Swiss Armed Forces chief’s praise for IDEXLt Gen Andre Blattmann, Chief of Swiss Armed Forces, has expressed his satisfaction on the defence relations with UAE, praising the UAE Armed Forces for contributing to the stability of the region.

“I am very satisfied with the relationship between our countries and armed forces. The UAE Armed Forces are contributing to stability in a vitally important region,” he said.

“Thus, it is a particular honour for Switzerland that the UAE Air Force has chosen the Pilatus PC-21 training system; it is the same that we are using in Switzerland.” Furthermore, there are frequent visits at the level of Defence Minister, Chief of the Armed Forces or Commander of the Air Force. “We appreciate these contacts and are looking forward to a long and mutually beneficial cooperation.”

He said Swiss participation in IDEX has increased from 18 exhibitors in 2012 to around 30 this year.

The Swiss defence market is very

limited. Therefore, access to European and worldwide defence business is crucial for Swiss Industry. “The involvement of our industry in a global competitive environment is essential to maintain a high-level technological base in Switzerland. International exhibitions like IDEX provide a suitable platform to position our national industry.”

Speaking on the potential of defence co-operation between Switzerland and the GCC states, Lt Gen Andre Blattmann said, “I have to stress that Switzerland is a small country, particularly when it comes to defence cooperation. However, considering these circumstances, I see the present situation as quite satisfactory and hope that the current level can be maintained.” He said the Swiss defence industry essentially consists of a few large companies. Due to the limited domestic defence market they are internationally positioned, mostly with high quality products and specialties.

In addition, Switzerland has got a broad base of SME’s supplying smaller systems, components or services. Most of them are Swiss owned and are operating in the civil or dual use sector as well. The defence sector in Switzerland is dominated by traditionally strong industrial branches, such as machine industry, electronic and electro technical industry as well as metal industry, he added.

Italian Defense Minister Giampaolo Di Paolo has hailed relations with the UAE and says Italy is ready to support the country’s drive to acquire technology in industry and other sectors.

“We are very satisfied with the cooperation with the UAE in the defense sector. There is definitely room for improvement in the industrial, as well as in the technical/operational, and technical/capability sectors,” he told daily Nation Shield.

“We are ready to work in this direction, as we understand the UAE’s desire to develop their own industry. We are therefore available to transfer technology and our know-how, also through the participation to common program. Some good examples are already in place, which represent excellent benchmarks.

Di Paolo also said Italy maintains strong ties with other Gulf countries and

that the Italian government supports all initiatives by local companies to expand cooperation with the UAE and the other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

“There is a potential based on government-sponsored initiatives, and

we are ready to show the greatest availability and openness to meet all the requirements - be they of industrial, operational, or technical nature - GCC countries may have. We strongly believe long term partnerships may give the best results,” he said.

“I think everybody can see the magnitude of Italian presence at IDEX. The displays offer the Italian technology offered to the EAU. Just as the Fincantieri Ships, notably an Abu Dhabi class Corvette and a patrol ship offered to the Emirates Navy. Moreover, one Italian Navy Corvette lies at anchor.” He said Italy’s participation in IDEX involves the main stakeholders from both the institutional and industrial sectors, adding that all major Italian defence industries have a stand here, including a joint one between the Ministry of Defence and the Federation of Italian Industries for Aerospace, Defence and Security (AIAD).

The US Government approval of Northrop Grumman’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye has the company positively glowing with delight.

Rigorous testing is carried out by the US Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron One to determine if the product is operationally suitable and effective – the E-2D passed with flying colours-plus.

“You have to pass this test or you can’t go into production, says Northrop Grumman director, UAE AEW&C programmes, Jerry Spruill. “The grade achieved by the E2D is the highest you can get. This is virtually unprecedented. You look at other programmes of that complexity and you won’t find such a result. “To pass with such solid grades is thrilling news. What’s particularly special is that this is new and cutting edge, but it has matured quickly.”

Nine have been delivered – that will be ramped up shortly as 75 will be built.

The product has also received a vote of confidence from the US Government.

The US Department of Defence budget is allotted annually. However, if the government likes what it sees it can make provision for a ‘multi-year’ allocation. This reduces parts costs for example, and makes the project more

cost-effective. Northrop Grumman and the US Navy are currently working together to secure a multi-year arrangement. Meantime, Spruill has heaped praise on this year’s IDEX. “It’s more dynamic and the scale is much bigger. There are decision makers from all over the world. “And we are set to establish a more corporate footprint in Dhabi. We’re here to stay.”

