UNFORGETTABLE EVENTS HAPPEN
HERE
QUINTESSENTIALLY SAN FRANCISCO SWEEPING VIEWS OF THE BAY PROVIDE THE STAGE FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE EVENT
Founded in 1871, San Francisco Art Institute
(SFAI) is the nation’s oldest and only school of
higher education dedicated to contemporary
art. As a focal point of the Bay Area artistic
community, SFAI is devoted to supporting the
next generation of artists by fostering diversity
and community engagement, creating new
forms of creative expression, and cultivating
critical discourse in the arts.
The 800 Chestnut Street campus—nestled
atop the city’s historic Russian Hill—is just a few
blocks from North Beach, Pier 39, numerous
hotels, parking, and entertainment venues.
The building features a unique fusion
between traditional and contemporary
architectural styles. Intricate brickwork, stately
archways, and rustic terracotta tiles juxtaposed
with angular shapes and huge expanses of
board formed concrete, bringing together old
and new. There are five main rental areas to
choose from as well as several classrooms. It is
also home to one of only three murals in the city
of San Francisco executed by the prolific artist,
Diego Rivera.
SFAI is committed to making designated
areas of the campus available for events on
weekends and during winter, spring, and
summer break periods when students are
not on campus. The income generated by
venue rentals plays a vital role in supporting
SFAI’s academic and public programming by
supplementing operational costs.

CAMPUS HISTORY• 1926: Architects James Bakewell and
Arthur Brown of the eponymous Bakewell
and Brown Architecture firm finish SFAI’s
original building. The firm also designs a
number of notable San Francisco buildings,
including City Hall (1915) and Coit Tower
(1933).
• 1931: Mexican muralist Diego Rivera
completes The Making of a Fresco
Showing the Building of a City in the
school’s gallery.
• 1969: SFAI expands by adding giant
150-foot long studio bays, a colossal
rooftop amphitheater, and outdoor quad
area. Half of the building, designed by
Paffard Keatinge-Clay, is modeled after Le
Corbusier’s Carpenter Center for the Visual
Arts in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
• 1976: SFAI is listed as San Francisco
Landmark #85.
• 2007: SFAI is given the prestigious
American Institute of Architects’ 25-year
Award recognizing distinguished California
Architecture of enduring significance.
• 2015: SFAI is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.

Filmed on SFAI’s campus, Arnold Schwarzenegger played the role of Josef Schmidt, a hypersensitive bodybuilder on steroids in the show The Streets of San Francisco which aired in 1977. The episode is called “Dead Lift.”
SFAI CAFÉThe café is ideal for intimate gatherings,
private meetings, catered events, and
receptions. It features wall-to-wall
windows with great light and a stellar
view of the Bay Bridge, Angel Island, and
Alcatraz. Tables and chairs are included
with the rental and can be arranged to
your liking. The kitchen is available at an
additional cost.

Student Art WorkSFAI students are encouraged to create
public artwork throughout the year in

work in any way, including by relocating
work to another area.
