The win gives the Panthers a season sweep in the series with the Eagles, as well as a point in the 2017-18 Southern vs. State Rivalry Series. A back-and-forth first quarter had the Eagles leading late, 18-14, thanks to an Alexis Brown three-pointer. Georgia State scored the final five points of the quarter, however, to take a 19-18 lead into the second. A fastbreak layup by Amira Atwater had the Eagles back to within a point, 24-23, with 5:33 left until halftime, but Georgia State would embark on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 36-23 lead. Trellanie English-Lurry’s three-pointer at the buzzer would make the halftime deficit 10 points, 36-26. Georgia State opened quick in the third quarter to take its largest lead of the game, 43-28, on a pair of Francesca Minali free throws with 6:51 left in the third quarter. Georgia Southern battled back to make the deficit eight, 48-40, at the end of the third, then went on an 14-4 run to open the fourth quarter, taking the lead on Rhein Beamon’s three-pointer that made the score 54-52 with 5:07 left to play. The Panthers answered by getting a Janessa Murphy three-pointer to retake the lead, 56-54, with 4:24 left and Geor- gia State ended up scoring on seven of its eight last possessions of the game to close out the win. Georgia Southern went 1-for-8 from the field in the final three minutes of the game. Alexis Brown led the Eagles on the day with 12 points, while Hailey Dias-Allen had 10 points and seven rebounds. ABOUT THE MAVERICKS UT Arlington enters Thursday’s ESPN3 contest at 16-10 overall and 10-5 in the Sun Belt Conference, currently ranking third in the league standings. The Mavericks are on a five-game winning streak, defeating ULM 80-53 and Louisiana, 38-34, over the weekend in Louisiana. The Mavericks are led by Rebekah VanDijk, the preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year, who is averaging 14.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. VanDijk is shooting .590 from the field, tops in the Sun Belt and the 18th-best field goal percentage in NCAA Division I. Crystal Allen is averaging 12.2 points per game and has hit 48 three-pointers. In the earlier meeting between the two teams this season, Georgia Southern came away with a 73-68 victory on Jan. 27 - the only loss for UTA in its last nine games. Five Eagles reached double figures in that game, with Nakol Franks’ 16 points leading the way, while VanDijk had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavs. UTA still leads the overall series between the two teams, 5-1. 2017-18 SUN BELT CONFERENCE STANDINGS(as of Feb. 21)

ABOUT THE BOBCATSTexas State is currently second in the Sun Belt Conference standings, sitting at 18-8 overall and 11-4 in the league. The Bobcats have won six of their last seven games, with their only loss in that stretch coming to in-state rival UT Arlington, 61-59, in overtime on Feb. 10. Texas State swept through Louisiana last weekend, defeating Louisiana, 56-53, and UL Monroe, 81-45.Toshua Leavitt (18.6 ppg) and Taeler Deer (16.8 ppg) are 2-3 in the league in scoring, while Brooke Holle (12.3 ppg) ranks 13th in the league in scoring. Holle had a career-high 26 points in the earlier meeting between the two teams on January 25th as Texas State took an 81-56 win over the Eagles. The Bobcats have a 4-2 edge in the overall series between the two teams.

DON’T MESS WITH TEXASThis week will be the sixth trip to Texas in the 45-year history of Georgia Southern women’s basketball. GETTING BACK ON THE GLASSAfter the loss to Georgia State on Jan. 20 - a second-straight loss in which the Eagles gave up 50+ rebounds to their opponent - Georgia Southern was sitting with a -10.8 rebounding margin, last in the Sun Belt and one of only 12 teams in Division I with a rebounding margin of -10 or worse.Since that game, however, the Eagles have had a much better mentality and effort on the boards. In the last seven games, the Eagles have outrebounded their opponents twice - in wins over UT Arlington and UL Monroe. Georgia Southern has given up 279 rebounds over those seven games, while collecting 244 themselves. In last Saturday’s loss to Louisiana, the Eagles got a big effort from senior Alexis Foulks, who grabbed 15 rebounds - the most for a Georgia Southern player in the Sun Belt Conference era. The Eagles have outrebounded three teams this season and have won all three of those games.