Lockheed Martin-developed missile defense systems achieved numerous noteworthy milestones throughout 2012. The following highlights from the highly impressive year reaffirm Lockheed Martin’s position as a leader in integrated air and missile defense.

In October, the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile and Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System successfully engaged in the first-ever test of all three systems demonstrating the integrated capabilities of today’s U.S. regional missile defense systems.

These systems worked together to detect, track, engage and negate two ballistic missile targets and two cruise missile-like targets during a complex, live-fire flight test, known as Flight Test Integrated-01, conducted by the MDA at the Reagan Test Site on the Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific.

As part of the test, different sensors, interceptors and weapons systems

were integrated through the Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) system, also developed by a national team led by Lockheed Martin. PAC-3 MissileLast December, Lockheed Martin received a contract totalling $775 million from the US Army Aviation and Missile Command for hardware and services associated with the combat-proven Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment program. In partnership with the US Army and the Missile Defense Agency, Lockheed

Martin Missiles and Fire Control conducted a total of eight successful PAC-3 flight tests in 2012. Six flight tests tested the PAC-3 Missile. Two of the flight tests were of the next generation PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missile. THAADIn February 2012, the THAAD Weapon System received Conditional Materiel Release from the US Army. THAAD is now in the hands of the warfighter and prepared to deploy, if needed. Additionally, the third US THAAD battery (D-2 ADA Battery) was activated by the US Army in the fourth quarter of 2012 at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Lockheed Martin is a world leader in systems integration and the development of air and missile defense systems and technologies, including the first operational hit-to-kill missile. It also has considerable experience in missile design and production, infrared seekers, command and control/battle management, and communications, precision pointing and tracking optics, as well as radar and signal processing.

Day 2 18 Feb

Simulator training for all facets of armed forces has gone from “nice to have” to a pivotal part of the entire infrastructure, according to CAE, which specialises in this sector.

CAE says simulation is vitally important is because it provides a particularly safe and efficient learning environment for training and preparing aircrews or soldiers to operate today’s advanced weapon systems, as well as providing co-ordinated training for joint and multi-national operations.

Cameron McKenzie, managing director – Middle East CAE military products and training services (pictured right), says there will be a wide-range of the company’s products and services on the company’s IDEX stand.

“We’re looking at simulation training, mission rehearsal training for land forces – tank training, driver training and so on. We’re also talking about helicopters such as mission training rehearsals. This comprises everything from your standard search-and-rescue operations up to special forces-style.

“If you look at technology 1O years ago technology was relatively in accessible. Barriers to entry were high. We have seen tremendous advances in the abilities of computers to process information. It may look the same on the outside but you have such a realism in synthetic environments. You’re virtually seeing a picture of reality, a different level of realism.

“At the higher end you’re preparing people for the mission they’re going on in a week, a month or a few months. They’re able to train as they would experience the mission.

He points out that military budgets around the world are shrinking, “but simulation saves money.

“So there is a cost-effective solution, and if you deliver solutions you are delivering capability.

Tampa, Florida-based director

marketing communications (military), Chris Stellwag, adds: “The benefit of CAE is that this is all we do, we don’t make tanks or planes. Simulation is the ideal learning tool. You can do it safely and efficiently before you have to do it for real.

“We’re a specialist in that niche. We’re a technology leader in simulation and training and we invest a lot in that niche, says Stellwag.

“We train over 100,000crew members, civil and militarily annually. We really

know what we’re doing when it comes to simulation and training.

McKenzie: “We’ve now established a group exclusively devoted to land systems training. We want to make sure customers think of us in this area.

CAE has a larger presence at IDEX 2013 than previously and the firm, which has been attending the expo since 2005, sees the trend continuing.

CAE has been pro-active in the GCC of late. CAE now has a regional office in Dubai handling military matters as the company steps up activities in the region, in particular with the GCC states.

McKenzie describes business in the Middle East as “robust, adding “the prospects for us are good.

UAE Air Force is now using two CAE-built A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) training devices for training aircrews. The CAE Simfinity A330 MRTT integrated procedures trainer (IPT) and A330 MRTT air refueling officer part-task trainer were built by CAE under subcontract from Airbus Military.

