As you peruse the 2017 Island Hospital Foundation (IHF) annual report, be prepared to be amazed by the outpouring of generosity we experienced this year. Every page highlights the accomplishments made possible by your donations. The work of our foundation is exhilaratingly pleasurable because when our community sees a need, our donors rush to meet it.
We are privileged to share in this report the impact of your donations to improve health care in our community. Whether it be programs, equipment, training or outreach, the foundation always acts with care and meticulous attention to transparency and accountability. At all times we honor the trust you place in us. As an all-volunteer board, we know that every dollar of your contributions comes to us with the expectation that patient care and community wellness will benefit.
On behalf of the board and staff at IHF, we thank each of you for being a vital member of our foundation family. We are grateful to serve as the conduits for your generosity to our patients and their families.
Thank you!

We are dedicated to providing the most advanced technology available and improving patient outcomes. In 2017, you made it possible to provide many new pieces of equipment, some of which are featured here.

Andeavor awarded a grant of $24,520 to enhance Island Hospital’s emergency preparedness with hazardous material suits and the batteries required to provide oxygen to the suit hoods. In addition they funded a carbon monoxide hemoglobin monitor to detect carbon
monoxide poisoning in the bloodstream. “This carboxyhemoglobin monitor allows us to
get an instant reading upon the patient’s arrival and
provide the most appropriate care in a much more timely manner. This is a huge service to our community as we have seen more than a 200% increase this year in the patients that have required this test.” –Kelly Pearson RN BSN, Emergency Department Director
When it comes to the patient experience, every aspect matters. These new wheel chairs are designed to create a comfortable, welcoming, and safe transport for patients and families.

Your support of the 2017 Gala of Hope made it possible for Island Hospital Foundation to upgrade Island Hospital’s surgical equipment with a new video camera featuring improved scopes, imaging capabilities and a surgical tower. This new equipment not only enhances the diagnosis and treatment of conditions but ensures that world-class surgical care is locally-accessible. The surgical tower is frequently used by General, GYN, Urology and Ortho surgeons who are providing care for
sports/work injuries, including knee/ACL repairs and shoulder/rotator cuff/labral repairs. Many surgeries, including gallbladder removal, hernia repairs, and hysterectomies, which used to require large incisions, can now be done through very small incisions, making it possible for the patient to go home the same day.

Through the support of an anonymous donor, the Foundation was able to purchase a new spine table for Island Hospital. The Allen Advance Table is a specialist table for complex surgical procedures; it rotates through 360° and is radiolucent throughout allowing X-rays to be taken without moving the patient.

Mental health is an essential part of an adolescents’ overall health and has a complex, interactive relationship with their physical health and their ability to succeed in school, at work, and in society. Your support enables direct access to effective care, including 560 counseling, therapy and social work sessions during the 2017–2018 school year alone. You create a safe and trusted environment that aids youth in dealing with a variety of mental health problems that may develop, including coping with
Today’s youth are exposed to cultural influences—both good and bad—on television, at school, in magazines, and on the internet which makes providing programs like Mental Health Intervention for youth in Anacortes schools even more important now than ever before.

“My biggest takeaway is that women take care of so many others and often forget to take care of themselves. It’s okay to say no sometimes and focus a little time on yourself and your own well-being.”
Tracy said she is so thankful for the (Foundation supported) community health screenings offered at the Health Resource Center and for having an Emergency Department so close to home that took such great care of her.
Tracy is happy to be back helping her daughters by caring for her grandchildren. “I wake up grateful to be alive and thinking it’s going to be a great day.”

Foundation Highlights
Patient Clothing KitsThe Patient Clothing Pack Program provides
clothing kits to in-patients coming through
the Emergency Room and those patients who
have nothing to wear but a hospital gown when
discharged. In 2017, 262 clothing items and shoes
were given to community members who needed
them.
Car SeatsIn 2017, low-income families accounted for 45% of
deliveries at the Thomas Brooks Birth Center. With
your help, IHF was able to provide car seats for new
mothers and families in need. By providing families
with a car seat we are not only offsetting some of
the costs for the parent(s) but most importantly it
keeps the baby safe when they leave the hospital.

Island Hospital John Carabba ScholarshipWe were proud to award the 2017 John Carabba Scholarship to
Anacortes High School Seniors Caitlin Ware and Rachael Stout. Both
outstanding young women will be pursuing a career in nursing, and we
are happy to invest in the future of these two community members!
Wound Care Fundamentals & Trauma Certification CoursesShell Puget Sound Refinery awarded a $3,500 grant for a Wound
Care Fundamentals Course and a $4,500 grant for a Trauma Certified
Registered Nurse (TCRN) Review Course to continue the education and
lifelong learning of practicing nurses and clinical staff at Island Hospital.

I have such reassurance and comfort knowing that there is a place only five minutes away where I would be cared for with the right treatment.” —J. S.
I can’t say nearly enough good things about this hospital. It truly feels like you’re cared for when you are admitted and their bedside manner is excellent.” —D. G.
My ER experience was exactly what I needed. I had careful heart monitoring and a sweet solicitude from the staff that helped me feel better. The doctor asked me all the right questions and made sure I was comfortable while giving me good advice.” —K. O.
Incredible, compassionate care! Could not have been better! Staff in all departments I encountered, from housekeeping up through the tiers of people required to make Island Hospital a great care facility, were helpful and competent. So proud of our community care center.” —R. L.
The best labor and delivery place. Amazing nurses and doctors made me feel so at home and relaxed!” —A. K.
The people there, from the receptionists to the schedulers to the doctors, nurses, and volunteers have all treated me with incredible efficiency, compassion, dignity and humor. It is very much a team effort and the home team is a real winner. If one absolutely has to have cancer, Anacortes shines brightly.” —J. N.

GALA OF HOPE The passion and romance of old-world Spain was embraced by guests during the 14th Annual Gala of Hope, Festival de Flamenco—raising more than $260,000 in net profit! With the help of a special matching gift from the Barto family, you raised nearly $170,000, during the “Heartstrings” portion of the evening to purchase new urological and surgical equipment. Thank you for ensuring exceptional care is locally accessible.
Skagit Sun BerriesDon Kruse, owner of Skagit Sun Berries, has
been kindly donating a portion of berry sales
from his stand in Anacortes to the Island
Hospital Foundation since 2011. Skagit Sun
has given more than $38,000 to help support
programs within our community.
Anacortes Cancer WalkMore than 60 community members came
together to participate in the second annual
Anacortes Cancer Walk. The walk raised more
than $16,000 with proceeds benefiting the
Cancer Care Medical Relief Fund—a $400
reimbursement grant for medical related
expenses available to all of our cancer
patients.
Island Hospital Golf ClassicOn August 7, 144 ambitious golfers competed
to raise funds for Island Hospital Foundation
and to take home the coveted Vince Oliver
Cup. Through sponsorships, on-course
competitions, a silent auction, raffle and
mulligan sales, the 16th Annual Golf Classic
raised a net profit of more than $58,000—a
new record high—that will support essential
community programs!