SETTLING IN ON A LINEUPHead coach Kip Drown has gone through many different starting lineups in 2017-18 - 11 different ones, in fact, through the first 18 games of the season. Starting with the Jan. 25 contest against Texas State, however, Coach Drown has settled in on the lineup of Alexis Brown, Trellanie English-Lurry, Alexis Foulks, Amira Atwater and Hailey Dias-Allen. The quintet has started each of the last seven games for the Eagles and the numbers have been better since the change. GS is shooting more than 40 points better (.354 vs. .312) over those games, resulting in a scoring bump of 5.3 ppg (58.6 vs. 53.3). The Eagles are also turning the ball over less per game (13.9 vs. 17.5).

ATWATER ASSISTING AWAYSophomore guard Amira Atwater’s school-record 13 assists in the Eagles’ 73-68 win over UT Arlington on Jan. 27 didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. As a freshman in 2016-17, Atwater had six games with four or more assists while serving as the backup point guard to senior Alexis Sams. Locked in a preseason battle with teammate Jakayvea Akins for the starting point guard spot, Atwater has continued to get better, tying her career high of six assists four separate occasions in 2017-18 before the breakout performance against UTA. The Douglasville, Ga., native currently ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in assists per game overall (3.8 apg) and in Sun Belt-only games (4.2 apg). At her current 3.8 apg pace, she will finish her sophomore season with 114 assists, which would make her the first Eagle to top 100+ assists in a season since Carolyn Whitney had 104 assists in the 2006-07 campaign.

HOT SHOOTING STOPS THE SLIDEThe Jan. 27 win over UT Arlington halted a 13-game losing streak for Georgia Southern, which had grown to be the second-longest losing streak in school history. The Eagles shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the win over the Mavericks, which was a season-best, as well as the best for Georgia Southern against a Sun Belt opponent in nearly two years - the team shot 52 percent in a 78-64 home win over Texas State on Feb. 6, 2016.

THAT’S WHY THEY CALL THEM FREEIn order to close out their first league win of the season on Jan. 27, the Eagles needed to be locked in from the free throw line late on Saturday against UT Arlington. Georgia Southern went 6-for-6 from the line in the final 24 seconds of the 73-68 win over the Mavericks, with sophomore Nakol Franks hitting 4-of-4 and sophomore Alexis Brown hitting 2-of-2. Franks went 8-for-8 from the line in the game - more impressive when you consider she had not been to the free throw line in her five previous games. On the year, Franks is 46-of-50 from the line (92 percent), which would lead the Sun Belt, but she has dropped below the minimums to qualify (2 FTM/gm, currently 48 FTM). She is still well ahead of the Georgia Southern single-season record of 87.8 percent, set by Jamie Navarro during the 2009-10 season.

ALL ABOUT THE THREEIn 2016-17, the Georgia Southern women’s basketball team set a new school record by hitting 220 three-point-ers, blasting past the previous school record of 192 threes, set during the 2010-11 season. The Eagles returned three players for 2017-18 who hit 20 or more threes - Alexis Brown, who led the Sun Belt in three-point percentage at 47.6 percent (30-of-63); Nakol Franks (26) and Alexis Foulks (22). This year has been a different story for the Eagles from beyond the arc. The Eagles have made 149 three-pointers through 25 games (6.0 per), well below last season’s av-erage of 7.3 three-pointers per game. Georgia Southern is also shooting 27.0 percent from beyond the arc, below last season’s 30.8 percent. The Eagles have seen a slight uptick in both three pointers made per game (6.5 per) and three-point percentage (27.6) since Sun Belt Confer-ence play began 14 games ago. Nakol Franks (41 threes) leads the Eagles in three-pointers made, while Trellanie English-Lurry has the best three-point percentage on the team at 35.8 percent, ranking 13th in the Sun Belt.

