THE CYGNUS

GAZETTE

Dear Students

At the onset of the new session, after a restful and enjoyable summer break, there

are goals to identify and lots of dreams to be turned into reality. I welcome all of

you back to the exciting world of learning at Cygnus.

Stephen R. Covey in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, has

rightly said: “Habit is the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to

do), and desire (want to do).”

Today, from an early age, a lot of thrust is on Skill Development. Students of the

21 st century have to possess such employable skills which will ensure that they are successful in any career they choose for themselves. Communication skills,

problem solving, teamwork, being proactive, attitude towards work, learning for

life, etc. are a few of these skills.

School plays an important role in the development of all these skills. They evolve over a long period of time enhanced by various activities held at school. It is

imperative to say that students who attend school on a regular basis and

participate in all such activities, including the teaching learning process, and

pro-actively take up responsibilities, tend to develop these skills much more than

others.

In Future Shock, Alvin Toffler said, “Tomorrow‟s illiterate will not be the man

who can‟t read; he will be the man who has not learned how to unlearn.”

So lets all of us, as an integral component of creating the future of our nation and

the globe, ensure that we attend school on a regular basis. Lets remain positive, enjoy whatever comes our way. This happens only when we are in our comfort

zone. It‘s a pleasure to see students running into school and walking back home.

This is a re-assurance that all our children are enjoying and learning skills,

required for them to be successful in future. Wishing the parents, students and staff of Cygnus a very successful, enriching and

befitting year. Kanchan Joshi

"Creativity is the way of

intelligence having fun" -

Albert Einstein On April 24 2017, the

school had organized a

creative writing competi-

tion for the students of

grade 1 to 10. This

competition was organised to enhance writing skills

o f t h e s t u d e n t s .

Fascinating topics such as

' I built a time machine..,

Angels gave me 10 hours etc. were given to the

students. Cygnites had

composed wonder ful

works. This event also

helped us recognize some

'budding writers' in the school! The event was a

huge success and al-

so gave students a chance

to share their vivid

thoughts on paper!

This was where our school's very own Mr.

Praveen Maripelly was aiming to go as he stood at the foothills of Everest at Lukhla on

14th April,2017. His head raised high and his spirit even higher. It was a journey full of highs and lows as he climbed a 63 km trek

to Everest base camp. The road was full of snow, rocks and glaciers, but none could stop his determination. His final aspiration

was to perform 108 Surya Namaskars at the Everest base camp.

After 8 long days of arduous trek, Mr. Praveen finally reached his destination. It was as he described 'dreary and cold' and

he was beginning to lose hope. But then he found a ray of hope, which he used as his beacon in the darkness to overcome his

fear. He completed 108 Sun salutations as his offering to the al-mighty. This entire story is an inspiring tale of hard work and de-termination and it could not have been possible without all the

efforts by his guide. Congratulations Sir!! We draw motivation from you!!

INNOVATION WEEK

The Cygnus Gazette Volume 4 Page 5

With every new innovation, life

around us changes for better. Keeping this as our theme

Cygnus World School organised a week of innovative, riveting and ingenious activities for

Cygnites of Grades I to XII from 15 April 2017 to 21 April 2017. Children created a fantasy

world of Box cities, Matisse cut outs, Giant Masks, and

marvelled at the engineering challenges offered to them. The D o o d l e b o a r d s , T h e

Inspirational Board, Process Art Sculpture, Innovate Your Straw,

and Pay It Forward brought out latent talent and unique thinking in our children. A

spectacularly enjoyable and thoroughly successful week!!!

Creya Summer Workshop

Education is a natural process carried out by the child, and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in

the environment" - Dr. Maria Montessori Nothing can beat an exciting hands-on experience to expand one's own knowledge. The charm of a field trip isn't just the subject, but it is the break in everyday life and the journey that expands the children's minds to other avenues. With this belief Cygnus World School had organized an "Out and About" trip for the students of grade 1 to 7, to have a learning experience outside the classroom. The Cygnites had visited the balloon factory, Sayajibaug zoo with the joy train, holy places like the Swaminarayan temple and the gurudwara, fire station and a remarkable art centre in

Vadodara. At the end of the day, students had enriching experiences which were beyond the four walls of a classroom ,along with having a wonderful time!.

