ANSI/AWWA C151/A21.51 Standard for Ductile-Iron Pipe, Centrifugally Cast for Water.

These fabricated products are produced using a patent pending welding process and Ductile Iron pipe conforming to the requirements of ANSI/AWWA C151/A21.51.

ANSI /AWWA StandardsU.S. Pipe and Foundry Co. LLC offers welded outlets in a wide variety of configurations and sizes. They are similar in function to some fittings, but are available in a much wider selection of branch to parent pipe diameter, branch pipe location, and outlet configuration. Also, lead times for welded outlets are typically much shorter.

U.S. Pipe offers radial and tangential outlets. The radial outlets are similar to “tee” type fittings and are available in sizes shown in Table 2. The tangential outlets are similar to a “tee” type fitting with the difference being that the outlet is offset from a radial position, i.e., coming off the bottom of the pipe as for a drain. Tangential outlets are available in the sizes shown in Table 3.

Contact your U.S. Pipe Sales Representative or our Customer Service Department (866) DIP-PIPE (347-7473) for more information.

REVISED 3.17U.S. PIPE WELDED OUTLETS BRO-063

Outlets in Ductile Iron pipe shall be fabricated by welding sections of Ductile Iron pipe manufactured in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C151/A21.51. The welding electrode and the welding procedure employed to weld the Ductile Iron pipe components together shall be the choice of the manufacturer. The welding procedure shall be qualified in accordance with a nationally recognized welding entity (e.g. American Welding Society).

The finished pipe fabrication shall meet the following requirements:

• Welded outlets include radial outlets and tangential outlets. Outlets shall have a minimum safety factor of 2.0 based on the rated working pressure rating. Table 1.

• Proof of design testing for the Ductile Iron to Ductile Iron welding process shall, at a minimum, include a four point bending test which places the weld bead in tension. The test sample shall be comprised of a beveled and butt welded coupon from which test strips are taken. These test strips of the welded Ductile Iron coupon shall be cut such that the weld bead is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the test strip. The test strip shall be fashioned such that the weld bead is located at the mid-point of a Talbot Strip test apparatus. The test strip shall demonstrate a minimum observed engineering stress of 80 ksi at failure. Additionally, this testing shall demonstrate a failure through the Ductile Iron pipe wall and not along a path defined by the heat affected zone of the weld. This testing shall be conducted in a manner similar to the Talbot Strip test method described in ANSI/AWWA C106/A21.6.

• Horizontal welded outlet connections shall be of a flexible or flexible restrained joint configuration. Rigid type joints (i.e. flanged) shall not be allowed in horizontal outlets.

• Outlet branches must be located at least 18" away from the plain end and 24" away from the face of the bell end of the parent pipe. Multiple outlets on the same pipe must be spaced such that there is a minimum of 24" between the outside surfaces of the outlet branches, no matter the orientation of the branches.

• After the outlets are welded together and prior to finishing, the assembly shall be subjected to a 15 psi air test for leakage. Any outlet failing this test shall be scrapped. No rework is allowed. Upon completion of this test, the outlet shall be stamped to indicate it was suc-cessfully tested. Copies of all test reports shall be available for the owner upon request.

• The minimum Ductile Iron pipe thickness for fabrication of welded outlet pipe shall be Special Thickness Class 53 for 4" - 54" diameter pipe, and Pressure Class 350 for 60" and 64" diameter pipe.

Specification

Installation Cautions • In areas where the parent pipe is a restrained

joint pipe and joined in the run to other restrained joints on both sides, it is important to fully extend the restrained joints (see U.S. Pipe’s TR FLEX® or HP LOK™ Pipe and Fittings brochure) so that unwanted line extension does not over-deflect the attached joints to the outlet.

• Should the pipe embedment soils be structurally weak such that differential settlement may cause the outlet joint to achieve the fully deflected position, static cast fittings are recommended in place of welded outlets in the pipeline.

• CAUTION: Welded outlets should not be subjected to impact or bending forces. Welded outlet joint connections should not be modified with restraint devices that make the connection rigid. The joints of welded outlet fabrications or of pipeline components connected to them should not be over-deflected. U.S. Pipe is not responsible for fabricated products used contrary to instructions.

The following configurations are suggested recommendations for the use and application of welded outlets. These are typical installations showing a wide variety of situations using welded outlets in either radial or tangential orientations. The details show the utilization of flexible joints so that a bending moment or direct loading is not applied to the welded outlet. The details may be used in drawings, project plans or submittals and can be imported to CAD files as well. Welded outlets are not recommended for direct bury in roadways. Roadway applications require the outlet to be housed in a concrete vault or a ductile iron fitting be used. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-866-DIP-PIPE for further assistance.

REVISED 3.17U.S. PIPE WELDED OUTLETS BRO-063

1. Welded outlets are available with the following joint configurations:

• Mechanical joint bell or plain end.

• TYTON JOINT® Pipe bell or plain end.

• TR FLEX® Pipe bell or plain end.

2. Additionally, the branch can be supplied flanged for limited applications such as manhole access or air release. The parent pipe can be configured with any common U.S. Pipe socket. (Please consult your U.S. Pipe Sales Representative for flanged applications.)

3. Pressure ratings are as shown in Table 1 on page 4.

4. Minimum thicknesses for pipe used in the fabrication of welded outlets are Thickness Class 53 for 4" through 54" pipe, and Pressure Class 350 for 60" and 64" pipe.

5. Piping systems must be designed so that bending loads are not applied to the outlet (for example, no fully deflected joints, no rigid joints and no restraining devices that create a rigid joint). TR FLEX® Joints are designed with slack in the socket to facilitate insertion of the locking segments. Provisions must be made to stabilize the pipeline prior to hydrostatic testing to prevent bending loads from being applied to the welded outlet (for example, all joint pullout must be fully extended before the branch is connected to a branch line).

6. Welded outlets are not recommended for direct bury in roadways. Roadway applications require the outlet to be housed in a concrete vault or a ductile iron fitting be used.

7. TR FLEX® or HP LOK™ joints are designed with slack in the socket to facilitate assembly. It is IMPERATIVE that all slack, or pullout, be removed prior to making final connections to the welded outlet to avoid uncontrolled pipeline extension. Such extension can result in unpredictable loading and exces-sive stress on the welded outlet.

8. Unsupported cantilever loading on the branch is not approved.

9. Welded outlets are not recommended in applications of persistent and frequent vibration.

10. Branch lengths are fabricated in accordance with the sketches shown in this brochure.

11. Outlet branches must be located at least 18 inches away from the plain end and 24 inches away from the face of the bell end of the parent pipe. Multiple outlets on the same pipe must be spaced such that there is a minimum of 24 inches of axial separation between the outside surfaces of the outlet branches, no matter the orientation of the branches.

12. No portion of a welded outlet branch shall be subjected to impact or bending stresses during handling, storage, shipment, installation or operation.

13. All coating and lining damage must be repaired before installation.

14. The weld area has a special protective coating that has been shop applied. If this is damaged, please consult your U.S. Pipe Sales Representative for coating/lining repair information.
