Teams will be limit-ed to entering 6 team divisions and a maximum of 3 soloists at Regionals. Multiple teams from a school will be allowed (i.e. Drill Team vs. Dance Team or JV vs. Varsity) as long as individuals are not competing on both teams. For example, if the same dancer competes on both the Dance Team and the Drill Team for their high school, those teams will then need to share the 6 maximum number of routines. An individual may not compete against her/himself in the same division/category (i.e. two X-Small Dance routines).

a quality of movement that uses the music and/or lyrics as the guide. Incorporating balance / sustained movement, as well as facial and body emotion, is expected.

DANCE/POMRoutine emphasis must be on the use of pom pon. Teams must use two pompons for at least three-fourths of the routine. Stan-dard school uniforms, dance or military clothing may be worn.

HIP HOPA routine where all dancers perform grounded street-style movement. Difficulty should not be emphasized through tech-nical jazz technique, but rather through specific hip hop styles. For example, styles should include (but are not limited to): body control, isolations, rhythm, pop/locking, tutting, whack-ing, krumping, breaking, etc. Any genre of music may be used as long as the routine as a whole focuses on hip hop style.

MILITARYRoutine must be military in nature with an emphasis on pre-cision & sharpness through the dancer’s entire body. Routine must include: military maneuvers, pattern formations, visual effects, various arm/hand sequences and a variety of marching styles (i.e. glide, high knee, prance, pony, chug, etc). School uniforms or military attire/costume must be worn. In keeping with the military tradition, all maneuvering/marching/traveling must begin on the left foot. All difficulty and technical elements must be in keeping with military style/quality.

DANCE/DRILLRoutine must incorporate a combination of the Military division and Dance division guidelines. (Please read the descriptions of both the Military & Dance divisions before competing in the Dance/Drill division). This routine must incorporate 1/2 dance and 1/2 military movements. (i.e. dance style must not be em-phasized over military style and vice versa.)

KICKRoutine emphasis must be on kicks. Kicks must be the focal point of the routine and must be used for more than 3/4 of the total routine length. Any style of movement may be used, as long as the kicks are the focal point of the routine. Routine must include a variety of kick sequences, as well as a variety of different kick types overall.

JAZZRoutine is rooted within the broad spectrum of jazz dance, uti-lizing vocabulary from any style of jazz dance technique, includ-ing: theatrical, vernacular, technical, stylized, classical/concert, pop, etc. Choreography should include the aesthetic foundation of jazz dance, emphasizing bold dramatic body movements, isolations, contractions, rhythm, musicality, energy/expression and dynamics.

PROP Routine emphasis must be on the creative and visual use of a prop or props. Any style of dance may be used. However, the ma-nipulation of the prop must be the focal point of the presenta-tion, rather than the focus being on the movement of the dancer. The prop must be used in at least 3/4 of the routine. Routine and/or uniform may be thematic in nature, but must not be the focal point of the routine. Standard school uniforms or costumes may be worn.

NOVELTYRoutine emphasis must be on characterization or be of a unique thematic nature. The entire routine must fully express a story line, and may not rely on any prior knowledge (on part of the audience/judges) of the theme’s origin. Routine may include technical dance movements, permitting these movements make sense within the theme, character and story line. Props are permitted but should not be the focal point of the routine. Props should only serve to enhance the story/theme. Themed costumes should be worn. Sets and backdrops are permitted, but not required.

CHARACTER DANCERoutine emphasis must be on using a specific theme, charac-ter, musical theater, or cultural genre of dance. All movements should make sense for the dancers to execute ‘in character.’ Mul-tiple dance styles may be used, but only if each style enhances the theme development. The routine must create the character-ization through the use of music, costuming, choreography, and may not rely on any prior knowledge (of the audience/judges) of the theme’s origin.

A school will be permitted to compete in either Novelty or Char-acter Dance, not both.

MUSIC GUIDELINESNote the music guidelines that are in place for the 2017-18 competition season. Be sure you are familiar with these guidelines prior to taking any competition floor. Failure to comply may lead to disqualification and forfeiture of all fees (registration, admission or otherwise) associated with a team’sperformance.

Music guidelines are being followed at all USA and Varsity Brands events. Competition music must be properly licensed and a team must be able to provide proof of licensing (upon request) at any event where the music is used. If a team can-not provide proof of licensing immediately upon request, the team may be disqualified from the event. For further details visit www.varsity.com/music.In order for a team’s routine music to be featured in a televi-sion broadcast, should this be an option, teams must do the following:• Use an original composition created or commissioned

by you (i.e. an original song and recording to which you own or license the rights by written agreement)

• Additionally, secure the synchronization rights. Not all original music providers can/will provide these rights.

• Submit proof of licensing, as well as synchronization rights, when requested after the event. Music is defined as any recorded sound amplified through the competition sound system.

