PATPAT

SKERRYHead CoachHead Coach7th Season • Tufts, ‘927th Season • Tufts, ‘92 When Pat Skerry was announced as the 13th men’s basketball head coach at Towson University on April 5, 2011, he took over a program that had endured 15-straight losing seasons. The gritty Medford, Massachusetts native has revitalized the Towson men’s basketball program, leading the Tigers to consistent success in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Towson enters the 2017-18 season having won 20 games in consecutive games. It’s the fi rst time as a Division I program and the second in school history that Towson has won 20 games in consecutive seasons. Overall, Towson has won at least 20 games in three of the last four years under Skerry. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Towson leads the CAA with most conference victories at 53. The Tigers have participated in a postseason tournament in two of the last four years, including the Vegas 16 in 2016. Skerry was the recipient of the 2017 Gene Bartow award, which recognizes outstanding achievement and contributions to the game. After winning just one game during his fi rst season, Skerry led the Tigers to an 18-13 record in 2012-13. Not only was it the fi rst winning season since 1995-96, it was also the largest single-season turnaround in NCAA Division I history. The achievement did not go unrecognized by his peers as Skerry was selected as the CAA Coach of the Year. He became the fi rst coach to receive that honor since Terry Truax earned back-to-back Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1992-93 and 1993-94. The success continued during the 2013-14 season as the Tigers won a Division I record 25 games. This includes winning their fi rst two postseason games as a Division I program in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The 2013-14 season saw the Tigers end the year ranked 84th in the RPI, marking the fi rst time Towson fi nished the season in the Top 100. The Tigers also received their fi rst votes in the national polls when they were receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The successful season was made even more special with the opening of SECU Arena. The Tigers opened the building with a 72-45 victory over Navy on Nov. 8 in front an arena-record crowd of 4,262. Less than one week later, Towson defeated Temple, 75-69, on their

new home fl oor. The Tigers fi nished their fi rst season in SECU Arena with a 15-1 record. The staple of success during the Skerry era has been defense and rebounding. In three of the past four seasons, the Tigers have led the CAA in fi eld goal percentage defense and rebounding. Skerry has done an outstanding job of mixing in transfers to his recruiting classes. In his fi rst season, Skerry landed Georgetown transfer Jerrelle Benimon. In his two seasons at Towson, Benimon led the conference in scoring and rebounding. He was twice named the CAA Player of the Year, while also earning All-America honors following his junior season. Skerry’s fi rst recruiting class at Towson was ranked as the best in the CAA and sixth among all non-BCS schools, according to CBS Sports. Hardwork is not just limited to the court under Skerry. Since taking over as head coach, the team GPA raised to 2.881. Since the Fall of 1999, six of the top eight semester GPA’s have occurred under Skerry’s watch. During the 2014-15 academic year, the men’s basketball team had fi ve players with at least a 3.0 GPA during the fall semester, and six players with a 3.0 during the spring semester. Skerry has a perfect graduation rate since he became Towson’s head coach with 19 players earning degrees. This past season, the Tigers had a perfect APR multi-year score of 1,000. Skerry has used his platform as a head coach and teamed up with University of South Florida assistant coach Tom Herrion to start Autism Awareness in college basketball. What started as two guys with an idea fi ve years ago, has turned into a national event where hundreds of coaches where the prominent blue puzzle piece pin. The eff ort put forth by both Skerry and Herrion were recognized as the duo was honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Guardians of the Game Service Award. Since taking over as head coach, Skerry has mentored 17 players that were honored as all-conference, all-rookie, all-defense or all-academic by the CAA.

2017-18 TOWSON TIGER BASKETBALL

Today’s GameTowson is looking to extend its home court winning streak to 15 games. This is the end of the fi rst of two three game homestands for the Tigers. Towson has won both games by double digits and going back to last year, have won four straight home games against CAA competition by double digits.

Last Time Out For TowsonTowson defeated the College of Charleston, 73-62. The Tigers had fi ve players reach double fi gures in scoring: Zane Martin (16 points), Brian Starr (12), Mike Morsell (11), Justin Gorham (11) and Eddie Keith II (10). Alex Thomas pulled down a season best nine rebounds. The Tigers led 45-26 at halftime and held off a second half Charleston charge. The Tigers shot 43.1 percent.

A Look At HofstraHofstra (9-7, 2-2 CAA) is coming off a 2-1 week as the Pride earned a road win over Northeastern last Tuesday before closing the week with a split of their home games, defeating James Madison and falling to Elon. Despite the loss to the Phoenix, Hofstra got two incredible individual performances against the Phoenix as junior Justin Wright-Foreman scored a career-best 39 points, while senior Rokas Gustys pulled down 23 rebounds. Wright-Foreman has pushed his scoring average to 25.4 points per game, to rank third in the nation. Wright-Foreman has scored in double fi gures in 38 straight games. It’s the fi fth longest streak in the nation. He has scored 20 or more points 13 times and has topped the 30-point mark four times. Gustys also shot up the leaderboard in his area of expertise as his 11.6 rebounds per game now ranks sixth nationally. Eli Pemberton contributes 15.3 points per game.

Last Meeting Against HofstraTowson limited Hofstra to 28.6 percent shooting after intermission and rallied from a 10-point second half defi cit to claim a 69-65 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game at SECU Arena Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017. Deshaun Morman led three Towson players in double fi gures with 13 points. Mike Morsell scored 12 points. In winning the rebounding battle, 45-33, six diff erent TU players fi nished with at least fi ve rebounds. Justin Wright-Foreman fi nished with a game-high 29 points for Hofstra.

Rank and FileIn some odd scheduling quirks, Hofstra will be the fourth opponent that Towson will face that has played a game against a team ranked in the top fi ve of the Associated Press poll at the time of the game. Hofstra lost to No. 1 Villanova, Elon lost to No. 1 Duke, Oakland lost to No. 2 Michigan State & Charleston lost to No. 3 Wichita State. The rankings are what they were at the start of the game.

SECU SuccessTowson is 52-16 all-time at SECU Arena after fi nishing the regular season with a 12-3 home record. Over the last three years, the Tigers are 29-6. The Tigers have won 14 straight home games, which is the 10th longest in the country.

Rare Six-Pack In its victory over UNCW on Friday, Jan. 5, the Tigers had six players score in double fi gures (Mike Morsell 24, Martin & Starr 12, Eddie Keith II 11, McNeil & Gorham 10). It was the fi rst time since Dec. 28, 1992 that TU had six players score in double fi gures in the same game.
