Chennai Silks showroom destroyed in fire

By Our Staff ReporterChennai Silks, a leading textile showroom

with seven floors and a basement in UsmanRoad, T. Nagar, was destroyed in a majorfire that started at around 4 a.m on May 31and continued for another 24 hours before itwas brought under control.

The building also houses Sree KumaranThangamaligai (a gold jewellery showroom)in the ground floor.

Incidentally, the building was facingdemolition for plan violation in 2006, butmanaged to stave it off, only to be gutted byfire now. Stocks worth crores of rupees weredestroyed in the fire. 14 persons trapped inthe building were rescued unhurt. Passersbynoticed thick smoke emanating from thebuilding at around 4.30 a.m and immediatelyalerted the Fire and Rescue Departmentwhich rushed personnel to the spot.

6 fire tenders, 25 watertenders and over 150 personnelwere pressed into servicebesides 65 tanker lorries ofMetrowater to douse the fire.

A skylift was used to rescue14 staff members trapped inthe top floor of the building.

The cause of the fire wassaid to be an electric shortcircuit. Narrow roads and theabsence of easy approachhindered the fire servicepersonnel’s efforts to put outthe flames early. According toS. George (Director General ofPolice and Director, Fire andRescue Services), the fire couldnot be controlled as the buildingwas completely sealed eitherwith concrete or glass. He saidthat the thick smoke alsoprevented the personnel frommoving forward.

Due to lack of ventilation, the fire quickly spreadupwards and to all the otherparts of the building. The largequantity of diesel for thegenerator stored in thebasement and the inflamm-able clothing material added

fuel to the blazing fire.By around 11 a.m, the ground

floor caved in, making itimpossible for the fire person-nel to enter the building.

After fighting for over 10hours, the fire in the rear sectionof the building was broughtunder control, but the fire inthe front side continued to ragesince it was covered with glass, wood and a concrete wall.

George said that with noother option left, they decidedto break open the windows, glass façade and concrete wallsto spray water into the building.

Finally, after fighting the firefor over 15 hours, it wasbrought under control by 7 p.mwith thick smoke stillemanating from the 7th floor.

It was only by the nextmorning that the fire in all partsof the building including the 7th

floor was completely doused. He added that had the fire

spread to nearby buildings, itcould have led to a majordisaster. Later, based on aninspection by the dept.concerned, the State Govt. took

the decision to completelydemolish the building. Anofficial said that the moneyspent on the rescue operationwill be recovered from theowners of Chennai Silks.

Police personnel cordoned offUsman Road at both its endsand all shops on both sides ofthe road were kept closed.

A FIR has been registered inthe case which terms it anaccident. The FIR was filed byChennai Silks managerRavindran.

Speaking to reporters, stateFinance Minister D Jaya-kumar said that necessaryaction would be taken if therewere any violation of buildingnorms. The smoke spread to awide area in the vicinitycausing severe pollution. Manycomplained of eye irritation andbreathing problems.

R. Chandrasekaran (aresident of Lake View Road)told Mambalam Times that hewas on his regular morningwalk with his daughter whenhe saw a small crowd gatheredoutside Chennai Silks and

smoke emanating from thebuilding.

Within the next five minutes,I could hear fire tenders comingin. I was there for another hourand the intensity of the firestarted to rise alarmingly.

A battalion of police perso-nnel kept the onlookers awayand also cleared the area andblocked off Usman Road at bothits ends.

According to V.S. Jayara-man (a resident of MotilalStreet and a senior member ofT. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation), the locals hadbeen wary of such an accidentfor a long time due to violationin construction norms by thesecommercial establishmentsand have also filed a case in theHigh Court in 2014 on the multi-ple violations in the buildings inthe T. Nagar shopping district.

Chennai Silks is expected torecoup a significant portion ofthe losses as it is reported tohave taken insurance cover tothe tune of Rs. 40 crore for theproperty with a leadinginsurance company.

Fire deprives neighbourhoodresidents of waterBy Our Staff Reporter

Metrowater supplied around 7 lakh liters of water throughtankers to douse the major fire in the Chennai Silks showroomin Usman Road, T. Nagar which started in the wee hours of May31 and continued the next day.

According to a Metrowater official, 54 tankers were put intooperation to supply the water.

