THE DOWNTOWN MARKET EDUCATION FOUNDATION RECENTLY TEAMED UP WITH THE GRAND RAPIDS URBAN LEAGUE TO TEACH CULINARY SKILLS AND NUTRITION TO A GROUP OF FIFTEEN YOUNG ADULTS. OUR CHEFS TAUGHT BASIC KNIFE SKILLS, CULINARY SCIENCE, AND COOKING HEALTHY ON A BUDGET.
These young leaders came back for chef demonstrations, planted gardens with heirloom vegetables grown in the Market Greenhouse, and were mentored by Market Hall merchants. At the end of their summer, they
planned, prepped, and served dinner, along with delivering their business “pitch” at the Downtown Market.
Through partnerships like these, the Downtown Market Education Foundation is helping to improve community health through nutrition and
economic development, one plate at a time.
If your business, family, or non-profit would like to get involved with the mission of the Downtown Market Education Foundation, please contact Kate Klemp,
Development Director, [email protected] about ways to donate, volunteer, or create new partnerships.
IT WAS A WONDERFUL START TO TEACHING OUR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS
HOW TO BEGIN IN THE FOOD BUSINESS. THEN, WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE THE
PARTNERSHIP TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL.- LISA BUTLER, DIRECTOR FOR HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND
