Senior Employees and Retirees

DELTA PIONEERS, INC.

“PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE”

“Keeping the Spirit Alive”

VOL 41 NNATIONAL NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2017 NO 1

Greetings from the National President:

Hello fellow Pioneers,

As I write this greeting, I look forward to Christmas and all the holidays that are yet to happen. As you read this, you will most likely be

looking back at the holidays and how they unfolded in your life. I truly hope yours were full of all that makes you happy and full of Joy.

As we look to 2017, may we find happiness and meaning in our lives. We are truly blessed to live in this very special country and to

have spent years giving our best to such a wonderful company.

As I reflect on this, I see a great parallel to the Delta Pioneers and where we stand today. As we celebrated our 40th

anniversary this year

we too can look back on all that we have accomplished in those years: the ties and friendships that have been nurtured and the sense of

community and belonging that have been maintained. Yet, we look forward to the future with the anticipation of even better things to

come. Our way forward may look different or may seem slightly different; yet at heart we are all “Delta people”. Delta people built this

great company and that same spirit will keep the Pioneers alive and well and continuing to grow.

What is my part in all this, you may ask? Plan to get involved next year! If you have been “on the bench” for a year or two, try one of

your local activities. Make a phone call, contact an old Delta buddy and take them with you.

Remember that the dues are only $15.00 per household per year.

As we look forward, we will be changing with the times and putting ourselves out where people congregate. We will be actively

promoting ourselves on social media and stand ready to incorporate solid new technology into our daily routine. For those not in the

social media world, fear not, we know who you are, where you are, and will continue to stay in touch. Your part is easy. Participate.

Have a good year!

Jim Atkinson

DELTA PIONEERS ANNUAL CONVENTION

This year’s Annual Convention was held October 26-28 at the Atlanta Airport Marriott. Attendees at the Wednesday night buffet dinner

had the opportunity to learn about the various facets, job duties, and responsibilities of the Immigrations & Customs Enforcement

Agency (ICE).

Two of the ICE Special Agents who work Homeland Security Investigations gave an interesting presentation ending with an old case

that involved some rogue Delta ramp agents. Their presentation gave attendees a deeper appreciation for their efforts and work

performed. The Thursday day trip to Chattanooga was enjoyed by all of the participants. On Friday morning a group of attendees was

able to take a guided tour of Delta’s TOC facility-an area that is not generally available to anyone without permission and advance

registration. Thanks to Frank Ayres for making this special tour available to the Pioneers.

There were Pioneers from10 of 21 chapters present at this year’s Convention. The following chapters were represented: ATL, BOS,

FRA, LAX, LIT, MEM, MSP, ORD, PHX, SLC. Despite the challenges of non-rev travel, attendees traveled from AZ, AR, CA, GA,

IL, MA, MO, MN, MS, NM, NV, NY, TN, UT and Frankfurt, Germany.

Next year’s Convention will be held September 27, 28, 29 at the Atlanta Airport Marriott.

Please mark your calendars now and save the dates!!

SEA - WINTER ROOST

Saturday, JAN 28

The 2017 Winter Roost will be held on January 28 from 3PM-6PM at

Classic Eats Restaurant & Bar. It's open to all WA/NW/DL retirees.

The Mark is now known as Classic Eats Restaurant & Bar. Classic

Eats has a great bar menu (no host bar) and food menu. Be aware if

you have eaten at the Mark before, the menu has changed.

Previously there was a happy hour from 3PM to 6PM. However, this

is no longer available. There is parking in the back directly behind

the restaurant plus on the street. This parking lot is available from

SW 151st St. The lot we previously used on the back and side of the

restaurant is now a pay lot. This will be our sixteenth year overall.

We hope to see all the old faces and new ones. Please come and join

us.

SEA - BIT OF INFORMATION

Updated 12/06/2016

The PNW Wallybirds hold two events each year. The Summer Roost

(picnic) and the Winter Roost at Classic Eats located at 918 SW

152nd Street, Burien WA 98166. The PNW Wallybirds subsidize the

events from the treasury. The treasury is sustained by the yearly dues

of paying members. We understand not all attendees are paying

members of the PNW Wallybirds and we are alright with that. This

year we would like to ask non-paying members who attend our

Winter Roost at Classic Eats to consider a voluntary donation to

assist in our Winter Roost cost. This is strictly voluntary and if you

do not feel comfortable with a donation, no problem. No one will

approach you asking for money. It's up to you and it can be whatever

amount you wish. If you decide to donate please leave your donation

with John Bozinny, Al Haylor, Cindy Dack, or Dave Saylor.

All four will be at the function. Hope to see you there!

ORD - CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY DINNER UPDATE

Well, despite the unscheduled snow storm, our 2016 Christmas

Holiday dinner held on December 4 was a success. The Chapter

President personally thanks all of you for making the journey. We

had 67 guests attending with many from out of town (Georgia, Ohio

and Wisconsin). A vote was proposed and taken by those in

attendance on a change of time for our Holiday event. A show of

hands vote resulted with 80% of the guests voting to change the

start time of the 2017 annual event to a day time event from an

evening event. Many reasons were given to promote this change:

1. Weather, 2. Many of us do not like to drive at night, 3. Increase

the guaranteed attendance. At this time only the timing of the event

will change. When contacting the Chapter President, please be sure

to use the [email protected] email address.

