminded them of their responsibilities in this area, with references to our policies and practices in relation to assessment deadlines, assignment
submissions and the like. These have been presented in previous College newsletters.
It is important that parents are aware of the many important processes which are, in many ways, a reflection of the equally significant demands imposed upon us by the QCAA, in order that equity and fairness across the system is achieved for the good of all Senior students looking to graduate with genuine qualifications and rewarding pathway opportunities. Please contact me at the College if you seek further clarification in these areas.

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORSBalancing the pressures of school and life as a young person can be stressful. Students may be struggling with their projected results and how this will impact their post school options. The fear of failure and lack of prospects from poor results are major stressors for many young people. It's important for young people to remember that 'you are not your score’. Also, parents and young people need to remember the benefits of maintaining good health and mental welling throughout the year, in order to reduce the risk of mental health conditions.
General tips for managing stress and promoting wellbeing:• Eat well• Exercise regularly• Get enough sleep (8-9 hours)• Create and maintain a routine• Have a schoolwork and life balance• Make time to relax. Engage in an activity you
enjoy (e.g. sport, listening to music)
Consider using relaxation techniques (e.g. deep breathing, mindfulness exercises). Different things work for different people. • Break tasks down into small steps, so it is
less overwhelming• Be mindful of unhelpful thinking. For
example, worrying about things you cannot control or things that might not happen
• Ask for help. If you feel that the stress is too much, talk to someone who can assist you (i.e. parent, teacher, Yr Coordinator, Guidance Counsellor)
Further advice for supporting students throughout the school year, Year 12 in particular, can be obtained from the following website: https://www.youthbeyondblue.com/do-something-about-it/surviving-year-12

“I now feel as though we have been recognised as the leaders of the entire school”
OPENING LITURGY AND BADGE CEREMONY
On Tuesday at the Opening Liturgy, members of the leadership team were congratulated and presented with their badges.
Our first few weeks of Year 12 and being a part of the leadership team have been pretty hectic so it felt nice to be present to the College Community and be recognised for the work we have done. Events that we have recently been involved with including Valentines Day have been successful and we are working well together as a team. Personally, I have enjoyed running my first assembly and leadership meeting as College Captain and am looking forward to the rest of the opportunities and events that will arise throughout the rest of the year.
Karla MacphersonCollege Captain
To be able to receive our leadership badges and senior badges really felt like the end to a grand beginning.
The honour to be able to stand up in front of our whole school and receive the badge from Fr Ken and Mr Noonan really was a dream come true. The badge shows the rest of the College Community that we as a cohort of Year 12 and leaders of the Marymount Community are willing to show enthusiasm, commitment and assurance for the year ahead. We will lead with pride and honour to make our last year the best it can be.
Josh MuirCollege Captain
Receiving not only my official Leadership badge but also my senior badge at the opening liturgy was a very special experience.
I am sure it was a real eye opener for many of us as we are in our final year of schooling; this is Year 12! I now feel as though we have been recognised as the leaders of the entire school and in saying that, I now have standards that I need to obtain and should also make sure I am setting a good example for the younger grades. My role as the female Vice Captain is to work with every grade at Marymount College and to be a good role model. I hope that I can not only live up to these standards but also inspire others to become more involved within the school.
Carlie RachedCollege Vice Captain
During the opening liturgy on Tuesday morning, we finally received our official leadership badges.
It was such a great feeling and a very honourable moment to have received our badges and to be officially sworn in as the leaders of the College. It was such a privilege to have accepted these badges in front of my friends, family, teachers and peers.
Thomas MoreyCollege Vice Captain
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

Eshwin Rangesh and Rachael O’Connor will represent the College this year at the City of Gold Coast Junior Council Forum each month. We wish them well.
Sporting Achievement
New student to the College Morgan Mathison recently was awarded Most Outstanding Athlete for the Capricornia Region for her achievements in hockey.
Lent
Year Eleven are reminded to be generous during this time of Lent and we are asking each student to donate a minimum of $1 per week for six weeks. This will see us achieve our goal of $1000. It is the Year of Mercy. Students need to consider how they can be merciful. The grade is being asked to listen and respond to situations where people are deprived of their property, their dignity, their feelings and even their lives. In particular, each morning in PC Class the students pray to be compassionate and show mercy towards all people especially the poor and the marginalised.

We extend a warm welcome back to all of our Year 10 students of 2016.
We welcome students and their families into the transition phase of their schooling life, as they become Senior Students of our College.
Please check the letter to Year Ten parents sent out earlier this term. Students have also received assessment schedules and should be marking due dates in their record book.
We are blessed to have a strong team of Pastoral teachers, who will work with the students and keep them accountable for their actions.
The first couple of weeks were frantic, and the students have now settled in nicely to their routines, and familiarised themselves with their new teachers and their new lines of study.
Each student will now have a locker and the required padlock. We thank the students for their patience in this process.
Recent Events
On Thursday 11 February, students were involved in ‘out of the box’ day, where they officially received their laptop for their big year ahead.
Tuesday 16 February we came together as a College community for our Opening Liturgy. Year 12s were presented with their leadership badges, new students were welcomed to the school and each Year Level were given their Year Level Candle. Our theme for this year is ‘You are the Light of the World’.
Personal Development Day
Our Year level candle will be lit during our Year 10 Reflection Day/Personal Development coming up on Wednesday 2 March. We are really looking forward to this day as we get to know our students and work together as a Year 10 group.
We look forward to a busy, yet rewarding term ahead.