A sound system will be provided. Speed control is not avail-able. Music checks on the main sound system are not permit-

ted. A representative must be present at the sound system at the time of performance. Advisors/coaches are asked to hold onto their own music until the time of performance and to take music back following the performance. All teams must provide their own MP3 device or smart phone for use on the event provided sound system. Music must be record-ed at the correct tempo. Although it is not recommended due to interference that may be caused during a routine, a smart phone may be used for playing music. No cover may be on any MP3 player so that a jack may be easily inserted into the device. One or several selections of music may be used as long as they follow the music licensing rules.

As of this day, performance times will remain the same regardless of scratches. It is the director’s responsibility to check the schedule for accuracy prior to taking the performance floor.

fee(s) for cancellations past the refund deadline, regardless of payment status. Refunds are processed 2 – 4 business weeks after the event; checks will be mailed 4 – 6 business weeks after the event.

REGISTRATION CHANGESChanges to Divisions or Solo Names - For previously submitted registrations, division/solo name changes will be accommo-dated only if notice is submitted in writing (via fax or email) no later than 21days prior to the affected Regional. Changes to divisions or solo names will not be accepted after the Friday one week prior to the event. No exceptions.

SAFETY RULES VIDEO SUBMISSIONPrior to USA Dance Nationals, registered teams have the option to submit videos to the USA for a comprehensive review of whether the Safety Rules have been met prior to Dance Nation-als. It is preferable if you send a video showing each individual skill that you would like evaluated, rather than the entire routine. These submissions are solely for safety rule evaluations (i.e. skills in routines that include partnering/lifts, and/or tum-bling skills). The video is NOT for determining qualifications for Dance Nationals, for assessing placement in the correct division, nor for appropriateness assessment. Please do not submit a video if your routine does not have partnering/lifts, and/or tumbling skills involved.

“Safety Rules Video” submissions are due in the USA office no later than February 16, 2018. The USA will respond officially in writing to each team’s video inquiry and we will file all vid-eos and official responses for reference at USA Nationals. All submissions must be electronic, and in the file format of either Quicktime for MAC (.mov) or MPEG-4 Format (.mp4). No other file formats will be accepted. Videos in CD/DVD format are not accepted. Please ensure that you note which division each lift or skill is associated. A written request to review the video for safety rules legality must be included. Submission of a routine does not guarantee that it can be reviewed. Note that submis-sion of a routine and/or its elements does not preclude a team from being assessed a penalty while at a specific USA compe-tition, as performances from the video submission may differ from those executed on the competition floor.

All video submissions must be emailed to [email protected]. Note: Teams must be registered for the division that is being requested to have a safety rules review.

TIMINGTiming begins with the first note of music or movement and ends with the last note of music or movement.• Solo Routine: Up to 2 minutes (maximum) per routine - en-

trance and exit up to 15 seconds each.• ALL Dance, Military, Hip Hop, Jazz. Lyrical, Kick, Dance/Drill,

Co-Ed Dance, All-Male and Dance/Pom divisions: Up to 3 minutes (maximum) per routine - entrance and exit up to 30 seconds each.

• Prop & Novelty: Up to 3 minutes (maximum) per routine - entrance and exit up to 1 ½ minutes each.

WAITING LISTSRegistration of teams is first come-first served. Competitions may, and often do, close to additional participants even BEFORE the registration/entry deadline. Teams who have not been accepted to compete due to a “full” Regional will be placed on a “waiting” list. As teams drop from the schedule, teams from comparable divisions who are on the “waiting” list and have paid in full will be added. The “Person to Receive Correspon-dence” will be notified if the team is placed on the “waiting” list and will be updated with the registration status as the compe-tition nears. As teams drop from the schedule, “waiting” list teams will be added, up to the Friday, one week prior to the competition date. A team (s) will not be added to the schedule the week of the event. The USA does not accept registrations on the day of the event. The “Person to Receive Correspondence” will be sent/e- mailed a tentative line up with performance times at least 10 days prior to the competition. These times are subject to change. Coaches must check the final performance schedule posted on usa.varsity.com after 5:00 p.m. (PST) the Wednesday prior to your competition. As of this day, perfor-mance times will remain the same regardless of scratches. It is the director’s responsibility to check the schedule for accuracy prior to taking the performance floor.

VIDEO QUALIFICATION TEAMS MUST BE REGISTERED FOR DANCE NATIONALS IN ORDER TO SUBMIT A VIDEO FOR QUALIFICATION. Teams may not submit their video qualification information without all the proper Dance Nationals registration paperwork submitted. The USA office will place you in the appropriate division(s) of “Open” or “Championship” once the video has been judged. Please note that Dance Nationals registration may close before the entry deadline.

All schools located in areas that do not have USA Dance Region-als may enter by video to qualify for the “Championship” or “Open” divisions. Only the judges’ scores can decide qualifica-tion in “Open” or “Championship” divisions.

Schools should not submit a video entry for any non-qualifying divisions (Solos, Dance/Pom, Dance/Drill, Co-Ed). Teams may simply enter those divisions into Dance Nationals without prior qualification. To request a Video Entry Form, please e-mail [email protected].