It affected the daily supply of around 6 lakh liters of waterthrough tankers to around 700 households in and around T.Nagar. The residents had to make alternative arrangementsby buying water from private suppliers at higher prices to meettheir needs. Many complained that the private tankers exploitedthe situation by increasing the rate.

The crisis continued the next day and the regular supply tothe residents was delayed by more than 72 hours.

Water through tankers is supplied to the residents fromfilling points in Valluvar Kottam and K. K. Nagar.

With piped water supply drying up, the demand for supply ofwater through tanker has increased.

A Metrowater official said that the normal waiting period isthree days from the date of booking

“We have been buying water through tankers for the pastone month from Metrowater. They usually supply within 48hours of placing the order. On May 31, the supply was due andby noon the sump had gone dry. When I went to the fillingstation, I was told the supply will be delayed by another coupleof days due to the fire”, said S. Anand (a resident of VeerasamyStreet, West Mambalam).

“We went without water for the next 24 hours before aprivate tanker supplied us a load of water at Rs. 3,200 for14000 liters when the normal rate is Rs. 2,100”, he added.

Decision on building violationsdelayedBy Our Staff Reporter

A day before the Chennai Silks fire, the High Court appointedMonitoring Committee had met for the 61st time.

As always, it discussed at length the T. Nagar buildingviolations and the impediments to enforcement.

The 62 “unauthorised buildings” so far identified in T. Nagarhad flouted development regulations, particularly withreference to Floor Space Index, and therefore action had to betaken, especially since the Smart City project is to be takenup soon in T. Nagar. Government officials, who are part of themonitoring committee, were absent, except for the CMDA ViceChairman and Housing and Urban Development secretary D.P. Yadav. The committee comprises six government officialsand six non-officials.

FSI was only one aspect of the violations. “In RanganathanStreet, if the CMDA goes by rules then no multi-storey buildingshould exist,” said a former member of the committee.

CMDA officials said that any decision to demolish theunauthorised buildings has to be taken by the government, atthe Chief Minister’s level.

“CMDA officials at the committee meetings did accept thatthere were violations but said they were helpless as thegovernment has to take the decision,” said M.G. Devasahayam,a former IAS officer and a committee member.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 55When Ambikapathi was remade years later with Sivaji

Ganesan and P.Bhanumathi repeating the roles of MKTBhagavathar and Santhanalakshmi, strangely, TA Mathuramwas to repeat her same role in the later version too, but the filmdid not do well at the box office. The MKT version was still toogreen in the memory banks of Tamil moviegoers.

Interestingly, though T. A. Mathuram and N. S. Krishnan, the greatest comedy pair of Indian Cinema as well as husbandand wife in real life, were cast in the original ‘Ambikapathi’, theywere not paired together as they were in other films. Indeed, they never meet on screen in ‘Ambikapathi’. Krishnan playeda wanderer falling in love with the buxom wife of a friend, playedby P. R. Mangalam. The friend was played by P. G. Venkatesan,a fine singer, known as ‘the Saigal of South India’. Krishnan’sinterest in the woman and the progress of their love affair wereconveyed in detail to the man by Krishnan himself, blissfullyunaware that his friend was the woman’s husband! A nice bitof comedy superbly done by Krishnan.

When screened at the International Film Festival 1991 inMadras, the packed South Indian Film Chamber Auditoriumrocked with laughter watching NSK’s comedy. His comedyremained as fresh as ever and the reception accorded to itduring the Festival clearly showed that Krishnan was still adraw. When he came on screen, even the below-30s in theaudience clapped, showing that he was still a cult figure fortyand more years after his death.

One of the major features of ‘Ambikapathi’ was its poeticand sweetly fascinating dialogues,. Dialogues in Tamil in ear-lier years had been stilted or too colloquial, relying much onBrahmin slang. Elangovan changed all that. His Tamil addedlustre to the film and, for the first time in Tamil Cinema, thedialogues were specially noticed by the common person and thecritic. The dialogue-writer assumed importance and Elangovancreated waves in Tamil Cinema.

Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, by now a living legend, began toinsist that producers approaching him for a movie should cometo him only after engaging Papanasam Sivan and Elangovanand paying their customary advances. During that period, theBhagavathar - Papanasam Sivan - Elangovan trio was con-sidered just what was needed for box-office success. It all beganwith ‘Ambikapathi’.

