2017 18Showcasing StamfordWelcome to our jam packed 2017/18 programme showcasing the many talents of our students. Music events range from lunchtime concerts through to a celebration of Sir Malcolm Sargent with the Band of Irish Guards.

The Sixth Form production takes us to the colourful but divided world of 1960’s Baltimore in Hairspray. The Middle School also explores equality in their production of Blue Stockings set in 1896 Girton College, Cambridge and the lower school perform a modern adaptation of Treasure Island.

We see the return of the ever successful Dance Showcases and, keeping things contemporary, drama students present works inspired by the physical theatre giants Frantic Assembly.

This year’s Foundation Lectures draw on the expertise of a number of fields including 18th Century domestic architecture, and anthropology that changed the way we live.

Dan CruickshankGeorgian Towns and Cities:Works of Urban Art by Accident

Britain’s urban domestic architecture of the 18th and early 19th century is the admiration of the world. In design erudite and harmonious, in plan sensible, adaptable and ingenious with individual houses often balanced in design, size and use to create exemplary urban quarters.

Yet almost invariably these remarkable creations – in Bath; London; Stamford, Lincolnshire; Blandford Forum, Dorset, or Ashbourne, Derbyshire were realised in the most ruthless of circumstances, as speculations built quickly and cheaply by often humble

artisans in search of profits. These creations are urban works of art by accident. How did they come about? What lessons can we learn?

The talk will focus on a number of case studies – including Spitalfields in East London – the subject of Dan Cruickshank’s current book.

Dan is an art historian and TV presenter with a special interest in the history of architecture. He holds a BA in Art, Design and Architecture and is a widely published author.

Copies of Dan’s books will be on sale after the lecture and Dan will be available to sign them.

This year we celebrate the life of Sir Malcolm Sargent with a number of events through the year. This first concert will be a collaboration between the Band of the Irish Guards and our senior wind, brass and percussion students. Expect a lively and varied programme of military standards and explosive film music.

Andy McNab CBE DCM MMLine of Fire

Andy McNab was brought up on the gritty housing estates of Peckham, South East London and, as a teenage delinquent, he kicked against society. As a young soldier he waged war against the IRA in the streets and fields of South Armagh. As a member of 22 SAS he was at the centre of covert operations for nine years – on five continents.

During the first Gulf War he commanded Bravo Two Zero, a patrol that, in the words of his commanding officer, ‘will remain in regimental history for ever’. McNab was the British Army’s most highly decorated serving soldier when he finally left the SAS in February 1993.

Andy McNab has written about his experiences in the SAS in three bestselling books: Bravo Two Zero, Immediate Action and Seven Troop.

His many other works of fiction include several series of novels for young adults including the Dropzone series and the Boy Soldier series. His non-fiction titles include four ‘Quick Read’ titles for emerging adult readers. Andy’s latest novel, Line of Fire, features ex Special Forces soldier, Nick Stone.

In this Foundation Lecture, Andy will discuss his life story along with the creative process for his books. Copies of Andy’s books will be on sale after the lecture and Andy will be available to sign them.

The Wind Band present a jazzy lunchtime concert with performances on trumpet, trombone, tuba and small ensembles.

This concert is a cornucopia of ensembles and soloists. Performances by Sinfonietta, VOX, Cantarini, Brass Faculty amongst others will have plenty for everyone.

Brass Lunchtime Concert

Students work in groups to devise a piece from scratch. Their stimulus is either a novel or short story and they work to creatively adapt the material into a non-naturalistic piece in the style of notable theatre company Frantic Assembly. In the past, students have explored works by Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle and Ian Fleming. This year’s pieces focus on G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown stories. Please note that this is a formal examination and is for an invited audience only.

The String Faculty provide entertainment on this Friday lunchtime with quartets, quintets and soloists on violin, viola, cello and bass. This very impressive programme from the serious to the light will be a very rewarding way to spend half an hour.

It is 1896 at Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women. When the men graduate, the women are denied degrees, leaving them with nothing but the stigma of being a ‘blue stocking’ – an unmarriageable, educated woman. Join students from Years 10-11 as they fight for equality and to change the future of education.

A forum for students in Years 7-13, who have an interest in dance, to exhibit their work to a public audience. This year’s theme is ‘literature’, and the choreography will comprise of an eclectic mix of dance styles ranging from contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre and ballet. The pieces will be derived from the House Dance Competition, an event held at Stamford High School during the Autumn Term, together with dances choreographed by pupils during lunchtimes and after school clubs.

For hundreds of thousands of years, our ancestors depended on wild plants and animals for survival. They were hunter-gatherers, consummate survival experts, but taking the world as they found it. Then a revolution happened: our ancestors started to domesticate wild species. The human population boomed - civilization began.

In this lecture, Alice Roberts uncovers the amazing deep history of ten familiar species with incredible wild pasts: dogs, apples and wheat; cattle; potatoes and chickens; rice, maize, horses, and finally, humans. Alice Roberts not only reveals how becoming part of our world changed these animals and plants, but shows how they became our allies, essential to the survival and success of our species – and to our future.

Enlightening, wide-ranging and endlessly fascinating, Tamed is an epic story, encompassing hundreds of thousands of years of history and archaeology alongside cutting-edge genetics and anthropology. Yet it is also a deeply personal journey that will change how we see ourselves and the species on which we have left our mark.

Alice Roberts is an anthropologist and Professor of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Birmingham. She is an academic, writer and broadcaster with a special interest in the structure of humans, how we function and our place in the wider environment. Copies of Alice’s books will be on sale after the lecture and Alice will be available to sign them.

Singing is a big part of daily life at Stamford Endowed Schools. Here we celebrate all things vocal with a mixed programme from all the schools choirs. Expect a programme of sacred and secular, pop, jazz and musical theatre. Last year ended with 270 singers on stage in a rendition of ‘You’ll never walk alone’. Will this year top that?

The SES Bands return with their usual eclectic mix of music performed by the Concert Band, Big Band and Wind Band. Expect traditional band music, film scores, jazz standards and lots more besides.

Witness the SES Senior Percussion Ensemble and soloists in this fascinating concert. No other concert gives you a bigger array of instruments to hear and see.

Come and hear our Junior School students sing and play. The concert will include performances by Camerata, Fiddle Band, Voce and a number of other ensembles and solos.

The ever popular summer concert will be a broad range of music from our students generally in Years 7-9. Bands, choirs, orchestras, chamber ensembles including the Year 7 Recorder Army (seeing is believing) and soloists will be on hand to delight.

This concert sees the singers get their turn. Come and enjoy a concert full of a variety of songs from leider and art song in English, French, Italian and German through to songs from the shows. Surely something for everyone.

The strings make up a significant proportion of the music making at Stamford Endowed Schools. The many chamber groups will be ready to entertain you with works by Mozart, Handel and Beethoven as well as lighter music and some solo performances.

The final scholars’ concert gives an opportunity for our youngest scholars to entertain. Last year the standard of this concert was exceptional and promises to be equally good this year with a great variety of music.

One of the many highlights of the year. A chance to hear our fabulously talented composers discuss and play their works. The range of music will take us from popular music singer songwriters to the chromatic even atonal sounds of modern Art music. As ever, this promises to be a fascinating evening.

Our Year 12 students and others explore with us the creation of music through technology with performances and compositions composed using and for digital media.

Last year’s Saxophone concert was exceptional with students from all years playing on all kinds of saxophone including soprano and baritone. The Saxophone Ensemble goes from strength to strength and will be performing works from their repertoire of pop music arrangements to jazz and more traditional music.