Creativity is intelligence having fun. There was a Creya Workshop organized by Cygnus World School during the summer break giving curious minds a chance to create and present their lego pieces as well as engineering projects. Students of the primary section created various animals and their habitat going with the theme of ‗Habitat of Animals‘, while senior students made heavy-duty machines to carry loads or to push things—Robots as guards, Harvesters, Bomb Detectors etc.. Primary and secondary students made our school proud by presenting brilliant projects in front of the parents. It was truly a Summer of Discovery!!!

CBSE Workshop for Teachers by Centre of Excellence, Pune

Parents Orientation by Principal Ma‟am

Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those teach art of living well.” - Aristotle

With this vision, Cygnus World School organized a two day workshop on ‗Classroom Management‘ with Ms. Aarti Ohri, Academic Head of EduConcept, Ahmedabad and Mr. Kush Kulshreshthra, Principal, Vibrant International Acadamy, Surat. The Workshop was a great learning experience for teachers and its components included maintaining discipline, being prepared, establishing routines and rapport with the students, effective time management, positive class environment, aspects of instructions for students, Management of hands-on activities, Strategies for improving classroom transitions and effective non-threatening communication by the teacher.

Motivational Workshop for Teachers

Ms. Kanchan Joshi, Principal of Cygnus World School welcomed the parents to the

orientation meeting held on 22nd April‘ 2017 in the A.V Room. Our Principal conducted an informative orientation meeting, on 22nd April, for the parents of grade 10 and 12.

Ma‘am spoke about the pattern of ‗Assessment Evaluation‖ to be followed by the school from this academic year. She clearly discussed the norms and the guidelines on tests, exams, projects and group activities given by CBSE.

The interaction was highly fruitful and the parents were happy to be involved at every stage by the management and were looking forward to more such informative meetings.

A motivational workshop was conducted for the faculty of

Cygnus World School during the summer break whose main aim was to inculcate team building and team spirit in all of us.

It was conducted by Dr. Vijayam Ravi, an eminent educationist. There was a lot of positivity during the workshop and the faculty members gained a lot of constructive things

from the workshop which they will be able to definitely use in their daily dealings in the school, which will in turn help in the smooth running of the institution and the students will be able

to reap its benefit.

International Yoga Day

Flipped Class

"Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self."

On 21st June, 2017 Cygnus World School had celebrated "World Yoga Day" by organizing a yoga session in the school auditorium. Various Asanas were demonstrated and students were encouraged to do the same, and were enlightened with the importance of yoga. Teachers also showed active participation and everyone felt relaxed and fresh after the tranquilizing programme.

We Learn

10% of what we read

20% of what we hear

30% of what we see 70% of what we discuss

80% of what we experience 90% of what we teach to

others!!

- William Classer

Flipped Classrooms occur when students

don the role of teachers and teach a given

topic to their classmates.

The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model

which shifts instruction to a learner-centered model. It is an innovative method of teaching the students as the teaching-learning

process happens through them.

It was conducted as a project, at Cygnus, for

grade 6 - 9.

Various topics in Math, Science, and the languages were assigned to different groups of children. They prepared PPTs, gathered

videos and information from the internet took up text readings etc. with their peers. Essentially they taught the sub topic given to

them to their own class. They were of course guided by their respective subject teachers,

who steered them in the right direction.

It was an enjoyable learning experience for both the sides – the students who were teaching and the ones who were being

taught.

Inquiring Minds Engrossed in Work

At Cygnus we believe in the quote put

forth by John Holt – ―Learning is not the product of

teaching. Learning is the product of

the activity of the learners.‖ Hence we provide our students an

opportunity to perform various activities. This gives the learners a

platform to explore on their own and

learn in a more engaging manner.