With the stunning success of ‘Chintamani’ and ‘Ambikapathi’in a single year, movie enthusiasts started regardingThyagaraja Bhagavathar as a demigod. His subsequent filmstoo began enjoying yearlong runs. ‘Thiruneelakantar’ (1939),directed by Raja Sandow, was another musical hit ofBhagavathar’s. One of its songs ‘Dheena KarunaakaraneNataraajaa...’ joined the list of great melodies of Tamil Cinema.

A tale of a potter-turned-saint, ‘Thiruneelakantar’ enjoysgreat popularity to this day.

As his films normally enjoyed long runs, Bhagavathar did notbelieve in doing films in quick succession. He engaged himselfin other activities like performing in music concerts, for whichthere was a great demand. That was why during the decade1934-44; Bhagavathar appeared in only nine films, all of themclassics.

‘Ashok Kumar’ (1941), directed by Raja Chandrasekhar, was based on a so-called historical story built around Ashokathe Great, his son Gunalan, and the young queenTrishyarakshitai. A tale of a lustful stepmother trying toentice her stepson, it was indeed a rehash of the popular folkmyth tale ‘Sarangadhara’, which has been filmed in more thanone language. A version with Bhagavathar and S.D.Subbulakshmi came out a ‘Naveena Sarangadhara’ (1936).Why Naveena (means ‘new’)? There had been a film called‘Sarangadhara’ (1935) in the earlier year and so this was called‘Naveena’! Simple, is it not?

In ‘Ashok Kumar’, Bhagavathar played Gunalan. A singingactress, T. V. Kumudhini, a newcomer who had made a markin 1939 with H.M.Reddi’s ‘Mathrubhoomi’, portrayed his wife.A leading Telugu star and fine actress, Pasupuleti Kannamba, who played the lecherous stepmother also came in for noticefor her graceful beauty. ‘Ashok Kumar’ too was a majorsuccess, all its songs becoming hits .... ( To be continued)

NO HOLDS BARRED

The Road to HellThings, good and bad, are sent by the forces of nature to

have an innings which, when the time comes, plays itselfout. This eternal truth was discovered by some of us whotravelled from Kochi to Bengaluru after attending mygrandson’s grand wedding that afternoon.

En route to the Kochi airport, with an hour of daylight togo, we decided to foray into my wife’s ancestral home, theroad to which looked like it had been hit by Hitler’s bombsduring the closing years of the despot.

While India became politically free soon thereafter, theruts, for want of newly discovered words in the goldentongues of officialese, continued to stand on what was oncecalled ‘roads’. No local body elected in these 70 yearsthought of planting a single light on that long and narrowstreet!

The flight from Kochi took off an hour late and we reachedBengaluru airport in the wee hours of the next morning. Mygranddaughter Nitya swung into action and booked anUber cab with the practised ease of a smart phone special-ist. The cab zoomed off as if on an urgent mission… a missionto hit every single hump and rut on the 50 km stretch of roadto home. Despite our cautioning the cabbie to be careful asI had a delicate back, we seemed to be entrapped in a pre-dated roadless path of boneshakerdom.

When nearing home with the glimmer of hope that thishell would soon pan off, we hit a sneaky mother-of-all roadhumps at 120 kmph! The four-wheeler did a double-thudand my poor 83-year-old pate hit the ceiling and nearlymade me an invertebrate.

We all screamed at the cabbie in one voice as the vehiclecame to screeching halt. We began to wonder whether theUber cabbie had visited one of those arrack shops that linedthe highways before climbing behind the wheel.

Then, out of the gloom, appeared an unusual apparitionwaving a torch and barring our way. It was a hefty cop whoinsisted on a breath test on the driver. Surprisingly, findingnothing incriminating in the cabbie’s breath, which wasprobably innocent like mother’s milk, he growled, “there afew drunks on the road, sorry for stopping you”. He wavedus on.

The rest of the journey was mercifully short and spent intotal silence while each of us carefully took inventory of thestate of our recently rearranged skeletal structure. Thesight of home had never looked so beautiful and comforting!

They say that the road to hell is paved with good inten-tions. I disagree. In Bengaluru, it is paved with unmarkedroad humps, deep ruts and rotten cabbies!
