May 2, 2017Zurich

THE ISSUES

Developments that build capabilities – new technology platforms, new technologies, and fundamental research – lay the seeds for a family of winning new products, or a much improved manufacturing process. These are your "tomorrow pro-jects" and potential game-changers that give your business sustainable competitive advantage. The projects are uncer-tain and high risk, but the pay-offs can be enormous.

Too often, the results are disappointing: Projects take too long, cost too much, and fail to deliver much of value. These projects must be managed, but not in the usual way: Much damage is done by applying traditional management tech-niques to these non-traditional, less defined an higher risk projects! Top performing businesses in innovation recognize that technology development, science projects, and technology platforms must be selected and managed differently - see how.

This seminar shows you how to ...

- Define, screen and select technology development, science and platform projects

- Determine the value of these projects, in spite of their ambiguity, uncertainties and risks

- Manage these projects professionally with a special stage-and-gate system - one that balances discipline with creativity, experimentation and flexibility: Stage-Gate TD

- Build in some of the newer Agile methods from the software world to get better results - faster results, confirmed results, and even higher morale of team members

- Achieve earlier validation of the value of these technology development projects through iterative or spiral development methods

- Develop technology roadmaps to help map out your technology strategy and define the right technology projects to do

MANAGING TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENTSTuesday, May 2, 2017

10:00 Registration and Coffee

10:15 Introductions and Getting on the Same Page: Key Definitions Technology and platform development projects are the foundation for new products and thus are vital to the prosperity of the modern corporation. But these capability- and knowledge-build projects are often mismana-ged – companies employ the wrong process, and apply inappropriate financial criteria for project selection. This introductory session shows why traditional development models, processes and methods simply don’t work for these high risk and bolder platform and technology development projects and identifies the challen-ges faced in technology and platform developments.

11:15 Networking Break

11:30 The TD-Process Stage-Gate® System – Idea to Implementation in the Business How do you manage, run and execute your technology and platform development projects in your company? Just because they are different from traditional new product or process improvement projects does not mean that there is no appropriate system for managing them. Quite the opposite! Leading companies, with a long history of successful platform and technology development, have implemented Cooper’s Stage-Gate process – but it’s a new and different system: “Stage-Gate-TD”. But get the details of this unique process designed to drive these high risk and often ill-defined projects from idea through to commercial reality.

12:45 Networking Lunch

13:45 Building Agile-Methods into Stage-Gate-TDConcepts and methods of Agile development, widely used in the software world, are now applied to technology development projects. Agile is in theory ideal for technology developments: Agile promotes experimentation, iterations, and continuous validations of results and project value; it is also valuable for highly ambiguous and uncertain projects, where planning is difficult. A technology development project is very different than IT developments, however. How Agile can be successfully integrated into Stage-Gate-TD is explored – using Agile tools such as time-boxed sprints, daily scrums, backlogs, burndown charts, and dedicated development teams. The important adjustments and modifications that must be made to integrate Agile with Style-Gate-TD to get best results are also outlined.

15:30 Networking Break

15:45 Picking the Winners: Effective Technology Development Project Selection Making the resource commitment decisions for technology and platform developments, especially in the early stages, is problematic for many companies. Clearly, traditional tools, such as financial analysis, NPV and profit criteria, are not too useful here. In these projects with much undefined, the level of uncertainty is so great that numerical estimates of expected sales, costs, investment and profits are likely to be grossly in error. Indeed there is evidence that businesses that rely strictly on financial tools and criteria to select these projects end up with the lowest value development portfolios. Cooper identifies the best evaluation techniques and methods that yield the most robust development portfolios. These include scorecard methods, real options and the productivity index tools.

17:30 Networking Break

17:45 Strategic Technology RoadmappingA roadmap is management’s view of how it gets to where it wants to be. Product roadmaps are common in industry, but not so for technology roadmaps. They involve mapping out what technology developments the business plans to undertake over the next 4-7 years, and are strongly dependent on the product roadmap. But other factors must be considered as well. Cooper outlines a proven approach to technology roadmapping in this section, beginning with the identification of roadmap candidates through to selecting and prioritizing these probable projects years into the future.