On behalf of the Year Eight Community, we would like to congratulate our two STAC representatives for 2016, Thomas Browne and Jamey Reihana.
They were elected by the student body as well as the Year Eight Pastoral teachers. Thomas and Jamey will work closely with the College Vice Captains and other STAC Reps across the school. We were impressed with the enthusiasm and desire shown by over 30 students who had nominated themselves to run for the position.
Pastoral Program
On Thursday this week, we officially commenced the Year 8 Pastoral Program for 2016. The theme for Unit 1 is ‘Boys and Girls with a purpose’. Lesson one was about making the students identify their uniqueness and individuality, and how that fits nicely into their communities. Their task was to create a design specific to them, to be bound together amongst their Pastoral classes in the form of bunting. It was great to see the deepness of thought and energy the students put into their works.
Mobile Phones
Year 8 Students have been made aware that they are not to have their mobile phones out at anytime during school hours. They can leave it in their lockers, to be checked before and after lunch breaks. To inform parents of the process, students seen to be doing the wrong thing, will be asked to take their phones SAO for the day. On the second occasion, we will be phoning home to inform parents. On the third occasion, the phone will be kept at school until a parent or guardian picks it up. We want to congratulate the students on the start they have made regarding phones. Keep it up!

The two best-performing players will play off for the title of Year 12 Badminton Champion
During the last two weeks, students in Year 12 PE have been competing in a badminton tournament in class and at lunch times.
The students were split into four pools of 10 players and they have all had to play everyone in their pool once. The quality of play was very high with lots of long rallies. Only one or two points decided many games. Two players, Dakota Jones and Dominic Larkin, managed to win all of their games in the pool - well done boys!
After the pool games, the top two from each pool and the next two best performed students qualified through to the final 10. The final 10 were:
Pool A Dakota Jones & Matt Cameron
Pool B Alanah McMullan & Isaac Beacall
Pool C Dominic Larkin, James Dornan & Mitchell Grant
Pool D Bryce Kennedy, Hayden Albarran & Nash Nichols
The final 10 games have begun and will be continuing at the end of this week, with the two best-performed players to then play off for the title of Year 12 Badminton Champion next week.

Chris Larkin, the 2015 AFL Queensland Youth Coach of the Year, is as loyal as they come to the Burleigh Football Club, pitching in wherever he can as his three sons progress through the ranks.
Coaching, team managing, sitting on the committee and everything in between, Larkin has been a stalwart for the Bombers junior club.
“It started with my eldest son quite innocently. He had spent a year playing soccer, of which I was coach of his under seven team, but probably seeing AFL on TV, and me having played AFL as a youngster, we thought we would give the local club a go,” Larkin said. “I went along , and there was another dad who encouraged me to get involved, and I did… and 10 years later I still am.”
Coaching is a caper that feels comfortable for Larkin, who pinpointed one area as key.
“I had done a little bit of coaching before hand through schools. I’m a high school teacher, and had been involved in coaching touch football and soccer. I had done a lot of work with kids, so that part of it I suppose came fairly naturally,” he said.
“For me it’s about developing positive relationships with the kids, and trying to make it fun. It was about developing the trust in the relationship that I think is most important.”
2015 posed a challenging year for Burleigh Junior Football Club top age team. A few months after winning the Under 16 premiership in 2014, the Bombers were starring down the barrel of not getting a team together. That’s when Larkin went to work once again.
“We lost more than half the team. They went either to other clubs, like in the QAFL, and some went directly into senior playing groups. So we went from having tremendous success in 2014, to struggling to field a team in 2015,” he said.
“I found myself coaching. It wasn’t something that I initially put my hand up to do, but with my middle son in that age group I wasn’t going to see him or his mates unsupported.
“As it turned out, we played in division 2 of the under 17 competition, and ended up winning the premiership which was a
real credit to the boys. They were so respectful to one another no matter where they came from. I was really proud of them all and the way they played footy.
“I love winning, we all love winning, but there was something more important. We were very fortunate, the way the gods smiled on us. The boys played in the right spirit, and were rewarded for it.”
While all that was going on, Larkin was still able to take a step back and watch on as his eldest son, Liam, debuted in the Burleigh senior team.
“He has learned so much this year, surrounded by some good people. His passion is rubbing off on his little brothers now,” he said.
So what keeps the football fire still burning?
“I ask myself that question quite a bit. I suppose it’s a bit selfish, in that I have three sons, Liam, Bryn and Dominic, so it’s an opportunity for me to share my love of sport with them,” Larkin said.
“But also, seeing kids who had never played division 1 football, and in the earlier years probably struggled to grow into their bodies a bit; to see the satisfaction in their face as they have grown into young men and grown in confidence to be a integral part of a successful team, that for me is the thing that makes me keep going back to training.”
It was a simple sentiment Larkin used to sum up his time at Burleigh, but one that speaks volumes about his selflessness.
“It’s really a privilege, to be able to spend that time with all these kids, watching them grow up to be fantastic people,” he said.
As for what the future holds, don’t think it will just be the kids who transition into the Burleigh seniors.
“I don’t see that I have a role to play coaching, but there are so many people involved in getting teams on field in that senior area. As long as my boys are playing I will certainly give them my full support and help out where I can as time goes by.”