POINTS AT A PREMIUMThe Eagles’ struggles shooting the basketball (32.4 fg%, currently ranked 348th in DI out of 349 teams) have resulted in low-scoring affairs for Georgia Southern. Three times this season, the Eagles have been held below the 40-point threshhold, including the 34-point output on January 6 against Sun Belt leader Little Rock. The 34 points were tied for the fourth-fewest in school history and were the second-fewest in a conference game, below a 32-point output at SoCon foe Chattanooga on Jan. 5, 2004. In the 45-year history of GS women’s basketball, the Eagles have been held to 40 points or fewer 21 times.

HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTSThe Eagles have struggled coming out of halftime through their 25 games this season - Georgia Southern has scored just 328 total points in the third quarter (13.1 points per) and has had seven sub-10 point quarters, while its opponents have scored 433 points in the third quarter (17.3 points per). The Eagles have outscored its last three opponents, however, including outpointing Georgia State, 14-12, on Saturday. In the fourth quarter, Georgia Southern has outscored nine of its 25 opponents.

NABBING THE CONFERENCE WINThe 0-8 start to Sun Belt play in 2017-18 was unfamiliar territory for Georgia Southern - the Eagles had never previously gone 0-7 to start a league slate since Georgia Southern began conference play with the NSWAC in 1985-86. The overall eight-game losing streak, halted by the Jan. 27 win against UT Arlington, was tied for the second-longest in Conference play for the Eagles. Georgia Southern is looking to avoid its worst conference record since the Eagles went 2-18 in the Sun Belt in 2014-15.

TAKING THE LEADEight different Eagles have been the leading scorer in Georgia Southern’s 25 games so far in 2017-18, showing the balance that head coach Kip Drown talked about at the beginning of the season. Nakol Franks has been the leading scorer in the most games (nine) and has the top scoring output so far this year with her 21 points vs. Arkansas State on Jan. 4. Alexis Brown has started to assert herself as possibly the Eagles’ primary scorer, reaching double digits in eight of her last 11 games, being the leading scorer in six of them. Rhein Beamon has also led four times, with Trellanie English-Lurry has led three times. Hailey Dias-Allen has led three times, while Alexis Foulks has led twice. Sarah Moore and Amira Atwater have been the leading scorer once for the Eagles once this season.

FINDING A SCORERThe Eagles are in their final month of the 2017-18 schedule, and Georgia Southern is still searching for a consistent scorer to help lead things offensively. The Eagles’ leading scorer is sophomore Nakol Franks (8.1 ppg), but she has been up and down this season with eight double-digit scoring games, but also eight games in which she scored four or fewer points. Alexis Brown (8.0 ppg) is averaging 10.1 ppg in her 14 Sun Belt games this season and, if she keeps up her stellar offensive play, she could prevent something that hasn’t happened in the 44-year history of Georgia Southern women’s basketball - a leading scorer that does not average double figures. The lowest scoring average to lead the team was Meredyth Frye’s 10.4 points per game during the 2011-12 campaign.

EAGLES IN THE SUN BELT AND NATIONAL RANKINGSGeorgia Southern has been one of the best teams in the league and in the nation in not sending opponents to the free throw line. The Eagles are first in the Sun Belt in fewest fouls (393) and second in fouls per game (15.7), resulting in opponents shooting just 16.9 free throws per game. Nationally, Georgia Southern is 85th in fouls per game and 47th in total fouls committed. The Eagles also have risen to third in the Sun Belt in total steals (226) and steals per game (9.0) and are positive in turnover ratio (+0.7). On the other side, the Eagles are in the bottom 15 nationally in scoring offense (54.8 ppg, 334th out of 349 schools) and their 32.4 field goal percentage ranks 12th in the Sun Belt and 348th among 349 teams in NCAA Division I.

2018 SUN BELT CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTThe Georgia Southern women’s basketball team will take part in the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on March 6-11 at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La. All 12 teams will advance to the tournament, which begins on Tuesday, March 6th, with four first-round contests. With the Feb. 8 win against UL Monroe, the Eagles find themselves 11th in the Sun Belt standings, meaning every win from here on out will be important for seeding purpos-es. In the first round, the No. 12 seed plays the No. 5 seed; the No. 11 seed plays the No. 6 seed; the No. 9 seed plays the No. 10 seed, with No. 9 and No. 8 seeds playing each other. Right now there are six teams within two games of each other in the standings between third and eighth place. With four more games remaining in the regular season, things are quite far from decided. Head-to-head is the first tiebreaker whether it’s a two-way tie or a three-or-more-way-tie. Click here for more information about the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.