The Chicago Windy City board members Bob Nelson, Frank

Ohmer and Marge Diebel were acknowledged and presented with a

Delta Air Lines 737-900 aircraft model and thanked for their

service to the Pioneers.

HEADED SOUTH FOR THE WINTER?

You’re not alone!! More than 1 million retirees head to Florida

alone, with plans to stay for at least 5 months. Securing your primary

home, gathering important documents, and having someone check

your mail while you are gone are all important tasks that must be

done before you head out, however, many retirees forget to ensure

they are prepared for emergencies.

Before you head out on your trip, locate the best doctors, specialists,

and hospitals at your destination so you are prepared for the

unexpected. This is especially important if you have any chronic

health conditions. Health Advocate is an excellent resource for

Members of the Insurance Trust for Delta Retirees (ITDR) to utilize

when researching doctors/hospitals. Members are encouraged to

contact Health Advocate at 1-877-325-7265; Option 2.

Additionally, ITDR Medical Plan Members traveling more than 100

miles away from home have access to a Travel Assistance service,

provided by The Hartford through Europ Assistance USA. This

service provides Members, spouses and survivors with assistance

anytime, day or night, with pre-trip information and emergency

medical assistance (once the immediate emergency has been

addressed by local medical providers). If you experience a medical

emergency, contact a local emergency response center first and then

contact Europ Assistance USA at the number on your Travel

Assistance wallet card.

To find out more about these benefits or to obtain a new wallet card

for Europ Assistance USA, call the Trust’s Retiree Service Center

toll free at 1-877-325-7265; option 3.

The meeting was called to order by Daniel Puerto at 3:30p.

A prayer was offered.

Ann Ratterree, VP of Finance, reported that as of 10/24/16 we had $10,930.30 in checking and $25,583.12 in savings.

The convention expenses still need to be paid from these amounts.

Al Hascall, CFO, advised that we are trying to streamline dues payments using something that will work with the Delta

Credit Union . We are having difficulty keeping email addresses current. Sandy Tofflemire took over as President of

LAX and Jim Weddle replaced Cecil Tennant in LIT.

Pam Webb, VP of Membership advised that as of October 7, 2016 there were 2200 Pioneer memberships and including

spouses that makes 3563 members.

Frank Ayres, First VP, thanked everyone who worked to put this convention together.

Sue Sheriff, VP of Communications, requested anyone with suggestions or ideas for improvements send them to her at

[email protected].

Paul Schmidt advised that from the National Advisory Board there are several proposed changes to the Delta Pioneer By-

Laws.

1) Article 5 – Duties and responsibilities of Officers section 1. Add - Each Officer will supply and have

access to a computer with security on it. If needed the Pioneers will provide financial software. There

are twelve meetings plus the annual convention. Add – All officers must attend seven (7) complete

meetings, including via Skype or telephone call in. Failure to do so means the officer will be removed

from their position. This was voted on and passed.

2) Article 7 section 3 – Election – Add - If an officer is removed for failure to meet the attendance

requirements of seven complete meetings in a year, that officer shall be replaced by a Pioneer appointed

by majority vote of the Executive Board until a duly elected representative is elected at the next Annual

Meeting. This was voted on and passed.

National Board of Elections - Daniel asked Paul Schmidt to handle this for him.

Offices open for Election October 28, 2016 – October 2017

National President (1 year) Jim Atkinson

First Vice President (1 year) Frank Ayres

Second Vice President (1 year) J.J (Jon) Maynard

Chief Financial Officer (1 year) Al Hascall

Office Manager (3 years) Mary Fowler

Vice President of Finance (3 years) Ann Ratterree or Kathy Zolad

Other offices and terms with the years remaining are:

VP of Communication (2 years) Sue Sheriff

Executive Secretary (1 year) Larri Milligan

VP of Membership (1 year) Pam Webb

It was moved and seconded to accept all uncontested positions. The motion passed.

Both Ann and Kathy were asked to give a brief synopsis of their qualifications for this position. When the presentations

were complete Jim Gregory and Al Hascall passed out paper ballots for the contested board position. After all were

marked they collected and counted them. It was a tie vote! Once again Jim and Al passed out paper ballots to have

another vote. After being marked they were collected and counted. This time the vote indicated Kathy Zolad was elected

to the Vice President of Finance position.

Jim Atkinson, the new President, took over presiding at the meeting. He reviewed the term limits for the Officers just

elected to the board positions.

New Business: Glenn Schultz suggested it would be more convenient for him traveling to have the convention with a

cocktail hour and dinner from 5p -8p and done by 9p. This would be one hour earlier than this year.

It was announced that the 2017 contract had been signed for the same Marriott Hotel we are in this year. The dates will be

pulled up to September 27, 28 and 29, 2017.

There was a lot of discussion about future conventions regarding both the location and the time of year they are to be held.

A question was asked about which is the largest chapter. The answer is Woolman in ATL with 647 members.

Jim Atkinson adjourned the meeting at 4:30p.

Respectfully submitted: Larri M. Milligan, Executive Secretary

Approved date - December 7, 2017