The CAE Simfinity IPT is used by pilots, co-pilots and maintainers to familiarise themselves with the A330 MRTT cockpit and run through procedural training tasks. Most importantly, the CAE Simfinity IPT runs a full-fidelity simulation software load – the same simulation software that can be used on a full-mission simulator.

CAE won a United States Navy contract to design and manufacture a KC-130J full-mission simulator for the Kuwait Air Force. Under terms of the contract, CAE USA will design and manufacture a KC-130J full-mission simulator that will be delivered in 2015 to Al Mubarak Air Base near Kuwait International Airport.

The simulator will feature the CAE True electric motion system, CAE Medallion-6000 image generator, and common database (CDB) architecture, which enables real-time mission training and rehearsal capabilities.

Turkish firm FNSS has assumed a high profile at IDEX, a reflection of its expansion and soaring success. We managed to secure an exclusive interview with CEO K Nail Kurt (pictured right) who told us that much of the message at this year’s IDEX centred on the wheeled vehicles.

“We have a very big concentration is on the wheel vehicles at this year’s show. A big focus is the 8X8 and the 6x6 version is here too. “The amphibious assault vehicle is impressive, but due to its size we couldn’t bring it here to IDEX, but we have a model. It’s not a model of the vehicle, it’s a model of the concept. And there is interest in it from the UAE side so we are working on that too.”

Ties will the UAE are particularly strong and that is set to continue unabated, says Kurt.

“The track vehicle has been with the UAE more than 12 years. We also provide logistics services for the UAE, a fleet management sort of thing.”

And Kurt says FNSS business is extremely healthy. “Business is fine in terms of FNSS as there is the diversity of the locations.” Prime examples are Malaysia and Saudi Arabia where FNSS is particularly active.

In Malaysia FNSS won a major 8X8

contract. DRG Group overall is the main contractor and FNSS is the main sub-contractor. “In terms of export, FNSS has been the biggest defence system exporter in Turkey. As far as

land systems are concerned FNSS is clearly number one. And we are number one in providing land vehicles to the Turkish Armed Forces. “There are other export programmes to Bahrain, Philippines, Belgium, Holland, Canada, US and Holland. And of course, this is why we are seen as a success story.” Kurt says FNSS has been working on some new product developments and there will continue to be emphasis on that. “Considerable attention is being placed on new product development. FNSS has been designated a research centre by the Turkish Government. That comes with significant incentives. In the case of FNSS it would be concentrating on small product development and research.”

The idea is also to have all bases covered from 10-35 tonnes in track, according to Kurt. “And in the wheeled area we’ll make derivations of the 8x8 and 6x6. We have also completed an unmanned weapon station named Claw with 25mm and 35mm versions.

“There will be some niche products for the Turkish Army. Plus we have the dozer. It’s from a 30-35 year-old design. It’s now more up-to-date. There’s more mine protection and it takes two crew. The biggest difference is the amphibious aspect.

There is interest in it from the UAE side so we are working on that too

Bosnia Herzegovina is conducting a review of its armed forces and may soon be doing some serious shopping.

A senior delegation from Bosnia Herzegovina has been walking the halls at IDEX and is impressed with what is on offer.

“We are impressed with the exhibition. We have several talks with some exhibiting companies we managed to see some military equipment we already have in our armed forces and a lot of equipment and armaments which we

don’t have,” says a spokesman for the delegation.

“We are in the process of renewing the armaments our armed forces. Based on this event (IDEX) we are ready for discussions about what to renew as part of our armed forces.”

Bosnia Herzegovina and UAE are have been discussing signing an agreement for military co-operation.

“That agreement will be reviewed at a governmental session in Bosnia Herzegovina shortly, according to the spokesman. “I’m expecting the two governments will do this.

“We are a country that exited a war and we have a huge amount of surplus weapons and armaments. Basically, we are pretty much focused on what to do about this ammunition and weapons that has well expired according to the dates.

“We are working on a defence review. There’s a new plan for modernisation for the forces. We will finally define the structure and number of our military forces.

“When we are speaking about the modernisation of our armed forces we are starting from the beginning,” the spokesman added.

Bristol Vehicles Manufacturing Division (Bristol VMD), a subsidiary of the Concorde-Corodex Group and M.H. Al Mana Group of Companies (CCG), is throwing the spotlight on the Gurkha Light Armored Patrol Vehicle (LAPV) and the Gurkha Rapid Patrol Vehicle (RPV) at IDEX.

