bined as a team in doubles matches. The Fighting Hawks have not won more than one match at any of the three lines in doubles, and no team has won more than one match this season either. Dustin Britton and Travis Lau have gone 1-7 together at line one, while Simon Danyluk and Ty Misialek have gone 1-5 at line two, and Matt Hokanson and Alex Mailes have gone 1-5 at line three.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS NORTH DAKOTA:The Vikings are 4-0 all-time against North Dakota, as they’ve won every match since the Fight-ing Hawks joined the Big Sky Conference ahead of the 2013 spring season. The Vikings have also twice beaten North Dakota on the road, as they won 4-2 and 5-2 in 2014 and 2015, re-spectively.

LAST TIME OUT:The Vikings got back in the win column with a 7-0 sweep of Linfield at the St. Johns Racquet Center in Portland, Ore. The Vikings won five of their six singles matches in straight sets, and won 10 of 12 sets in singles by 6-2 scores or better. Junior Nathan Boniel won both his sets at line one by 6-2 or better, as he beat Linfield’s Jose Luis Rojas, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Tommy Edwards followed with a similarly dominant win at line two, as he beat Linfield’s Trent Pruss-ing 6-2, 6-0 at line two. Senior Ethan Lopez was the one Viking to drop a set in singles in the match, but still won two sets by 6-2 or better as he beat Linfield’s Nathan Saragoza 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 at line three. Freshman Sam Larson posted the most dominant win of the day in singles, however, as he beat Linfield’s Jacob Mangan, 6-1, 6-0 at line five. The Vikings also won all three doubles matches by scores of 6-3 or better.

UPCOMING:The Vikings return home for a pair of Big Sky matches against the Montana schools next weekend. The Vikings open with a match against Montana Friday at 12 p.m, and then host Montana State Sunday at 9 a.m. Both matches will be played at Club Green Meadows in Van-couver, Wash.

TOMMY BOY WONDER:Freshmen Tommy Edwards has been a bright spot for the Vikings in his first year in the Vi-kings’ lineup. During the fall, Edwards was a finalist in the singles B flight at the Bulldog Classic, where he also won the consolation doubles title with partner Nathan Boniel. Now in the spring, Edwards ranks tied with Boniel for the team lead with six singles wins, all of which have come in straight sets. Edwards has also has gone 5-4 with Boniel at line one in doubles, and has moved up to line two in the Vikings’ singles lineup behind Boniel. Edwards has four wins at line two in singles already this season, a total that ranks him tied for ninth in single-season wins at the position. Alex VanDerschelden set the single-season record for wins at line two at nine in 2010, only five wins ahead of Edwards with nine regular-season matches on the Vikings’ schedule.

BONIEL AND LOPEZ BATTLING AT THE TOP OF THE RECORD BOOKS:A subtext to the Vikings’ 2017 season has been the battle at the top of the record book be-tween junior Nathan Boniel and senior Ethan Lopez. Both have a chance to break the career record for singles wins at Portland State, which currently stands at 28, shared between Chris Rice (2009-11) and Alex VanDerschelden (2008-11). Boniel moved ahead of Lopez earlier this season and now ranks tied for third all-time with 25 career singles wins, one ahead of Lopez, who ranks tied for sixth all-time with 24 career singles wins. The two will also battle for the career record in Big Sky singles wins that their former teammate Ian Risenhoover set at 15 last season. Lopez ranks third all-time in Big Sky singles wins with 11 – four behind Risenhoover – while Boniel ranks tied for fourth with 10 career Big Sky singles wins. Boniel and Lopez also stand first and third, respectively, in overall singles win percentage, with Boniel way out in front at .862 (25-4), while Lopez stands at .500 (24-24). Boniel is also chasing records at line one, where he currently stands second in career wins with 25 – three behind Chris Rice’s record of 28. Additionally, Boniel currently holds the record for win percentage at No. 1 singles, as his win percentage of .862 (25-4) stands way out in front of Rice’s old record of .509 (28-27).

