From Marion - DT February! Now let me see, “What did we get up to in February?” We attended our
first Golden Years on Wednesday the 8th and as always, the members came out to as-
sist us. Inside, an inviting morning tea was waiting. Peter T entertained, the lucky
door prize was drawn and then we played Bingo. For all of this, the Golden Years group
only charge $3. Where else would you get all you can eat and drink plus entertainment
for that amount? Our thanks must go to the Golden Years group.
Here at Nanyima we do not need any excuse to get dressed up and Valentines Day was
no different. It was our beauty morning and red was the colour of the day. All the
volunteers and staff wore some item of red on them. Of course it would not be Valen-
tines Day without some treats. A scary fairy was going around handing out lollies to
everyone. At the Beauty Boutique clients were offered hand and foot massages and
nails were cut, cleaned, filed and painted if requested. It was a very social morning
with plenty of chatter and laughter.
On Wednesday the 15th we headed up to the Gargett Hotel for lunch. On the menu
was crumbed fish or steak served with chips and salad. Showers were coming across
but we got there and back without getting wet.
The first Morning Melodies for the year was held on Friday the 17th and it was a trib-
ute to Peter Allen by Simon Gillespie. Peter Allen’s songs are his legacy and with Si-
mon’s skilfully sensitive interpretations they serve to tell the story of his life and his
loves in a very personal and intimate cabaret. Simon was very entertaining; he had
everyone laughing and clapping along. It was great seeing the reactions from our resi-
dents who attended. We always stay and have lunch in the foyer before heading back
home.
On Tuesday the 21st we had indoor bowls; the morning started with mixed teams. Then
it was ladies v gentlemen. BOY! Did the games become competitive. There was some
good hearted banter thrown backward and forward between teams; the cheering got
louder as each side made a good shot. I’m happy to say that the girls came out the
winners. Sorry boys.
On Friday the 24th it was our pleasure to invite a group of community gentlemen to join
our male residents for a social morning tea. The group consisted of some of our great
entertainers, volunteers, husbands and friends. It didn’t take long before everyone was
mingling. By the end of the morning there were some tall tales from
the past. Grandad Pumpkin had everyone in laughter with some hilar-
ious jokes and stories. We hope to do this again in the near future
with maybe a BBQ next time.

Bye for now

crisp, tip into the slow-cooker pot, then brown the chunks of lamb in the pan. Transfer

and enough water to cover the lamb. Cover and cook on Low for 7 hours.
2. Stir in the pearl barley and leek, and cook on High for 1 hour until pearl barley is tender..
3. Stir in the butter, season and serve scooped straight from the dish. (Serves 6)
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon sunflower oil
200g smoked bacon, skinned and cut into chunks
900g stewing lamb cut into large chunks
Small bunch thyme
3 onions, thickly sliced
5 carrots, cut into big chunks

700mL lamb stock
3 bay leaves

CLINICAL CORNERCLINICAL CORNERCLINICAL CORNER Pollen Allergy causes Allergic Rhinitis.
Pollen from grasses, weeds or trees can trigger symptoms of allergic rhinitis
(hay fever) and asthma. Allergic Rhinitis is a common and debilitating disease
affecting around 1 in 5 people in Australia and New Zealand.
Allergic rhinitis symptoms are caused by the body's immune response to in-
haled pollen, resulting in chronic inflammation of the eyes and nasal passages.
Allergic rhinitis symptoms include:
runny, itchy, congested nose
irritable, itchy, watery and red eyes
itchy ears, throat and palate
People with allergic rhinitis often suffer from fatigue due to poor quality
sleep. Moderate or severe allergic rhinitis impairs learning and performance
in children, results in more frequent absenteeism in adults and reduced
productivity and can cause considerable impairment in quality of life.
To reduce your exposure to pollen:-
Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes
Avoid going outside on windy days
Do not mow the grass - if mowing is unavoidable, wear a mask
Rinse your eyes frequently with water
Keep windows closed
Effective treatments are available therefore it is important to seek advice
from your pharmacist or doctor about medications or treatments that will
relieve your symptoms.

New Menu
Our new dietician approved, five week
rotating menu commenced on Monday.
A lot of planning goes into preparing a
new menu and we’d like to commend our
Head Cook Tanya on her efforts in
getting the new menu organised.
Incoming Food Items
All food brought into the facility by
residents and family members needs to
be taken to the kitchen for testing to
ensure its temperature meets food
safety standards.
Resident Meetings
These are held every three months in
the Multi-Purpose Room. They provide
an opportunity for Marion and Jenni to
discuss activities the residents have
participated in, to talk about upcoming
activities and to invite residents to put
forth ideas for future activities and
outings. Family members are welcome
to attend. The Minutes from these
meetings are uploaded on Nanyima’s
webpage at www.nanyimacare.com.au.
They are also on display on the notice-
board in the main corridor near the
Nurses’ Station. Please feel free to
read at your leisure.
Talking Watches
Talking wrist watches for the visu-
ally impaired are available from the
Blind Association. With the press
of a single button, the watch will
talk and tell the user what the time
is. These watches are also useful
for those residents wanting to know
the time during the night. Rather
than finding a torch or turning a bed
side light on, residents can press
the watch and it will tell the time.