HEAD COACH DROWN

kipDROWNHead Coach • Third SeasonSpringfield, MO • Southwest Missouri (1977)

Kip Drown begins his third season at the helm of the Georgia Southern women’s basketball program. Introduced as the seventh head women’s bas-ketball coach in Georgia Southern history on March 31, 2015 by Athletic Direc-tor Tom Kleinlein, Drown enters his 30th season as a collegiate head coach, and his third for the Eagles, heading into the 2017-18 campaign.

Drown and the Eagles showed marked improvement in his second sea-son in Statesboro, going 13-17 overall and 9-9 in the Sun Belt Conference - im-provements of six overall and five league wins from his first season in 2015-16. The nine league wins were the most for an Eagle women’s basketball team since the 2010-11 season. Georgia Southern earned the sixth seed in the Sun Belt tournament and made its first appearance in the league’s postseason. Se-niors Patrice Butler and Angel McGowan each earned All-Conference honors on the year and the team enjoyed the friendly confines of Hanner Fieldhouse, going 8-6 on the season at home.

In his first season in Statesboro in 2015-16, Drown’s team doubled its Sun Belt Conference win total from the previous year, going 7-22 overall and 4-16 in league action including wins over rivals Georgia State and Appalachian State. Drown’s Eagles went 1-1 in overtime games and had eight of their conference losses decide by 10 or fewer points, including five by five or fewer points.

Prior to Georgia Southern, Drown was one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) as well as NCAA Division II. He departed the Division II ranks 15th amongst active coach-es at that level for wins and is currently 38th all-time in NCAA Division II for wins.

Drown led the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo to an overall record of 195-100 (.661) during his tenure which included four RMAC championships (2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010) as well as the 2007 RMAC Western Division crown. Drown also led the program to its first seven NCAA Division II National Tourna-ment appearances (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015).

Prior to his successful run in Pueblo, Colo., Drown coached for four sea-sons at NCAA Division II institution Grand Canyon University where he went 40-69 (.367). While at the helm of the Antelopes’ program, Drown led the pro-gram back to a winning record (16-12) during his third season (2003-04) as well as a bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament. In just four years, he took the team from only four wins in the year before he arrived to a 16-12 record in 2003-04, earning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Coach of the Year Honors for his efforts.

Before heading out west, Drown was the head women’s basketball coach at then NAIA program Georgia Southwestern State in Americus, Ga. In his sev-en years as the head skipper of the Hurricanes he posted a record of 151-70 (.683) and took five of his teams to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams were also frequently ranked in the nation’s top-25.

In five of his seven seasons in Americus, Drown’s teams posted at least 20 wins including his last four seasons when the ‘Canes went 92-40 (.697). Drown and the Hurricanes won the Great American Conference (GAC) championship

three times in 1996, 1998 and 199 and were conference finalists in 1995 and 1997.

Drown began his collegiate head coaching career at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. There, he completed his first turnaround of a program as he turned the Bearcats into proven winners as he helped with the growing pains associated with making the jump from NAIA to NCAA Division II. In six seasons in Bolivar, Drown’s teams went 77-87 (.470) including 47-35 (.573) over his last three years with the program. In 2001, his team earned the school’s first-ever weekly national ranking (11th).

Before becoming a successful collegiate wom-en’s coach, Drown coached varsity high school boy’s basketball in his home state of Missouri for five years, ending his time with an overall record of 97-38 (.719) between Licking High School (1979-83) and Rock Bridge High School (1983-84). His 1981-82 Licking HS squad posted a 24-game winning streak and claimed three tourna-ment titles. The following year, his team finished sec-ond in the AA – Missouri State Tournament.

Drown earned his bachelor’s (1977) and mas-ter’s (1981) degrees from Southwest Missouri State University.
