How to Prepare for Mass Casualty Events and Predictable Stages of Disruption- Michael McGonigal
TARGET AUDIENCEThis course is designated for physicians, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, military healthcare professionals, therapy disciplines, andpre-hospital care providers. We welcome healthcare residents and students to attend.
AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:• Recognize indications for amputation versus limb salvage, common
amputation types, and long term outcomes in these patients.• Discuss the importance of damage control surgery and improvements
that can be made in the management of abdominal trauma.• Review the key physiologic components in chest trauma and the
importance of damage control resuscitation.• Summarize new battlefield treatments and hemorrhage control for
traumatic injuries in a mass casualty.• Review liver and splenic embolization guidelines, procedure, and
splenic injury grading scales.• Identify types of aerodigestive system injuries and ways to manage
the airway.• Discuss roles and responsibilities of the emergency preparedness
department, and key components of the incident command system.• Recall assessment and triage in the ER the night of the Aurora
Theater Shooting and summarize the considerations in care.• Identify risk factors and the physiological responses consistent
with burnout, major depression, PTSD and suicide.• Explain the challenges faced by the OR in a mass casualty event
while ensuring optimal patient care.