These are two of the latest tactical vehicle models from its Canadian-based partner, Terradyne Armored Vehicles, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Magna International. The Gurkha LAPV successfully posted excellent performance ratings during its participation at last year’s UAE Land Forces Summer Field Trials.

Bristol VMD was recently appointed Terradyne’s official UAE agents and is responsible for marketing and supporting the product range within territory. Terradyne is known for its Gurkha range of armored military and law enforcement vehicles that employ the respected and robust Ford F550 chassis and power platform.

“Following the successful participation of our LAPV in the 2012 UAE Land Forces summer field trials,

we are delighted to formally introduce the Gurkha range of vehicles to the Middle East region in association with of our UAE partners, Bristol VMD,” says Andrew Preston, director of marketing, Terradyne.

“Gurkha represents automotive industry manufacturing standards and quality combined with established survivability; on-time delivery; dedicated maintenance support and value for money.”

Bristol VMD was established to help address the Middle East region’s growing demand for world-class, fully-efficient and reliable fire fighting and safety vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances. The new manufacturing

facility measures at 30,000 square metres and specifically caters to addressing the mobile fire fighting and ambulance needs of civil defence, aviation, police, and oil and gas segments.

The soft opening of the new division during the third quarter of 2012 has helped position Bristol VMD in a segment that specializes in the manufacture of fire fighting vehicles, ambulances and rapid intervention vehicles.

“IDEX has become the most strategically important tri-service exhibition and conference in the world. This exciting five-day event will serve as a strategic platform for us to increase awareness of our newly established Vehicle Manufacturing Division. In addition, we will be promoting Terradyne’s new Gurkha tactical vehicles, the Gurkha LAPV and the Gurkha RPV. Moreover, being a part of IDEX 2013 demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing exemplary products and services to a market and country in which we have been operating for the past 39 years,” added Mahmood Awad, managing director, CCG.

Pilatus Aircraft has announced the formal handover ceremony of the Botswana Defence Force PC-7 MkII Turbo Trainer Aircraft took place this month in Gaborone.

The President of the Republic of Botswana and Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama, members of the Defence Council, Botswana Defence Force general officers, retired Generals, senior government officials and defence attaches accredited to Botswana and a Pilatus delegation attended the event hosted by the Botswana Defence Force Commander Lt. Gen. Galebotswe.

This major milestone marks the successful completion of the delivery and entry into service of the five new BDF

Pilatus PC-7 MkII aircraft. In his handover address, the Pilatus

Chairman Oscar J. Schwenk noted that the relationship between the Botswana Defence Force and Pilatus dates back to 1989 when the supply contract for seven PC-7 trainer aircraft was signed.

A relationship that became gradually stronger once the first aircraft became operational 22 years ago. After two decades of successful operation with more than 28,000 hours flown and more than 70,000 landings recorded the ageing PC-7 aircraft reached the end of their operating life.

In 2011 the BDF opted to replace the PC-7 with the more advanced and modern PC-7 MkII trainer aircraft, a decision founded on the established relationship, the excellent track record of

the PC-7, and a proven product such as the PC-7 MkII of which more than 160 aircraft have been sold.

The PC-7 MkII has also been selected by other major Air Forces, the most recent order, apartment from Botswana, being India.

The major program highlight was the acceleration of the schedule on request of the BDF, with all five new aircraft being delivered in 2012, four months earlier than originally planned.

The old PC-7s have also been phased out and from 2013 onwards all cadets can be trained on the new modern PC-7 MkII aircraft.

As in the past, the new aircraft will be operated and maintained by Botswana Defence Force personnel, supported by Pilatus Switzerland.

Day 2 18 Feb

In the heart of the UAE desert, a massive industrial complex is beginning to take shape, underscoring the country’s relentless push to build an industrial base within a long-term strategy to diversify its economy.

Tawazun Holding, which was created in 2007 to push for industrial investment, is building the Tawazun Industrial Park (TIP) in Al Ajban, midway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The complex will have an area of around 10 square km and is expected to be completed before the end of 2030, when Abu Dhabi’s Vision 30 ends.

But that will not be the end. The present project is just the first phase of the complex which could be expanded at later stages.

“It will house scores of companies and will include many industries…the project is intended to support the industrial sector in the country by building an advanced manufacturing base in partnership with other companies,” said Salim Al Shamsi, a project engineer at the Abu Dhabi-based Tawazun.

