IntroductionOver forty years ago, Knox Company took on the challenge of developing a complete rapid entry system specifically designed for firefighters. In 1975, the first Knox-Box® was introduced to the fire service and a unique concept in fire response was born. Knox-Box soon became the fire industry’s high security lock box of choice. In 1981, a section of the Uniform Fire Code mandating the use of rapid entry lock boxes was adopted and remains in use today.

The Knox Rapid Entry System has grown to include UL listed storage cabinets, heavy-duty padlocks and electronic override key switches. Complimentary products include KeySecure® Master Key Retention System and Knox FDC plugs and caps.

The number one high-security Knox-Box® is used for most commercial applications including businesses, schools, government and public buildings, community associations and apartment complexes. The 3200 Series Knox-Box holds keys, access cards and other small items necessary for emergency access.

We recommend the hinged-door 3200 Series Knox-Box because it allows single-handed operation. We also recommend use of the alarm tamper switch. The tamper switch allows you to connect the Knox-Box to the building’s alarm system, adding even further security.

The 4500 Series Remote Shutdown Station houses an electrical service disconnect switch that can be used by first responders during an emergency. The control switch is designed to remotely operate the building’s shunt trip switch which will disconnect all electrical power to the building. It can also be used to disconnect power to HVAC controls, industrial equipment lockout or photovoltaic/solar/wind powered systems. UL 1037 - Antitheft Alarms and DevicesSecurity has always been the top priority for the Knox® Company, and the entire Knox System is designed to maintain key and lock integrity. Once the product is shipped from our facility, maintaining the security becomes your responsibility. There are five components to maintaining the security of your Knox System.

Installation – The proper installation of the box is paramount to the security and safety of the box. Each box is shipped with installation instructions which can also be found on the Knox website. Proper installation includes both the height of the box (recommended to be 6 feet off the ground) and the correct type and number of fasteners (five 3/8” diameter Grade 5 or 8 fasteners).

Locked Box – An unlocked box leaves the keyway exposed and unprotected. We encourage you to contact your department in a timely manner to have the box locked.

Tamper Switch – Tamper switches add another layer of security to already attack resistant Knox products by having the building alarm system monitor any activity that occurs with a Knox-Box® key box. These switches help to alleviate concern about unauthorized entry and use of building keys. Tamper switches are available on all commercial Knox-Box® and Knox-Vault® key boxes.

Keyway – Knox only uses factory restricted keys and locks. At the time of your department’s registration, the keyway assigned to your department was the most secure keyway that was currently available.

KeySecure® – KeySecure® for the Knox Master Key provides a consistently high level of security for your complete, UL listed Knox System. The key for unlocking Knox-Box key boxes, vaults, cabinets, key switches and padlocks is visibly and securely held in the KeySecure unit until an authorized department member enters their assigned PIN code for key release.