MY NEW LAPTOP IN MY BAG

My new laptop in my bag

My dress with its tag

My shoes up to date

Could you guess the rate?

My shiny sofa in my room

Smelling good due to perfume

I sit on it for a while

Then wade out with a great smile.

There I see a beggar

Covered with dirty rag

He walks towards me

And asks for a penny

I thought for a second

―I don‘t donate money‖ I reckoned.

Then the beggar walked ahead

And met a man who was half dead

He shivered from hunger

And did a huge blunder.

Took his wallet out of his pocket

It was empty, so gave his locket

The beggar smiles

And walks miles

I then realized my mistake

Which in future will I never make.

I am so keen

To make all your lights go green.

BIG QUESTION???

Sonatina Ma‟am: In general I like to do things which have to do with

seeing things, thinking and observing, differently, like reading and

watching films.

Sonatina Ma‟am: I think for someone to see art for what it truly is in this world, they have to have an understanding of art which comes from the initial stage, which could be school level. Once their eyes

become sensitive they see not only art, but the world clearly.

Getting to Know My Teacher

Ms. Sonatina Mendes, Art Teacher

Avi: What role do you think art has to play in today‟s world?

Avi: What are your interests besides art?

Avi: Who is your role model/someone you look up to?

Avi: What do you think would happen in a world without art?

Sonatina Ma‟am: Ms. REKHA RODWITHIYA, my teacher, who also happens to be a very dear friend, is my role

model. She epitomizes how we can bring art and life together and therefore be an artist.

Sonatina Ma‟am: Without art we would be denied the simple joys of seeing, observing and understanding.

Avi: Which area in the world do you think is the most unique and diverse in terms of art forms?

Sonatina Ma‟am: I believe all countries have something unique to offer, but three countries come to my mind.

India, because of its range in all aspects. Egypt, because of the history of architecture and Italy for the history of

painting in the medieval period.

Parents Opinion Reema Tilokani: As per my views, social media is a boon as it is the best source to interact with people living at a distance. It

also keeps us updated with the daily happenings around the world. Nowadays it has become a good source for marketing. It is a

boon so far as it is not misused. Himanshi Singh: In today‘s world connectivity has changed relationships, politics, economy, trade and communication. You

are better informed, communication is easy, you can share easily, you can work from home, raise funds, transcend the

generation gap and connect with business clients. Social media is definitely an integral part of today‘s world and a BOON.

Students Opinion Mihir Shah (Grade XII): There are of course many advantages of social media but there are many disadvantages which makes

it a bane—Youth simply wastes its time posting and viewing things on it. Rather they can explore somewhere else, It sometimes provides exposure to many things which are inappropriate to some individuals, It even creates an opportunity for robbers and wrong doers, It makes spreading rumours and negative messages easy as they spread like wildfire. Shruti Rajgor (Grade X ): Rather than boon or bane, we can term it as a necessary evil. Social media connects us to unreachable parts of the world and is a medium through which we get to know about the current affairs But, just like a coin has two sides, it has a list of disadvantages too. We can‘t physically see who is on the other end. We just have to assume and believe it. That is something today‘s generation is unaware, actually unconcerned about. To conclude, it is necessary and only

the perspective can classify it as boon or bane.

Educators Opinion Pinal Patel: Social media is a new way of communication through social networks like – Facebook, MySpace, Instagram, Orkut and many more. Social media is indeed a boon for human race as it is bringing people closer and letting them communicate with each other without any fear and barrier. But still one needs to be cautious of what level of personal information they are revealing on social networks. Hadrian D‟Cruz: In today‘s world when everything is changing at a fast pace, it is essential to be updated with the latest trends and technology. I believe that social media is truly a boon to our society as it is the quickest means of making connections. The whole idea of communicating on social media is fun and the sharing of experiences with others. The very fact that it‘s called ‗social media‘ makes it evident that this channel is all about having an open mind and letting the creativity flow. In fact the saying ―It‟s a small world‟ has literally become true.

Social Media Bane or Boon?