NATHAN BONIEL, REIGNING BIG SKY MVP:Junior Nathan Boniel has a tough act to follow after he completed the best individual season in program history in 2016, which culminated in him being named the Vikings’ first Big Sky MVP in program history. Boniel broke five single-season school records while going 19-1 in

FOURTH SEASON • PORTLAND, 1990 • 26-45 OVERALL RECORD • 11-23 BIG SKY RECORD Krauel enters his fourth season at the helm of the PSU men’s tennis program during the 2016-17 academic year, after taking over as the men's tennis program's first exclusive head coach before the 2013-14 season. Krauel led the Vikings to their best sea-son in program history in 2016, as the Vi-kings set records for overall wins (12), Big Sky Conference wins (5) and overall win percentage (.571) during the season. Krauel also led Nathan Boniel to the best individual season in program history in 2016, after which Boniel became the Viking men's tennis program's first-ever Big Sky Conference MVP, as well as just the second All-Big Sky first-team selection in program history in 2016. Boniel earned the post-sea-son honors after going 19-1 overall during the 2016 spring season, including a 9-1 re-cord in Big Sky play. Boniel's 19 wins, all of which came at line one, set new program records for overall wins and wins at No. 1 singles, in both cases beating the old record of 15 that Chris Rice set in 2009. Boniel's nine Big Sky wins also broke the single-sea-son program record, while his 19-1 record also gave him the program records for over-all win percentage (.950) and win percent-age at No. 1 singles (.950). Boniel's .950 win percentage crushed the old record of .652 that Rice set with a 15-8 record in 2009. Besides Boniel, Krauel also led Ian Ris-enhoover to the all-time lead in overall doubles wins in 2016, as he finished his ca-reer with 39, one ahead of teammate Brent Wheeler at 38. Risenhoover also broke the career record for Big Sky singles wins in 2016 (15), while Wheeler joined Ethan Lo-pez in breaking the overall record for wins by a doubles team with 22 together. Krauel layed the foundation for the record-breaking 2016 season in his second year at the school, as he led the Vikings to a series of historic accomplishments in 2015. Krauel led the Vikings to four Big Sky wins during the season, tying a then-program record set in 2010. Krauel also guided the Vikings to their first-ever wins over Mon-tana and Sacramento State during the sea-son, and helped Lopez set the single-season program record for win percentage at No. 2 singles (.727), and a then-record for Big Sky singles wins with seven.

HEAD COACH TOBY KRAUELsingles in 2016, including the records for most wins in a season (19), most Big Sky wins in a season (9) and highest overall singles win percentage (.950). Boniel’s only loss during the 2016 spring season came in three sets in a match where he led in the third set. Boniel has been off to a good start so far in defense of his MVP honors, as he won the Bulldog Classic Single A title during the fall, and was a finalist in the Dar Walters Fall Classic Singles A flight. Additionally, Boniel competed at the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters, where he upset a Pac-12 mixed doubles team in Nick Crystal of USC and Denise Starr of Cal, along with Idaho’s Marianna Petrei. Both Crystal and Starr entered the match ranked in the top 10 nationally in men’s and women’s doubles, while Starr was the 2016 NCAA runner-up in women’s doubles.

NEWCOMERS:The Vikings added three true freshmen during the offseason in Tommy Edwards, Sam Larson and Majeed Bukhari, while redshirt freshman Yousef Abdo joins the fold after sitting out last season. Edwards had the best fall season of any of the four freshmen, as he made the champi-onship match of the singles B draw at the Bulldog Classic, where he also won the consolation doubles title along with teammate Nathan Boniel. Edwards also competed in the junior draw at the Oracle ITA Masters, not representing Portland State, and advanced into the second round of the prestigious tournament. Bukhari, meanwhile, made the consolation finals of the singles B draw at the Bulldog Classic, and went 5-5 overall in singles during the fall.

2016 SEASON RECAP:The Vikings completed the best season in program history last year, as the team set program records for overall wins (12), overall win percentage (.571) and Big Sky wins (5). The Vikings also challenged for a spot in the Big Sky tournament during the season, which would have been their first time ever making the Big Sky tournament. The Vikings stood 5-2 in Big Sky matches at one point, but an untimely injury to the Vikings’ No. 2 singles player, Scott Goldner, precipitated a six-match losing streak that dropped the Vikings out of tournament conten-tion. The Vikings still managed to set more individual records during the season, however, as departed senior Ian Risenhoover set the career record for career doubles wins at 39, while fellow departed senior Brent Wheeler finished second behind him with 38. Wheeler also set the record for most career wins by a doubles team with 22 with Ethan Lopez, and tied the record for most individual career wins at No. 1 doubles with 26. Risenhoover, meanwhile, left the program as the career leader in wins at No. 2 doubles, wins at No. 6 singles, Big Sky singles wins and Big Sky doubles wins. The big record-setter in 2016, however, was Nathan Boniel, who set five single-season records while becoming the program’s first-ever Big Sky MVP at the end of the season. Boniel set the records for overall singles wins (19), overall singles win percentage (.950), Big Sky singles wins (9), wins at No. 1 singles (19) and win percentage at No. 1 singles (.950).
