GOLD Journey toExcellence!
For the second year in a row,the Midnight Sun Council hasachieved the GOLD Journey toExcellence Award (JTE) for itsservice to the youth of theInterior and North Slope areas of
Alaska.
JTE is a program where goals are set for the year inareas pertaining membership growth, financial stability,and administration. Gold is the highest level a Councilcan achieve.
Similarly, Districts and Units also have goals to achieve.Both Tanana Valley and the Bush Districts achievedGOLD JTE status for 2016.
In addition we'd like to congratulate the Order of theArrow, Toontuk Lodge, for receiving the SILVER JTE fortheir accomplishments.
These are great accomplishments for our Districts andCouncil and we should all be proud of being a part in

Annual Business Meeting
The Midnight Sun Councilheld its annual meeting onFebruary 4th at Pike'sWaterfront Lodge.
We thanked our PastCouncil President RobertHull for his years of service to our Council.
Robert Hull will continue on our Board as Vice Presidentof Administration.
We elected and welcomed our new Council PresidentBob Groseclose. Bob had been serving as our HighAdventure Committee Chair for a number of years.
Returning to the Board are: Bill Beaudoin, Bill Beistline,F. Lawrence Bennett, Kal Kennedy, Steve Adamczak,Rodger Hughes, Daniel Heckman, Cynthia Erickson,Dennis (Skip) Cook, Shane Duval, Skip Payton, TravisLewis, Dana Mock, Collin Cogley, LTC Mick Braun, ErikHulbert, and Dr. Daniel Reynolds.
We also welcomed 9 new Board members: Gary Stapp,C.B. Bettisworth, Lonny Piscoya, Emily Averett, MattCooper, Michelle Pope, Doug Goering, Jon Odsather,and Cathie Harms Tordoff.
We thank all who are serving on our Board of Directors.

ANNUAL DINNER
The Midnight SunCouncil honored ourvolunteers at thispast weekend'sAnnual RecognitionDinner for the workthey do for our youth. The District Award of Merit, the highest award aDistrict can bestow on a volunteer, was awardedto two highly qualified individuals recognizing theirwork at the unit and District levels. This year'shonorees were Julie Cole and Bill Wood. The Silver Beaver is the highest award that aCouncil can present to a volunteer for theirnoteworthy service of exceptional character toyouth, their community, and to Scouting. Thisyear's honorees were Bryan Hinton and CindyMascadri.

Super Saturday Training
Our guest speaker thisyear was Larry Gumina,the first NESA Explorer tothe Ecuadorian Amazon.

The National Outstanding Eagle Scout Awardwas presented to three outstanding Eagle Scoutson for their life accomplishments. The honoreesfor this prestigious award were Larry Bennett,Skip Cook, and Sonny Lindner
Other awards for the evening included VeteransAwards, Unit Award of Merit, Council and DistrictJourney to Excellence Awards, and James E.West Awards.
The Order of the Arrow Lodge Chief, KyleWilliams installed our new Board of Directors.

Congratulations to the 2016 Eagles Classon a job well done.
The Eagle Class of 2016, recognized at the AnnualDinner, included 25 Eagles. Each member of the classreceived an Eagle Scout coin and certificate
Service projects included building a foot bridge inColdfoot, a gazebo in North Pole, and installation of a flagpole and landscaping in Fairbanks. Total service hourswere over 4500 hours.
All of the Eagle Scout projects demonstrate hours ofplanning, coordinating, fundraising, and leadership bythe Eagle Scout candidate.
The road to Eagle Scout is a long process and takes hardwork, guidance and patience to accomplish. Theseyoung gentlemen have a lot going for them and areleaders of today and tomorrow.

Friends of Scouting 2017 Family Campaign (FOS) The Friends of Scouting Familycampaign has kicked off thisyear.
The Family Campaign asksfamilies to consider acontribution to the Midnight SunCouncil BSA. A limited edition2017 Council Shoulder StripPatch will be given to those whocontribute $100.00 to thecampaign. If a unit meets its goal, the unitreceives discounts at the Midnight Sun CouncilSummer Camps. If they achieve 10% increase

IALT Bird WatchingPlatform Project
above their goal, they receive a free night at LostLake camp for the entire unit.
This year, the Family Co-Chairman for theCampaign are Bill and Cindy Wright. They aremembers of Troop 92, chartered to the KiwanisClub of Fairbanks, and in 2016 their son Kieranearned his Eagle. Toontuk Lodge updates
The Toontuk Lodge held their Winter banquet onSaturday January 28, 2016.
There were 43 in attendance.
The Arrowman of the year was awarded to JackCater, Kyle Willims and Paul Hoff. Vigil Certificates were given to Stanley Rogersand Jeff Rogers.Nick Taylor received the Founder's award.
The Lodge presented the James E. West awardto the Balko family in memory of Joseph Balko.

Spring Camporee
The Interior Alaska LandTrust is looking for a troop to
help enhance the PeatPonds by building a bird-
watching platform.
The Peat Ponds are locatedoff of Goldstream Road andserve as a beautiful home to
horned grebes, Americanwidgeons, many species of
duck, the rare Rustyblackbird, sandhill cranes,trumpeter swans, and a
variety of shorebirds, just toname a few!
The platform would benefitthe community by providinga space to view wildlife and
spot rare birds.
The Interior Alaska LandTrust will provide materials
and plans.

This is to announce the
Sons of the AmericanRevolution Eagle Scout award
program.
The program is open to Eagle
Scouts, under 19 years of age.
The award will be based on atheme essay by the scout.
The National Award is $10,000for the winner, $6,000 for the 1st
runner-up, and $4,000 for the2nd runner-up.
The state society will conduct ajudging of applications in the
spring of 2017, date to beannounced later.
The top 3 state applications areto be forwarded to National SAR
by June 1, 2017.

2017Wood Badge
Wood Badge is Scouting'spremier training course.
Baden-Powell designed itso that Scouters couldlearn, in as practical a waypossible, the skills and methods of Scouting.
It is first and foremost, learning by doing. Themembers of the course are formed into patrolsand these into a troop. The entire troop lives inthe out-of-doors for a week, camping, cookingtheir own meals, and practicing Scout skills.
For the first time in decades, the MidnightSun Council will be holding a Wood BadgeCourse, from June 11th -17th 2017 at LostLake Camp.
Schedule a part of your summer fun to beinvolved in this spectacular course.

With the retirement of Teresa Knapp, we neededto fill her shoes. Kenita Hoff has been hired to be our Registrarand will handle all membership and recharteringquestions, advancement, and training records.She has over 16 years of Scouting experienceand is very active in the Toontuk Lodge. Edith Williams will be running the Scout Shop,and is responsible for ordering, stocking, andassisting our customers. Her son had been aScouting member and she was an adult leader.