He said TIP would serve regional and international defence as well as civilian manufacturing firms.

With an impressive infrastructure designed and implemented primarily for defence, TIP will effectively contribute towards the growing industrial backbone of the UAE while offering unprecedented opportunity for transfer of know-how and skills to local expertise and manufacturing base, according to

Tawazun, which has an enormous stand at IDEX.

It noted that the project is strategically located just near the highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai for principal air, sea and road transport links, adding that it is situated 30 km from Abu Dhabi airport, 52 km from Abu Dhabi port and 20 km from Khalifa port,55 km from Jebel Ali, 90 km from Dubai airport and102 km from Sharjah.

Britain has reiterated its strong commitment to the security of the Gulf countries on the basis of common interests, saying the region is set to gain great significance given its abundant oil resources and the increase in global energy demand.

Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Philip Dunne said the Gulf region is vital to global energy supply while regional states have emerged as key contributors to the global effort to fight terrorism.

Addressing the Gulf defence conference which opened on Saturday ahead of IDEX, he said Britain’s gas imports from the Gulf have increased dramatically over recent years, with around 20 per cent of its domestic consumption coming from the region.

“The strategic importance of the Gulf’s

energy producers is only likely to grow as global demand increases….the Gulf States are key partners for the UK in the fight against terrorism, especially countering the threats from within the Arabian Peninsula…..they are also important partners for the UK’s counter-proliferation efforts, including combating nuclear proliferation in Iran,” he said.

“These extensive connections between Britain and the Gulf mean that a threat to the security and prosperity of this region represents a threat to our interests. We have a common interest in the stability of this region. We are determined to meet these security interests by working in partnership to support your efforts, not working in isolation.”

He said that for Britain, defence engagement with its partners in the Gulf is a key priority, adding that this was highlighted in its International Defence

Engagement Strategy, launched earlier this month.

“The most obvious demonstration of this is in our physical presence, with 1,500 personnel deployed around the region working alongside our allies both within and beyond the Gulf…..but as you will know, we also have nearly 300 members of our Armed Forces permanently based here on non-operational tasks, including resident Defence Attachés in all Gulf states, support teams and loan Service Personnel.”

Dunne said the importance of security cooperation is one of the reasons why there have been more than 160 visits to the Gulf by British Ministers since May 2010, when the present Government came to power, including four visits by the Prime Minister.

GCC security is part of Britain’s security

Day 2 18 Feb

Land and air-land security issues remain a grave concern as demonstrated by global events, says Gen. (Retd) Patrick Colas des Francs, CEO of COGES (pictured right). Eurosatory, the world reference on the subject would seriously address them by developing the exhibition’s security section, which is linked to the defence domain, according to Gen. Colas des Francs.

“Therefore, two new technology clusters are being created: ‘Civil Security and Emergency Response’ and ‘Critical Infrastructure and Sensitives Facilities Protection’.

We are also continuing to strengthen the air-land component and stepping up efforts with respect to UAVs/UGVs,” he told the Nation Shield in an interview.

He stressed that Eurosatory had prominent and extensive participation from the Gulf.

“We receive many visitors from the Gulf States, both from the private sector and official delegations and 3.6 per cent growth has been recorded across the entire Middle East. Emirati companies have been exhibiting since 2006 via Nation Shield and we currently have 15 exhibiting firms in total.

“For the very first time in 2012, the UAE had a national pavilion with a dozen or so firms. This shows the high standard of technology and quality of Emirian companies. Today, they are in a position to launch into the international market. We also welcomed at the event as an exhibitor the United Arab Emirates Presidential Guard and we hope to further develop this partnership.”

He said Eurosatory continues to attract strong participation despite the global economic downturn as it is an exhibition of long-standing, worldwide renown.

Great efforts have always been made to provide exhibitors with a significant number of high value-added visitors -53,480 in 2012 from 130 countries.

“In addition, we have always sought to offer exhibitors maximum resources and advantages to develop their business. The exhibition’s quality is reflected in exhibitor loyalty, at 72 per cent. The exhibition includes and promotes the entire land and air-land defence industry.

“New pavilions are opening which illustrates growing interest in the exhibition from new countries like Pakistan, South Korea, Indonesia,

Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.“We hope to develop these pavilions

and accommodate new ones, so we are pursuing our expansion effort, particularly in Asia. The growing focus on security also brings new visitors either from government departments seeking to equip emergency forces, or from the private sector, scouting for solutions for people and assets security,” he says.

Eurosatory continues to be the dominant player in security expos, according to the general. “In France, there is an exhibition in each major field, and they have all gained international recognition: the Paris Air Show for aeronautics, Euronaval for the maritime sector, and Eurosatory for Land and Air-land. Naturally, we want to stay in the lead and so we review previous exhibitions to improve the next one.

“Through our presence at over 35 regional trade fairs and major international exhibitions, we study technological and tactical developments, and exhibiting conditions. These surveys allow us to contact certain sectors that are still under-represented or to target new areas of industry.”

Gen. Colas des Francs says emerging markets are constantly developing and the exhibition adapts. “Our event must indeed meet the needs of manufacturers, governments, institutions and private firms whatever are their requirements and ambitions in terms of equipment. That’s why Eurosatory endeavours to cover the full spectrum of defence and security equipment in all price groups.”

He agreed that land defence and security was increasingly technology-driven.

“Yes, technology is still a key aspect in this field and 450 new high-tech products were launched at Eurosatory in 2012. In addition to opening the new technology clusters I mentioned earlier, Eurosatory 2014 will confirm and strengthen the visibility of combat vehicles and systems.”

Day 2 18 Feb

One of BAE Systems’ flagship land programs, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, is making its first appearance in the UAE. The combat-proven fighting vehicle is on display at IDEX.

The Bradley Fighting Vehicle is an integral part of US Army infantry operations and a battle-proven and multi-role platform in the US Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT). It is known as one of the most survivable vehicles in the world and provides best-in-class capability for performance, protection, payload and mobility.

Bradley has been continuously improved with enhanced armor protection and the latest digitized electronics for optimum situational awareness, network connectivity and communication, and provides a firm foundation for integration of future capabilities.

“Bradleys have provided superior performance and protection to the

US Army for many years and we are excited for the opportunity to showcase those capabilities here in the UAE for the first time,” says Mark Signorelli, vice president and general manager of Vehicle Systems at BAE Systems.

“The Bradley Fighting Vehicle is a reliable, efficient and economical platform with low operational and maintenance costs that we can offer to our international customers.”

The Bradley is a versatile vehicle that provides high performance on a variety of missions from close-combat urban scenarios to open-combat, all-terrain situations.

The vehicle’s force protection and fire power provide best-in-class protection to soldiers while supporting many different military needs, including troop transportation, close assault and reconnaissance missions.

Raytheon’s Standard Missile-3 is a defensive weapon used by US and Japanese navies to destroy short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles. While the US views SM-3 as a regional missile defence capability, its high altitude and long range make it ideal for the defence of most nations.

With more than 20 successful intercepts, to include the widely publicized destruction of a failing satellite in 2008, the SM-3 is on the cutting edge of ballistic missile defense.

The SM-3 Block IA, with over 130 delivered, is deployed around the world today. In April of 2011, the US Navy used a SM-3 Block IA to demonstrate an advanced capability called ‘launch on remote.’ Using a cue from a forward-based, Raytheon-made TPY-2 radar, the SM-3 Block IA was launched from a U.S. Navy destroyer and successfully destroyed an intermediate range ballistic missile.

Many industry insiders called it a

‘graduation exercise’ for the SM-3 Block IA because it fully demonstrated the missile’s ability to take out increasingly complex threats.

Though the original customer requirement was for the SM-3 Block IA to take out short- and medium- range ballistic missiles, Wes Kremer, Raytheon’s vice president of Air and

Missile Defense Systems, knew it was within the SM-3 Block IA’s capability to take out an IRBM. According to Kremer, all of Raytheon’s SM-3s are built with ‘robustness’ and ‘flexibility’ to counter current and emerging threats around the world.

“If we can launch on remote, that means we can take a threat out sooner, and sooner is better,” says Kremer.

In conjunction with the US Navy and Missile Defense Agency, Raytheon is actively testing an upgrade version, the SM-3 Block IB. This upgrade includes improvements to the kinetic warhead and diverts system to expand the threat set. It will be the first SM-3 variant to be both land and sea-based. An Aegis Ashore system is being built in Hawaii for flight testing of the SM-3.

The first operational AEGIS Ashore system is on track for a 2015 deployment in Romania, followed by an additional site in 2018 in Poland. Both sites are designed to further extend defensive coverage of Europe.
